For an (imaginary) hyperelliptic curve $\mathcal{H}$ of genus $g$, we determine a basis of the Riemann-Roch space $\mathcal{L}(D)$, where $D$ is a divisor with positive degree $n$, linearly equivalent to $P_1+\cdots+ P_j+(n-j)Ω$, with $0 \le j \le g$, where $Ω$ is a Weierstrass point, taken as the point at infinity. As an application, we determine a generator matrix of a Goppa code for $j=g=3$ and $n=4.$
We present an efficient endomorphism for the Jacobian of a curve $C$ of genus 2 (hyperelliptic) for divisors having a Non disjoint support. This extends the work of Costello and Lauter in [12] who calculated explicit formulae for divisor doubling and addition of divisors with disjoint support in $\mathbb{J}(C)$ using only base field operations. Explicit formulae is presented for this third case and a slightly different approach for divisor doubling.
For a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$, a divisor in general position of degree $g+1$ is given by polynomial equations. There is an action from an algebraic group on the representations of divisors by polynomials which fixes divisor classes. This structure reduces the question of rationality of divisor classes to rationality of polynomials which is more easy to control.
In the study of hyperelliptic curve cryptography, presentations of semi-reduced divisors on a hyperelliptic curve play important roles. In this note, we give an interpretation for such presentations from view points of Gröbner bases. As applications, (i) we give a method to construct weak $n$-contact curves and (ii) we study plane curves satisfying quasi-toric relations of type $(2, n, 2)$
We prove that k-th singular cohomology group of the complement of the theta divisor in a hyperelliptic Jacobian is isomorphic to the k-th fundamental representation of the symplectic group Sp(2g,C). This is one of the conjectures in our previous paper.
Two problems are addressed: reduction of an arbitrary degree non-special divisor to the equivalent divisor of the degree equal to genus of a curve, and addition of divisors of arbitrary degrees. The hyperelliptic case is considered as the simplest model. Explicit formulas defining reduced divisors for some particular cases are found. The reduced divisors are obtained in the form of solution of the Jacobi inversion problem which provides the way of computing Abelian functions on arbitrary non-special divisors. An effective reduction algorithm is proposed, which has the advantage that it involve…
Let $X$ be the moduli space of semistable rank 2 vector bundles over a smooth curve C of genus $g \ge 2$ and $θ: X \to PH^0(L)^*$ be the map associated to the generalized theta divisor L on X. We prove that for C not hyperelliptic, the map $θ$ is injective and the differential of $θ$ is injective at smooth points of X.
Buchstaber and Mikhailov introduced the polynomial dynamical systems in $\mathbb{C}^4$ with two polynomial integrals on the basis of commuting vector fields on the symmetric square of hyperelliptic curves. In our previous paper, we constructed the field of meromorphic functions on the sigma divisor of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 and solutions of the systems for $g=3$ by these functions. In this paper, as an application of our previous results, we construct two parametric deformation of the KdV-hierarchy. This new system is integrated in the meromorphic functions on the sigma divisor of hyp…
Let $\mathcal{M}_{g,2}$ be the moduli space of curves of genus $g$ with a level-2 structure. We prove here that there is always a non hyperelliptic element in the intersection of four thetanull divisors in $\mathcal{M}_{6,2}$. We prove also that for all $g\geqslant3$, each component of the hyperelliptic locus in $\mathcal{M}_{g,2}$ is a connected component of the intersection of $g-2$ thetanull divisors.
The field of meromorphic functions on a sigma divisor of a hyperelliptic curve of genus $3$ is described in terms of the gradient of it's sigma function. Solutions of corresponding families of polynomial dynamical systems in $\mathbb{C}^4$ with two polynomial integrals are constructed as an application. These systems were introduced in the work of V. M. Buchstaber and A. V. Mikhailov on the basis of commuting vector fields on the symmetric square of algebraic curves.
For applications in algebraic geometric codes, an explicit description of bases of Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors on function fields over finite fields is needed. We give an algorithm to compute such bases for one point divisors, and Weierstrass semigroups over an optimal tower of function fields. We also explicitly compute Weierstrass semigroups till level eight.
