The LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface hosts a plethora of gate-tunable electronic phases. Gating of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces are usually assumed to occur electrostatically. However, increasing evidence suggests that non-local interactions can influence and, in some cases, dominate the coupling between applied gate voltages and electronic properties. Here, we sketch quasi-1D ballistic electron waveguides at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface as a probe to understand how gate tunability varies as a function of spatial separation. Gate tunability measurements reveal the scaling law to be at odds with the pure electrostatic coupling observed in traditional semiconductor systems. The non-Coulombic gating at the interface is attributed to the existence of a long-range nanoelectromechanical coupling between the gate and electron waveguide, mediated by the ferroelastic domains in SrTiO$_3$. The long-range interactions at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface add unexpected richness and complexity to this correlated electron system.
A two-dimensional electron liquid is formed at the n-type interface between SrTiO3 and LaAlO3. Here we report on Kelvin probe microscopy measurements of the electronic compressibility of this electron system. The electronic compressibility is found to be negative for carrier densities of \approx10^13/cm^2. At even smaller densities, a metal-to-insulator transition occurs. These local measurements corroborate earlier measurements of the electronic compressibility of LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces obtained by measuring the capacitance of macroscopic metal-LaAlO3-SrTiO3 capacitors.
In condensed matter physics the quasi two-dimensional electron gas at the interface of two different insulators, polar LaAlO3 on non-polar SrTiO3 (LaAlO3/SrTiO3) is a spectacular and surprising observation. This phenomenon is LaAlO3 film thickness-dependent and may be explained by the polarization catastrophe model, in which a charge transfer of 0.5 electron from the LaAlO3 film into the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface is expected. Here we show that in conducting samples (more than 4 unit cells of LaAlO3) there is indeed a 0.5 electron transfer from LaAlO3 into the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface by studying …
The two dimensional electron gas formed between the two band insulators SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 exhibits a variety of interesting physical properties which make it an appealing material for use in future spintronics and/or quantum computing devices. For this kind of applications electrons have to retain their phase memory for sufficiently long times or length. Using a mesoscopic size device we were able to extract the phase coherence length, and its temperature variation. We find the dephasing rate to have a power law dependence on temperature. The power depends on the temperature range studied and …
This book chapter reviews the experimental evidence for magnetic phenomena at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. We argue that essentially all of the signatures of magnetism can be sorted into two distinct categories: (1) magnetic phases (e.g., ferromagnetic or Kondo) involving local magnetic moments and their coupling to itinerant electrons; (2) metamagnetic effects that are mediated by attractive electron-electron interactions that do not involve local moments. We review possible candidates for the local moments that give rise to the ferromagnetic phases and focus on arguments for one potential so…
We study properties of electrons on illuminated surfaces of SrTiO3 with titanium dxz_dyz and dxy bands for their spectrum. Recently A. F. Santander-Syro et al [Nature Materials, 13, 1085 (2014)] found that the dxy bands actually comprise two chiral branches with the Kramers degeneracy at the zone center lifted in absence of a magnetic moment. From symmetry analysis of instabilities possible in the Fermi liquid with exchange interactions we identified the metallic in-layer state with the concrete antiferromagnetic phase and discuss if the same state materializes at conducting LaAlO3_SrTiO3 inte…
Using LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ bilayers, we have fabricated field-effect devices that utilize the two-dimensional electron liquid generated at the bilayers' {\textit n}-type interfaces as drain-source channels and the LaAlO$_3$ layers as gate dielectrics. With gate voltages well below 1\,V, the devices are characterized by voltage gain and current gain. The devices were operated at temperatures up to 100\,°C.
