We study a commonly-used second-kind boundary-integral equation for solving the Helmholtz exterior Neumann problem at high frequency, where, writing $Γ$ for the boundary of the obstacle, the relevant integral operators map $L^2(Γ)$ to itself. We prove new frequency-explicit bounds on the norms of both the integral operator and its inverse. The bounds on the norm are valid for piecewise-smooth $Γ$ and are sharp up to factors of $\log k$ (where $k$ is the wavenumber), and the bounds on the norm of the inverse are valid for smooth $Γ$ and are observed to be sharp at least when $Γ$ is smooth with strictly-positive curvature. Together, these results give bounds on the condition number of the operator on $L^2(Γ)$; this is the first time $L^2(Γ)$ condition-number bounds have been proved for this operator for obstacles other than balls.
For the Helmholtz equation posed in the exterior of a Dirichlet obstacle, we prove that if there exists a family of quasimodes (as is the case when the exterior of the obstacle has stable trapped rays), then there exist near-zero eigenvalues of the standard variational formulation of the exterior Dirichlet problem (recall that this formulation involves truncating the exterior domain and applying the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the truncation boundary). Our motivation for proving this result is that a) the finite-element method for computing approximations to solutions of the Helmholtz…
We study the Helmholtz equation with electromagnetic-type perturbations, in the exterior of a domain, in dimension $n\geq3$. We prove, by multiplier techniques in the sense of Morawetz, a family of a priori estimates from which the limiting absorption principle follows. Moreover, we give some standard applications to the absence of embedded eigenvalues and zero-resonances, under explicit conditions on the potentials.
The Unified Transform provides a novel method for analyzing boundary value problems for linear and for integrable nonlinear PDEs. The numerical implementation of this method to linear elliptic PDEs formulated in the {\it interior} of a polygon has been investigated by several authors (see the article by Iserles, Smitheman, and one of the authors in this book). Here, we show that the Unified Transform also yields a novel numerical technique for computing the solution of linear elliptic PDEs in the {\it exterior} of a polygon. One of the advantages of this new technique is that it actually yield…
We study in detail Hodge-Helmholtz decompositions in non-smooth exterior domains filled with inhomogeneous and anisotropic media. We show decompositions of alternating differential forms belonging to weighted Sobolev spaces into irrotational and solenoidal forms. These decompositions are essential tools, for example, in electro-magnetic theory for exterior domains. In the appendix we translate our results to the classical framework of vector analysis.
We show that the Neumann problem for Laplace's equation in a convex domain $Ω$ with boundary data in $L^p(\partialΩ)$ is uniquely solvable for $1<p<\infty$. As a consequence, we obtain the Helmholtz decomposition of vector fields in $L^p(Ω, \mathbb{R}^d)$.
Over the last ten years, results from [Melenk-Sauter, 2010], [Melenk-Sauter, 2011], [Esterhazy-Melenk, 2012], and [Melenk-Parsania-Sauter, 2013] decomposing high-frequency Helmholtz solutions into "low"- and "high"-frequency components have had a large impact in the numerical analysis of the Helmholtz equation. These results have been proved for the constant-coefficient Helmholtz equation in either the exterior of a Dirichlet obstacle or an interior domain with an impedance boundary condition. Using the Helffer-Sjöstrand functional calculus, this paper proves analogous decompositions for scatt…
We design sources for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation that can cloak an object by cancelling out the incident field in a region, without the sources completely surrounding the object to hide. As in previous work for real positive wavenumbers, the sources are also determined by the Green identities. The novelty is that we prove that the same approach works for complex wavenumbers which makes it applicable to a variety of media, including media with dispersion, loss and gain. Furthermore, by deriving bounds on Graf's addition formulas with complex arguments, we obtain new estimates that a…
We prove smoothing estimates in Morrey-Campanato spaces for a Helmholtz equation $$ -Lu+zu=f, \qquad -Lu:=\nabla^{b}(a(x)\nabla^{b}u)-c(x)u, \qquad \nabla^{b}:=\nabla+ib(x) $$ with fully variable coefficients, of limited regularity, defined on the exterior of a starshaped compact obstacle in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\ge3$, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The principal part of the operator is a long range perturbation of a constant coefficient operator, while the lower order terms have an almost critical decay. We give explicit conditions on the size of the perturbation which prevent trapping. A…
The aim of this article is to prove an "almost" global existence result for some semilinear wave equations in the plane outside a bounded convex obstacle with the Neumann boundary condition.
