We present a computational approach to general hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces in Weierstrass normal form. The surface is either given by a list of the branch points, the coefficients of the defining polynomial or a system of cuts for the curve. A canonical basis of the homology is introduced algorithmically for this curve. The periods of the holomorphic differentials and the Abel map are computed with the Clenshaw-Curtis method in order to achieve spectral accuracy. The code can handle almost degenerate Riemann surfaces. This work generalizes previous work on real hyperelliptic surfaces with prescribed cuts to arbitrary hyperelliptic surfaces. As an example, solutions to the sine-Gordon equation in terms of multi-dimensional theta functions are studied, also in the solitonic limit of these solutions.
In the present paper we solve the following different but interrelated problems: (a) the moment problem on Riemann surfaces, (b) the vanishing problem of polynomial Abelian integrals of dimension zero on the projective plane, (c) the vanishing problem of polynomial hyperelliptic Abelian integrals.
In this paper we prove new explicit formulas for Faltings' $δ$-invariant of an arbitrary hyperelliptic Riemann surface. This has several applications: For example we obtain an explicit lower bound for $δ$ depending only on the genus, and we deduce new explicit bounds for the Arakelov self-intersection number $ω^2$ associated to hyperelliptic curves over number fields. Furthermore, we obtain an improved version of Szpiro's small points conjecture for hyperelliptic curves of genus at least $3$. Our method allows us in addition to establish a generalization of Rosenhain's formula on $θ$-derivativ…
For an (imaginary) hyperelliptic curve $\mathcal{H}$ of genus $g$, we determine a basis of the Riemann-Roch space $\mathcal{L}(D)$, where $D$ is a divisor with positive degree $n$, linearly equivalent to $P_1+\cdots+ P_j+(n-j)Ω$, with $0 \le j \le g$, where $Ω$ is a Weierstrass point, taken as the point at infinity. As an application, we determine a generator matrix of a Goppa code for $j=g=3$ and $n=4.$
In this paper, we calculate period matrices of algebraic curves defined by $$w^2=z(z^2-1)(z^2-a_1^2)(z^2-a_2^2)\cdots (z^2-a_{g-1}^2)$$ for any $g\geq 2$ and $a_1, a_2, \dots, a_{g-1}\in \mathbb{R}$ with $1<a_1<a_2<\cdots <a_{g-1}$. We construct these algebraic curves from Euclidean polygons. A symplectic basis of these curves are given from the polygons.
We study harmonic morphisms of graphs as a natural discrete analogue of holomorphic maps between Riemann surfaces. We formulate a graph-theoretic analogue of the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula, study the functorial maps on Jacobians and harmonic 1-forms induced by a harmonic morphism, and present a discrete analogue of the canonical map from a Riemann surface to projective space. We also discuss several equivalent formulations of the notion of a hyperelliptic graph, all motivated by the classical theory of Riemann surfaces. As an application of our results, we show that for a 2-edge-connect…
The behavior near the boundary in the Deligne-Mumford compactification of many functions on the moduli space of pointed Riemann surfaces can be conveniently expressed using the notion of "point-like limit" that we adopt from the string theory literature. In this note we study a function on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces that has been introduced by N. Kawazumi and S. Zhang, independently. We show that the point-like limit of the Zhang-Kawazumi invariant in a family of hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces in the direction of any hyperelliptic stable curve exists, and is given by evaluating a com…
This is the second in a series of papers on the numerical treatment of hyperelliptic theta-functions with spectral methods. A code for the numerical evaluation of solutions to the Ernst equation on hyperelliptic surfaces of genus 2 is extended to arbitrary genus and general position of the branch points. The use of spectral approximations allows for an efficient calculation of all characteristic quantities of the Riemann surface with high precision even in almost degenerate situations as in the solitonic limit where the branch points coincide pairwise. As an example we consider hyperelliptic s…
A code for the numerical evaluation of hyperelliptic theta-functions is presented. Characteristic quantities of the underlying Riemann surface such as its periods are determined with the help of spectral methods. The code is optimized for solutions of the Ernst equation where the branch points of the Riemann surface are parameterized by the physical coordinates. An exploration of the whole parameter space of the solution is thus only possible with an efficient code. The use of spectral approximations allows for an efficient calculation of all quantities in the solution with high precision. The…
Using an explicit version of the Mumford isomorphism on the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves we derive a closed formula for the Arakelov-Green function of a hyperelliptic Riemann surface evaluated at its Weierstrass points.
We discuss Weber's formula which gives the quotient of two Thetanullwerte for a plane smooth quartic in terms of the bitangents. In particular, we show how it can easily be derived from the Riemann-Jacobi formula.