Let $(G, ω)$ be a hyperelliptic vertex-weighted graph of genus $g \geq 2$. We give a characterization of $(G, ω)$ for which there exists a smooth projective curve $X$ of genus $g$ over a complete discrete valuation field with reduction graph $(G, ω)$ such that the ranks of any divisors are preserved under specialization. We explain, for a given vertex-weighted graph $(G, ω)$ in general, how the existence of such $X$ relates the Riemann--Roch formulae for $X$ and $(G, ω)$, and also how the existence of such $X$ is related to a conjecture of Caporaso.
Equations of dispersionless Hirota type have been thoroughly investigated in the mathematical physics and differential geometry literature. It is known that the parameter space of integrable Hirota type equations in 3D is 21-dimensional and the action of the natural equivalence group Sp(6, R) on the parameter space has an open orbit. However the structure of the `master-equation' corresponding to this orbit remained elusive. Here we prove that the master-equation is specified by the vanishing of any genus 3 theta constant with even characteristic. The rich geometry of integrable Hirota type eq…
We prove a version of Clifford's theorem for metrized complexes. Namely, a metrized complex that carries a divisor of degree $2r$ and rank $r$ (for $0<r<g-1$) also carries a divisor of degree $2$ and rank $1$. We provide a structure theorem for hyperelliptic metrized complexes, and use it to classify divisors of degree bounded by the genus. We discuss a tropical version of Martens' theorem for metric graphs.
We prove a Riemann-Roch theorem for real divisors on edge-weighted graphs over the reals, extending the result of Baker and Norine for integral divisors on graphs with multiple edges.
We construct an infinite number of Shimura curves contained in the locus of hyperelliptic Jacobians of genus 3. In the opposite direction, we show that in genus 3 the only possible non-complete (in the moduli space of abelian threefolds) Kuga curves contained in the hyperelliptic locus have the same degeneration data as that of the examples we construct. The locus of genus 3 hyperelliptic Jacobians is a divisor within the moduli space of principally polarized abelian threefolds, and our result demonstrates the techniques we develop more generally for dealing with Shimura curves contained withi…
Let $\bar{G} = (G, ω)$ be a vertex-weighted graph, and $δ$ a divisor class on $G$. Let $r_{\bar{G}}(δ)$ denote the combinatorial rank of $δ$. Caporaso has introduced the algebraic rank $r_{\bar{G}}^{\operatorname{alg}}(δ)$ of $δ$, by using nodal curves with dual graph $\bar{G}$. In this paper, when $\bar{G}$ is hyperelliptic or of genus $3$, we show that $r_{\bar{G}}^{\operatorname{alg}}(δ) \geq r_{\bar{G}}(δ)$ holds, generalizing our previous result. We also show that, with respect to the specialization map from a non-hyperelliptic curve of genus $3$ to its reduction graph, any divisor on the…
We show that there exists a surjection from the set of effective divisors of degree $g$ on a tropical curve of genus $g$ to its Jacobian by using a tropical version of the Riemann-Roch theorem. We then show that the restriction of the surjection is reduced to the bijection on an appropriate subset of the set of effective divisors of degree $g$ on the curve. Thus the subset of effective divisors has the additive group structure induced from the Jacobian. We finally realize the addition in Jacobian of a tropical hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ via the intersection with a tropical curve of degre…
We determine the rational divisor class group of the moduli spaces of smooth pointed hyperelliptic curves and of their Deligne-Mumford compactification, over the field of complex numbers.