The paper is devoted to investigating long time behavior of smooth small data solutions to 3-D quasilinear wave equations outside of compact convex obstacles with Neumann boundary conditions.
This paper is concerned with the asymptotic expansions of the amplitude of the solution of the Helmholtz equation. The original expansions were obtained using a pseudo-differential decomposition of the Dirichlet to Neumann operator. This work uses first and second order approximations of this operator to derive new asymptotic expressions of the normal derivative of the total field. The resulting expansions can be used to appropriately choose the ansatz in the design of high-frequency numerical solvers, such as those based on integral equations, in order to produce more accurate approximation o…
We consider GMRES applied to discretisations of the high-frequency Helmholtz equation with strong trapping; recall that in this situation the problem is exponentially ill-conditioned through an increasing sequence of frequencies. Under certain assumptions about the distribution of the eigenvalues, we prove upper bounds on how the number of GMRES iterations grows with the frequency. Our main focus is on boundary-integral-equation formulations of the exterior Dirichlet and Neumann obstacle problems in 2- and 3-d; for these problems, we investigate numerically the sharpness (in terms of dependenc…
This paper is concerned with resolvent estimates on the real axis for the Helmholtz equation posed in the exterior of a bounded obstacle with Dirichlet boundary conditions when the obstacle is trapping. There are two resolvent estimates for this situation currently in the literature: (i) in the case of elliptic trapping the general "worst case" bound of exponential growth applies, and examples show that this growth can be realised through some sequence of wavenumbers, (ii) in the prototypical case of hyperbolic trapping where the Helmholtz equation is posed in the exterior of two strictly conv…
The Helmholtz wave scattering problem by screens in 2D can be recast into first-kind integral equations which lead to ill-conditioned linear systems after discretization. We introduce two new preconditioners, in the form of square-roots of local operators respectively for the corresponding problems with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on the arc. They generalize the so-called "analytical" preconditioners available for Lipschitz scatterers. We introduce a functional setting adapted to the singularity of the problem and enabling the analysis of those preconditioners. The efficiency of the metho…
We study the problem of estimating the $L^2$ norm of Laplace eigenfunctions on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ when restricted to a hypersurface $H$. We prove mass estimates for the restrictions of eigenfunctions $ϕ_h$, $(h^2 Δ- 1)ϕ_h = 0$, to $H$ in the region exterior to the coball bundle of $H$, on $h^δ$-scales ($0\leq δ< 2/3$). We use this estimate to obtain an $O(1)$ $L^2$-restriction bound for the Neumann data along $H.$ The estimate also applies to eigenfunctions of semiclassical Schrödinger operators.
In this paper we study the dependence of the Hölder estimates on the geometry of a domain with holes for the Neumann problem. For this, we study the Hölder regularity of the solutions to the Dirichlet and Neumann problems in the disk (and in the exterior of the disk), from which we get a relation between harmonic extensions and harmonic functions with prescribed Neumann condition on the boundary of the disk (for both interior and exterior problems).
In this paper we consider the existence of solution for the following class of fractional elliptic problem \begin{equation}\label{00} \left\{\begin{aligned} (-Δ)^su + u &= Q(x) |u|^{p-1}u\;\;\mbox{in}\;\;\R^N \setminus Ω\\ \mathcal{N}_su(x) &= 0\;\;\mbox{in}\;\;Ω, \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation} where $s\in (0,1)$, $N> 2s$, $Ω\subset \R^N$ is a bounded set with smooth boundary, $(-Δ)^s$ denotes the fractional Laplacian operator and $\mathcal{N}_s$ is the nonlocal operator that describes the Neumann boundary condition, which is given by $$ \mathcal{N}_su(x) = C_{N,s} \int_{\R^N \setminus Ω…
The article [HPS] established a monotonicity inequality for the Helmholtz equation and presented applications to shape detection and local uniqueness in inverse boundary problems. The monotonicity inequality states that if two scattering coefficients satisfy $q_1 \leq q_2$, then the corresponding Neumann-to-Dirichlet operators satisfy $Λ(q_1) \leq Λ(q_2)$ up to a finite dimensional subspace. Here we improve the bounds for the dimension of this space. In particular, if $q_1$ and $q_2$ have the same number of positive Neumann eigenvalues, then the finite dimensional space is trivial.
We study an inverse boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map as the data. We consider piecewise constant wavespeeds on an unknown tetrahedral partition and prove a Lipschitz stability estimate in terms of the Hausdorff distance between partitions.