A group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{2}^{n}$, $n \geq 3$, of conformal automorphisms of a closed Riemann surface $S$ such that $S/H$ has genus zero and exactly $(n+1)$ cone points is called a generalized Humbert group of type $n$, in which case, $S$ is called a generalized Humbert curve of type $n$. It is known that a generalized Humbert curve $S$ of type $n \geq 4$ is non-hyperelliptic and that it admits a unique generalized Humbert group $H$ of type $n$. We describe those subgroups $K$ of $H$, acting freely on $S$, such that $S/K$ is hyperelliptic.
We introduce a new approach of computing the automorphism group and the field of moduli of points $\p=[C]$ in the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves $\H_g$. Further, we show that for every moduli point $\p \in \H_g(L)$ such that the reduced automorphism group of $\p$ has at least two involutions, there exists a representative $C$ of the isomorphism class $\p$ which is defined over $L$.
Let $\mathcal H_g$ be the moduli space of genus $g$ hyperelliptic curves. In this note, we study the locus $\mathcal L$ in $\mathcal H_g$ of curves admitting a $G$-action of given ramification type $σ$ and inclusions between such loci. For each genus we determine the list of all possible groups, the inclusions among the loci, and the corresponding equations of the generic curve in $\mathcal L$. The proof of the results is based solely on representations of finite subgroups of $PGL_2 (\mathbb C)$ and the Riemann-Hurwitz formula.
We show that there exists a surjection from the set of effective divisors of degree $g$ on a tropical curve of genus $g$ to its Jacobian by using a tropical version of the Riemann-Roch theorem. We then show that the restriction of the surjection is reduced to the bijection on an appropriate subset of the set of effective divisors of degree $g$ on the curve. Thus the subset of effective divisors has the additive group structure induced from the Jacobian. We finally realize the addition in Jacobian of a tropical hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ via the intersection with a tropical curve of degre…
An exceptional point in the moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces is a unique surface class whose full automorphism group acts with a triangular signature. A surface admitting a conformal involution with quotient an elliptic curve is called elliptic-hyperelliptic; one admitting an anticonformal involution is called symmetric. In this paper, we determine, up to topological conjugacy, the full group of conformal and anticonformal automorphisms of a symmetric exceptional point in the elliptic-hyperelliptic locus. We determine the number of ovals of any symmetry of such a surface. We show that …
A geometric algorithm is introduced for finding a symplectic basis of the first integral homology group of a compact Riemann surface, which is a $p$-cyclic covering of ${\mathbb C} P^1$ branched over 3 points. The algorithm yields a previously unknown symplectic basis of the hyperelliptic curve defined by the affine equation $w^2=z^{2g+1}-1$ for genus $g\geq 2$. We then explicitly obtain the period matrix of this curve, its entries being elements of the $(2g+1)$-st cyclotomic field. In the proof, the details of our algorithm play no significant role.
Let $(G, ω)$ be a hyperelliptic vertex-weighted graph of genus $g \geq 2$. We give a characterization of $(G, ω)$ for which there exists a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus $g$ over a complete discrete valuation field with reduction graph $(G, ω)$ such that the ranks of any divisors are preserved under specialization. We explain, for a given vertex-weighted graph $(G, ω)$ in general, how the existence of such $X$ relates the Riemann--Roch formulae for $X$ and $(G, ω)$, and also how the existence of such $X$ is related to a conjecture of Caporaso.
$N$-point functions of holomorphic fields in conformal field theories can be calculated by methods from algebraic geometry. We establish explicit formulas for the 2-point function of the Virasoro field on hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Virasoro $N$-point functions for higher $N$ are obtained inductively, and we show that they have a nice graph representation. We discuss the 3-point function with application to the $(2,5)$ minimal model.
We investigate the action of the automorphism group of a closed Riemann surface on its set of theta characteristics (or spin structures). We give criteria for when an automorphism fixes all spin structures, or when it fixes just one. The case of hyperelliptic curves and of the Klein quartic are discussed in detail.
We study the fluctuations in the distribution of zeros of zeta functions of a family of hyperelliptic curves defined over a fixed finite field, in the limit of large genus. According to the Riemann Hypothesis for curves, the zeros all lie on a circle. Their angles are uniformly distributed, so for a curve of genus g a fixed interval I will contain 2g|I| angles as the genus grows. We show that for the variance of number of angles in I is asymptotically a constant multiple of log(2g|I|) and prove a central limit theorem: The normalized fluctuations are Gaussian. These results continue to hold fo…
Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. The Abel-Jacobi map $φ: {\rm Sym}^d(X) \rightarrow {\rm Pic}^d(X)$ is an embedding if $d$ is less than the gonality of $X$. We investigate the curvature of the pull-back, by $φ$, of the flat metric on ${\rm Pic}^d(X)$. In particular, we show that when $d=1$, the curvature is strictly negative everywhere if $X$ is not hyperelliptic, and when $X$ is hyperelliptic, the curvature is nonpositive with vanishing exactly on the points of $X$ fixed by the hyperelliptic involution.
