This article treats the Picard group of the moduli (stack) of r-spin curves and its compactification. Generalized spin curves, or r-spin curves are a natural generalization of 2-spin curves (algebraic curves with a theta-characteristic), and have been of interest lately because they are the subject of a remarkable conjecture of E. Witten, and because of the similarities between the intersection theory of these moduli spaces and that of the moduli of stable maps.
We generalize results of Cornalba, giving relations between many of the elements of the Picard group of the stacks. These relations are important in the proof of the genus-zero case of Witten's conjecture given in math.AG/9905034. We use these relations to show that when 2 or 3 divides r, then the Picard group of the open stack has non-zero torsion. And finally, we work out some specific examples for small values of g and r.
The aim of the present paper is to study the (abstract) Picard group and the Picard group scheme of the moduli stack of stable pointed curves over an arbitrary scheme. As a byproduct, we compute the Picard groups of the moduli stack of stable or smooth pointed curves over a field of characteristic different from two.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of stable hyperelliptic curves of any genus, exhibiting explicit and geometrically meaningful generators and relations.
We speculate about an algebro-geometric proof of Harer's theorem on the rational Picard group of the moduli space of smooth complex curves. In particular, we refine the approach of Diaz and Edidin involving the Hurwitz space which parameterizes smooth covers of the projective line.
We study the Picard groups of moduli spaces in positive characteristics and we give a "$p$-adic" proof that the Picard group of moduli of vector bundles of fixed determinant is isomorphic to the group of integers. Along the way we prove that the local fundamental group scheme of a normal unirational projective variety is trivial. This is reminiscent of results of Serre and Nygaard who studied the fundamental groups of smooth, projective, unirational varieties.
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $g\geq 3$ and let $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{par}}$ be the moduli space of semistable parabolic bundles over $X$. Let $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{parH}}$ denote the moduli space of semistable parabolic Higgs bundles over $X$. In this article, we study the Picard group of $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{par}}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{\mathrm{parH}}$.
We refine the notion of higher spin curves defined in terms of line bundles by Caporaso, Cornalba and Casagrande by adding the data of coherent nets of roots introduced by Jarvis in terms of torsion-free sheaves and we describe the boundary part of their moduli space. We provide then a presentation of the rational Picard group of this moduli space.
We determine the Brauer group and Picard group of the moduli space $U^{' s}_{L,par}$ of stable parabolic vector bundles of rank $r$ with determinant $L$ on a real curve $Y$ of arithmetic genus $g \,\ge\, 2$ with at most nodes as singularities.
We study the moduli space of smooth complete intersections of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^n$ by relating it to the geometry of the singular members of the corresponding pencils. Giving an alternative presentation for the moduli space of complete intersections, we compute the Picard group for all $n\geq 3$.
The main subject of this work is the difference between the coarse moduli space and the stack of hyperelliptic curves. We compute their Picard groups, giving explicit description of the generators. We get an application to the (non-)existence of a tautological family over the coarse moduli space.
In this paper we give a construction of algebraic (Artin) stacks endowed with a modular map onto the moduli stack of n-pointed stable curves of genus g, for g greater than 2. These stacks are smooth, irreducible and have dimension 4g-3+n, yielding a geometrically meaningful compactification of the degree d universal Picard stack over the moduli stack of smooth curves with marked points.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli stack of smooth curves of genus $g$ for $3\leq g\leq 5$, using methods of equivariant intersection theory. We base our proof on the computation of some relations in the integral Chow ring of certain moduli stacks of smooth complete intersections. As a byproduct, we compute the cycle classes of some divisors on $\mathcal{M}_g$.
We discuss the Picard group of moduli space $\mathcal{K}_g$ of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces of genus $g\leq 12$ and $g\neq 11$. In this range, $\mathcal{K}_g$ is unirational and a general element in $\mathcal{K}_g$ is a complete intersection with respect to a vector bundle on a homogenous space, by the work of Mukai. In this paper, we find generators of the Picard group $Pic_\mathbb{Q}(\mathcal{K}_g)$ using Noether-Lefschetz theory. This verifies the Noether-Lefschetz conjecture on moduli of K3 surfaces in these cases.
