We construct commutative algebra spectra that represent the operator $K$-theory of $C^*$-algebras, which are algebras over the commutative ring spectra that represent topological $K$-theory. The spectral multiplicative structure introduces a new graded commutative ring structure on the $K$-groups, generalizing the well-known graded ring structure of commutative $C^*$-algebras. This last structure reflects the multiplicative structure of topological $K$-theory via Gelfand duality, Swan's theorem and the fiber tensor product.
We introduce $\mathscr L$-permutative categories, a generalization of bipermutative categories, which are permutative categories equipped with a multiplicative structures induced by coherent actions of the linear isometries operad. The main class of examples of interest are categories whose objects are projection matrices of the unitization of the stabilizations $\widetilde{\mathfrak{KA}}$ of a $C^*$-algebras $\mathfrak A$, and morphisms partial isometries witnessing the Murray-von Neumann relation.
We then construct $E_\infty$-ring spaces out of them by adapting the usual method applied to bipermutative categories. The delooping functor of the recognition principle, the homotopical augmentation ideal and localization at the Bott element then give us our algebra spectra.
We expand on some invariants used for classifying nonselfadjoint operator algebras. Specifically to nonselfadjoint operator algebras which have a conditional expectation onto a commutative diagonal we construct an edge-colored directed graph which can be used as an operator algebra invariant.
State operators on convex effect algebras, in particular effect algebras of unital JC-algebras, JW-algebras and convex sigma-MV algebras are studied and their relations with conditional expectations in algebraic sense as well as in the sense of probability on MV-algebras are shown.
We prove that if a non-selfadjoint dual operator algebra admitting a normal virtual diagonal and an injective von Neumann algebra are close enough for the Kadison-Kastler's metric, then they are similar. The bound explicitly depends on the norm of the normal virtual diagonal. This is inspired from E. Christensen's work on perturbation of operator algebras.
Given a von Neumann algebra $M$ we consider the central extension $E(M)$ of $M.$ We describe class of von Neumann algebras $M$ for which the algebra $E(M)$ coincides with the algebra $S(M)$ -- the algebra of all measurable operators with respect to $M,$ and with $S(M, τ)$ -- the algebra of all $τ$-measurable operators with respect to $M.$
While Jordan algebras are commutative, their non-associativity makes it so that the Jordan product operators do not necessarily commute. When the product operators of two elements commute, the elements are said to operator commute. In some Jordan algebras operator commutation can be badly behaved, for instance having elements $a$ and $b$ operator commute, while $a^2$ and $b$ do not operator commute. In this paper we study JB-algebras, real Jordan algebras which are also Banach spaces in a compatible manner, of which C*-algebras are examples. We show that elements $a$ and $b$ in a JB-algebra op…
We introduce the notion of $Δ$ and $σ\,Δ-$ pairs for operator algebras and characterise $Δ-$ pairs through their categories of left operator modules over these algebras. Furthermore, we introduce the notion of $Δ$-Morita equivalent operator spaces and prove a similar theorem about their algebraic extensions. We prove that $σΔ$-Morita equivalent operator spaces are stably isomorphic and vice versa. Finally, we study unital operator spaces, emphasising their left (resp. right) multiplier algebras, and prove theorems that refer to $Δ$-Morita equivalence of their algebraic extensions.
In this paper we consider we study various classical operator ideals (for instance, the ideals of strictly (co)singular, weakly compact, Dunford-Pettis operators) either on $C^*$-algebras, or preduals of von Neumann algebras.
We answer, by counterexample, several open questions concerning algebras of operators on a Hilbert space. The answers add further weight to the thesis that, for many purposes, such algebras ought to be studied in the framework of operator spaces, as opposed to that of Banach spaces and Banach algebras. In particular, the `nonselfadjoint analogue' of a W*-algebra resides naturally in the category of dual operator spaces, as opposed to dual Banach spaces. We also show that an automatic w*-continuity result in the preceding paper of the authors is sharp.
We show that a Jordan algebra of compact quasinilpotent operators which contains a nonzero trace class operator has a common invariant subspace. As a consequence of this result, we obtain that a Jordan algebra of quasinilpotent Schatten operators is simultaneously triangularizable.
