In this paper, we will consider the period index problems of elliptic curves and introduce a value called generic index which is closed related to the essential dimension of Picard stacks. In particular, we will use examples to see that usually the period and generic index are different. Our construction is different with Cassel's example.
The aim of the present paper is to study the (abstract) Picard group and the Picard group scheme of the moduli stack of stable pointed curves over an arbitrary scheme. As a byproduct, we compute the Picard groups of the moduli stack of stable or smooth pointed curves over a field of characteristic different from two.
In this paper we give a construction of algebraic (Artin) stacks endowed with a modular map onto the moduli stack of n-pointed stable curves of genus g, for g greater than 2. These stacks are smooth, irreducible and have dimension 4g-3+n, yielding a geometrically meaningful compactification of the degree d universal Picard stack over the moduli stack of smooth curves with marked points.
In this article we study the Picard functor and the Picard stack of an algebraic stack. We give a new and direct proof of the representability of the Picard stack. We prove that it is quasi-separated, and that the connected component of the identity is proper when the fibers of the stack are geometrically normal. We study some examples of Picard functors of classical stacks. In an appendix, we review the lisse-etale cohomology of abelian sheaves on an algebraic stack.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of stable hyperelliptic curves of any genus, exhibiting explicit and geometrically meaningful generators and relations.
We study algebraic (Artin) stacks over $\bar{\mathcal M}_g$ giving a functorial way of compactifying the relative degree $d$ Picard variety for families of stable curves. We also describe for every $d$ the locus of genus $g$ stable curves over which we get Deligne-Mumford stacks strongly representable over $\bar{\mathcal M}_g$.
We prove some finiteness theorems for the Picard functor of an algebraic stack, in the spirit of SGA 6, exp. XII and XIII. In particular, we give a stacky version of Raynaud's relative representability theorem, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of the torsion component of the Picard functor, and for the finite generation of the Neron-Severi groups or of the Picard group itself. We give some examples and applications. In an appendix, we prove the semicontinuity theorem for a (non necessarily tame) algebraic stack.
We compute the Grothendieck and Picard groups of a complete smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stack by using a suitable category of graded modules over a polynomial ring.
Let S be a site. We introduce the notion of extensions of strictly commutative Picard S-stacks. We define the pull-back, the push-down, and the sum of such extensions and we compute their homological interpretation: if P and Q are two strictly commutative Picard S-stacks, the equivalence classes of extensions of P by Q are parametrized by the cohomology group Ext^1([P],[Q]), where [P] and [Q] are the complex associated to P and Q respectively.
We study the stack B_{h,g,n} of uniform cyclic covers of degree n between smooth curves of genus h and g and, for h >> g, present it as an open substack of a vector bundle over the universal Jacobian stack of M_g. We use this description to compute the integral Picard group of B_{h,g,n}, showing that it is generated by tautological classes of B_{h,g,n}.
We prove that there exist some stacks, representable over the stack of stable curves, having the following universal property with respect to Néron models of Jacobians. For every one-parameter family of stable curves, with regular total space, the Néron model of the Jacobian of its generic fibre is isomorphic to the base change of the above stacks via the moduli map of the given family. We also obtain a stack compactification of the universal Picard scheme and hence a geometrically meaningful completion of the Néron model of the Jacobian for every family as above.
We show that fiberwise stable vector bundles are preserved by relative Fourier-Mukai transforms between elliptic threefolds with relative Picard number one. Using these bundles we define new invariants of elliptic fibrations, and we relate the invariants of a space with those of a relative moduli space of stable sheaves on it. As a byproduct, we calculate the intersection form of a certain new example of an elliptic Calabi-Yau threefold.
We construct the moduli stack of properly balanced vector bundles on semistable curves and we determine explicitly its Picard group. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit description of the Picard groups of the universal moduli stack of vector bundles on smooth curves and of the Schmitt's compactification over the stack of stable curves. We prove some results about the gerbe structure of the universal moduli stack over its rigidification by the natural action of the multiplicative group. In particular, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Poincaré bundles over the…
We compute the Picard groups with integral coefficients of the Hurwitz stacks parametrizing degree $4$ and $5$ covers of $\mathbb{P}^1$. As a consequence, we also determine the integral Picard groups of the Hurwitz stacks parametrizing simply branched covers. For simple branching, the Picard groups are finite, with order depending on the genus.
We determine explicitly the Picard groups of the universal Jacobian stack and of its compactification over the stack of stable curves. Along the way, we prove some results concerning the gerbe structure of the universal Jacobian stack over its rigidification by the natural action of the multiplicative group and relate this with the existence of generalized Poincaré line bundles. We also compare our results with Kouvidakis-Fontanari computations of the divisor class group of the universal (compactified) Jacobian scheme.