In this note, we prove that the Q-Picard group of the moduli space of n-pointed stable curves of genus g over an algebraically closed field is generated by the tautological classes. We also prove that the cycle map to the 2nd etale cohomology group is bijective.
In this paper, we study the Picard group of the moduli space of semistable sheaves on a smooth quadric surface. We polarize the surface by an ample divisor close to the anticanonical class. We focus especially on moduli spaces of sheaves of small discriminant, where we observe new and interesting behavior. Our method relies on constructing certain resolutions for semistable sheaves and applying techniques of geometric invariant theory to the resulting families of sheaves.
We compute the Picard group of the moduli space $U'$ of semistable vector bundles of rank $n$ and degree $d$ on an irreducible nodal curve $Y$ and show that $U'$ is locally factorial. We determine the canonical line bundles of $U'$ and $U'_L$, the subvariety consisting of vector bundles with a fixed determinant. For rank 2, we compute the Picard group of other strata in the compactification of $U'$.
We construct the moduli stack of properly balanced vector bundles on semistable curves and we determine explicitly its Picard group. As a consequence, we obtain an explicit description of the Picard groups of the universal moduli stack of vector bundles on smooth curves and of the Schmitt's compactification over the stack of stable curves. We prove some results about the gerbe structure of the universal moduli stack over its rigidification by the natural action of the multiplicative group. In particular, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Poincaré bundles over the…
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve of genus $g \geq 2$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $\mathrm{M}_{G, {\rm Higgs}}^δ$ be the moduli space of semistable principal $G$--Higgs bundles on $X$ of topological type $δ\in π_1(G)$. In this article, we compute the fundamental group and Picard group of $\mathrm{M}_{G, {\rm Higgs}}^δ$.
Let $C$ be a hyperelliptic curve embedded in its Jacobian $J$ via an Abel-Jacobi map. We compute the scheme structure of the Hilbert scheme component of $\textrm{Hilb}_J$ containing the Abel-Jacobi curve as a point. We relate the result to the ramification (and to the fibres) of the Torelli morphism $\mathcal M_g\rightarrow \mathcal A_g$ along the hyperelliptic locus. As an application, we determine the scheme structure of the moduli space of Picard sheaves (introduced by Mukai) on a hyperelliptic Jacobian.
Let $U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ be the moduli space of stable vector bundles of rank $n$ with determinant $L$ where $L$ is a fixed line bundle of degree $d$ over a nodal curve $Y$. We prove that the projective Poincare bundle on $Y \times U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ and the projective Picard bundle on $U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ are stable for suitable polarisation. For a nonsingular point $x \in Y$, we show that the restriction of the projective Poincare bundle to $x \times U^{'s}_L(n,d)$ is stable for any polarisation. We prove that for arithmetic genus $g\ge 3$ and for $g=n=2, d$ odd, the Picard group of the moduli space $U'_L…
We prove that, for a natural class of Bridgeland stability conditions on $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and the blow-up of $\mathbb{P}^2$ at a point, the moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects are projective. Our technique is to find suitable regions of stability conditions with hearts that are (after "rotation") equivalent to representations of a quiver. The helix and tilting theory is well-behaved on Del Pezzo surfaces and we conjecture that this program (begun in arXiv:1203.0316) runs successfully for all Del Pezzo surfaces, and the analogous Bridgeland moduli spaces are projectiv…
We prove that the Picard group of the moduli space of semistable G-bundles on any irreducible smooth projective curve is isomorphic with the group of integers.
Let C be a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Let M_{r,L}^{ss} denote the projective coarse moduli scheme of semistable rank r vector bundles over C with fixed determinant L. We prove Pic(M_{r,L}^{ss}) = Z, identify the ample generator, and deduce that M_{r,L}^{ss} is locally factorial. In characteristic zero, this has already been proved by Drézet and Narasimhan. The main point of the present note is to circumvent the usual problems with Geometric Invariant Theory in positive caracteristic.
We prove that there exist some stacks, representable over the stack of stable curves, having the following universal property with respect to Néron models of Jacobians. For every one-parameter family of stable curves, with regular total space, the Néron model of the Jacobian of its generic fibre is isomorphic to the base change of the above stacks via the moduli map of the given family. We also obtain a stack compactification of the universal Picard scheme and hence a geometrically meaningful completion of the Néron model of the Jacobian for every family as above.
