In this paper, we design and analyze two new methods based on additive average Schwarz -- AAS method introduced in \cite{MR1943457}. The new methods design for elliptic problems with highly heterogeneous coefficients. The methods are of the non-overlapping type, and the subdomain interactions obtain via the coarse space. The first method is the minimum energy Schwarz -- MES method. MES has the minimum energy for the coarse space with constant extension inside each subdomain. The condition number of the MES method is always smaller than in the AAS method. The second class of methods is the non-overlapping spectral additive Schwarz -- NOSAS methods based on low-rank discrete energy harmonic extension in each subdomain. To achieve the low-rank, we solve a generalized eigenvalue problem in each subdomain. NOSAS have the minimum energy for a given rank of the coarse space. The condition number of the NOSAS methods does not depend on the coefficients. Additionally, the NOSAS methods have good parallelization properties. The size of the global problem is equal to the total number of eigenvalues chosen in each subdomain. It is only related to the number of high-permeable islands that touch the subdomains' interface.
Domain decomposition methods are widely used for the numerical solution of partial differential equations on high performance computers. We develop an adjoint-based a posteriori error analysis for both multiplicative and additive overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition methods. The numerical error in a user-specified functional of the solution (quantity of interest) is decomposed into contributions that arise as a result of the finite iteration between the subdomains and from the spatial discretization. The spatial discretization contribution is further decomposed into contributions arising f…
In this paper we discuss the convergence of state-of-the-art optimized Schwarz transmission conditions for Helmholtz problems defined on closed domains (i.e. setups which do not exhibit an outgoing wave condition), as commonly encountered when modeling cavities. In particular, the impact of back-propagating waves on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is analyzed. Afterwards, the performance of the well-established optimized 0th-order, evanescent modes damping, optimized 2nd-order and Padé-localized square-root transmission conditions is discussed.

The Schwarz Waveform Relaxation algorithm (SWR) exchanges the waveform of boundary value between neighbouring sub-domains, which provides a more efficient way than the other Schwarz algorithms to realize distributed computation. However, the convergence speed of the traditional SWR is slow, and various optimization strategies have been brought in to accelerate the convergence. In this paper, we propose a non-iterative overlapping variant of SWR for wave equation, which is named Relative Schwarz Waveform Relaxation algorithm (RSWR). RSWR is inspired by the physical observation that the velocity…
In this paper we discuss different transmission operators for the non-overlapping Schwarz method which are suited for solving the time-harmonic Helmholtz equation in cavities (i.e. closed domains which do not feature an outgoing wave condition). Such problems are heavily impacted by back-propagating waves which are often neglected when devising optimized transmission operators for the Schwarz method. This work explores new operators taking into account those back-propagating waves and compares them with well-established operators neglecting these contributions. Notably, this paper focuses on t…
Substructured domain decomposition (DD) methods have been extensively studied, and they are usually associated with nonoverlapping decompositions. We introduce here a substructured version of Restricted Additive Schwarz (RAS) which we call SRAS, and we discuss its advantages compared to the standard volume formulation of the Schwarz method when they are used both as iterative solvers and preconditioners for a Krylov method. To extend SRAS to nonlinear problems, we introduce SRASPEN (Substructured Restricted Additive Schwarz Preconditioned Exact Newton), where SRAS is used as a preconditioner f…
In this paper, we extend the additive average Schwarz method to solve second order elliptic boundary value problems with heterogeneous coefficients inside the subdomains and across their interfaces by the mortar technique, where the mortar finite element discretization is on nonmatching meshes. In this two-level method, we enrich the coarse space in two different ways, i.e., by adding eigenfunctions of two variants of the generalized eigenvalue problems. We prove that the condition numbers of the systems of algebraic equations resulting from the extended additive average Schwarz method, corres…
This paper gives a unified convergence analysis of additive Schwarz methods for general convex optimization problems. Resembling to the fact that additive Schwarz methods for linear problems are preconditioned Richardson methods, we prove that additive Schwarz methods for general convex optimization are in fact gradient methods. Then an abstract framework for convergence analysis of additive Schwarz methods is proposed. The proposed framework applied to linear elliptic problems agrees with the classical theory. We present applications of the proposed framework to various interesting convex opt…
We propose a component-based (CB) parametric model order reduction (pMOR) formulation for parameterized nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) based on overlapping subdomains. Our approach reads as a constrained optimization statement that penalizes the jump at the components' interfaces subject to the approximate satisfaction of the PDE in each local subdomain. Furthermore, the approach relies on the decomposition of the local states into a port component -- associated with the solution on interior boundaries -- and a bubble component that vanishes at ports: since the bubble…
The dynamic iteration method with a restricted additive Schwarz splitting is investigated to co-simulate linear differential algebraic equations system coming from RLC electrical circuit with linear components. We show the pure linear convergence or divergence of the method with respect to the linear operator belonging to the restricted additive Schwarz interface. It allows us to accelerate it toward the true solution with the Aitken's technique for accelerating convergence. This provides a dynamic iteration method less sensitive to the splitting. Numerical examples with convergent and diverge…
In this paper we revisit the Restricted Additive Schwarz method for solving discretized Helmholtz problems, using impedance boundary conditions on subdomains (sometimes called ORAS). We present this method in its variational form and show that it can be seen as a finite element discretization of a parallel overlapping domain decomposition method defined at the PDE level. In a fourthcoming paper, the authors have proved certain contractive properties of the error propagation operator for this method at the PDE level, under certain geometrical assumptions. We illustrate computationally that thes…