We consider the numerical solution of time-harmonic acoustic scattering by obstacles with uncertain geometries for Dirichlet, Neumann, impedance and transmission boundary conditions. In particular, we aim to quantify diffracted fields originated by small stochastic perturbations of a given relatively smooth nominal shape. Using first-order shape Taylor expansions, we derive tensor deterministic first kind boundary integral equations for the statistical moments of the scattering problems considered. These are then approximated by sparse tensor Galerkin discretizations via the combination techni…
We give integral formulas to approximate solutions of Dirichlet and Neumann problems for Helmholtz equation at high frequencies. These approximations are valid in the complementary of a union of convex compact obstacles. The first step of the iterative procedure is the classical Kirchhoff approximation. Convergence is proved by comparison with the geometrical optics asymptotics. The method is shown to be numerically stable.
We prove Liouville type theorems for $p$-harmonic functions on exterior domains of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space, where $1<p<\infty$ and $d\geq 2$. We show that every positive $p$-harmonic function satisfying zero Dirichlet, Neumann or Robin boundary conditions and having zero limit as $|x|$ tends to infinity is identically zero. In the case of zero Neumann boundary conditions, we establish that any semi-bounded $p$-harmonic function is constant if $1<p<d$. If $p\ge d$, then it is either constant or it behaves asymptotically like the fundamental solution of the homogeneous $p$-Laplace eq…
We prove a limiting absorption principle for a generalized Helmholtz equation on an exterior domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions \begin{equation*} (L+λ)v=f, \qquad λ\in \mathbb{R} \end{equation*} under a Sommerfeld radiation condition at infinity. The operator $L$ is a second order elliptic operator with variable coefficients, the principal part is a small, long range perturbation of $-Δ$, while lower order terms can be singular and large. The main tool is a sharp uniform resolvent estimate, which has independent applications to the problem of embedded eigenvalues and to smoothing estima…
We are concerned with the nonexistence of sign-changing global weak solutions for a class of semilinear parabolic differential inequalities with convection terms in exterior domains. A weight function of the form $t^α|x|^σ$ is considered in front of the power nonlinearity. Two types of non-homogeneous boundary conditions are investigated: Neumann-type and Dirichlet-type boundary conditions. Using a unified approach, for each case, we establish sufficient criteria for the nonexistence of global weak solutions. When $α=0$, the critical exponent in the sense of Fujita is obtained. This exponent i…
In the framework of the Laplacian transport, described by a Robin boundary value problem in an exterior domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we generalize the definition of the Poincaré-Steklov operator to $d$-set boundaries, $n-2< d<n$, and give its spectral properties to compare to the spectra of the interior domain and also of a truncated domain, considered as an approximation of the exterior case. The well-posedness of the Robin boundary value problems for the truncated and exterior domains is given in the general framework of $n$-sets. The results are obtained thanks to a generalization of the conti…
This paper presents a theoretical discussion as well as novel solution algorithms for problems of scattering on smooth two-dimensional domains under Zaremba boundary conditions for which Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are specified on various portions of the domain boundary. The theoretical basis of the proposed numerical methods, which is provided for the first time in the present contribution, concerns detailed information about the singularity structure of solutions of the Helmholtz operator under boundary conditions of Zaremba type. The new numerical method is based on use of Green funct…
We prove the existence of ground state solution to the following problem. \begin{align*} (-Δ)^{s}u+u&=λ|u|^{-γ-1}u+P(x)|u|^{p-1}u,~\text{in}~\mathbb{R}^N\setminusΩ\\ N_su(x)&=0,~\text{in}~Ω\end{align*} where $N\geq2$, $λ>0$, $0<s,γ<1$, $p\in(1,2_s^*-1)$ with $2_s^*=\frac{2N}{N-2s}$. % $0<s^-=\underset{(x,y)\inΩ\timesΩ}{\inf}\{s(x,y)\}\leq s(x,y)\leq s^+=\underset{(x,y)\inΩ\timesΩ}{\sup}\{s(x,y)\}<1$, $0<γ^-=\underset{x\inΩ}{\inf}\{γ(x)\}\leq γ(x)\leq γ^+=\underset{x\inΩ}{\sup}\{γ(x)\}<1$, $1-γ^-<1<p^-=\underset{x\inΩ}{\inf}\{p(x)\}\leq p(x)\leq p^+=\underset{x\inΩ}{\sup}\{p(x)\}<2_{s^-}^*=\und…
We consider Calderón's inverse boundary value problems for a class of nonlinear Helmholtz Schrödinger equations and Maxwell's equations in a bounded domain in $\R^n$. The main method is the higher-order linearization of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the corresponding equations. The local uniqueness of the linearized partial data Calderón's inverse problem is obtained following \cite{DKSU}. The Runge approximation properties and unique continuation principle allow us to extend to global situations. Simultaneous recovery of some unknown cavity$/$boundary and coefficients are given as some appl…
Exterior Dirichlet problems for two-dimensional lattice waves on the semi-infinite triangular lattice are considered. Namely, we study Dirichlet problems for the two-dimensional discrete Helmholtz equation in a plane with a hole. New results are obtained for the existence and uniqueness of the solution in the case of the real wave number $k \in (0, 2\sqrt{2})$ without passing to a complex wave number. Besides, Green's representation formula for the solution is derived with the help of difference potentials. To demonstrate the results, we propose a method for numerical calculation.
