Targeted to space-time tracking applications in High Energy Physics experiments, the system aims to achieve a time resolution of 30 ps or better at a maximum event rate of 3 MHz per channel with a Data Driven interface. Power consumption can be programmed to range between $1.2W/cm^{2}$ and $2.6W/cm^{2}$. The presented results include a description of the ASIC operation and a first characterization of its performance in terms of time resolution.

We report on the development of a front-end ASIC for silicon-strip detectors of the J-PARC Muon g-2/EDM experiment. This experiment aims to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment precisely to explore new physics beyond the Standard Model. Since the time and momentum of positrons from muon decay are key information in the experiment, a fast response with high granularity is demanded to silicon-strip detectors as the positron tracker. The readout ASIC is thus required to tolerate a high hit rate of 1.4 MHz per strip and to have deep memory for the period of 40 us w…
The water Cherenkov detector array (WCDA) is one of the key detectors in the large high altitude air shower observatory (LHAASO), which is proposed for very high gamma ray source survey. In WCDA, there are more than 3000 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) scattered under water in an area of 80000 m2. As for the WCDA readout electronics, both high precision time and charge measurement is required over a large dynamic range from 1 photon electron (P.E.) to 4000 P.E. To reduce the electronics complexity and improve the system reliability, a readout scheme based on application specific integrated circui…

Time and charge measurements over a large dynamic range from 1 Photo Electron (P.E.) to 4000 P.E. are required for the Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA), which is one of the key components in the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). To simplify the circuit structure of the readout electronics, a front end ASIC was designed. Based on the charge-to-time conversion method, the output pulse width of the ASIC corresponds to the input signal charge information while time information of the input signal is picked off through a discriminator, and thus the time and charge informatio…

Application Specific Integrated Circuits, ASICs, similar to those envisaged for the readout electronics of the central calorimeters of detectors for a future lepton collider have been exposed to high-energy electromagnetic showers. A salient feature of these calorimeters is that the readout electronics will be embedded into the calorimeter layers. In this article it is shown that interactions of shower particles in the volume of the readout electronics do not alter the noise pattern of the ASICs. No signal at or above the MIP level has been observed during the exposure. The upper limit at the …

A novel time calibration method for waveform sampling application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) based on switched capacitor arrays (SCAs) is proposed in this paper. Precision timing extraction using SCA ASICs has been proved to be a promising technique in many high energy physics experiments. However, such ASICs suffer from irregular sampling intervals caused by process variations. Therefore, careful calibration is required to improve the time resolution of such systems. We evaluated the limitation of a popular method using the proportionality between voltage amplitude and sampling inte…

Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) are used in space-borne instruments for signal processing and detector readout. The electrical interface of these ASICs to frontend printed circuit boards (PCBs) is commonly accomplished with wire bonds. Through Silicon Via (TSV) technology has been proposed as an alternative interconnect technique that will reduce assembly complexity of ASIC packaging by replacing wire bonding with flip-chip bonding. TSV technology is advantageous in large detector arrays where TSVs enable close detector tiling on all sides. Wafer-level probe card testing of TS…

Despite advances in the programmable logic capabilities of modern trigger systems, a significant bottleneck remains in the amount of data to be transported from the detector to off-detector logic where trigger decisions are made. We demonstrate that a neural network autoencoder model can be implemented in a radiation tolerant ASIC to perform lossy data compression alleviating the data transmission problem while preserving critical information of the detector energy profile. For our application, we consider the high-granularity calorimeter from the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collid…
We report on the recent development of a versatile analog front-end compatible with a negative-ion $μ$-TPC for a directional dark matter search as well as a dual-phase, next-generation $\mathcal{O}$(10~kt) liquid argon TPC to study neutrino oscillations, nucleon decay, and astrophysical neutrinos. Although the operating conditions for negative-ion and liquid argon TPCs are quite different (room temperature \textit{vs.} $\sim$88~K operation, respectively), the readout electronics requirements are similar. Both require a wide-dynamic range up to 1600 fC, and less than 2000--5000 e$^-$ noise for …
A dedicated front-end electronics has been developed for the trigger chambers of the ALICE muon spectrometer which will work at the future LHC at CERN. These trigger chambers are based on RPCs (Resistive Plate Chambers) working in streamer mode. The number of electronics channels (about 21000) and the fact that RPC pulsed signals have specific characteristics have led to design a 8 channels front-end ASIC using a new discrimination technique. The principle of the ASIC is described and the radiation hardness is discussed. Special emphasis is put on production characteristics of about 4000 chips…
Operating HADES at the future FAIR SIS-100 accelerator challenges the rate capability of DAQ and electronics. A new, more robust version of front-end electronics needs to be built for the HADES drift chamber system. Due to the unavailability of the previously used ASD-8 analog read-out ASIC, PASTTREC (PANDA straw tube read-out ASIC) was tested as an ASD-8 replacement in different scenarios including a beam test. PASTTREC falls 20% short of the ASD-8 time precision but performs better w.r.t. signal charge measurements and overall operation stability. The measured time precision as a function of…