The possible existence of short-channel effects in oxide field-effect transistors is investigated by exploring field-effect transistors with various gate lengths fabricated from LaAlO$_3$-SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. The studies reveal the existence of channel-length modulation and drain-induced barrier lowering for gate lengths below 1 μm, with a characteristic behavior comparable to semiconducting devices. With the fabrication of field-effect transistors with gate lengths as small as 60 nm the results demonstrate the possibility to fabricate by electron-beam lithography functional devices bas…
The emerging field of complex oxide interfaces is generically built on one of the most celebrated substrates - strontium titanate (SrTiO3). This material hosts a range of phenomena, including ferroelasticity, incipient ferroelectricity, and most puzzlingly, contested giant piezoelectricity. Although these properties may markedly influence the oxide interfaces, especially on microscopic length scales, the lack of local probes capable of studying such buried systems has left their effects largely unexplored. Here we use a scanning charge detector - a nanotube single-electron transistor - to noni…
The mechanism responsible for the extraordinary interface conductivity of LaAlO$_{3}$ on SrTiO$_{3}$ and its insulator-metal transition remains controversial. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we establish a comprehensive and coherent picture that the interplay of electronic reconstructions, lattice distortions, and surface oxygen vacancies fully compensates the polarization potential divergence in LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$, explaining naturally the experimental observations under different conditions. While lattice distortions and a charge redistribution between LaO and AlO$_2…
We have measured the electronic structure of the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) found at the Al/SrTiO3 (Al/STO) and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) interfaces by means of laser angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, taking advantage of the large photoelectron escape depth at low photon energy to probe these buried interfaces. We demonstrate the possibility of tuning the electronic density in Al/STO by varying the Al layer thickness and show that the electronic structure evolution is well described by self-consistent tight binding supercell calculations, but differs qualitatively from a rig…
Emergent phenomena, including superconductivity and magnetism, found in the two-dimensional electron liquid (2-DEL) at the interface between the insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 distinguish this rich system from conventional two-dimensional electron gases at compound semiconductor interfaces. The origin of this 2-DEL, however, is highly debated with focus on the role of defects in the SrTiO3 while the LaAlO3 has been assumed perfect. Our experiments and first principles calculations show that the cation stoichiometry of the nominal LaAlO3 layer is key to 2-DEL formation: only Al-rich LaAlO3 result…
The electronic structure of interfaces between LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ is studied using local spin density approximation (LSDA) with intra-atomic Coulomb repulsion (LSDA+U). We find that the nature of the interface metallic states is strongly affected by the type of the structure (sandwich or bilayer) and by the termination surface of LaAlO$_3$. In all structures the atomic relaxation plays a crucial role in the electronic properties of the system. While in sandwiches the structural relaxation produces a significant polarization in SrTiO$_3$ and Jahn-Teller like splitting of Ti $3d_{xy}$ orbit…
The relative significance of quantum conductivity correction and magnetic nature of electrons in understanding the intriguing low-temperature resistivity minimum and negative magnetoresistance of the two-dimensional electron gas at LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces has been a long outstanding issue since its discovery. Here we report a comparative magnetotransport study on amorphous and oxygen-annealed crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures at a relatively high-temperature range, where the orbital scattering is largely suppressed by thermal fluctuations. Despite of a predominantly negative out-of-p…
The time-resolved photoconductance of amorphous and crystalline LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces, both hosting an interfacial 2-dimensional electron gas, is investigated under irradiation by variable-wavelengths, visible or ultraviolet photons. Unlike bare SrTiO$_3$ single crystals, showing relatively small photoconductance effects, both kinds of interfaces exhibit an intense and highly persistent photoconductance with extraordinarily long characteristic times. The temporal behaviour of the extra photoinduced conductance persisting after light irradiation shows a complex dependence on interface …