We outline a proof that the stack of symplectic toric G-manifolds over a fixed orbit space W is a torsor for the stack of symplectic toric G-principal bundles over W.
We compute the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order two, and of the stack of elliptic curves equipped with a cyclic subgroup of order three, over any base scheme on which 6 is invertible. This generalizes a result of Fulton-Olsson, who computed the Picard group of the stack of elliptic curves (with no level structure) over a wide variety of base schemes.
Cohomology of a topological space with coefficients in stacks of abelian 2-groups is considered. A 2-categorical analog of the theorem of Grothendieck is proved, relating cohomology of the space with coefficients in a 2-stage spectrum and the Ext groups of appropriate stacks.
Let $A=(a_1,\ldots,a_n)$ be a vector of integers with $d=\sum_{i=1}^n a_i$. By partial resolution of the classical Abel-Jacobi map, we construct a universal twisted double ramification cycle $\mathsf{DR}^{\mathsf{op}}_{g,A}$ as an operational Chow class on the Picard stack $\mathfrak{Pic}_{g,n,d}$ of $n$-pointed genus $g$ curves carrying a degree $d$ line bundle. The method of construction follows the log (and b-Chow) approach to the standard double ramification cycle with canonical twists on the moduli space of curves [arXiv:1707.02261, arXiv:1711.10341, arXiv:1708.04471]. Our main result is …
We define a tricategory T of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves, whose hom-bigroupoids consist of weak morphisms of such complexes. We also define a 3-category 2PIC(S) of Picard 2-stacks, whose hom-2-groupoids consist of additive 2-functors. We prove that these categories are triequivalent as tricategories. As a consequence we obtain a generalization of Deligne's analogous result about Picard stacks in SGA4, Exp. XVIII.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of smooth curves of genus $g$ for $3\leq g\leq 5$, using methods of equivariant intersection theory. We base our proof on the computation of some relations in the integral Chow ring of certain moduli stacks of smooth complete intersections. As a byproduct, we compute the cycle classes of some divisors on $\mathcal{M}_g$.
We construct full strong exceptional collections of line bundles on smooth toric Fano Deligne-Mumford stacks of Picard number at most two and of any Picard number in dimension two. It is hoped that the approach of this paper will eventually lead to the proof of the existence of such collections on all smooth toric nef-Fano Deligne-Mumford stacks.
We first study the descent theory of line bundles under a morphism which is tors or under a group stack and then use this technical result to determine the exact structure of $\Pic(\M_G)$ where $G=\SL_r/μ_s$ (we include a minor modification to explain the genus 0 case).
Using Gauss-Manin derivatives of normal functions, we arrive at some remarkable results on the non-triviality of the transcendental regulator for $K_m$ of a very general projective algebraic manifold. Our strongest results are for the transcendental regulator for $K_1$ of a very general $K3$ surface. We also construct an explicit family of $K_1$ cycles on $H \oplus E_8 \oplus E_8$-polarized $K3$ surfaces, and show they are indecomposable by a direct evaluation of the real regulator. Critical use is made of natural elliptic fibrations, hypersurface normal forms, and an explicit parametrization …
This article treats the Picard group of the moduli (stack) of r-spin curves and its compactification. Generalized spin curves, or r-spin curves are a natural generalization of 2-spin curves (algebraic curves with a theta-characteristic), and have been of interest lately because they are the subject of a remarkable conjecture of E. Witten, and because of the similarities between the intersection theory of these moduli spaces and that of the moduli of stable maps. We generalize results of Cornalba, giving relations between many of the elements of the Picard group of the stacks. These relations a…
We define stacks of uniform cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes, proving that they can be realized as quotient stacks of open subsets of representations, and compute the Picard group for the open substacks parametrizing smooth uniform cyclic covers. Moreover, we give an analogous description for stacks parametrizing triple cyclic covers of Brauer-Severi schemes of rank 1, which are not necessarily uniform, and give a presentation of the Picard group for substacks corresponding to smooth triple cyclic covers.
For any smooth connected linear algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field k, we describe the Picard group of the universal moduli stack of principal G-bundles over pointed smooth k-projective curves.