We define Hecke transformation for orthogonal bundles over a compact Riemann surface. Using the cycles on a moduli space of orthogonal bundles given by Hecke transformations, we prove that the projectivized Picard bundle on the moduli space is stable.
We determine the rational divisor class group of the moduli spaces of smooth pointed hyperelliptic curves and of their Deligne-Mumford compactification, over the field of complex numbers.
We have recently proved a homological stability theorem for moduli spaces of r-Spin Riemann surfaces, which in particular implies a Madsen--Weiss theorem for these moduli spaces. This allows us to effectively study their stable cohomology, and to compute their stable rational cohomology and their integral Picard groups. Using these methods we give a complete description of their integral Picard groups for genus at least 9 in terms of geometrically defined generators, and determine the relations between them.
Let G be a complex semi-simple group, and X a compact Riemann surface. The moduli space of principal G-bundles on X, and in particular the holomorphic line bundles on this space and their global sections, play an important role in the recent applications of Conformal Field Theory to algebraic geometry. In this paper we determine the Picard group of this moduli space when G is of classical or G_2 type (we consider both the coarse moduli space and the moduli stack).
Let X be a nonsingular projective algebraic curve of genus g\ge3. We consider the moduli space M of stable bundles of fixed determinant with rank n and degree d coprime and d>n(2g-2). There is a universal bundle on XxM and we consider the direct image of this bundle on M. With the given restriction on d, this is a bundle W called the Picard bundle. Our main object in this paper is to compute the infinitesimal deformations of W. We show also that W possesses a moduli space and that the connected component of this moduli space containing W is isomorphic as a polarised variety to the Jacobian of …
We consider the symplectic action of a finite group G on a K3 surface. The Picard group of the K3 surface has a primitive sublattice determined by G. We show how to compute the rank and discriminant of this sublattice. We then describe moduli spaces of K3 surfaces with symplectic G-action, extending results of Nikulin in the abelian case. We use our moduli spaces to develop techniques for classifying all possible symplectic actions of a group G.
We study the Picard groups of moduli spaces of smooth complex projective curves that have a group of automorphisms with a prescribed topological action. One of our main tools is the theory of symmetric mapping class groups. In the first part of the paper, we show that, under mild restrictions, the moduli spaces of smooth curves with an abelian group of automorphisms of a fixed topological type have finitely generated Picard groups. In certain special cases, we are able to compute them exactly. In the second part of the paper, we show that finite abelian level covers of the hyperelliptic locus …
Let $\mathcal C$ be a smooth irreducible projective curve over the complex numbers and let $G$ be a simple simply-connected complex algebraic group. Let $\mathfrak M=\mathfrak M(G,\mathcal C)$ be the moduli space of semistable principal $G$-bundles on $\mathcal C$. By an earlier result of Kumar-Narasimhan, the Picard group of $\mathfrak M$ is isomorphic with the group of integers. However, in their work the generator of the Picard group was not determined explicitly. The aim of this paper to give the generator `explicitly.' The proof involves an interesting mix of geometry and topology.
We show that for any stable sheaf $E$ of slope $> 2g-1$ on a smooth, projective curve of genus $g$, the associated Picard sheaf $\hat{E}$ on the Picard variety of the curve is stable. We introduce a homological tool for testing semistability of Picard sheaves.
We first study the descent theory of line bundles under a morphism which is tors or under a group stack and then use this technical result to determine the exact structure of $\Pic(\M_G)$ where $G=\SL_r/μ_s$ (we include a minor modification to explain the genus 0 case).
For any smooth connected linear algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field k, we describe the Picard group of the universal moduli stack of principal G-bundles over pointed smooth k-projective curves.