LaAlO$_{3}$ and NdGaO$_{3}$ thin films of different thickness have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on TiO$_2$-terminated SrTiO$_{3}$ single crystals and investigated by soft X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. The surface sensitivity of the measurements has been tuned by varying photon energy $hν$ and emission angle $Θ$. In contrast to the core levels of the other elements, the Sr $3d$ line shows an unexpected splitting for higher surface sensitivity, signaling the presence of a second strontium component. From our quantitative analysis we conclude that during the growth process Sr atoms d…
Recently, it was established that a two-dimensional electron system can arise at the interface between two oxide insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. This paradigmatic example exhibits metallic behaviour and magnetic properties between non-magnetic and insulating oxides. Despite a huge amount of theoretical and experimental work a thorough understanding has yet to be achieved. We analyzed the structural deformations of a LaAlO3 (001) slab induced by hydrogen ad-atoms and oxygen vacancies at its surface by means of density functional theory. Moreover, we investigated the influence of surface reconstru…
The LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ system exhibits unusual magnetic and superconducting behavior arising from electron-electron interactions whose physical origin is not well understood. Quantum transport techniques, especially those involving mesoscopic geometries, can offer insight into these interactions. Here we report evidence for long-range electron-electron interactions in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ nanowires, measured through the phenomenon of frictional drag, in which current passing through one nanowire induces a voltage across a nearby electrically isolated nanowire. Frictional drag mediated by the C…
The thermoelectric power of the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface is explored below room temperature, in comparison with that of Nb-doped SrTiO3 single crystals. For the interface we find a region below T =50 K where thermopower is dominated by phonon-drag, whose amplitude is hugely amplified with respect to the corresponding bulk value, reaching values ~mV/K and above. The phonon-drag enhancement at the interface is traced back to the tight carrier confinement of the 2DES, and represents a sharp signature of strong electron-acoustic phonon coupling at the i…
We investigate the 2-dimensional Fermi surface of high-mobility LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces using Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. Our analysis of the oscillation pattern underscores the key role played by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction brought about by the breaking of inversion symmetry, as well as the dominant contribution of the heavy $d_{xz}$/$d_{yz}$ orbitals on electrical transport. We furthermore bring into light the complex evolution of the oscillations with the carrier density, which is tuned by the field effect.
We find that the sheet resistance ($R_s$) of patterned samples of ${\rm LaAlO_3}/{\rm SrTiO_3}$ with a length scale of several microns may increase significantly at low temperatures in connection with driving electrical currents and applying in-plane magnetic fields. As the samples are warmed up, $R_s$ recovers to its original value with accelerated recovery near ${\rm 70 \ K}$ and ${\rm 160 \ K}$. Concomitantly with the increase in $R_s$, the carrier density and the mobility decrease and magnetotransport properties which may be linked to magnetism are suppressed.
A superconducting phase with an extremely low carrier density of the order of 10^13 cm^-2 is present at LaAlO3-SrTiO3 interfaces. If depleted from charge carriers by means of a gate field, this superconducting phase undergoes a transition into a metallic/insulating state that is still characterized by a gap in the spectral density of states. Measuring and analyzing the critical field of this gap, we provide evidence that macroscopically phase-coherent Cooper pairs are present in the metallic/insulating state. This is characterized by fluctuating vortex-antivortex pairs, and not by individual, …
We have performed high field magnetotransport measurements to investigate the interface electron gas in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations reveal several 2D conduction subbands with carrier effective masses between 1 and 3 m_e, quantum mobilities of order 3000 cm^2/V s, and band edges only a few millielectronvolts below the Fermi energy. Measurements in tilted magnetic fields confirm the 2D character of the electron gas, and show evidence of inter-subband scattering.
The voltage-spectral density SV(f) of the 2-dimensional electron gas formed at the interface of LaAlO3 /SrTiO3 has been thoroughly investigated. The low-frequency component has a clear 1/f behavior with a quadratic bias current dependence, attributed to resistance fluctuations. However, its temperature dependence is inconsistent with the classical Hooge model, based on carrier-mobility fluctuations. The experimental results are, instead, explained in terms of carrier-number fluctuations, due to an excitation-trapping mechanism of the 2-dimensional electron gas.
