In this paper we use the Isogeometric method to solve the Helmholtz equation with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition over a bounded physical domain. Starting from the variational formulation of the problem, we show with details how to apply the isogeometric approach to obtain an approximation of the solution using biquadratic B-spline functions. To illustrate the power of the method we solve several difficult problems, which are particular cases of the Helmholtz equation, where the solution has discontinuous gradient in some points, or it is highly oscillatory. For these problems we explain how to select the knots of B-spline quadratic functions and how to insert knew knots in order to obtain good approximations of the exact solution on regions with irregular boundary. The results, obtained with our Julia implementation of the method, prove that isogeometric approach produces approximations with a relative small error and computational cost.
We are interested in a fast solver for linear systems obtained by discretizing the Stokes problem with multi-patch Isogeometric Analysis. We use Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) methods. In resent years, IETI-DPand related methods have been studied extensively, mainly for the Poisson problem. For the Stokes equations, several challenges arise since the corresponding system is not positive definite, but has saddle point structure. Moreover, the Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions have a null-space, consisting of the constant pressure modes. This pos…
Finding fast yet accurate numerical solutions to the Helmholtz equation remains a challenging task. The pollution error (i.e. the discrepancy between the numerical and analytical wave number k) requires the mesh resolution to be kept fine enough to obtain accurate solutions. A recent study showed that the use of Isogeometric Analysis (IgA) for the spatial discretization significantly reduces the pollution error. However, solving the resulting linear systems by means of a direct solver remains computationally expensive when large wave numbers or multiple dimensions are considered. An alternativ…
This paper presents a shape optimisation system to design the shape of an acoustically-hard object in the three-dimensional open space. Boundary element method (BEM) is suitable to analyse such an exterior field. However, the conventional BEM, which is based on piecewise polynomial shape and interpolation functions, can require many design variables because they are usually chosen as a part of the nodes of the underlying boundary element mesh. In addition, it is not easy for the conventional method to compute the gradient of the sound pressure on the surface, which is necessary to compute the …

This paper focuses on the spectral properties of the mass and stiffness matrices for acoustic wave problems discretized with Isogeometric analysis (IGA) collocation methods in space and Newmark methods in time. Extensive numerical results are reported for the eigenvalues and condition numbers of the acoustic mass and stiffness matrices in the reference square domain with Dirichlet, Neumann and absorbing boundary conditions, varying the polynomial degree $p$, mesh size $h$, regularity $k$, of the IGA discretization and the time step $Δt$ and parameter $β$ of the Newmark method. Results on the s…
We introduce a boundary penalization technique to improve the spectral approximation of isogeometric analysis (IGA). The technique removes the outliers appearing in the high-frequency region of the approximate spectrum when using the $C^{p-1}, p$-th ($p\ge3$) order isogeometric elements. We focus on the classical Laplacian (Dirichlet) eigenvalue problem in 1D to illustrate the idea and then use the tensor-product structure to generate the stiffness and mass matrices for multiple dimensional problems. To remove the outliers, we penalize the product of the higher-order derivatives from both the …

We examine the use of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann coarse space within an additive Schwarz method to solve the Helmholtz equation in 2D. In particular, we focus on the selection of how many eigenfunctions should go into the coarse space. We find that wave number independent convergence of a preconditioned iterative method can be achieved in certain special cases with an appropriate and novel choice of threshold in the selection criteria. However, this property is lost in a more general setting, including the heterogeneous problem. Nonetheless, the approach converges in a small number of iterations…

The surrogate matrix methodology delivers low-cost approximations of matrices (i.e., surrogate matrices) which are normally computed in Galerkin methods via element-scale quadrature formulas. In this paper, the methodology is applied to a number of model problems in wave mechanics treated in the Galerkin isogeometic setting. Herein, the resulting surrogate methods are shown to significantly reduce the assembly time in high frequency wave propagation problems. In particular, the assembly time is reduced with negligible loss in solution accuracy. This paper also extends the scope of previous art…