In this note we prove the genus 3 case of a conjecture of G. Farkas and A. Verra on the limit of the Scorza correspondence for curves with a theta-null. Specifically, we show that the limit of the Scorza correspondence for a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve C is the union of the curve ${x,σ(x))$ (where $σ$ is the hyperelliptic involution), and twice the diagonal. Our proof uses the geometry of the subsystem Γ_{00} of the linear system 2Θ, and Riemann identities for theta constants.
A purely numerical approach to compact Riemann surfaces starting from plane algebraic curves is presented. The critical points of the algebraic curve are computed via a two-dimensional Newton iteration. The starting values for this iteration are obtained from the resultants with respect to both coordinates of the algebraic curve and a suitable pairing of their zeros. A set of generators of the fundamental group for the complement of these critical points in the complex plane is constructed from circles around these points and connecting lines obtained from a minimal spanning tree. The monodrom…
Let ${\cal M}_{g,n}$ and ${\cal H}_{g,n}$, for $2g-2+n>0$, be, respectively, the moduli stack of $n$-pointed, genus $g$ smooth curves and its closed substack consisting of hyperelliptic curves. Their topological fundamental groups can be identified, respectively, with $Γ_{g,n}$ and $H_{g,n}$, the so called Teichm{ü}ller modular group and hyperelliptic modular group. A choice of base point on ${\cal H}_{g,n}$ defines a monomorphism $H_{g,n}\hookrightarrowΓ_{g,n}$. Let $S_{g,n}$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ with $n$ points removed. The Teichmüller group $Γ_{g,n}$ is the group of iso…
Considering non-constant holomorphic maps $β_{i}:S_{i}\to S_{0}$, $i\in\{1,2\}$, between non-compact Riemann surfaces for which it is associated its fiber product $S_{1}\times_{(β_{1},β_{2})}S_{2}$. With this setting, in this paper we relate the ends space of such fiber product to the ends space of its normal fiber product. Moreover, we provide conditions on the maps $β_{1}$ and $β_{2}$ to guarantee connectednes on the fiber product. From these conditions, we link the ends space of fiber product with the topological type of the Riemann surfaces $S_{1}$ and $S_{2}$. We also study the fiber prod…
In arithmetic and algebraic geometry, superspecial (s.sp.\ for short) curves are one of the most important objects to be studied, with applications to cryptography and coding theory. If $g \geq 4$, it is not even known whether there exists such a curve of genus $g$ in general characteristic $p > 0$, and in the case of $g=4$, several computational approaches to search for those curves have been proposed. In the genus-$4$ hyperelliptic case, Kudo-Harashita proposed a generic algorithm to enumerate all s.sp.\ curves, and recently Ohashi-Kudo-Harashita presented an algorithm specific to the case w…
Physically meaningful periodic solutions to certain integrable partial differential equations are given in terms of multi-dimensional theta functions associated to real Riemann surfaces. Typical analytical problems in the numerical evaluation of these solutions are studied. In the case of hyperelliptic surfaces efficient algorithms exist even for almost degenerate surfaces. This allows the numerical study of solitonic limits. For general real Riemann surfaces, the choice of a homology basis adapted to the anti-holomorphic involution is important for a convenient formulation of the solutions an…
We study the complexification of the one-dimensional Newtonian particle in a monomial potential. We discuss two classes of motions on the associated Riemann surface: the rectilinear and the cyclic motions, corresponding to two different classes of real and autonomous Newtonian dynamics in the plane. The rectilinear motion has been studied in a number of papers, while the cyclic motion is much less understood. For small data, the cyclic time trajectories lead to isochronous dynamics. For bigger data the situation is quite complicated; computer experiments show that, for sufficiently small degre…
In this paper we study the topology of the spaces Hol(M,P{n},k) of (basepoint preserving) holomorphic maps of a given degree k from a Riemann surface M of genus g>0 into the n-th complex projective space P{n}, n>0. Using symmetric products of the surface as well as the geometry of the associated Abel-Jacobi maps, we construct an explicit topological compactification of Hol(M,P{n},k) which allow us to construct spectral sequences with known E_1-terms that can be used to determine the homology groups of Hol(M,P{n},k). Complete calculations are given for the elliptic case (g=1). Complete rational…
Fix a finite field. A hyperelliptic curve determines a measure on the discrete space of rank two bundles on the projective line: the mass of a given vector bundle is the number of line bundles whose pushforward it is. In a sequence of hyperelliptic curves whose genera tend to infinity, these measures tend to the natural measure on the space of rank two bundles. This is a function field analogue of Duke's theorem on the equidistribution of Heegner points, and can be proven similarly: it follows from a manipulation of zeta functions, plus the Riemann Hypothesis for curves. Likewise, a sequence o…