Localization of electrons in the two-dimensional electron gas at the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface is investigated by varying the channel thickness in order to establish the nature of the conducting channel. Layers of SrTiO$_3$ were grown on NdGaO$_3$ (110) substrates and capped with LaAlO$_3$. When the SrTiO$_3$ thickness is $\leq 6$ unit cells, most electrons at the interface are localized, but when the number of SrTiO$_3$ layers is 8-16, the free carrier density approaches $3.3 \times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$, the value corresponding to charge transfer of 0.5 electron per unit cell at the interfa…
We measured the magnetoresistance of the 2D electron liquid formed at the (111) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. The hexagonal symmetry of the interface is manifested in a six-fold crystalline component appearing in the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and planar Hall data, which agree well with symmetry analysis we performed. The six-fold component increases with carrier concentration, reaching 15% of the total AMR signal. Our results suggest the coupling between higher itinerant electronic bands and the crystal as the origin of this effect and demonstrate that the (111) oxide interface is a…
We report a detailed analysis of magneto-transport properties of top- and back-gated LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. Efficient modulation in magneto-resistance, carrier density, and mobility of the two-dimensional electron liquid present at the interface is achieved by sweeping top and back gate voltages. Analyzing those changes with respect to the carrier density tuning, we observe that the back gate strongly modifies the electron mobility while the top gate mainly varies the carrier density. The evolution of the spin-orbit interaction is also followed as a function of top and back gati…
We report strong localization of 2D electron gas in LaAlO3 / SrTiO3 epitaxial thin-film heterostructures grown on (LaAlO3)0.3-(Sr2AlTaO3)0.7 substrates by using pulsed laser deposition with in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Using longitudinal and transverse magnetotransport measurements, we have determined that disorder at the interface influences the conduction behavior, and that increasing the carrier concentration by growing at lower oxygen partial pressure changes the conduction from strongly localized at low carrier concentration to metallic at higher carrier concentrat…
We report that in unannealed LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterostructures the critical thickness for the appearance of the two-dimensional electron gas can be less than 4 unit cell (uc), the interface is conducting even for STO substrates with mixed terminations and the low-temperature resistance upturn in LAO/STO heterostructures with thick LAO layers strongly depends on laser fluence. Our experimental results provide fundamental insights into the different roles played by oxygen vacancies and polarization catastrophe in the two-dimensional electron gas in crystalline LAO/STO heterostructures.
We investigate the effect of oxygen vacancies and hydrogen dopants at the surface and inside slabs of LaAlO3, SrTiO3, and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures on the electronic properties by means of electronic structure calculations as based on density functional theory. Depending on the concentration, the presence of these defects in LaAlO3 slab can suppress the surface conductivity. In contrast, in insulating SrTiO3 slabs already very small concentrations of oxygen vacancies or hydrogen dopant atoms induce a finite occupation of the conduction band. Surface defects in insulating LaAlO3/SrTiO3 het…
High-mobility complex-oxide heterostructures and nanostructures offer new opportunities for extending the paradigm of quantum transport beyond the realm of traditional III-V or carbon-based materials. Recent quantum transport investigations with LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$-based quantum dots have revealed the existence of a strongly correlated phase in which electrons form spin-singlet pairs without becoming superconducting. Here we report evidence for micrometer-scale ballistic transport of electron pairs in quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ nanowire cavities. In the paired phase, …
We shed light on the interplay between structure and many-body effects relevant for itinerant ferromagnetism in LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures. The realistic correlated electronic structure is studied by means of the (spin-polarized) charge self-consistent combination of density functional theory (DFT) with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) beyond the realm of static correlation effects. Though many-body behavior is also active in the defect-free interface, a ferromagnetic instability occurs only with oxygen vacancies. A minimal Ti two-orbital $e_g$-$t_{2g}$ description for the correlat…
We measure the gate voltage ($V_g$) dependence of the superconducting properties and the spin-orbit interaction in the (111)-oriented LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. Superconductivity is observed in a dome-shaped region in the carrier density-temperature phase diagram with the maxima of superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the upper critical fields lying at the same $V_g$. The spin-orbit interaction determined from the superconducting parameters and confirmed by weak-antilocalization measurements follows the same gate voltage dependence as $T_c$. The correlation between the supercon…
The observation of a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) (1, 2), superconductivity (3, 4), magnetic effects (5) and electronic phase separation (6-8) at the interfaces of insulating oxides, especially LaAlO3/SrTiO3, has further enhanced the potential of complex oxides for novel electronics. The occurrence of the 2DEG is strongly believed to be driven by the polarization discontinuity (9) at the interface between the two oxides. In this scenario, the crystal orientation plays an important role and no conductivity would be expected for e.g., the interface between LaAlO3 and (110)-oriented SrTiO3…
Using a low-temperature conductive-tip atomic force microscope in cross-section geometry we have characterized the local transport properties of the metallic electron gas that forms at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. At low temperature, we find that the carriers do not spread away from the interface but are confined within ~10 nm, just like at room temperature. Simulations taking into account both the large temperature and electric-field dependence of the permittivity of SrTiO3 predict a confinement over a few nm for sheet carrier densities larger than ~6 10^13 cm-2. We discuss the ex…
