We compute the Grothendieck and Picard groups of a complete smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stack by using a suitable category of graded modules over a polynomial ring.
We give a short proof of a Grothendieck-Lefschetz Theorem for equivariant Picard groups of nonsingular varieties with the action of an affine algebraic group.
We propose a strengthening of the Grothendieck--Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for the local Picard group, prove some special cases and derive several consequences to the deformation theory of log canonical singularities. Version 2: Main conjecture changed, following recent results of Bhatt and de Jong. Small changes to the proofs.
In this paper, we study derived categories of certain toric varieties with Picard number three that are blowing-up another toric varieties along their torus invariant loci of codimension at most three. We construct strong full exceptional collections by using Orlov's blow-up formula and mutations.
We classify toric log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one by introducing the notion, cascades. As an application, we show that if such a surface is Kähler-Einstein, then it should admit a special cascade, and it satisfies the equality of the orbifold Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality, i.e., $K^2 = 3e_{orb}.$
We investigate full strongly exceptional collections on smooth, com- plete toric varieties. We obtain explicit results for a large family of varieties with Picard number three, containing many of the families already known. We also describe the relations between the collections and the split of the push forward of the trivial line bundle by the toric Frobenius morphism.
We give a combinatorial criterion for the tangent bundle on a smooth toric variety to be stable with respect to a given polarisation in terms of the corresponding lattice polytope. Furthermore, we show that for a smooth toric surface and a smooth toric variety of Picard rank 2, there exists an ample line bundle with respect to which the tangent bundle is stable if and only if it is an iterated blow-up of projective space.
We show that the usual sufficient criterion for a generic hypersurface in a smooth projective manifold to have the same Picard number as the ambient variety can be generalized to hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. This sufficient condition is always satisfied by generic K3 surfaces embedded in Fano toric 3-folds.
We develop in detail most of the theory of the Picard scheme that Grothendieck sketched in two Bourbaki talks and in commentaries on them. Also, we review in brief much of the rest of the theory developed by Grothendieck and by others. But we begin with a twelve-page historical introduction, which traces the development of the ideas from Bernoulli to Grothendieck, and which may appeal to a wider audience.
In this paper, we give the complete classification of full exceptional collections on smooth toric Fano threefolds and fourfolds with Picard rank two. To be precise, we give a partial answer to the conjecture in \cite{Kuz} and \cite{LYY}: we provide all the exceptional collections of maximal length and prove that they are in fact full exceptional collections.
For a fan $Δ$, we introduce Grothendieck weights as a ring of functions from $Δ$ to $\mathbb{Z}$ that form a K-theoretic analogue of Minkowski weights and describe the operational $K$-theory of a complete toric variety. We give an explicit balancing condition and product formula for these weights, and describe relationships with other fan-based invariants. Applications are given to vector bundles on a toric surface, and to the calculation of Euler characteristics on schon subvarieties.
We construct a full, strongly exceptional collection of line bundles on the variety X that is the blow up of the projectivization of the vector bundle O_{P^{n-1}}\oplus O_{P^{n-1}}(b) along a linear space of dimension n-2, where b is a non-negative integer.
We study the Picard rank of smooth toric Fano varieties possessing families of minimal rational curves of given degree. We discuss variants of a conjecture of Chen-Fu-Hwang and prove a version of their statement that recovers the original conjecture in sufficiently high dimension. We also prove new cases of the original conjecture for high degrees in all dimensions. Our main tools come from toric Mori theory and the combinatorics of Fano polytopes.
Let $X$ be a $\Q$-factorial complete toric variety over an algebraic closed field of characteristic $0$. There is a canonical injection of the Picard group ${\rm Pic}(X)$ in the group ${\rm Cl}(X)$ of classes of Weil divisors. These two groups are finitely generated abelian groups; whilst the first one is a free group, the second one may have torsion. We investigate algebraic and geometrical conditions under which the image of ${\rm Pic}(X)$ in ${\rm Cl}(X)$ is contained in a free part of the latter group.
In this paper we show that a smooth toric variety $X$ of Picard number $r\leq 3$ always admits a nef primitive collection supported on a hyperplane admitting non-trivial intersection with the cone $\Nef(X)$ of numerically effective divisors and cutting a facet of the pseudo-effective cone $\Eff(X)$, that is $\Nef(X)\cap\partial\overline{\Eff}(X)\neq\{0\}$. In particular this means that $X$ admits non-trivial and non-big numerically effective divisors. Geometrically this guarantees the existence of a fiber type contraction morphism over a smooth toric variety of dimension and Picard number lowe…
We study the structure of rational Picard groups of hypersurfaces of toric varieties. By using the fan structure associated to the ambient toric variety, an explicit basis of the Picard group is described by certain combinatorial data. We shall also discuss the application to Calabi-Yau spaces.