Let $C$ be a smooth irreducible complex projective curve of genus $g \geq 2$ and $M$ the moduli space of stable vector bundles on $C$ of rank $n$ and degree $d$ with $\gcd(n,d)=1$. A generalised Picard sheaf is the direct image on $M$ of the tensor product of a universal bundle on $M\times C$ by the pullback of a vector bundle $E_0$ on $C$. In this paper, we investigate the stability of generalised Picard sheaves and, in the case where these are locally free, their deformations. When $g\ge3$, $n\ge2$ (with some additional restrictions for $g=3,4$) and the rank and degree of $E_0$ are coprime, …
Consider a smooth projective family of complex polarized manifolds with semi-ample canonical sheaf over a quasi-projective manifold $V$. When the associated moduli map $V\to P_h$ from the base to coarse moduli space is quasi-finite, we prove that the generalized big Picard theorem holds for the base manifold $V$: for any projective compactification $Y$ of $V$, any holomorphic map $f:Δ-\{0\}\to V$ from the punctured unit disk to $V$ extends to a holomorphic map of the unit disk $Δ$ into $Y$. This result generalizes our previous work on the Brody hyperbolicity of $V$ (i.e. there are no entire cu…
We study the Brauer class rising from the obstruction to the existence of tautological line bundles on the Picard scheme of curves. We determine the period and index of the Brauer class in certain cases.

As a result of our study of the hyperbolicity of the moduli space of polarized manifold, we give a general big Picard theorem for a holomorphic curve on a log-smooth pair $(X,D)$ such that $W=X\setminus D$ admits a Finsler pseudometric that is strongly negatively curved when pulled back to the curve. We show, by some refinements of the classical Viehweg-Zuo construction, that this latter condition holds for the base space $W$, if nonsingular, of any algebraic family of polarized complex projective manifolds with semi-ample canonical bundles whose induced moduli map $ϕ$ to the moduli space of s…
We study the moduli space F_{2d} of polarised K3 surfaces of degree 2d. We compute all relations between Noether-Lefschetz divisors on these moduli spaces for d up to around 50. This leads to a very concrete description of the rational Picard group of F_{2d}. We show how to determine the coefficients of boundary components of relations in the rational Picard group, giving relations on a (toroidal) compactification of F_{2d}. We draw conclusions from this about the Kodaira dimension of F_{2d}, in many cases confirming earlier results by Gritsenko, Hulek and Sankaran, and in two cases giving a n…
We compute the Picard group of the universal abelian variety over the moduli stack $\mathscr A_{g,n}$ of principally polarized abelian varieties over $\mathbb{C}$ with a symplectic principal level $n$-structure. We then prove that over $\mathbb{C}$ the statement of the Franchetta conjecture holds in a suitable form for $\mathscr A_{g,n}$.
The Witt group of a smooth curve over a real closed field is explicitely calculated. The method uses a comparison theorem between the graded Witt group and the etale cohomology groups. In the second part of the paper, the torsion Picard group of a smooth real curve is also computed. The calculation depends on a new invariant introduced here. We prove that several problems of real algebraic geometry are related to this invariant.
In this paper, we investigate the minimal length of chains of minimal rational curves needed to join two general points on a Fano manifold of Picard number 1. In particular, we give a sharp bound of the length by a fundamental argument. As an application, we compute the length for Fano manifolds of dimension < 8.
In this paper, we will consider the period index problems of elliptic curves and introduce a value called generic index which is closed related to the essential dimension of Picard stacks. In particular, we will use examples to see that usually the period and generic index are different. Our construction is different with Cassel's example.
We construct some complex surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number. These examples arise as fibrations of genus two curves over quaternionic Shimura curves.
For $4 \nmid L$ and $g$ large, we calculate the integral Picard groups of the moduli spaces of curves and principally polarized abelian varieties with level $L$ structures. In particular, we determine the divisibility properties of the standard line bundles over these moduli spaces and we calculate the second integral cohomology group of the level $L$ subgroup of the mapping class group (in a previous paper, the author determined this rationally). This entails calculating the abelianization of the level $L$ subgroup of the mapping class group, generalizing previous results of Perron, Sato, and…
The Picard number of a Fano manifold X obtained by blowing up a curve in a smooth projective variety is known to be at most 5, in any dimension greater than or equal to 4. We show that the Picard number attains to the maximal if and only if X is the blow-up of the projective space whose center consists of two points, the strict transform of the line joining them and a linear subspace or a quadric of codimension 2. This result is obtained as a consequence of a classification of special types of Fano manifolds.