We study the one parameter family of genus 2 Riemann surfaces defined by the orbit of the L-shaped translation surface tiled by three squares under the Teichmüller geodesic flow. These surfaces are real algebraic curves with three real components. We are interested in describing these surfaces by their period matrices. We show that the only Riemann surface in that family admitting a non-hyperelliptic automorphism comes from the 3-square-tiled translation surface itself. This makes the computation of an exact expression for period matrices of other Riemann surfaces in that family by the classic…
In recent years there has been an interest in constructing examples of closed Riemann surfaces whose jacobian varieties are isogenous to a product of many elliptic factors and some other jacobian varieties. The first ones, provided by Ekedahl and Serre, are examples for which the isogenous decomposition has all factors being elliptic curves. It is well known that given two elliptic curves $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$, there is a closed Riemann surface $X$ of genus two, with equations in terms of the elliptic curves, and whose jacobian variety $JX$ is isogenous to $E_{1} \times E_{2}$. In this paper, gi…
Topologically, a compact Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$ is a $g$-holed torus (a sphere with $g$ handles). This paper is an introduction to the theory of compact Riemann surfaces and algebraic curves. It presents the basic ideas and properties as an expository essay, explores some of their numerous consequences and gives a concise account of the elementary aspects of different viewpoints in curve theory. We discuss and prove most intuitively some geometric-topological aspects of the algebraic functions and the associated Riemann surfaces. Abelian and normalized differentials, Riemann's biline…
The Kawazumi-Zhang invariant $φ$ for compact genus-two Riemann surfaces was recently shown to be a eigenmode of the Laplacian on the Siegel upper half-plane, away from the separating degeneration divisor. Using this fact and the known behavior of $φ$ in the non-separating degeneration limit, it is shown that $φ$ is equal to the Theta lift of the unique (up to normalization) weak Jacobi form of weight $-2$. This identification provides the complete Fourier-Jacobi expansion of $φ$ near the non-separating node, gives full control on the asymptotics of $φ$ in the various degeneration limits, and p…
A closed Riemann surface $S$ is called a generalized Fermat curve of type $(p,n)$, where $p,n \geq 2$ are integers, if it admits a group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{n}$ of conformal automorphisms so that $S/H$ is an orbifold of genus zero with exactly $n+1$ cone points, each one of order $p$. It is known that $S$ is a fiber product of $(n-1)$ classical Fermat curves of degree $p$ and, for $(p-1)(n-1)>2$, that it is a non-hyperelliptic Riemann surface. In this paper, assuming $p$ to be a prime integer, we provide a decomposition, up to isogeny, of the Jacobian variety $JS$ as a product of Jacobia…
We prove the existence of canonical scrolls; that is, scrolls playing the role of canonical curves. First of all, they provide the geometrical version of Riemann Roch Teorem: any special scroll is the projection of a canonical scroll and they allow to understand the classification of special scrolls in P3. Canonical scrolls correspond to the projective model of canonical geometrically ruled surfaces over a smooth curve. We also prove that the generic canonical scroll is projectively normal except in the hyperelliptic case and for very particular cases in the nonhyperelliptic situation.
The computation of the field of moduli of a closed Riemann surface seems to be a very difficult problem and even more difficult is to determine if the field of moduli is a field of definition. In this paper we consider the family of closed Riemann surfaces of genus five admitting a group of conformal automorphisms isomorphic to ${\mathbb Z}_{2}^{4}$. These surfaces are non-hyperelliptic ones and turn out to be the highest branched abelian covers of the orbifolds of genus zero and five cone points of order two. We compute the field of moduli of these surfaces and we prove that they are fields o…
We study the behaviors of the relative Bergman kernel metrics on holomorphic families of degenerating hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces and their Jacobian varieties. Near a node or cusp, we obtain precise asymptotic formulas with explicit coefficients. In general the Bergman kernels on a given cuspidal family do not always converge to that on the regular part of the limiting surface, which is different from the nodal case. It turns out that information on both the singularity and complex structure contributes to various asymptotic behaviors of the Bergman kernel. Our method involves the classical…