This paper is devoted to settle two still open problems, connected with the existence of ample and nef divisors on a Q-factorial complete toric variety. The first problem is about the existence of ample divisors when the Picard number is 2: we give a positive answer to this question, by studying the secondary fan by means of Z-linear Gale duality. The second problem is about the minimum value of the Picard number allowing the vanishing of the Nef cone: we present a 3-dimensional example showing that this value cannot be greater then 3, which, under the previous result, is also the minimum valu…
We outline a proof that the stack of symplectic toric G-manifolds over a fixed orbit space W is a torsor for the stack of symplectic toric G-principal bundles over W.
In each dimension n>2 there are many projective simplicial toric varieties whose Grothendieck groups of vector bundles are at least as big as the ground field. In particular, the conjecture that the Grothendieck groups of locally trivial sheaves and coherent sheaves on such varieties are rationally isomorphic fails badly.
In this note, we prove that the Grothendieck group of a smooth complete toric Deligne-Mumford stack is torsion free. This statement holds when the generic point is stacky. We also construct an example of open toric stack with torsion in K-theory. This is a part of the author's Ph.D thesis.
Toric log Del Pezzo surfaces with Picard number 1 have been completely classified whenever their index is $\le 2$: In this paper we extend the classification for those having index 3: We prove that, up to isomorphism, there are exactly 18 surfaces of this kind.
We derive the combinatorial representations of Picard group and deformation space of anti-canonical hypersurfaces of a toric variety using techniques in toric geometry. The mirror cohomology correspondence in the context of mirror symmetry is established for a pair of Calabi-Yau (CY) ${\sf n}$-spaces in toric varieties defined by reflexive polytopes for an arbitrary dimension ${\sf n}$. We further identify the Kahler cone of the toric variety and degeneration cone of CY hypersurfaces, by which the Kahler cone and degeneration cone for a mirror CY pair are interchangeable under mirror symmetry.…
We construct full strong exceptional collections of line bundles on smooth toric Fano Deligne-Mumford stacks of Picard number at most two and of any Picard number in dimension two. It is hoped that the approach of this paper will eventually lead to the proof of the existence of such collections on all smooth toric nef-Fano Deligne-Mumford stacks.
We describe all of the smooth complete toric threefolds of Picard number 5 with no nontrivial nef line bundles, and show that no such examples exist with Picard number less than 5.
In this expository note, we review the standard formulation of mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, and compare this construction to a description of mirror symmetry for K3 surfaces which relies on a sublattice of the Picard lattice. We then show how to combine information about the Picard group of a toric ambient space with data about automorphisms of the toric variety to identify families of K3 surfaces with high Picard rank.
Q-factorial Gorenstein toric Fano varieties X of dimension d with Picard number rho(X) correspond to simplicial reflexive d-polytopes with rho(X)+d vertices. Casagrande showed that any simplicial reflexive d-polytope has at most 3d vertices, if d is even, respectively, 3d-1, if d is odd. Moreover, it is known that equality for d even implies uniqueness up to unimodular equivalence. In this paper we completely classify all simplicial reflexive d-polytopes having 3d-1 vertices, corresponding to d-dimensional Q-factorial Gorenstein toric Fano varieties with Picard number 2d-1. For d even, there e…
We give a complete answer to the question of (semi)stability of tangent bundle of any nonsingular projective complex toric variety with Picard number 2 by using combinatorial crietrion of (semi)stability of an equivariant sheaf. We also give a complete answer to the question of (semi)stability of tangent bundle of all toric Fano 4-folds with Picard number (\leq) 3 which are classified by Batyrev \cite{batyrev}. We have constructed a collection of equivariant indecomposable rank 2 vector bundles on Bott tower and pseudo-symmetric toric Fano varieties. Further in case of Bott tower, we have show…
Let $X$ be a proper smooth toric variety over a perfectoid field of prime residue characteristic $p$. We study the perfectoid space $\mathcal{X}^{perf}$ which covers $X$ constructed by Scholze, showing that $\text{Pic}(\mathcal{X}^{perf})$ is canonically isomorphic to $\text{Pic}(X)[p^{-1}]$. We also compute the cohomology of line bundles on $\mathcal{X}^{perf}$ and establish analogs of Demazure and Batyrev-Borisov vanishing. This generalizes the first author's analogous results for "projectivoid space".
We show that the second Chern character of any projective toric manifold of Picard number three is not ample. In connection with this result, we give various examples of the positivity of higher Chern characters of projective toric manifolds.
