This paper is concerned with an inverse random source problem for the one-dimensional stochastic Helmholtz equation with attenuation. The source is assumed to be a microlocally isotropic Gaussian random field with its covariance operator being a classical pseudo-differential operator. The random sources under consideration are equivalent to the generalized fractional Gaussian random fields which include rough fields and can be even rougher than the white noise, and hence should be interpreted as distributions. The well-posedness of the direct source scattering problem is established in the distribution sense. The micro-correlation strength of the random source, which appears to be the strength in the principal symbol of the covariance operator, is proved to be uniquely determined by the wave field in an open measurement set. Numerical experiments are presented for the white noise model to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method.
In this work, we construct numerical solutions to an inverse problem of a nonlinear Helmholtz equation defined in a spherical shell between two concentric spheres centered at the origin.Assuming that the values of the forward problem are known at sufficiently many points, we would like to determine the form of the non-linear term on the right-hand side of the equation via its Chebyshev coefficients.
We investigate the asymptotic relation between the inverse problems relying on the Helmholtz equation and the radiative transfer equation (RTE) as physical models, in the high-frequency limit. In particular, we evaluate the asymptotic convergence of a generalized version of inverse scattering problem based on the Helmholtz equation, to the inverse scattering problem of the Liouville equation (a simplified version of RTE). The two inverse problems are connected through the Wigner transform that translates the wave-type description on the physical space to the kinetic-type description on the pha…

We study a commonly-used second-kind boundary-integral equation for solving the Helmholtz exterior Neumann problem at high frequency, where, writing $Γ$ for the boundary of the obstacle, the relevant integral operators map $L^2(Γ)$ to itself. We prove new frequency-explicit bounds on the norms of both the integral operator and its inverse. The bounds on the norm are valid for piecewise-smooth $Γ$ and are sharp up to factors of $\log k$ (where $k$ is the wavenumber), and the bounds on the norm of the inverse are valid for smooth $Γ$ and are observed to be sharp at least when $Γ$ is smooth with …
This paper is concerned with the inverse scattering problem which aims to determine the spatially distributed dielectric constant coefficient of the 2D Helmholtz equation from multifrequency backscatter data associated with a single direction of the incident plane wave. We propose a globally convergent convexification numerical algorithm to solve this nonlinear and ill-posed inverse problem. The key advantage of our method over conventional optimization approaches is that it does not require a good first guess about the solution. First, we eliminate the coefficient from the Helmholtz equation …
A crucial part of successful wave propagation related inverse problems is an efficient and accurate numerical scheme for solving the seismic wave equations. In particular, the numerical solution to a multi-dimensional Helmholtz equation can be troublesome when the perfectly matched layer (PML) boundary condition is implemented. In this paper, we present a general approach for constructing fourth-order finite difference schemes for the Helmholtz equation with PML in the two-dimensional domain based on point-weighting strategy. Particularly, we develop two optimal fourth-order finite difference …
We consider the Helmholtz transmission problem with piecewise-constant material coefficients, and the standard associated direct boundary integral equations. For certain coefficients and geometries, the norms of the inverses of the boundary integral operators grow rapidly through an increasing sequence of frequencies, even though this is not the case for the solution operator of the transmission problem; we call this phenomenon that of spurious quasi-resonances. We give a rigorous explanation of why and when spurious quasi-resonances occur, and propose modified boundary integral equations that…
This paper analyses the following question: let $\mathbf{A}_j$, $j=1,2,$ be the Galerkin matrices corresponding to finite-element discretisations of the exterior Dirichlet problem for the heterogeneous Helmholtz equations $\nabla\cdot (A_j \nabla u_j) + k^2 n_j u_j= -f$. How small must $\|A_1 -A_2\|_{L^q}$ and $\|{n_1} - {n_2}\|_{L^q}$ be (in terms of $k$-dependence) for GMRES applied to either $(\mathbf{A}_1)^{-1}\mathbf{A}_2$ or $\mathbf{A}_2(\mathbf{A}_1)^{-1}$ to converge in a $k$-independent number of iterations for arbitrarily large $k$? (In other words, for $\mathbf{A}_1$ to be a good l…
Consider the scattering of a time-harmonic acoustic plane wave by a bounded elastic obstacle which is immersed in a homogeneous acoustic medium. This paper concerns an inverse acoustic-elastic interaction problem, which is to determine the location and shape of the elastic obstacle by using either the phased or phaseless far-field data. By introducing the Helmholtz decomposition, the model problem is reduced to a coupled boundary value problem of the Helmholtz equations. The jump relations are studied for the second derivatives of the single-layer potential in order to establish the correspond…
Finding fast yet accurate numerical solutions to the Helmholtz equation remains a challenging task. The pollution error (i.e. the discrepancy between the numerical and analytical wave number k) requires the mesh resolution to be kept fine enough to obtain accurate solutions. A recent study showed that the use of Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) for the spatial discretization significantly reduces the pollution error. However, solving the resulting linear systems by means of a direct solver remains computationally expensive when large wave numbers or multiple dimensions are considered. An alternativ…
This paper is concerned with the mathematical analysis of experimental methods for the estimation of the power of an uncorrelated, extended aeroacoustic source from measurements of correlations of pressure fluctuations. We formulate a continuous, infinite dimensional model describing these experimental techniques based on the convected Helmholtz equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or $\mathbb{R}^2$. As a main result we prove that an unknown, compactly supported source power function is uniquely determined by idealized, noise-free correlation measurements. Our framework further allows for a precise char…

Frequency-domain full-waveform inversion (FWI) is suitable for long-offset stationary-recording acquisition, since reliable subsurface models can be reconstructed with a few frequencies and attenuation is easily implemented without computational overhead. In the frequency domain, wave modelling is a Helmholtz-type boundary-value problem which requires to solve a large and sparse system of linear equations per frequency with multiple right-hand sides (sources). This system can be solved with direct or iterative methods. While the former are suitable for FWI application on 3D dense OBC acquisiti…
In this paper, we present a data-driven approach to iteratively solve the discrete heterogeneous Helmholtz equation at high wavenumbers. In our approach, we combine classical iterative solvers with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to form a preconditioner which is applied within a Krylov solver. For the preconditioner, we use a CNN of type U-Net that operates in conjunction with multigrid ingredients. Two types of preconditioners are proposed 1) U-Net as a coarse grid solver, and 2) U-Net as a deflation operator with shifted Laplacian V-cycles. Following our training scheme and data-augmen…
