Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus 2 over a number field $k$ with a rational point. We prove that the index and exponent coincide for elements in the 2-torsion of $\Sha(Br(C))$.
In the appendix, an isomorphism of the moduli space of rank 2 stable vector bundles with odd determinant on a smooth projective hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus $g$ with a rational point over any field of characteristic not two with the Grassmannian of $(g-1)$-dimensional linear subspaces in the base locus of a certain pencil of quadrics is established, making a result of (\cite{De-Ra}) rational. We establish a twisted version of this isomorphism and we derive as a consequence a weak Hasse principle for the smooth intersection $X$ of two quadrics in ${\mathbb P}^5$ over a number field: if $X$ contains a line locally, then $X$ has a $k$-rational point.
Information Theoretic analysis of the periods of a hyperelliptic curve provides more information about the well--known but abstract relationship between the branch points and the periods. Here one constructs a canonical homology basis for a hyperelliptic curve that shows that its periods must satisfy certain constraints and defines an open set in the Siegel upper half space that cannot contain any period matrices of hyperelliptic curves.
To every hyperelliptic curve one can assign the periods of the integrals over the holomorphic and the meromorphic differentials. By comparing two representations of the so-called projective connection it is possible to reexpress the latter periods by the first. This leads to expressions including only the curve's parameters $λ_j$ and modular forms. By a change of basis of the meromorphic differentials one can further simplify this expression. We discuss the advantages of these explicitly given bases, which we call Baker and Klein basis, respectively.
The Horikawa index and the local signature are introduced for relatively minimal fibered surfaces whose general fiber is a non-hyperelliptic curve of genus $4$ with unique trigonal structure.
A geometric algorithm is introduced for finding a symplectic basis of the first integral homology group of a compact Riemann surface, which is a $p$-cyclic covering of ${\mathbb C} P^1$ branched over 3 points. The algorithm yields a previously unknown symplectic basis of the hyperelliptic curve defined by the affine equation $w^2=z^{2g+1}-1$ for genus $g\geq 2$. We then explicitly obtain the period matrix of this curve, its entries being elements of the $(2g+1)$-st cyclotomic field. In the proof, the details of our algorithm play no significant role.
Rosenhain's famous formula expresses the periods of first kind integrals of genus two hyperelliptic curves in terms of $θ$-constants. In this paper we generalize the Rosenhain formula to higher genera hyperelliptic curves by means of the second Thomae formula for derivated non-singular $θ$-constants.
In this paper, we calculate period matrices of algebraic curves defined by $$w^2=z(z^2-1)(z^2-a_1^2)(z^2-a_2^2)\cdots (z^2-a_{g-1}^2)$$ for any $g\geq 2$ and $a_1, a_2, \dots, a_{g-1}\in \mathbb{R}$ with $1<a_1<a_2<\cdots <a_{g-1}$. We construct these algebraic curves from Euclidean polygons. A symplectic basis of these curves are given from the polygons.
Given a sextic CM field $K$, we give an explicit method for finding all genus 3 hyperelliptic curves defined over $\mathbb{C}$ whose Jacobians are simple and have complex multiplication by the maximal order of this field, via an approximation of their Rosenhain invariants. Building on the work of Weng, we give an algorithm which works in complete generality, for any CM sextic field $K$, and computes minimal polynomials of the Rosenhain invariants for any period matrix of the Jacobian. This algorithm can be used to generate genus 3 hyperelliptic curves over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ with a …
In this article we consider a certain distinguished set $U(Ω,m) \subseteq \{1,2,\ldots,2g+1,\infty\}$ that can be attached to a marked hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ equipped with a small period matrix $Ω$ for its polarized Jacobian. We show that as $Ω$ and the marking $m$ vary, this set ranges over all possibilities prescribed by an argument of Poor.
Let $\{\infty^+, \infty^-\}$ be the two points above $\infty$ on the real hyperelliptic curve $H: y^2 = (x^2 - 1) \prod_{i=1}^{2g} (x - a_i)$. We show that the divisor $([\infty^+] - [\infty^-])$ is torsion in $\operatorname{Jac} J$ for a dense set of $(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_{2g}) \in (-1, 1)^{2g}$. In fact, we prove by degeneration to a nodal $\mathbb{P}^1$ that an associated period map has derivative generically of full rank.
Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$ and ${\cal H}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be, respectively, the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$ smooth curves and its closed substack consisting of hyperelliptic curves. Their topological fundamental groups can be identified, respectively, with $Γ_{g,n}$ and $H_{g,n}$, the so called Teichm{ü}ller modular group and hyperelliptic modular group. A choice of base point on ${\cal H}_{g,n}$ defines a monomorphism $H_{g,n}\hookrightarrowΓ_{g,n}$. Let $S_{g,n}$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed. The Teichmüller group $Γ_{g,n}$ is the group of iso…
We consider multi-variable sigma function of a genus $g$ hyperelliptic curve as a function of two group of variables -jacobian variables and parameters of the curve. In the theta-functional representation of sigma-function, the second group arises as periods of first and second kind differentials of the curve. We develop representation of periods in terms of theta-constants. For the first kind periods, generalizations of Rosenhain type formulae are obtained, whilst for the second kind periods theta-constant expressions arepresented which are explicitly related to the fixed co-homology basis. We…
Newtonian dynamics in the plane corresponding to straight and cyclic motions on the hyperelliptic curve $μ^2=ν^n-1, n\in{\Bbb Z}$: ergodicity, isochrony, periodicity and fractals
In this work we give an explicit solution to the problem of differentiation of hyperelliptic functions in genus $4$ case. It is a genus $4$ analogue of the classical result of F. G. Frobenius and L. Stickelberger [F. G. Frobenius, L. Stickelberger, "Uber die Differentiation der elliptischen Functionen nach den Perioden und Invarianten", J. Reine Angew. Math., 92 (1882), 311-337] in the case of elliptic functions. An explicit solution in the genus $2$ case was given in [V. M. Buchstaber, "Polynomial dynamical systems and Korteweg-de Vries equation", Proc. Steklov Inst. Math., 294 (2016), 176-20…
For elliptic curves, expressions for the periods of elliptic integrals of the second kind in terms of theta-constants, have been known since the middle of the 19th century. In this paper we consider the problem of generalizing these results to curves of higher genera, in particular to a special class of algebraic curves, the so-called $(n,s)$-curves. It is shown that the representations required can be obtained by the comparison of two equivalent expressions for the projective connection, one due to Fay-Wirtinger and the other from Klein-Weierstrass. As a principle example, we consider the cas…
We consider certain degenerations of trigonal curves and hyperelliptic curves, which we call one step degeneration. We compute the limits of corresponding quasi-periodic solutions using the Sato Grassmannian. The mixing of solitons and quasi-periodic solutions is clearly visible in the obtained solutions.
Given a real elliptic curve $E$ with non-empty real part and $[D]\in \mbox{Pic}^2 E$ its $g_2^1$, we study the real inflection points of distinguished subseries of the complete real linear series $|\mathcal{L}_\mathbb{R}(kD)|$ for $k\geq 3$. We define {\it key polynomials} whose roots index the ($x$-coordinates of) inflection points of the linear series, away from the points where $E$ ramifies over $\mathbb{P}^1$. These fit into a recursive hierarchy, in the same way that division polynomials index torsion points. Our study is motivated by, and complements, an analysis of how inflectionary loc…
We solve the period-index problem for the Brauer group of a general complex torus of dimension at least three, giving an explicit formula for the index of each Brauer class. As a consequence, the complex-analytic version of the period-index conjecture is false for infinitely many Brauer classes on a general complex torus of dimension at least three.
As for any symmetric space the tangent space to Siegel upper-half space is endowed with an operation coming from the Lie bracket on the Lie algebra. We consider the pull-back of this operation to the moduli space of curves via the Torelli map. We characterize it in terms of the geometry of the curve, using the Bergman kernel form associated to the curve. It is known that the second fundamental form of the Torelli map outside the hyperelliptic locus can be seen as the multiplication by a certain meromorphic form. Our second result says that the Bergman kernel form is the harmonic representative…
In this paper, we will consider the period index problems of elliptic curves and introduce a value called generic index which is closed related to the essential dimension of Picard stacks. In particular, we will use examples to see that usually the period and generic index are different. Our construction is different with Cassel's example.
We study the Hodge theory of twisted derived categories and its relation to the period-index problem. Our main contribution is the development of a theory of twisted Mukai structures for topologically trivial Brauer classes on arbitrary smooth proper varieties and in families. As applications, we construct Hodge classes whose algebraicity would imply period-index bounds; construct new counterexamples to the integral Hodge conjecture on Severi-Brauer varieties; and prove the integral Hodge conjecture for derived categories of Deligne-Mumford surfaces.
We consider regularly stable parabolic symplectic and orthogonal bundles over an irreducible smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The morphism from the moduli stack of such bundles to its coarse moduli space is a $μ_2$-gerbe. We study the period and index of this gerbe, and solve the corresponding period-index problem.
The standard period-index conjecture for the Brauer group of a field of transcendence degree 2 over a $p$-adic field predicts that the index divides the cube of the period. Using Gabber's theory of prime-to-$\ell$ alterations and the deformation theory of twisted sheaves, we prove that the index divides the fourth power of the period for every Brauer class whose period is prime to $6p$, giving the first uniform period-index bounds over such fields.
Conditional on the Lefschetz standard conjecture in degree 2, we prove that the index of a Brauer class on a smooth projective variety divides a fixed power of its period, uniformly in smooth families. In the other direction, we reinterpret in more classical terms recent work of Hotchkiss which gives Hodge-theoretic lower bounds on the index of Brauer classes. We also prove versions of our results over arbitrary algebraically closed base fields, and as an application construct qualitatively new counterexamples to the integral Tate conjecture.