We investigate the electronic properties of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface using density functional theory. In contrast to previous studies, which relied on (semi-)local functionals and the GGA+U method, we here use a recently developed hybrid functional to determine the electronic structure. This approach offers the distinct advantage of accessing both the metallic and insulating multilayers on a parameter-free equal footing. As compared to calculations based on semilocal GGA functionals, our hybrid functional calculations lead to a considerably increased band gap for the insulating systems. The…
In this paper we study LaAlO$_3$/Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ structures with nominally x = 0, 0.1 and different thicknesses of the Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ layer. We observe that both systems have many properties similar to previously studied LaAlO$_3$/EuTiO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ and other oxide interfaces, such as the formation of a 2D electron liquid for 1 or 2 unit cells of Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$; a metal-insulator transition driven by the thickness increase of Eu$_{1-x}$La$_x$TiO$_3$ layer; the presence of an Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) when driving the systems above the Lifshitz point with …
The relative importance of atomic defects and electron transfer in explaining conductivity at the crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface has been a topic of debate. Metallic interfaces with similar electronic properties produced by amorphous oxide overlayers on SrTiO3 have called in question the original polarization catastrophe model. We resolve the issue by a comprehensive comparison of (100)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates with crystalline and amorphous overlayers of LaAlO3 of different thicknesses prepared under different oxygen pressures. For both types of overlayers, there is a critical thicknes…
Understanding the role of defects in oxide heterostructures is crucial for future materials control and functionalization. We hence study the impact of oxygen vacancies (OVs) at variable concentrations on orbital- and spin exchange in the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface by first principles many-body theory and real-space model-Hamiltonian techniques. Intricate interplay between Hubbard $U$ and Hund's coupling $J_{\rm H}$ for OV-induced correlated states is demonstrated. Orbital polarization towards an effective $e_g$ state with predominant local antiferromagnetic alignment on Ti sites near OVs i…
With infrared ellipsometry and transport measurements we investigated the electrons at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. We obtained a sheet carrier density of Ns~5-9x 10E13 cm^-2, an effective mass of m*~3m_e, and a strongly frequency dependent mobility. The latter are similar as in bulk SrTi1-xNbxO3 and therefore suggestive of polaronic correlations of the confined carriers. We also determined the vertical density profile which has a strongly asymmetric shape with a rapid initial decay over the first 2 nm and a pronounced tail that extends to about 11 nm.
The conducting interface of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures has been studied by hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. From the Ti~2$p$ signal and its angle-dependence we derive that the thickness of the electron gas is much smaller than the probing depth of 4 nm and that the carrier densities vary with increasing number of LaAlO$_3$ overlayers. Our results point to an electronic reconstruction in the LaAlO$_3$ overlayer as the driving mechanism for the conducting interface and corroborate the recent interpretation of the superconducting ground state as being of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz…
With infrared ellipsometry, x-ray diffraction, and electric transport measurements we investigated the electric-field-effect on the confined electrons at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. We obtained evidence that the localization of the electrons at low temperature and negative gate voltage is induced, or at least strongly enhanced, by a pyroelectric phase transition in SrTiO3 which strongly reduces the lattice polarizability and the subsequent Coulomb screening. In particular, we show that the charge localisation and the polar order of SrTiO3 both develop below about 50 K and exhibit similar, uni…
Density functional theory calculations with an on-site Coulomb repulsion term (GGA+U method) reveal competing ground states in (111) oriented (LaAlO$_3$)$_M$/(SrTiO$_3$)$_N$ superlattices with n-type interfaces, ranging from spin, orbital polarized, Dirac point Fermi surface to charge ordered flat band phases. These are steered by the interplay of (i) Hubbard U, (ii) SrTiO$_3$ quantum well thickness and (iii) crystal field spitting tied to in-plane strain. In the honeycomb lattice bilayer case N=2 under tensile strain inversion symmetry breaking drives the system from a ferromagnetic Dirac poi…
We report on the discovery and transport study of the superconducting ground state present at the (111)LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface. The superconducting transition is consistent with a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition and its 2D nature is further corroborated by the anisotropy of the critical magnetic field, as calculated by Tinkham. The estimated superconducting layer thickness and coherence length are 10 nm and 60 nm, respectively. The results of this work provide a new platform to clarify the microscopic details of superconductivity at LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces, in particula…
The discovery of a two-dimensional (2D) electron gas at the (110)-oriented LaAlO3/SrTiO3 in- terface provided us with the opportunity to probe the effect of crystallographic orientation and the ensuing electronic reconstructions on interface properties beyond the conventional (001)-orientation. At temperatures below 200 mK, we have measured 2D superconductivity with a spatial extension significantly larger (d approx. 24 - 30 nm) than previously reported for (001)-oriented LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces (d approx. 10 nm). The more extended superconductivity brings about the absence of violation of th…
The superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of the SrTiO3/LaAlO3 interface was varied by the electric field effect. The anisotropy of the upper critical field and the normal state magneto-transport were studied as a function of gate voltage. The spin-orbit coupling energy is extracted. This tunable energy scale is used to explain the strong gate dependence of the mobility and of the anomalous Hall signal observed. The spin-orbit coupling energy follows Tc for the electric field range under study.