This study proposes a novel coupled-mode theory for two-dimensional exterior Helmholtz problems. The proposed approach is based on the separation of the entire space R2 into a fictitious disk and its exterior. The disk is allocated in such a way that it comprises all the inhomogeneity; therefore, the exterior supports cylindrical waves with a continuous spectrum. For the interior, we expand an unknown wave field using normal modes that satisfy some auxiliary boundary conditions on the surface of the disk. For the interior expansion, we propose combining the Neumann and Dirichlet normal modes. …
We consider the Cauchy problem for the Helmholtz equation with a domain in R^d, d>2 with N cylindrical outlets to infinity with bounded inclusions in R^{d-1}. Cauchy data are prescribed on the boundary of the bounded domains and the aim is to find solution on the unbounded part of the boundary. In 1989, Kozlov and Maz'ya proposed an alternating iterative method for solving Cauchy problems associated with elliptic,self-adjoint and positive-definite operators in bounded domains. Different variants of this method for solving Cauchy problems associated with Helmholtz-type operators exists. We cons…
An Isogeometric Boundary Element Method (IgA-BEM) is considered for the numerical solution of Helmholtz problems on 3D bounded or unbounded domains, admitting a smooth conformal multi-patch representation of their finite boundary surface. The discretization space is formed by $C^0$ inter-patch continuous basis functions whose restriction to a patch simplifies to the span of tensor product B-splines composed with the given patch parameterization. For both regular and singular integration, the proposed model utilizes a numerical procedure defined on the support of each trial B-spline function, w…
We solve first-kind Fredholm boundary integral equations arising from Helmholtz and Laplace problems on bounded, smooth screens in three-dimensions with either Dirichlet or Neumann conditions. The proposed Galerkin-Bubnov method takes as discretization elements pushed-forward weighted azimuthal projections of standard spherical harmonics onto the canonical disk. We show that these bases allow for spectral convergence and provide fully discrete error analysis. Numerical experiments support our claims, with results comparable to Nyström-type and $hp$-methods.
For the Helmholtz equation posed in the exterior of a Dirichlet obstacle, we prove that if there exists a family of quasimodes (as is the case when the exterior of the obstacle has stable trapped rays), then there exist near-zero eigenvalues of the standard variational formulation of the exterior Dirichlet problem (recall that this formulation involves truncating the exterior domain and applying the exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the truncation boundary). Our motivation for proving this result is that a) the finite-element method for computing approximations to solutions of the Helmholtz…
Coastal erosion describes the displacement of sand caused by the movement induced by tides, waves or currents. Some of its wave phenomena are modeled by Helmholtz-type equations. Our purposes, in this paper are, first, to study optimal shapes obstacles to mitigate sand transport under the constraint of the Helmholtz equation. And the second side of this work is related to Dirichlet and Neumann spectral problems. We show the existence of optimal shapes in a general admissible set of quasi open sets. And necessary optimality conditions of first order are given in a regular framework.
We present a novel isogeometric method, namely the Immersed Boundary-Conformal Method (IBCM), that features a layer of discretization conformal to the boundary while employing a simple background mesh for the remaining domain. In this manner, we leverage the geometric flexibility of the immersed boundary method with the advantages of a conformal discretization, such as intuitive control of mesh resolution around the boundary, higher accuracy per degree of freedom, automatic satisfaction of interface kinematic conditions, and the ability to strongly impose Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the …
In this paper we discuss the convergence of state-of-the-art optimized Schwarz transmission conditions for Helmholtz problems defined on closed domains (i.e. setups which do not exhibit an outgoing wave condition), as commonly encountered when modeling cavities. In particular, the impact of back-propagating waves on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is analyzed. Afterwards, the performance of the well-established optimized 0th-order, evanescent modes damping, optimized 2nd-order and Padé-localized square-root transmission conditions is discussed.