For an affine double plane defined by an equation of the form z^2 = f, we study the divisor class group and the Brauer group. Two cases are considered. In the first case, f is a product of n linear forms in k[x,y] and X is birational to a ruled surface P^1 x C, where C is rational if n is odd and hyperelliptic if n is even. In the second case, f is the equation of an affine hyperelliptic curve. On the open set where the cover is unramified, we compute the groups of divisor classes, the Brauer groups, the relative Brauer group, as well as all of the terms in he exact sequence of Chase, Harrison…
We prove a Riemann-Roch theorem of an entirely novel nature for divisors on the Arakelov compactification of the algebraic spectrum of the integers. This result relies on the introduction of three key concepts: the cohomologies (attached to a divisor), their integer dimension, and Serre duality. These notions directly extend their classical counterparts for function fields. The Riemann-Roch formula equates the (integer valued) Euler characteristic of a divisor with a slight modification of the traditional expression in terms of the sum of the degree of the divisor and the logarithm of 2. Both …
Let $ \; G \; $ be a group acting on a compact Riemann surface $ \; {\mathcal X} \; $ and $ \; D \; $ be a $ \; G$-invariant divisor on $\; {\mathcal X}. \; $ The action of $ \; G \; $ on $ \; {\mathcal X} \; $ induces a linear representation $ \; L_G(D) \; $ of $ \; G \; $ on the Riemann-Roch space associated to $ \; D.$ In this paper we give some results on the decomposition of $ \; L_G(D) \; $ as sum of complex irreducible representations of $ \; G, \; $ for $ \; D \; $ an effective non-special $\; G$-invariant divisor. In particular, we give explicit formulae for the multiplicity of each c…
We explain how the Riemann-Roch theorem for divisors on an abelian variety $A$ is related to the reduced norms of the Wedderburn components of $\operatorname{End}^0(A)$ the $\mathbb{Q}$-endomorphism algebra of $A$. We then describe consequences and examples.
By constructing suitable Borcherds forms on Shimura curves and using Schofer's formula for norms of values of Borcherds forms at CM-points, we determine all the equations of hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)$. As a byproduct, we also address the problem of whether a modular form on Shimura curves $X_0^D(N)/W_{D,N}$ with a divisor supported on CM-divisors can be realized as a Borcherds form, where $X_0^D(N)/W_{D,N}$ denotes the quotient of $X_0^D(N)$ by all the Atkin-Lehner involutions. The construction of Borcherds forms is done by solving certain integer programming problems.
We show that the space of theta functions on tropical tori is identified with a convex polyhedron. We also show a Riemann-Roch inequality for tropical abelian surfaces by calculating the self-intersection numbers of divisors.
In this paper we obtain conditions on the divisors of the group order of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic genus 2 curve, generated by the complex multiplication method described by Weng (2003) and Gaudry (2005). Examples, where these conditions imply that the Jacobian has a large cyclic subgroup, are given.
Recently, Baker and Norine have proven a Riemann-Roch theorem for finite graphs. We extend their results to metric graphs and thus establish a Riemann-Roch theorem for divisors on (abstract) tropical curves.
The locus of genus-two curves with n marked Weierstrass points has codimension n inside the moduli space of genus-two curves with n marked points, for n<=6. It is well known that the class of the closure of the divisor obtained for n=1 spans an extremal ray of the cone of effective divisor classes. We generalize this result for all n: we show that the class of the closure of the locus of genus-two curves with n marked Weierstrass points spans an extremal ray of the cone of effective classes of codimension n, for n<=6. A related construction produces extremal nef curve classes in moduli spaces …
We study the theta divisor of the compactified jacobian of a nodal, possibly reducible, curve. We compute its irreducible components and give it a geometric interpretation consistent with the classical Brill-Noether theory of smooth curves. Some applications on hyperelliptic stable curves are appended.
We describe an algorithm to compute the local component at p of the Coleman-Gross p-adic height pairing on divisors on hyperelliptic curves. As the height pairing is given in terms of a Coleman integral, we also provide new techniques to evaluate Coleman integrals of meromorphic differentials and present our algorithms as implemented in Sage.
If G is a finite subgroup of the automorphism group of a projective curve X and D is a divisor on X stabilized by G, then under the assumption that D is nonspecial, we compute a simplified formula for the trace of the natural representation of G on Riemann-Roch space L(D).
We investigate, using purely combinatorial methods, structural and algorithmic properties of linear equivalence classes of divisors on tropical curves. In particular, an elementary proof of the Riemann-Roch theorem for tropical curves, similar to the recent proof of the Riemann-Roch theorem for graphs by Baker and Norine, is presented. In addition, a conjecture of Baker asserting that the rank of a divisor D on a (non-metric) graph is equal to the rank of D on the corresponding metric graph is confirmed, and an algorithm for computing the rank of a divisor on a tropical curve is constructed.
