In this work, we construct numerical solutions to an inverse problem of a nonlinear Helmholtz equation defined in a spherical shell between two concentric spheres centered at the origin.Assuming that the values of the forward problem are known at sufficiently many points, we would like to determine the form of the non-linear term on the right-hand side of the equation via its Chebyshev coefficients.
This paper is concerned with an inverse random source problem for the one-dimensional stochastic Helmholtz equation with attenuation. The source is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field with its covariance operator being a classical pseudo-differential operator. The random sources under consideration are equivalent to the generalized fractional Gaussian random fields which include rough fields and can be even rougher than the white noise, and hence should be interpreted as distributions. The well-posedness of the direct source scattering problem is established in the dis…
We investigate the asymptotic relation between the inverse problems relying on the Helmholtz equation and the radiative transfer equation (RTE) as physical models, in the high-frequency limit. In particular, we evaluate the asymptotic convergence of a generalized version of inverse scattering problem based on the Helmholtz equation, to the inverse scattering problem of the Liouville equation (a simplified version of RTE). The two inverse problems are connected through the Wigner transform that translates the wave-type description on the physical space to the kinetic-type description on the pha…

Perfectly matched layers (PMLs) are formulated and applied to numerically solve nonlocal Helmholtz equations in one and two dimensions. In one dimension, we present the PML modifications for the nonlocal Helmholtz equation with general kernels and theoretically show its effectiveness in some sense. In two dimensions, we give the PML modifications in both Cartesian coordinates and polar coordinates. Based on the PML modifications, nonlocal Helmholtz equations are truncated in one and two dimensional spaces, and asymptotic compatibility schemes are introduced to discretize the resulting truncate…
We consider the computation of a nonlocal Helmholtz equation by using Perfectly Matched Layer (PML). We first derive the nonlocal PML equation by extending PML modifications from the local operator to the nonlocal operator of integral form. We then give stability estimates of some weighted average value of the nonlocal Helmholtz solution and prove that (i) the weighted average value of the nonlocal PML solution decays exponentially in PML layers in one case; (ii) in the other case, the weighted average value of the nonlocal Helmholtz solution itself decays exponentially outside some domain. Pa…
A crucial part of successful wave propagation related inverse problems is an efficient and accurate numerical scheme for solving the seismic wave equations. In particular, the numerical solution to a multi-dimensional Helmholtz equation can be troublesome when the perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary condition is implemented. In this paper, we present a general approach for constructing fourth-order finite difference schemes for the Helmholtz equation with PML in the two-dimensional domain based on point-weighting strategy. Particularly, we develop two optimal fourth-order finite difference …