The aim of this paper is to define and study the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks over a site S and to furnish a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves. More precisely, our main Theorem furnishes (1) a parametrization of the equivalence classes of objects, 1-arrows, 2-arrows, and 3-arrows of the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks by the cohomology groups Ext^i, and (2) a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves via extensions of Picard 2-stacks. To this end, we us…
Let S be a site. We introduce the 2-category of biextensions of strictly commutative Picard S-stacks. We define the pull-back, the push-down, and the sum of such biextensions and we compute their homological interpretation: if P,Q and G are strictly commutative Picard S-stacks, the equivalence classes of biextensions of (P,Q) by G are parametrized by the cohomology group Ext^1([P] {\otimes} [Q] ,[G]), the isomorphism classes of arrows from such a biextension to itself are parametrized by the cohomology group Ext^0([P]{\otimes} [Q] ,[G]) and the automorphisms of an arrow from such a biextension…
A new class of examples of surfaces with maximal Picard number is constructed. These carry pencils of genus two or three curves such their Jacobian fibrations are isogenous to fibre products of elliptic modular surfaces.
Let S be a site. First we define the 3-category of torsors under a Picard S-2-stack and we compute its homotopy groups. Using calculus of fractions we define also a pure algebraic analogue of the 3-category of torsors under a Picard S-2-stack. Then we describe extensions of Picard S-2-stacks as torsors endowed with a group law on the fibers. As a consequence of such a description, we show that any Picard S-2-stack admits a canonical free partial left resolution that we compute explicitly. Moreover we get an explicit right resolution of the 3-category of extensions of Picard S-2-stacks in terms…
The main subject of this work is the difference between the coarse moduli space and the stack of hyperelliptic curves. We compute their Picard groups, giving explicit description of the generators. We get an application to the (non-)existence of a tautological family over the coarse moduli space.
We prove that the Brauer group of TMF is isomorphic to the Brauer group of the derived moduli stack of elliptic curves. Then, we compute the local Brauer group, i.e., the subgroup of the Brauer group of elements trivialized by some étale cover of the moduli stack, up to a finite 2-torsion group.
We study in this article the dual of a (strictly) commutative group stack $G$ and give some applications. Using the Picard functor and the Picard stack of $G$, we first give some sufficient conditions for $G$ to be dualizable. Then, for an algebraic stack $X$ with suitable assumptions, we define an Albanese morphism $a_X : X\to A^1(X)$ where $A^1(X)$ is a torsor under the dual commutative group stack $A^0(X)$ of $Pic_{X/S}$. We prove that $a_X$ satisfies a natural universal property. We give two applications of our Albanese morphism. On the one hand, we give a geometric description of the elem…
Motivated by a problem originating in string theory, we study elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces with large Picard number modulo isomorphism. We give methods to determine upper bounds for the number of inequivalent K3 surfaces sharing the same frame lattice. For any given Neron--Severi lattice $S_X$, such a bound on the `multiplicity' can be derived by investigating the quotient of the isometry group of $S_X$ by the automorphism group. The resulting bounds are strongest for large Picard numbers and multiplicities of unity do indeed occur for a number of K3 surfaces with Picard number 20. Under…
We construct the logarithmic and tropical Picard groups of a family of logarithmic curves and realize the latter as the quotient of the former by the algebraic Jacobian. We show that the logarithmic Jacobian is a proper family of logarithmic abelian varieties over the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable curves, but does not possess an underlying algebraic stack. However, the logarithmic Picard group does have logarithmic modifications that are representable by logarithmic schemes, all of which are obtained by pullback from subdivisions of the tropical Picard group.
We describe an algorithm for computing the Picard-Fuchs equation for a family of twists of a fixed elliptic surface. We then apply this algorithm to obtain the equation for several examples, which are coming from families of Kummer surfaces over Shimura curves, as studied in our previous work. We use this to find correspondenced between the parameter spaces of our families and Shimura curves. These correspondences can sometimes be proved rigorously.
Using toric geometry, lattice theory, and elliptic surface techniques, we compute the Picard Lattice of certain K3 surfaces. In particular, we examine the generic member of each of M. Reid's list of 95 families of Gorenstein K3 surfaces which occur as hypersurfaces in weighted projective 3-spaces. The results appear in a multipage table near the end of the paper. As an application, we are able to determine whether the mirror family (in the sense of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces) for each one is also on Reid's list.
We use methods for computing Picard numbers of reductions of K3 surfaces in order to study the decomposability of Jacobians over number fields and the variance of Mordell-Weil ranks of families of Jacobians over different ground fields. For example, we give examples of surfaces whose Picard numbers jump in rank at all primes of good reduction using Mordell-Weil groups of Jacobians and show that the genus of curves over number fields whose Jacobians are isomorphic to a product of elliptic curves satisfying certain reduction conditions is bounded. The isomorphism result addresses the number fiel…