In this paper we produce a generating function for the number of hyperelliptic curves (up to translation) on a polarized Abelian surfaces using the crepant resolution conjecture and the Yau-Zaslow formula. We present a formula to compute these in terms of MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisors functions, and prove that they are quasi-modular forms.
For a divisor $D$ on a tropical variety $X$, we define two amounts in order to estimate the value of $h^{0}(X,D)$, which are described by terms of global sections and computed more easily than $h^{0}(X,D)$. As an application of its estimation, we show that a Riemann-Roch inequality holds for smooth tropical toric surfaces.
We determine the rational Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ of $n$-pointed smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ when $n \leq 2g+6$. We also show that the Chow ring of the partial compactification $\mathcal{I}_{g,n}$, parametrizing $n$-pointed irreducible nodal hyperelliptic curves, is generated by tautological divisors. Along the way, we improve Casnati's result that $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ is rational for $n \leq 2g+8$ to show $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ is rational for $n \leq 3g+5$.
We find a closed formula for the number $\operatorname{hyp}(g)$ of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over a finite field $k=\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic. These numbers $\operatorname{hyp}(g)$ are expressed as a polynomial in $q$ with integer coefficients that depend on the set of divisors of $q-1$ and $q+1$. As a by-product we obtain a closed formula for the number of self-dual curves of genus $g$. A hyperelliptic curve is self-dual if it is $k$-isomorphic to its own hyperelliptic twist.
For the evaluation and inversion of abelian integrals we show that the image of the Abel-Jacobi map of genus less than 5 hyperelliptic curve in its Jacobian is the intersection of shifted theta divisors with specified shifts. Therefore the image is a solution of a (slightly overdetermined) set of equations in the Jacobian.
We define a divisor theory for graphs and tropical curves endowed with a weight function on the vertices; we prove that the Riemann-Roch theorem holds in both cases. We extend Baker's Specialization Lemma to weighted graphs.
Some families of constant dimension codes arising from Riemann-Roch spaces associated to particular divisors of a curve $\X$ are constructed. These families are generalizations of the one constructed by Hansen
Let $\{\infty^+, \infty^-\}$ be the two points above $\infty$ on the real hyperelliptic curve $H: y^2 = (x^2 - 1) \prod_{i=1}^{2g} (x - a_i)$. We show that the divisor $([\infty^+] - [\infty^-])$ is torsion in $\operatorname{Jac} J$ for a dense set of $(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_{2g}) \in (-1, 1)^{2g}$. In fact, we prove by degeneration to a nodal $\mathbb{P}^1$ that an associated period map has derivative generically of full rank.
We develop a new framework for investigating linear equivalence of divisors on graphs using a generalization of Gioan's cycle--cocycle reversal system for partial orientations. An oriented version of Dhar's burning algorithm is introduced and employed in the study of acyclicity for partial orientations. We then show that the Baker--Norine rank of a partially orientable divisor is one less than the minimum number of directed paths which need to be reversed in the generalized cycle--cocycle reversal system to produce an acyclic partial orientation. These results are applied in providing new proo…
S. Kondō used periods of $K3$ surfaces to prove that the moduli space of genus three curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a complex 6-ball. In this paper we study Heegner divisors in the ball quotient, given by arithmetically defined hyperplane sections of the ball. We show that the corresponding loci of genus three curves are given by: hyperelliptic curves, singular plane quartics and plane quartics admitting certain rational "splitting curves".
We study the action of a finite group on the Riemann-Roch space of certain divisors on a curve. If $G$ is a finite subgroup of the automorphism group of a projective curve $X$ over an algebraically closed field and $D$ is a divisor on $X$ left stable by $G$ then we show the irreducible constituents of the natural representation of $G$ on the Riemann-Roch space $L(D)=L_X(D)$ are of dimension $\leq d$, where $d$ is the size of the smallest $G$-orbit acting on $X$. We give an example to show that this is, in general, sharp (i.e., that dimension $d$ irreducible constituents can occur). Connections…
It is known that the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ of genus $g$ stable hyperelliptic curves with $n$ marked points is uniruled for $n \leq 4g+5$. In this paper we consider the complementary case. We calculate the canonical divisor of $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ and show that it is effective for $n=4g+6$ and big for $n\leq 4g+7$. This leads us to conjecture that $\overline{\mathcal{H}}_{g,n}$ has non-negative Kodaira dimension for $n = 4g+6$ and is of general type for $n \geq 4g+7$.
