We study the value distribution and extreme values of eigenfunctions for the ``quantized cat map''. This is the quantization of a hyperbolic linear map of the torus. In a previous paper it was observed that there are quantum symmetries of the quantum map - a commutative group of unitary operators which commute with the map, which we called ``Hecke operators''. The eigenspaces of the quantum map thus admit an orthonormal basis consisting of eigenfunctions of all the Hecke operators, which we call ``Hecke eigenfunctions''.
In this note we investigate suprema and value distribution of the Hecke eigenfunctions. For prime values of the inverse Planck constant N for which the map is diagonalizable modulo N (the ``split primes'' for the map), we show that the Hecke eigenfunctions are uniformly bounded and their absolute values (amplitudes) are either constant or have a semi-circle value distribution as N tends to infinity. Moreover in the latter case different eigenfunctions become statistically independent. We obtain these results via the Riemann hypothesis for curves over a finite field (Weil's theorem) and recent results of N. Katz on exponential sums. For general N we obtain a nontrivial bound on the supremum norm of these Hecke eigenfunctions.
This paper concerns the behavior of eigenfunctions of quantized cat maps and in particular their supremum norm. We observe that for composite integer values of N, the inverse of Planck's constant, some of the desymmetrized eigenfunctions have very small support and hence very large supremum norm. We also prove an entropy estimate and show that our functions satisfy equality in this estimate. In the case when N is a prime power with even exponent we calculate the supremum norm for a large proportion of all desymmetrized eigenfunctions and we find that for a given N there is essentially at most …
We study extreme values of desymmetrized eigenfunctions (so called Hecke eigenfunctions) for the quantized cat map, a quantization of a hyperbolic linear map of the torus. In a previous paper it was shown that for prime values of the inverse Planck constant N=1/h, such that the map is diagonalizable (but not upper triangular) modulo N, the Hecke eigenfunctions are uniformly bounded. The purpose of this paper is to show that the same holds for any prime N provided that the map is not upper triangular modulo N. We also find that the supremum norms of Hecke eigenfunctions are << N^epsilon for all…
We look at the expectation values for quantized linear symplectic maps on the multidimensional torus and their distribution in the semiclassical limit. We construct super-scars that are stable under the arithmetic symmetries of the system and localize around invariant manifolds. We show that these super-scars exist only when there are isotropic rational subspaces, invariant under the linear map. In the case where there are no such scars, we compute the variance of the fluctuations of the matrix elements for the desymmetrized system, and present a conjecture for their limiting distributions.
We prove a strong version of quantum ergodicity for linear hyperbolic maps of the torus (``cat maps''). We show that there is a density one sequence of integers so that as N tends to infinity along this sequence, all eigenfunctions of the quantum propagator at inverse Planck constant N are uniformly distributed. A key step in the argument is to show that for a hyperbolic matrix in the modular group, there is a density one sequence of integers N for which its order (or period) modulo N is somewhat larger than the square root of N.
For general quantum systems the semiclassical behaviour of eigenfunctions in relation to the ergodic properties of the underlying classical system is quite difficult to understand. The Wignerfunctions of eigenstates converge weakly to invariant measures of the classical system, the so called quantum limits, and one would like to understand which invariant measures can occur that way, thereby classifying the semiclassical behaviour of eigenfunctions. We introduce a class of maps on the torus for whose quantisations we can understand the set of quantum limits in great detail. In particular we ca…
In this paper we construct a sequence of eigenfunctions of the ``quantum Arnold's cat map'' that, in the semiclassical limit, show a strong scarring phenomenon on the periodic orbits of the dynamics. More precisely, those states have a semiclassical limit measure that is the sum of 1/2 the normalized Lebesgue measure on the torus plus 1/2 the normalized Dirac measure concentrated on any a priori given periodic orbit of the dynamics. It is known (the Schnirelman theorem) that ``most'' sequences of eigenfunctions equidistribute on the torus. The sequences we construct therefore provide an exampl…
We study the semiclassical behaviour of eigenfunctions of quantum systems with ergodic classical limit. By the quantum ergodicity theorem almost all of these eigenfunctions become equidistributed in a weak sense. We give a simple derivation of an upper bound of order $\abs{\ln\hbar}^{-1}$ on the rate of quantum ergodicity if the classical system is ergodic with a certain rate. In addition we obtain a similar bound on transition amplitudes if the classical system is weak mixing. Both results generalise previous ones by Zelditch. We then extend the results to some classes of quantised maps on th…
The explicit formulas for the maps interconnecting the sets of solutions of the special double confluent Heun equation and the equation of the RSJ model of overdamped Josephson junction in case of shifted sinusoidal bias are given. The approach these are based upon leans on the extensive application of eigenfunctions of certain linear operator acting on functions holomorphic on the universal cover of the punctured complex plane. The functional equation the eigenfunctions noted obey is derived, the matrix form of the monodromy transformation they infer is given.
Quantized contact transformations are Toeplitz operators over a contact manifold $(X,α)$ of the form $U_χ = ΠA χΠ$, where $Π: H^2(X) \to L^2(X)$ is a Szego projector, where $χ$ is a contact transformation and where $A$ is a pseudodifferential operator over $X$. They provide a flexible alternative to the Kahler quantization of symplectic maps, and encompass many of the examples in the physics literature, e.g. quantized cat maps and kicked rotors. The index problem is to determine $ind(U_χ)$ when the principal symbol is unitary, or equivalently to determine whether $A$ can be chosen so that $U_χ…

We revisit the radial oscillator from the free oscillator realization point of view. By using a free oscillator, namely the creation/annihilation operators of the harmonic oscillator, we construct an operator that maps the eigenfunctions of the harmonic oscillator to those of the radial oscillator. As a polynomial part of this relation, we obtain an operator that maps the Hermite polynomials to the Laguerre polynomials.
In this text we consider discrete Laplace operators defined on lattices based on finitely-ramified self-similar sets, and their continuous analogous defined on the self-similar sets themselves. We are interested in the spectral properties of these operators. The basic example is the lattice based on the Sierpinski gasket. We introduce a new renormalization map which appears to be a rational map defined on a smooth projective variety (more precisely, this variety is isomorphic to a product of three types of Grassmannians: complex Grassmannians, Lagrangian Grassmannians, orthogonal Grassmannians…
