We investigate the parallel one-level overlapping Schwarz method for solving finite element discretization of high-frequency Helmholtz equations. The resulting linear systems are large, indefinite, ill-conditioned, and complex-valued. We present a practical variant of the restricted additive Schwarz method with Perfectly Matched Layer transmission conditions (RAS-PML), which was originally analyzed in a theoretical setting in {\tt arXiv:2404.02156}, with some numerical experiments given in {\tt arXiv:2408.16580}. In our algorithm, the width of the overlap and the additional PML layer on each subdomain is allowed to decrease with $\mathcal{O}(k^{-1} \log(k))$, as the frequency $k \rightarrow \infty$, and this is observed to ensure good convergence while avoiding excessive communication. In experiments, the proposed method achieves $\mathcal{O}(k^d)$ parallel scalability under Cartesian domain decomposition and exhibits $\mathcal{O}(k)$ iteration counts and convergence time for $d$-dimensional Helmholtz problems ($d = 2,3$) as $k$ increases. In this preliminary note we restrict to experiments on 2D problems with constant wave speed. Details, analysis and extensions to variable wavespeed and 3D will be given in future work.
In this paper we are concerned with restricted additive Schwarz with local impedance transformation conditions for a family of Helmholtz problems in two dimensions. These problems are discretized by the finite element method with conforming nodal finite elements. We design and analyze a new adaptive coarse space for this kind of restricted additive Schwarz method. This coarse space is spanned by some eigenvalue functions of local generalized eigenvalue problems, which are defined by weighted positive semi-definite bilinear forms on subspaces consisting of local discrete Helmholtz-harmonic func…
In this paper we discuss the convergence of state-of-the-art optimized Schwarz transmission conditions for Helmholtz problems defined on closed domains (i.e. setups which do not exhibit an outgoing wave condition), as commonly encountered when modeling cavities. In particular, the impact of back-propagating waves on the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is analyzed. Afterwards, the performance of the well-established optimized 0th-order, evanescent modes damping, optimized 2nd-order and Padé-localized square-root transmission conditions is discussed.
In this paper we revisit the Restricted Additive Schwarz method for solving discretized Helmholtz problems, using impedance boundary conditions on subdomains (sometimes called ORAS). We present this method in its variational form and show that it can be seen as a finite element discretization of a parallel overlapping domain decomposition method defined at the PDE level. In a fourthcoming paper, the authors have proved certain contractive properties of the error propagation operator for this method at the PDE level, under certain geometrical assumptions. We illustrate computationally that thes…
The Restricted Additive Schwarz method with impedance transmission conditions, also known as the Optimised Restricted Additive Schwarz (ORAS) method, is a simple overlapping one-level parallel domain decomposition method, which has been successfully used as an iterative solver and as a preconditioner for discretized Helmholtz boundary-value problems. In this paper, we give, for the first time, a convergence analysis for ORAS as an iterative solver -- and also as a preconditioner -- for nodal finite element Helmholtz systems of any polynomial order. The analysis starts by showing (for general d…
In this paper we discuss different transmission operators for the non-overlapping Schwarz method which are suited for solving the time-harmonic Helmholtz equation in cavities (i.e. closed domains which do not feature an outgoing wave condition). Such problems are heavily impacted by back-propagating waves which are often neglected when devising optimized transmission operators for the Schwarz method. This work explores new operators taking into account those back-propagating waves and compares them with well-established operators neglecting these contributions. Notably, this paper focuses on t…

Low order, sequential or non-massively parallel finite elements are generaly used for three-dimensional gravity modelling. In this paper, in order to obtain better gravity anomaly solutions in heterogeneous media, we solve the gravimetry problem using massively parallel high order finite elements on hybrid multi-CPU/GPU clusters. Parallel algorithms well suited for such hybrid architectures have to be designed. A new stochastic-based optimization procedure for the optimized Schwarz method is here presented, implemented and tuned to graphical cards processors units. Numerical experiments perfor…

The discretization of surface intrinsic PDEs has challenges that one might not face in the flat space. The closest point method (CPM) is an embedding method that represents surfaces using a function that maps points in the flat space to their closest points on the surface. This mapping brings intrinsic data onto the embedding space, allowing us to numerically approximate PDEs by the standard methods in the tubular neighborhood of the surface. Here, we solve the surface intrinsic positive Helmholtz equation by the CPM paired with finite differences which usually yields a large, sparse, and non-…
Non-overlapping Schwarz methods with generalized Robin transmission conditions were originally introduced by B. Després for time-harmonic wave propagation problems and have largely developed over the past thirty years. The aim of the paper is to provide both a review of the available formulations and methods as well as a consistent theory applicable to more general cases than studied until to date. An abstract variational framework is provided reformulating the original problem by the well-known form involving a scattering operator and an interface exchange operator, and the equivalence betwee…
We consider one-level additive Schwarz preconditioners for a family of Helmholtz problems with absorption and increasing wavenumber $k$. These problems are discretized using the Galerkin method with nodal conforming finite elements of any (fixed) order on meshes with diameter $h = h(k)$, chosen to maintain accuracy as $k$ increases. The action of the preconditioner requires solution of independent (parallel) subproblems (with impedance boundary conditions) on overlapping subdomains of diameter $H$ and overlap $δ\leq H$. The solutions of these subproblems are linked together using prolongation/…
In this work we study the convergence properties of the one-level parallel Schwarz method with Robin transmission conditions applied to the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Helmholtz and Maxwell's equations. One-level methods are not scalable in general. However, it has recently been proven that when impedance transmission conditions are used in the case of the algorithm applied to the equations with absorption, under certain assumptions, scalability can be achieved and no coarse space is required. We show here that this result is also true for the iterative version of the method at the con…
We consider one-level additive Schwarz domain decomposition preconditioners for the Helmholtz equation with variable coefficients (modelling wave propagation in heterogeneous media), subject to boundary conditions that include wave scattering problems. Absorption is included as a parameter in the problem. This problem is discretised using $H^1$-conforming nodal finite elements of fixed local degree $p$ on meshes with diameter $h = h(k)$, chosen so that the error remains bounded with increasing $k$. The action of the one-level preconditioner consists of the parallel solution of problems on subd…
We analyse parallel overlapping Schwarz domain decomposition methods for the Helmholtz equation, where the subdomain problems satisfy first-order absorbing (impedance) transmission conditions, and exchange of information between subdomains is achieved using a partition of unity. We provide a novel analysis of this method at the PDE level (without discretization). First, we formulate the method as a fixed point iteration, and show (in dimensions 1,2,3) that it is well-defined in a tensor product of appropriate local function spaces, each with $L^2$ impedance boundary data. Given this, we then o…