Let q>1 denote an integer relatively prime to 2,3,7 and for which G=PSL(2,q) is a Hurwitz group for a smooth projective curve X defined over C. We compute the G-module structure of the Riemann-Roch space L(D), where D is an invariant divisor on X of positive degree. This depends on a computation of the ramification module, which we give explicitly. In particular, we obtain the decomposition of H^1(X,C) as a G-module.
We give an algebraic method to compute the fourth power of the quotient of any even theta constants associated to a given non-hyperelliptic curve in terms of geometry of the curve. In order to apply the method, we work out non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, in particular, such curves lying on a singular quadric, which arise from del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1. Indeed, we obtain a complete 2-level structure of the curves by studying their theta characteristic divisors via exceptional divisors of the del Pezzo surfaces as the structure is required for the method.
In this thesis we study toric rank functions for chip firing games and prove special cases of a conjectural Riemann-Roch. The original motivation for an investigation into this area of study came for the adaptation (due to Matt Baker) of Riemann-Roch into a graph theoretic analogue through the use of chip-firing games. Here, we collect known results and present new observations that indicate Riemann--Roch holds for trees and polygons. We also prove an asymptotic case of Riemann--Roch (i.e.~Riemann--Roch for divisors of large degree). Finally, we also provide magma code and computational eviden…
In [1] M. Baker and S. Norine developed a theory of divisors and linear systems on graphs, and proved a Riemann-Roch Theorem for these objects (conceived as integer-valued functions on the vertices). In [2] and [3] the authors generalized these concepts to real-valued functions, and proved a corresponding Riemann-Roch Theorem in that setting, showing that it implied the Baker-Norine result. In this article we prove a Riemann-Roch Theorem in a more general combinatorial setting that is not necessarily driven by the existence of a graph.
We study several subseries of the space of second order theta functions on the Jacobian of a non-hyperelliptic curve. In particular, we are interested in the subseries PΓ_{00} consisting of 2theta-divisors having multiplicity at least 4 at the origin, or, equivalently, containing the surface C-C, and in its analogues consisting of 2theta-divisors having higher multiplicities at the origin, containing the four-fold Sym^2C-Sym^2C, or singular along the surface C-C. We use rank 2 vector bundles with a given number of global sections to prove canonical isomorphisms between quotients of the above i…
We prove an equivariant Riemann-Roch formula for divisors on algebraic curves over perfect fields. By reduction to the known case of curves over algebraically closed fields, we first show a preliminary formula with coefficients in Q. We then prove and shed some further light on a divisibility result that yields a formula with integral coefficients. Moreover, we give variants of the main theorem for equivariant locally free sheaves of higher rank.
In this work we study the generalized Weierstrass semigroup $\widehat{H} (\mathbf{P}_m)$ at an $m$-tuple $\mathbf{P}_m = (P_{1}, \ldots , P_{m})$ of rational points on certain curves admitting a plane model of the form $f(y) = g(x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, where ${f(T),g(T)\in \mathbb{F}_q[T]}$. In particular, we compute the generating set $\widehatΓ(\mathbf{P}_m)$ of $\widehat{H} (\mathbf{P}_m)$ and, as a consequence, we explicit a basis for Riemann-Roch spaces of divisors with support in $\{P_{1}, \ldots , P_{m}\}$ on these curves, generalizing results of Maharaj, Matthews, and Pirsic.
We give a formula for the component at p of the p-adic height pairing of a divisor of degree 0 on a hyperelliptic curve. We use this to give a Chabauty-like method for finding p-adic approximations to p-integral points on such curves when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian equals the genus. In this case we get an explicit bound for the number of such p-integral points, and we are able to use the method in explicit computation. An important aspect of the method is that it only requires a basis of the Mordell-Weil group tensored with the rationals.