We report the effect of $δ$-doping at LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ interface with LaMnO$_{3}$ monolayers on the photoconducting (PC) state. The PC is realized by exposing the samples to broad band optical radiation of a quartz lamp and 325 and 441 nm lines of a He-Cd laser. Along with the significant modification in electrical transport which drives the pure LaAlO$_{3}$/SrTiO$_{3}$ interface from metal-to-insulator with increasing LaMnO$_{3}$ sub-monolayer thickness, we also observe an enhancement in the photo-response and relaxation time constant. Possible scenario for the PC based on defect-clust…
Caviglia et al. [Nature (London) 456, 624 (2008)] have found that the superconducting LaAlO_3 / SrTiO_3 interface can be gate modulated. A central issue is to determine the principal effect of the applied electric field. Using magnetotransport studies of a gated structure, we find that the mobility variation is almost five times as large as the sheet carrier density. Furthermore, superconductivity can be suppressed at both positive and negative gate bias. These results indicate that the relative disorder strength strongly increases across the superconductor-insulator transition.
The combination of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and electron correlations can induce unusual phenomena in the metallic interface between SrTiO$_3$ and LaAlO$_3$. We consider effects of Rashba spin-orbit coupling at this interface in the context of the recent observation of anisotropic magnetism. Firstly, we show how Rashba spin-orbit coupling in a system near a band-edge can account for the observed magnetic anisotropy. Secondly, we investigate the coupling between in-plane magnetic-moment anisotropy and nematicity in the form of an orbital imbalance between d$_{xz}$ / d$_{yz}$ orbitals. We esti…
A hysteretic in-plane magnetoresistance develops below the superconducting transition of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces for $\left|H_{/\!/}\right|<$ 0.15 T, independently of the carrier density or oxygen annealing. We show that this hysteresis arises from vortex depinning within a thin superconducting layer, in which the vortices are created by discrete ferromagnetic dipoles located solely above the layer. We find no evidence for finite-momentum pairing or bulk magnetism and hence conclude that ferromagnetism is strictly confined to the interface, where it competes with superconductivity.
Polarization-controlled synchrotron radiation was used to map the electronic structure of buried conducting interfaces of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ in a resonant angle-resolved photoemission experiment. A strong dependence on the light polarization of the Fermi surface and band dispersions is demonstrated, highlighting the distinct Ti 3d orbitals involved in 2D conduction. Samples with different 2D doping levels were prepared and measured by photoemission, revealing different band occupancies and Fermi surface shapes. A direct comparison between the photoemission measurements and advanced first-prin…
We study origin of Rashba spin-orbit interaction at SrTiO$_3$ surfaces and LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces by considering the interplay between atomic spin-orbit coupling and inversion asymmetry at the surface or interface. We show that, in a simple tight-binding model involving 3d $t_{2g}$ bands of Ti ions, the induced spin-orbit coupling in the $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ bands is cubic in momentum whereas the spin-orbit interaction in the $d_{xy}$ band has linear momentum dependence. We also find that the spin-orbit interaction in one-dimensional channels at LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces is linea…
