In this paper we discuss the convergence of state-of-the-art optimized Schwarz transmission conditions for Helmholtz problems defined on closed domains (i.e. setups which do not exhibit an outgoing wave condition), as commonly encountered when modeling cavities. In particular, the impact of back-propagating waves on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is analyzed. Afterwards, the performance of the well-established optimized 0th-order, evanescent modes damping, optimized 2nd-order and Padé-localized square-root transmission conditions is discussed.
In this paper we are concerned with restricted additive Schwarz with local impedance transformation conditions for a family of Helmholtz problems in two dimensions. These problems are discretized by the finite element method with conforming nodal finite elements. We design and analyze a new adaptive coarse space for this kind of restricted additive Schwarz method. This coarse space is spanned by some eigenvalue functions of local generalized eigenvalue problems, which are defined by weighted positive semi-definite bilinear forms on subspaces consisting of local discrete Helmholtz-harmonic func…
In this paper we revisit the Restricted Additive Schwarz method for solving discretized Helmholtz problems, using impedance boundary conditions on subdomains (sometimes called ORAS). We present this method in its variational form and show that it can be seen as a finite element discretization of a parallel overlapping domain decomposition method defined at the PDE level. In a fourthcoming paper, the authors have proved certain contractive properties of the error propagation operator for this method at the PDE level, under certain geometrical assumptions. We illustrate computationally that thes…
This paper explores a family of generalized sweeping preconditionners for Helmholtz problems with non-overlapping checkerboard partition of the computational domain. The domain decomposition procedure relies on high-order transmission conditions and cross-point treatments, which cannot scale without an efficient preconditioning technique when the number of subdomains increases. With the proposed approach, existing sweeping preconditioners, such as the symmetric Gauss-Seidel and parallel double sweep preconditioners, can be applied to checkerboard partitions with different sweeping directions (…

The Restricted Additive Schwarz method with impedance transmission conditions, also known as the Optimised Restricted Additive Schwarz (ORAS) method, is a simple overlapping one-level parallel domain decomposition method, which has been successfully used as an iterative solver and as a preconditioner for discretized Helmholtz boundary-value problems. In this paper, we give, for the first time, a convergence analysis for ORAS as an iterative solver -- and also as a preconditioner -- for nodal finite element Helmholtz systems of any polynomial order. The analysis starts by showing (for general d…

Comparison of substructured non-overlapping domain decomposition and overlapping additive Schwarz methods for large-scale Helmholtz problems with multiple sources
In this paper we discuss different transmission operators for the non-overlapping Schwarz method which are suited for solving the time-harmonic Helmholtz equation in cavities (i.e. closed domains which do not feature an outgoing wave condition). Such problems are heavily impacted by back-propagating waves which are often neglected when devising optimized transmission operators for the Schwarz method. This work explores new operators taking into account those back-propagating waves and compares them with well-established operators neglecting these contributions. Notably, this paper focuses on t…

In this paper, we design and analyze two new methods based on additive average Schwarz -- AAS method introduced in \cite{MR1943457}. The new methods design for elliptic problems with highly heterogeneous coefficients. The methods are of the non-overlapping type, and the subdomain interactions obtain via the coarse space. The first method is the minimum energy Schwarz -- MES method. MES has the minimum energy for the coarse space with constant extension inside each subdomain. The condition number of the MES method is always smaller than in the AAS method. The second class of methods is the non-…

We analyse parallel overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition methods for the Helmholtz equation, where the subdomain problems satisfy first-order absorbing (impedance) transmission conditions, and exchange of information between subdomains is achieved using a partition of unity. We provide a novel analysis of this method at the PDE level (without discretization). First, we formulate the method as a fixed point iteration, and show (in dimensions 1,2,3) that it is well-defined in a tensor product of appropriate local function spaces, each with $L^2$ impedance boundary data. Given this, we then o…
Domain decomposition methods are widely used for the numerical solution of partial differential equations on high performance computers. We develop an adjoint-based a posteriori error analysis for both multiplicative and additive overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition methods. The numerical error in a user-specified functional of the solution (quantity of interest) is decomposed into contributions that arise as a result of the finite iteration between the subdomains and from the spatial discretization. The spatial discretization contribution is further decomposed into contributions arising f…

The Schwarz Waveform Relaxation algorithm (SWR) exchanges the waveform of boundary value between neighbouring sub-domains, which provides a more efficient way than the other Schwarz algorithms to realize distributed computation. However, the convergence speed of the traditional SWR is slow, and various optimization strategies have been brought in to accelerate the convergence. In this paper, we propose a non-iterative overlapping variant of SWR for wave equation, which is named Relative Schwarz Waveform Relaxation algorithm (RSWR). RSWR is inspired by the physical observation that the velocity…
A natural medium for wave propagation comprises a coupled bounded heterogeneous region and an unbounded homogeneous free-space. Frequency-domain wave propagation models in the medium, such as the variable coefficient Helmholtz equation, include a faraway decay radiation condition (RC). It is desirable to develop algorithms that incorporate the full physics of the heterogeneous and unbounded medium wave propagation model, and avoid an approximation of the RC. In this work we first present and analyze an overlapping decomposition framework that is equivalent to the full-space heterogeneous-homog…
We propose a component-based (CB) parametric model order reduction (pMOR) formulation for parameterized nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) based on overlapping subdomains. Our approach reads as a constrained optimization statement that penalizes the jump at the components' interfaces subject to the approximate satisfaction of the PDE in each local subdomain. Furthermore, the approach relies on the decomposition of the local states into a port component -- associated with the solution on interior boundaries -- and a bubble component that vanishes at ports: since the bubble…
In this paper, we propose and test a novel diagonal sweeping domain decomposition method (DDM) with source transfer for solving the high-frequency Helmholtz equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In the method the computational domain is partitioned into overlapping checkerboard subdomains for source transfer with the perfectly matched layer (PML) technique, then a set of diagonal sweeps over the subdomains are specially designed to solve the system efficiently. The method improves the additive overlapping DDM (W. Leng and L. Ju, 2019) and the L-sweeps method (M. Taus, et al., 2019) by employing a more e…
We use the Method of Difference Potentials (MDP) to solve a non-overlapping domain decomposition formulation of the Helmholtz equation. The MDP reduces the Helmholtz equation on each subdomain to a Calderon's boundary equation with projection on its boundary. The unknowns for the Calderon's equation are the Dirichlet and Neumann data. Coupling between neighboring subdomains is rendered by applying their respective Calderon's equations to the same data at the common interface. Solutions on individual subdomains are computed concurrently using a straightforward direct solver. We provide numerica…

We consider the swelling of hydrogels as an example of a chemo-mechanical problem with strong coupling between the mechanical balance relations and the mass diffusion. The problem is cast into a minimization formulation using a time-explicit approach for the dependency of the dissipation potential on the deformation and the swelling volume fraction to obtain symmetric matrices, which are typically better suited for iterative solvers. The MPI-parallel implementation uses the software libraries deal.II, p4est and FROSch (Fast of Robust Overlapping Schwarz). FROSch is part of the Trilinos library…
The research of two-level overlapping Schwarz (TL-OS) method based on constrained energy minimizing coarse space is still in its infancy, and there exist some defects, e.g. mainly for second order elliptic problem and too heavy computational cost of coarse space construction. In this paper, by introducing appropriate assumptions, we propose more concise coarse basis functions for general Hermitian positive and definite discrete systems, and establish the algorithmic and theoretical frameworks of the corresponding TL-OS methods. Furthermore, to enhance the practicability of the algorithm, we de…
