We study the semiclassical behaviour of eigenfunctions of quantum systems with ergodic classical limit. By the quantum ergodicity theorem almost all of these eigenfunctions become equidistributed in a weak sense. We give a simple derivation of an upper bound of order $\abs{\ln\hbar}^{-1}$ on the rate of quantum ergodicity if the classical system is ergodic with a certain rate. In addition we obtain a similar bound on transition amplitudes if the classical system is weak mixing. Both results generalise previous ones by Zelditch. We then extend the results to some classes of quantised maps on the torus and obtain a logarithmic rate for perturbed cat-maps and a sharp algebraic rate for parabolic maps.
When a map is classically uniquely ergodic, it is expected that its quantization will posses quantum unique ergodicity. In this paper we give examples of Quantum Unique Ergodicity for the perturbed Kronecker map, and an upper bound for the rate of convergence.
We prove a Egorov theorem, or quantum-classical correspondence, for the quantised baker's map, valid up to the Ehrenfest time. This yields a logarithmic upper bound for the decay of the quantum variance, and, as a corollary, a quantum ergodic theorem for this map.
For manifolds with geodesic flow that is ergodic on the unit tangent bundle, the quantum ergodicity theorem implies that almost all Laplacian eigenfunctions become equidistributed as the eigenvalue goes to infinity. For a locally symmetric space with a universal cover that is a product of several upper half planes, the geodesic flow has constants of motion so it can not be ergodic. It is, however, ergodic when restricted to the submanifolds defined by these constants. In accordance, we show that almost all eigenfunctions become equidistributed on these submanifolds.
In this paper we give a new proof of the Quantum Unique Ergodicity conjecture for holomorphic integral weight modular forms on the upper half plane. The proof requires only partial results towards the Ramanujan conjecture and the shifted convolution problem. Furthermore the proof is applicable to a wider class of cusp forms other than Hecke eigenforms. We also prove some interesting corollaries, particularly towards the Lehmer's conjecture on the non vanishing of the Fourier coefficients.
A formula for the transition density of a Markov process defined by an infinite-dimensional stochastic equation is given in terms of the Ornstein--Uhlenbeck bridge and a useful lower estimate on the density is provided. As a consequence, uniform exponential ergodicity and $V$-ergodicity are proved for a large class of equations. We also provide computable bounds on the convergence rates and the spectral gap for the Markov semigroups defined by the equations. The bounds turn out to be uniform with respect to a large family of nonlinear drift coefficients. Examples of finite-dimensional stochast…
We give an estimate of the quantum variance for $d$-regular graphs quantised with boundary scattering matrices that prohibit back-scattering. For families of graphs that are expanders, with few short cycles, our estimate leads to quantum ergodicity for these families of graphs. Our proof is based on a uniform control of an associated random walk on the bonds of the graph. We show that recent constructions of Ramanujan graphs, and asymptotically almost surely, random $d$-regular graphs, satisfy the necessary conditions to conclude that quantum ergodicity holds.
We prove a generalized version of the Quantum Ergodicity Theorem on smooth compact Riemannian manifolds without boundary. We apply it to prove some asymptotic properties on the distribution of typical eigenfunctions of the Laplacian in geometric situations where the Liouville measure is not (or not known to be) ergodic.
For small range of $p>2$, we improve the $L^p$ bounds of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on negatively curved manifolds. Our improvement is by a power of logarithm for a full density sequence of eigenfunctions. We also derive improvements on the size of the nodal sets. Our proof is based on a quantum ergodicity property of independent interest, which holds for families of symbols supported in balls whose radius shrinks at a logarithmic rate.
We study the ergodic properties of quantized ergodic maps of the torus. It is known that these satisfy quantum ergodicity: For almost all eigenstates, the expectation values of quantum observables converge to the classical phase-space average with respect to Liouville measure of the corresponding classical observable. The possible existence of any exceptional subsequences of eigenstates is an important issue, which until now was unresolved in any example. The absence of exceptional subsequences is referred to as quantum unique ergodicity (QUE). We present the first examples of maps which satis…
We present a theory of hypoellipticity and unique ergodicity for semilinear parabolic stochastic PDEs with "polynomial" nonlinearities and additive noise, considered as abstract evolution equations in some Hilbert space. It is shown that if Hormander's bracket condition holds at every point of this Hilbert space, then a lower bound on the Malliavin covariance operator $M_t$ can be obtained. Informally, this bound can be read as "Fix any finite-dimensional projection $Π$ on a subspace of sufficiently regular functions. Then the eigenfunctions of $M_t$ with small eigenvalues have only a very sma…
Consider the non-compact billiard in the first quandrant bounded by the positive $x$-semiaxis, the positive $y$-semiaxis and the graph of $f(x) = (x+1)^{-α}$, $α\in (1,2]$. Although the Schnirelman Theorem holds, the quantum average of the position $x$ is finite on any eigenstate, while classical ergodicity entails that the classical time average of $x$ is unbounded.
This short note proves that a Laplacian cannot be quantum uniquely ergodic if it possesses a quasimode of order zero which (i) has a singular limit, and (ii) is a linear combination of a uniformly bounded number of eigenfunctions (modulo an o(1) error). Bouncing ball quasimodes of the stadium are believed to have this property (E.J. Heller et al) and so are analogous quasimodes recently constructed by H. Donnelly on certain non-positively curved surfaces. The main ingredient is the proof that all sequences of off-diagonal matrix elements of QUE systems with vanishing spectral gaps tend to zero…
We analyze the distribution of eigenvectors for mesoscopic, mean-field perturbations of diagonal matrices in the bulk of the spectrum. Our results apply to a generalized $N\times N$ Rosenzweig-Porter model. We prove that the eigenvectors entries are asymptotically Gaussian with a specific variance, localizing them onto a small, explicit part of the spectrum. For a well spread initial spectrum, this variance profile universally follows a heavy-tailed Cauchy distribution. In the case of smooth entries, we also obtain a strong form of quantum unique ergodicity as an overwhelming probability bound…
We establish an abstract local ergodic theorem, under suitable space-time scaling, for the (boundary-driven) symmetric exclusion process on an increasing sequence of balls covering an infinite weighted graph. The proofs are based on 1-block and 2-blocks estimates utilizing the resistance structure of the graph; the moving particle lemma established recently by the author; and discrete harmonic analysis. Our ergodic theorem applies to any infinite weighted graph upon which random walk is strongly recurrent in the sense of Barlow, Delmotte, and Telcs; these include many trees, fractal graphs, an…