Over the last ten years, results from [Melenk-Sauter, 2010], [Melenk-Sauter, 2011], [Esterhazy-Melenk, 2012], and [Melenk-Parsania-Sauter, 2013] decomposing high-frequency Helmholtz solutions into "low"- and "high"-frequency components have had a large impact in the numerical analysis of the Helmholtz equation. These results have been proved for the constant-coefficient Helmholtz equation in either the exterior of a Dirichlet obstacle or an interior domain with an impedance boundary condition. Using the Helffer-Sjöstrand functional calculus, this paper proves analogous decompositions for scatt…
Numerical resolution of exterior Helmholtz problems requires some approach to domain truncation. As an alternative to approximate nonreflecting boundary conditions and invocation of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, we introduce a new, nonlocal boundary condition. This condition is exact and requires the evaluation of layer potentials involving the free space Green's function. However, it seems to work in general unstructured geometry, and Galerkin finite element discretization leads to convergence under the usual mesh constraints imposed by Gårding-type inequalities. The nonlocal boundary conditi…
We use the Method of Difference Potentials (MDP) to solve a non-overlapping domain decomposition formulation of the Helmholtz equation. The MDP reduces the Helmholtz equation on each subdomain to a Calderon's boundary equation with projection on its boundary. The unknowns for the Calderon's equation are the Dirichlet and Neumann data. Coupling between neighboring subdomains is rendered by applying their respective Calderon's equations to the same data at the common interface. Solutions on individual subdomains are computed concurrently using a straightforward direct solver. We provide numerica…
The main aim of this article is to analyze mixed finite element method for the second order Dirichlet boundary control problem. Therein, we develop both a priori and a posteriori error analysis using the energy space based approach. We obtain optimal order a priori error estimates in the energy norm and $L^2$-norm with the help of auxiliary problems. The reliability and the efficiency of proposed a posteriori error estimator is discussed using the Helmholtz decomposition. Numerical experiments are presented to confirm the theoretical findings.
The analysis of electromagnetic scattering in the isogeometric analysis (IGA) framework based on Loop subdivision has long been restricted to simply-connected geometries. The inability to analyze multiply-connected objects is a glaring omission. In this paper, we address this challenge. IGA provides seamless integration between the geometry and analysis by using the same basis set to represent both. In particular, IGA methods using subdivision basis sets exploit the fact that the basis functions used for surface description are smooth (with continuous second derivatives) almost everywhere. On …
High-Order Nyström/Convolution-Quadrature Solution of Time-Domain Scattering from Closed and Open Lipschitz Boundaries with Dirichlet and Neumann Boundary Conditions
We consider the Helmholtz equation defined in unbounded domains, external to 2D bounded ones, endowed with a Dirichlet condition on the boundary and the Sommerfeld radiation condition at infinity. To solve it, we reduce the infinite region, in which the solution is defined, to a bounded computational one, delimited by a curved smooth artificial boundary and we impose on this latter a non reflecting condition of boundary integral type. Then, we apply the curved virtual element method in the finite computational domain, combined with the one-equation boundary element method on the artificial bou…
In this paper we extend analysis of the WaveHoltz iteration -- a time-domain iterative method for the solution of the Helmholtz equation. We expand the previous analysis of energy conserving problems and prove convergence of the WaveHoltz iteration for problems with impedance boundary conditions in a single spatial dimension. We then consider interior Dirichlet/Neumann problems with damping in any spatial dimension, and show that for a sufficient level of damping the WaveHoltz iteration converges in a number of iteration independent of the frequency. Finally, we present a discrete analysis of …

The Helmholtz wave scattering problem by screens in 2D can be recast into first-kind integral equations which lead to ill-conditioned linear systems after discretization. We introduce two new preconditioners, in the form of square-roots of local operators respectively for the corresponding problems with Dirichlet and Neumann conditions on the arc. They generalize the so-called "analytical" preconditioners available for Lipschitz scatterers. We introduce a functional setting adapted to the singularity of the problem and enabling the analysis of those preconditioners. The efficiency of the metho…