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether toric manifolds are diffeomorphic (or homeomorphic) if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. Many affirmative partial solutions to the problem have been obtained and no counterexample is known. In this paper, we study the diffeomorphism classification of toric Fano $d$-folds with $d=3,4$ or with Picard number $\ge 2d-2$. In particular, we show that those manifolds except for two toric Fano $4$-folds are diffeomorphic if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. The exceptional two toric Fano $4$-folds (their ID…
Simplicial toric stack bundles are smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks over smooth varieties with fibre a toric Deligne-Mumford stack. We compute the Grothendieck $K$-theory of simplicial toric stack bundles and study the Chern character homomorphism.
CORRECTION. One of the main results in this paper contains a fatal error. We cannot conclude the existence of nontrivial vector bundles on X from the nontriviality of its K-group. The K-group that is computed here is the Grothendieck group of perfect complexes and not vector bundles. Since the varieties are not quasi-projective, existence of nontrivial perfect complexes says nothing about the existence of nontrivial vector bundles. We thank Sam Payne for drawing our attention to the error and Christian Haesemeyer for explanations about the K-theory. Abstract: Following Sam Payne's work, we stu…
We prove that a smooth well formed Picard rank one Fano complete intersection of dimension at least 2 in a toric variety is a weighted complete intersection.
We explicitly calculate the Grothendieck $K$-theory ring of a smooth toric Deligne-Mumford stack and define an analog of the Chern character. In addition, we calculate $K$-theory pushforwards and pullbacks for weighted blowups of reduced smooth toric DM stacks.
Let X be a complete toric variety and let Y be a smooth projective variety with Picard number one. We prove that, if there exists a surjective morphism from X to Y, then Y is a projective space.
From any monoid scheme $X$ (also known as an $\mathbb{F}_1$-scheme) one can pass to a semiring scheme (a generalization of a tropical scheme) $X_S$ by scalar extension to an idempotent semifield $S$. We prove that for a given irreducible monoid scheme $X$ (satisfying some mild conditions) and an idempotent semifield $S$, the Picard group $Pic(X)$ of $X$ is stable under scalar extension to $S$ (and in fact to any field $K$). In other words, we show that the groups $Pic(X)$ and $Pic(X_S)$ (and $Pic(X_K)$) are isomorphic. In particular, if $X_\mathbb{C}$ is a toric variety, then $Pic(X)$ is the s…
We prove that every Q-factorial complete toric variety is a finite quotient of a poly weighted space (PWS), as defined in our previous work arXiv:1501.05244. This generalizes the Batyrev-Cox and Conrads description of a Q-factorial complete toric variety of Picard number 1, as a finite quotient of a weighted projective space (WPS) \cite[Lemma~2.11]{BC} and \cite[Prop.~4.7]{Conrads}, to every possible Picard number, by replacing the covering WPS with a PWS. As a consequence we describe the bases of the subgroup of Cartier divisors inside the free group of Weil divisors and the bases of the Pica…
We investigate the possibility of embedding minimal abelian surfaces in smooth toric 4-folds with Picard number 2. The existence of such an embedding imposes conditions on the 4-fold, which we partly describe. On the other hand, we exhibit such embeddings in a special case, using a simple description of morphisms into smooth toric varieties.
We prove a strengthening of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for local Picard groups conjectured by Kollár. Our approach, which relies on acyclicity results for absolute integral closures, also leads to a restriction theorem for higher rank bundles on projective varieties in positive characteristic.
For a toric Fano manifold $X$ denote by $Crit(X) \subset (\mathbb{C}^{\ast})^n$ the solution scheme of the Landau-Ginzburg system of equations of $X$. Examples of toric Fano manifolds with $rk(Pic(X)) \leq 3$ which admit full strongly exceptional collections of line bundles were recently found by various authors. For these examples we construct a map $E : Crit(X) \rightarrow Pic(X)$ whose image $\mathcal{E}=\left \{ E(z) \vert z \in Crit(X) \right \}$ is a full strongly exceptional collection satisfying the M-aligned property. That is, under this map, the groups $Hom(E(z),E(w))$ for $z,w \in C…
We study the variation of relative cohomology for a pair consisting of a smooth projective hypersurface and an algebraic subvariety in it. We construct an inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation by applying a Picard-Fuchs operator to the holomorphic top form on a toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and deriving a general formula for the $d$-exact form on one side of the equation. We also derive a double residue formula, giving a purely algebraic way to compute the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations for Abel-Jacobi map, which has played an important role in recent study of D-branes [25]. Using the var…
Cohomology of a topological space with coefficients in stacks of abelian 2-groups is considered. A 2-categorical analog of the theorem of Grothendieck is proved, relating cohomology of the space with coefficients in a 2-stage spectrum and the Ext groups of appropriate stacks.