When solving the Helmholtz equation numerically, the accuracy of numerical solution deteriorates as the wave number $k$ increases, known as `pollution effect' which is directly related to the phase difference between the exact and numerical solutions, caused by the numerical dispersion. In this paper, we propose a dispersion analysis for the continuous interior penalty finite element method (CIP-FEM) and derive an explicit formula of the penalty parameter for the $p^{\rm th}$ order CIP-FEM on tensor product (Cartesian) meshes, with which the phase difference is reduced from $\mathcal{O}\big(k(…
We study a commonly-used second-kind boundary-integral equation for solving the Helmholtz exterior Neumann problem at high frequency, where, writing $Γ$ for the boundary of the obstacle, the relevant integral operators map $L^2(Γ)$ to itself. We prove new frequency-explicit bounds on the norms of both the integral operator and its inverse. The bounds on the norm are valid for piecewise-smooth $Γ$ and are sharp up to factors of $\log k$ (where $k$ is the wavenumber), and the bounds on the norm of the inverse are valid for smooth $Γ$ and are observed to be sharp at least when $Γ$ is smooth with …
This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering problem which aims to determine the spatially distributed dielectric constant coefficient of the 2D Helmholtz equation from multifrequency backscatter data associated with a single direction of the incident plane wave. We propose a globally convergent convexification numerical algorithm to solve this nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. The key advantage of our method over conventional optimization approaches is that it does not require a good first guess about the solution. First, we eliminate the coefficient from the Helmholtz equation …
In this paper we use the Isogeometric method to solve the Helmholtz equation with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition over a bounded physical domain. Starting from the variational formulation of the problem, we show with details how to apply the isogeometric approach to obtain an approximation of the solution using biquadratic B-spline functions. To illustrate the power of the method we solve several difficult problems, which are particular cases of the Helmholtz equation, where the solution has discontinuous gradient in some points, or it is highly oscillatory. For these problems we e…
Numerical solution of heterogeneous Helmholtz problems presents various computational challenges, with descriptive theory remaining out of reach for many popular approaches. Robustness and scalability are key for practical and reliable solvers in large-scale applications, especially for large wave number problems. In this work we explore the use of a GenEO-type coarse space to build a two-level additive Schwarz method applicable to highly indefinite Helmholtz problems. Through a range of numerical tests on a 2D model problem, discretised by finite elements on pollution-free meshes, we observe …
In this paper we introduce a new method called the Dirac Assisted Tree (DAT) method, which can handle 1D heterogeneous Helmholtz equations with arbitrarily large variable wave numbers. DAT breaks an original global problem into many parallel tree-structured small local problems, which are linked together to form a global solution by solving small linking problems. To solve the local problems in DAT, we propose a compact finite difference method (FDM) with arbitrarily high accuracy order and low numerical dispersion for piecewise smooth coefficients and variable wave numbers. This compact FDM i…
We consider the Helmholtz transmission problem with piecewise-constant material coefficients, and the standard associated direct boundary integral equations. For certain coefficients and geometries, the norms of the inverses of the boundary integral operators grow rapidly through an increasing sequence of frequencies, even though this is not the case for the solution operator of the transmission problem; we call this phenomenon that of spurious quasi-resonances. We give a rigorous explanation of why and when spurious quasi-resonances occur, and propose modified boundary integral equations that…
An Isogeometric Boundary Element Method (IgA-BEM) is considered for the numerical solution of Helmholtz problems on 3D bounded or unbounded domains, admitting a smooth conformal multi-patch representation of their finite boundary surface. The discretization space is formed by $C^0$ inter-patch continuous basis functions whose restriction to a patch simplifies to the span of tensor product B-splines composed with the given patch parameterization. For both regular and singular integration, the proposed model utilizes a numerical procedure defined on the support of each trial B-spline function, w…
In this paper we are concerned with numerical methods for nonhomogeneous Helmholtz equations in inhomogeneous media. We design a least squares method for discretization of the considered Helmholtz equations. In this method, an auxiliary unknown is introduced on the common interface of any two neighboring elements and a quadratic subject functional is defined by the jumps of the traces of the solutions of local Helmholtz equations across all the common interfaces, where the local Helmholtz equations are defined on elements and are imposed Robin-type boundary conditions given by the auxiliary un…
The Helmholtz wave scattering problem by screens in 2D can be recast into first-kind integral equations which lead to ill-conditioned linear systems after discretization. We introduce two new preconditioners, in the form of square-roots of local operators respectively for the corresponding problems with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on the arc. They generalize the so-called "analytical" preconditioners available for Lipschitz scatterers. We introduce a functional setting adapted to the singularity of the problem and enabling the analysis of those preconditioners. The efficiency of the metho…
We study numerically the dispersion and dissipation properties of the plane wave virtual element method and the nonconforming Trefftz virtual element method for the Helmholtz problem. Whereas the former method is based on a conforming virtual partition of unity approach in the sense that the local (implicitly defined) basis functions are given as modulations of lowest order harmonic virtual element functions with plane waves, the latter one represents a pure Trefftz method with local edge-related basis functions that are eventually glued together in a nonconforming fashion. We will see that th…
We present a survey of the nonconforming Trefftz virtual element method for the Laplace and Helmholtz equations. For the latter, we present a new abstract analysis, based on weaker assumptions on the stabilization, and numerical results on the dispersion analysis, including comparison with the plane wave discontinuous Galerkin method.

This paper analyses the following question: let $\mathbf{A}_j$, $j=1,2,$ be the Galerkin matrices corresponding to finite-element discretisations of the exterior Dirichlet problem for the heterogeneous Helmholtz equations $\nabla\cdot (A_j \nabla u_j) + k^2 n_j u_j= -f$. How small must $\|A_1 -A_2\|_{L^q}$ and $\|{n_1} - {n_2}\|_{L^q}$ be (in terms of $k$-dependence) for GMRES applied to either $(\mathbf{A}_1)^{-1}\mathbf{A}_2$ or $\mathbf{A}_2(\mathbf{A}_1)^{-1}$ to converge in a $k$-independent number of iterations for arbitrarily large $k$? (In other words, for $\mathbf{A}_1$ to be a good l…
In this paper a mathematical model is given for the scattering of an incident wave from a surface covered with microscopic small Helmholtz resonators, which are cavities with small openings. More precisely, the surface is built upon a finite number of Helmholtz resonators in a unit cell and that unit cell is repeated periodically. To solve the scattering problem, the mathematical framework elaborated in [Ammari et al., Asympt. Anal., 2019] is used. The main result is an approximate formula for the scattered wave in terms of the lengths of the openings. Our framework provides analytic expressio…
Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic acoustic plane wave by a bounded elastic obstacle which is immersed in a homogeneous acoustic medium. This paper concerns an inverse acoustic-elastic interaction problem, which is to determine the location and shape of the elastic obstacle by using either the phased or phaseless far-field data. By introducing the Helmholtz decomposition, the model problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem of the Helmholtz equations. The jump relations are studied for the second derivatives of the single-layer potential in order to establish the correspond…