Reduced basis methods build low-rank approximation spaces for the solution sets of parameterized PDEs by computing solutions of the given PDE for appropriately selected snapshot parameters. Localized reduced basis methods reduce the offline cost of computing these snapshot solutions by instead constructing a global space from spatially localized less expensive problems. In the case of online enrichment, these local problems are iteratively solved in regions of high residual and correspond to subdomain solves in domain decomposition methods. We show in this note that indeed there is a close rel…
The Restricted Additive Schwarz method with impedance transmission conditions, also known as the Optimised Restricted Additive Schwarz (ORAS) method, is a simple overlapping one-level parallel domain decomposition method, which has been successfully used as an iterative solver and as a preconditioner for discretized Helmholtz boundary-value problems. In this paper, we give, for the first time, a convergence analysis for ORAS as an iterative solver -- and also as a preconditioner -- for nodal finite element Helmholtz systems of any polynomial order. The analysis starts by showing (for general d…
Based on an observation that additive Schwarz methods for general convex optimization can be interpreted as gradient methods, we propose an acceleration scheme for additive Schwarz methods. Adopting acceleration techniques developed for gradient methods such as momentum and adaptive restarting, the convergence rate of additive Schwarz methods is greatly improved. The proposed acceleration scheme does not require any a priori information on the levels of smoothness and sharpness of a target energy functional, so that it can be applied to various convex optimization problems. Numerical results f…
This paper presents a novel backtracking strategy for additive Schwarz methods for general convex optimization problems as an acceleration scheme. The proposed backtracking strategy is independent of local solvers, so that it can be applied to any algorithms that can be represented in an abstract framework of additive Schwarz methods. Allowing for adaptive increasing and decreasing of the step size along the iterations, the convergence rate of an algorithm is greatly improved. Improved convergence rate of the algorithm is proven rigorously. In addition, combining the proposed backtracking stra…
Comparison of substructured non-overlapping domain decomposition and overlapping additive Schwarz methods for large-scale Helmholtz problems with multiple sources
The computation time for reservoir simulation is dominated by the linear solver. The sets of linear equations which arise in reservoir simulation have two distinctive features: the problems are usually highly anisotropic, with a dominant vertical flow direction, and the commonly used fully implicit method requires a simultaneous solution for pressure and saturation or molar concentration variables. These variables behave quite differently, with the pressure feeling long-range effects while the saturations vary locally. In this paper we review preconditioned iterative methods used for solving t…
While solving Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) with finite element methods (FEM), serendipity elements allow us to obtain the same order of accuracy as rectangular tensor-product elements with many fewer degrees of freedom (DOFs). To realize the possible computational savings, we develop some additive Schwarz methods (ASM) based on solving local patch problems. Adapting arguments from Pavarino for the tensor-product case, we prove that patch smoothers give conditioning estimates independent of the polynomial degree for a model problem. We also combine this with a low-order global operator…
In this paper, we propose an overlapping additive Schwarz method for total variation minimization based on a dual formulation. The $O(1/n)$-energy convergence of the proposed method is proven, where $n$ is the number of iterations. In addition, we introduce an interesting convergence property called pseudo-linear convergence of the proposed method; the energy of the proposed method decreases as fast as linearly convergent algorithms until it reaches a particular value. It is shown that such the particular value depends on the overlapping width $δ$, and the proposed method becomes as efficient …

We consider the swelling of hydrogels as an example of a chemo-mechanical problem with strong coupling between the mechanical balance relations and the mass diffusion. The problem is cast into a minimization formulation using a time-explicit approach for the dependency of the dissipation potential on the deformation and the swelling volume fraction to obtain symmetric matrices, which are typically better suited for iterative solvers. The MPI-parallel implementation uses the software libraries deal.II, p4est and FROSch (Fast of Robust Overlapping Schwarz). FROSch is part of the Trilinos library…