In this paper, we are concerned with the asymptotic behavior of the Neumann-Poincare operator for Helmholtz system. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of spherical Bessel function near the origin and/or approach higher order, we prove the asymptotic behavior of spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator when frequency is small enough and/or the order is large enough. The results show that spectral of Neumann-Poincare operator is continuous at the origin and converges to zero from the complex plane in general.
For a second-order strongly elliptic differential operator on an exterior domain in R^n it is known from works of Birman and Solomiak that a change of the boundary condition from the Dirichlet condition to an elliptic Neumann or Robin condition leaves the essential spectrum unchanged, in such a way that the spectrum of the difference between the inverses satisfies a Weyl-type asymptotic formula. We show that one can augment, but not diminish, the essential spectrum by imposition of other Neumann-type non-elliptic boundary conditions. - The results are extended to 2m-order operators, where it i…
We consider blow-up results for a system of inhomogeneous wave inequalities in exterior domains. We will handle three type boundary conditions: Dirichlet type, Neumann type and mixed boundary conditions. We use a unified approach to show the optimal criteria of Fujita type for each case. Our study yields naturally optimal nonexistence results for the corresponding stationary wave system and equation. We provide many new results and close some open questions.
Let \begin{equation*} L=\sum_{i,j=1}^da_{i,j}\frac{\partial^2}{\partial x_i\partial x_j}-\sum_{i=1}^db_i\frac{\partial}{\partial x_i} \end{equation*} be a second order elliptic operator and consider the reaction-diffusion equation with Neumann boundary condition, \begin{equation*} \begin{aligned} &Lu=Λu^p\ \text{in}\ \mathbb{R}^d-D;\\ &\nabla u\cdot \bar n=-h\ \text{on}\ \partial D;\\ &u\ge0 \ \text{is minimal}, \end{aligned} \end{equation*} where $p\in(0,1)$, $d\ge2$, $h$ and $Λ$ are continuous positive functions, $D\subset R^d$ is bounded, and $\bar n$ is the unit inward normal to the domain…
We prove well-posedness results and a priori bounds on the solution of the Helmholtz equation $\nabla\cdot(A\nabla u) + k^2 n u = -f$, posed either in $\mathbb{R}^d$ or in the exterior of a star-shaped Lipschitz obstacle, for a class of random $A$ and $n,$ random data $f$, and for all $k>0$. The particular class of $A$ and $n$ and the conditions on the obstacle ensure that the problem is nontrapping almost surely. These are the first well-posedness results and a priori bounds for the stochastic Helmholtz equation for arbitrarily large $k$ and for $A$ and $n$ varying independently of $k$. These…
We study the inverse boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation using the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map at selected frequencies as the data. A conditional Lipschitz stability estimate for the inverse problem holds in the case of wavespeeds that are a linear combination of piecewise constant functions (following a domain partition) and gives a framework in which the scheme converges. The stability constant grows exponentially as the number of subdomains in the domain partition increases. We establish an order optimal upper bound for the stability constant. We eventually realize computational …
Numerically solving the 2D Helmholtz equation is widely known to be very difficult largely due to its highly oscillatory solution, which brings about the pollution effect. A very fine mesh size is necessary to deal with a large wavenumber leading to a severely ill-conditioned huge coefficient matrix. To understand and tackle such challenges, it is crucial to analyze how the solution of the 2D Helmholtz equation depends on (perturbed) boundary and source data for large wavenumbers. In fact, this stability analysis is critical in the error analysis and development of effective numerical schemes.…