This note presents an analysis of a class of operator algebras constructed as cross-sectional algebras of flat holomorphic matrix bundles over a finitely bordered Riemann surface. These algebras are partly inspired by the bundle shifts of Abrahamse and Douglas. The first objective is to understand the boundary representations of the containing $C^*$-algebra, i.e. Arveson's noncommutative Choquet boundary for each of our operator algebras. The boundary representations of our operator algebras for their containing $C^*$-algebras are calculated, and it is shown that they correspond to evaluations…
We continue our study of the general theory of possibly nonselfadjoint algebras of operators on a Hilbert space, and modules over such algebras, developing a little more technology to connect `nonselfadjoint operator algebra' with the C$^*-$algebraic framework. More particularly, we make use of the universal, or maximal, C$^*-$algebra generated by an operator algebra, and C$^*-$dilations. This technology is quite general, however it was developed to solve some problems arising in the theory of Morita equivalence of operator algebras, and as a result most of the applications given here (and in …
Applying a result of abstract ring theory we get that bijective additive mappings on standard algebras of unbounded operators preserving zero products are multiples of ring isomorphisms. The structure of additive bijective mappings on certain classes of standard algebras of unbounded operators preserving orthogonality in both directions is also investigated. The results are quite similar to those for algebras of bounded operators
In this paper we consider shift operators, self-adjoint, unitary and normal operators on the standard module over a unital C*-algebra A. We define various generalized spectra in A of these operators, give description of such spectra of these operators and investigate their further properties.
It is shown that the *-algebra of all (closed densely defined linear) operators affiliated with a finite type I von Neumann algebra admits a unique center-valued trace, which turns out to be, in a sense, normal. It is also demonstrated that for no other von Neumann algebras similar constructions can be performed.
The paper contains results on the structure of Jordan maps and several kinds of triple maps on standard algebras of unbounded operators in Hilbert spaces. These results are unbounded counterparts to results on algebras of bounded operators obtained by Lu, Molnár and others ([3,4,6 -- 10]).
We prove that two quiver operator algebras can be isometrically isomorphic only if the quivers (=directed graphs) are isomorphic. We also show how the graph can be recovered from certain representations of the algebra.
We exhibit a singly generated, semisimple commutative operator algebra with a contractive approximate identity, such that the spectrum of the generator is a null sequence and zero, but the algebra is not the closed linear span of the idempotents associated with the null sequence and obtained from the analytic functional calculus. Moreover the multiplication on the algebra is neither compact nor weakly compact. Thus we construct a `large' operator algebra of orthogonal idempotents, which may be viewed as a dense subalgebra of c0.
We transcribe a portion of the theory of extensions of C*-algebras to general operator algebras. We also include several new general facts about approximately unital ideals in operator algebras and the C*-algebras which they generate.
We continue the study of r-ideals, l-ideals, and HSA's in operator algebras. Some applications are made to the structure of operator algebras, including Wedderburn type theorems for a class of operator algebras. We also consider the one-sided $M$-ideal structure of certain tensor products of operator algebras.
An operator algebra $\mathcal{A}$ acting on a Hilbert space is said to have the closability property if every densely defined linear transformation commuting with $\mathcal{A}$ is closable. In this paper we study the closability property of the von Neumann algebra consisting of the multiplication operators on $L^2(μ)$, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for a normal operator $N$ such that the von Neumann algebra generated by $N$ has the closability property. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for an operator $T$ of class $C_0$ such that the algebra generated by $T$ in t…
A non-self-adjoint operator algebra is said to be residually finite dimensional (RFD) if it embeds into a product of matrix algebras. We characterize RFD operator algebras in terms of their matrix state space, and moreover show that an operator algebra is RFD if and only if every representation can be approximated by finite dimensional ones in the point weak operator topology. This is a non-self-adjoint version of a theorem of Exel and Loring for $C^*$-algebras. Moreover, we construct an example of an operator algebra for which approximation in the point strong operator topology is not possibl…
We prove that if an amenable operator algebra is nearly contained in a complemented dual operator algebra, then it can be embedded inside this dual operator algebra via a similarity. The proof relies on a B.E. Johnson Theorem on approximately multiplicative maps.
Examples of operator algebras with involution include the operator $*$-algebras occurring in noncommutative differential geometry studied recently by Mesland, Kaad, Lesch, and others, several classical function algebras, triangular matrix algebras, (complexifications) of real operator algebras, and an operator algebraic version of the {\em complex symmetric} operators studied by Garcia, Putinar, Wogen and others. We investigate the general theory of involutive operator algebras, and give many applications.
A left ideal of any C*-algebra is an example of an operator algebra with a right contractive approximate identity (r.c.a.i.). Conversely, we show here and in a `pre-quel' to this paper [B], that operator algebras with r.c.a.i. should be studied in terms of a certain left ideal of a C*-algebra. We study operator algebras and their multiplier algebras from the perspective of `Hamana theory' and using the multiplier algebras introduced by the first author.
A left ideal of any $C^*$-algebra is an example of an operator algebra with a right contractive approximate identity (r.c.a.i.). Indeed left ideals in $C^*$-algebras may be characterized as the class of such operator algebras, which happen also to be triple systems. Conversely, we show here and in a sequel to this paper, that operator algebras with r.c.a.i. should be studied in terms of a certain left ideal of a $C^*$-algebra. We study left ideals from the perspective of `Hamana theory' and using the multiplier algebras introduced by the author. More generally, we develop some general theory f…
We generalize some facts about function algebras to operator algebras, using the `noncommutative Shilov boundary' or $C^*$-envelope first considered by Arveson. In the first part we study and characterize complete isometries between operator algebras. In the second part we introduce and study a notion of logmodularity for operator algebras. We also give a result on conditional expectations. Many miscellaneous applications are given.
Given a pair of smooth transversally intersecting manifolds in some ambient manifold, we construct an operator algebra generated by pseudodifferential operators and the (co)boundary operators associated with the submanifolds. We show that this algebra has 18 types of additive generators. Then we define the symbols of the operators in this algebra and obtain the composition formula.
The matrix normed structure of the unitization of a (non-selfadjoint) operator algebra is determined by that of the original operator algebra. This yields a classification up to completely isometric isomorphism of two-dimensional unital operator algebras. This allows to define invariant distances on the spectrum of commutative operator algebras analogous to the Caratheodory distance for complex manifolds. Moreover, unitizations of two-dimensional operator algebras with zero multiplication provide a rich class of counterexamples. Especially, several badly behaved quotients of function algebras …
Let $M$ be a type I von Neumann algebra with the center $Z,$ and let $LS(M)$ be the algebra of all locally measurable operators affiliated with $M.$ We prove that every $Z$-linear derivation on $LS(M)$ is inner. In particular all $Z$-linear derivations on the algebras of measurable and respectively totally measurable operators are spatial and implemented by elements from $LS(M).$
We show that every free semigroup algebras has a (strongly) unique Banach space predual. We also provide a new simpler proof that a weak*-closed unital operator operator algebra containing a weak* dense subalgebra of compact operators has a unique Banach space predual.
This paper is concerned with derivations in algebras of (unbounded) operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$. Let $\mathcal{% A}$ be one of the algebras of measurable operators, locally measurable operators or, $τ$-measurable operators. We present a complete description of von Neumann algebras $\mathcal{M}$ of type $I$ in terms of their central projections such that every derivation in $\mathcal{A}$ is inner. It is also shown that every derivation in the algebra $LS(\mathcal{M})$ of all locally measurable operators with respect to a properly infinite von Neumann algebra $\…
In this paper we consider A-Fredholm and semi-A-Fredholm operators on Hilbert C*-modules over a W*-algebra A defined in [3],[10]. Using the assumption that A is a W*-algebra (and not an arbitrary C*-algebra), we obtain several results such as generalization of Schechter-Lebow characterization of semi-Fredholm operators and generalization of "punctured neighbourhood" theorem, as well as some other results that generalize their classical counterparts. We consider both adjointable and non adjointable semi-Fredholm operators over W*-algebras. Moreover, we also work with general bounded, adjointabl…
We present recent progress in theory of local conformal nets which is an operator algebraic approach to study chiral conformal field theory. We emphasize representation theoretic aspects and relations to theory of vertex operator algebras which gives a different and algebraic formulation of chiral conformal field theory.
The article is devoted to quasilinear operators in spaces over quaternions and octonions. Spectral theory of bounded and unbounded operators is investigated. Analogs of C^* algebras are defined and studied. Among main results are analogs of the Gelfand-Mazur, Stone, Gelfand-Naimark-Segal, von Neumann, Kaplansky, etc. theorems, but here over the skew field of quaternions and the octonion algebra.
We prove a quantized version of a theorem by M. V. Sheinberg: A uniform algebra equipped with its canonical, i.e. minimal, operator space structure is operator amenable if and only if it is a commutative $C^\ast$-algebra.
Fusion of positive energy representations is defined using Connes' tensor product for bimodules over a von Neumann algebra. Fusion is computed using the analytic theory of primary fields and explicit solutions of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation.
We present some general theorems about operator algebras that are algebras of functions on sets, including theories of local algebras, residually finite dimensional operator algebras and algebras that can be represented as the scalar multipliers of a vector-valued reproducing kernel Hilbert space. We use these to further develop a quantized function theory for various domains that extends and unifies Agler's theory of commuting contractions and the Arveson-Drury-Popescu theory of commuting row contractions. We obtain analogous factorization theorems, prove that the algebras that we obtain are …
We determine the indecomposable characters of several classes of infinite dimensional groups associated with operator algebras, including the unitary groups of arbitrary unital simple AF algebras and II$_1$ factors.
This paper is a continuation of the program started by Ruan in 2003, of developing real operator space theory. In particular, we develop the theory of real operator algebras. We also show among other things that the injective envelope, C*-envelope and non-commutative Shilov boundary exist for a real operator space. We develop real one-sided M-ideal theory and characterize one-sided M-ideals in real C*-algebras and real operator algebras with contractive approximate identity.
In a previous paper we showed how the main theorems characterizing operator algebras and operator modules, fit neatly into the framework of the `noncommutative Shilov boundary', and more particularly via the left multiplier operator algebra of an operator space. As well as giving new characterization theorems, the approach of that paper allowed many of the hypotheses of the earlier theorems to be eliminated. Recent progress of the author with Effros and Zarikian now enables weak*-versions of these characterization theorems. For example, we prove a result analogous to Sakai's famous characteriz…
An O-operator is a relative version of a Rota-Baxter operator and, in the Lie algebra context, is originated from the operator form of the classical Yang-Baxter equation. We generalize the well-known construction of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras from Rota-Baxter algebras to a construction from O-operators. We then show that this construction from O-operators gives all dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras. Furthermore there are bijections between certain equivalence classes of invertible O-operators and certain equivalence classes of dendriform dialgebras and trialgebras.
We survey the most recent results on extension of isometries between special subsets of the unit spheres of C$^*$-algebras, von Neumann algebras, trace class operators, preduals of von Neumann algebras, and $p$-Schatten-von Neumann spaces, with special interest on Tingley's problem.
This paper is a survey of our recent work on operator algebras associated to dynamical systems that lead to classification results for the systems in terms of algebraic invariants of the operator algebras.
All operator algebras have (not necessarily irreducible) boundary representations. A unital operator algebra has enough such boundary representations to generate its C*-envelope.
The most recent wave of applications of logic to operator algebras is a young and rapidly developing field. This is a snapshot of the current state of the art.
Certain infinite families of operator identities related to powers of positive root generators of (super) Lie algebras of first-order differential operators and $q$-deformed algebras of first-order finite-difference operators are presented.
This paper is the first of a series giving a self-contained way from the Neveu-Schwarz algebra to a new series of irreducible subfactors. Here we present an elementary, progressive and self-contained approch to vertex operator superalgebra. We then build such a structure from the loop algebra $Lg$ of any simple finite dimensional Lie algebra $g$. The Neveu-Schwarz algebra $Vir_{1/2}$ emerges naturally on. As application, we obtain a unitary action of $Vir_{1/2}$ on the unitary discrete series of $Lg$.
We carry out a careful study of operator algebras associated with Delone dynamical systems. A von Neumann algebra is defined using noncommutative integration theory. Features of these algebras and the operators they contain are discussed. We restrict our attention to a certain subalgebra to discuss a Shubin trace formula.
We examine when two maximal abelian algebras in the truncated Toeplitz operators are spatially isomorphic. This builds upon recent work of N. Sedlock, who obtained a complete description of the maximal algebras of truncated Toeplitz operators.
We consider commutative C* -algebras of Toeplitz operators in the weighted Bergman space on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{\mathbf{n}}$. For the algebras of elliptic type we find a new representation, namely as the algebra of operators which are functions of certain collections of commuting unbounded self-adjoint operators in the Bergman space.
