In this paper, for symplectic and split odd special orthogonal groups, we develop an account of theory on the intersection problem of local Arthur packets. Specifically, following Atobe's reformulation on Mœglin's construction of local Arthur packets, we give a complete set of operators on the construction data, based on which, we provide algorithms and Sage codes to determine whether a given representation is of Arthur type. Furthermore, for any representation $π$ of Arthur type, we give a precise formula for the set $$ Ψ(π)=\{ \text{local Arthur parameter }ψ\ | \ \text{the local Arthur packet } Π_ψ \text{ contains } π\}.$$
Our results have many applications, including the precise counting of tempered representations in any local Arthur packet, specifying and characterizing "the" local Arthur parameter in $Ψ(π)$ for $π$, especially when $π$ belongs to several local Arthur packets but does not belong to any local $L$-packet of Arthur type.
Using exceptional theta correspondences we construct a family of Arthur packets for the exceptional group of type D4, and establish the global Arthur multiplicity formula.
We develop a general procedure to study the combinatorial structure of Arthur packets for $p$-adic quasisplit $Sp(N)$ and $O(N)$ following the works of Mœglin. This allows us to answer many delicate questions concerning the Arthur packets of these groups, for example the size of the packets.
In this paper we prove Vogan's conjecture on local Arthur packets, for Arthur parameters of $p$-adic general linear groups that are irreducible as representations of $W_F \times SL_2(\mathbb{C}) \times SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ - we refer to such parameters as irreducible Arthur parameters. This result shows that these Arthur packets may be characterized by properties of simple perverse sheaves on a moduli space of Langlands parameters.
In [Ar13], Arthur classifies the automorphic discrete spectrum of symplectic groups up to global Arthur packets, based on the theory of endoscopy. It is an interesting and basic question to ask: which global Arthur packets contain no cuspidal automorphic representations? The investigation on this question can be regarded as a further development of the topics originated from the classical theory of singular automorphic forms. The results obtained yield a better understanding of global Arthur packets and of the structure of local unramified components of the cuspidal spectrum, and hence are clo…
In this paper we prove Vogan's conjecture on Arthur packets for general linear groups over $p$-adic fields, building on earlier work. The proof uses a special case of endoscopic lifting, adapted from the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan, where it was articulated for real groups.
We prove a conjecture of the first-named author ([J14]) on the upper bound Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms in Arthur packets of all classical groups over any number field. This conjecture generalizes the global version of the local tempered $L$-packet conjecture of F. Shahidi ([Sh90] and [Sh10]).
We give a survey on Mœglin's construction of representations in the Arthur packets for $p$-adic quasisplit symplectic and orthogonal groups. The emphasis is on comparing Mœglin's parametrization of elements in the Arthur packets with that of Arthur.
Mok and Moeglin-Renard have defined Arthur packets for unitary groups. Their definitions follow Arthur's work on classical groups and rely on harmonic analysis. For real groups there is an alternative definition of Arthur packets due to Adams-Barbasch-Vogan. It relies on sheaf-theoretic techniques instead of harmonic analysis. We prove that these two definitions of Arthur packets are equivalent in the case of real unitary groups.
This paper begins the project of defining Arthur packets of all unipotent representations for the $p$-adic exceptional group $G_2$. Here we treat the most interesting case by defining and computing Arthur packets with component group $S_3$. We also show that the distributions attached to these packets are stable, subject to a hypothesis. This is done using a self-contained microlocal analysis of simple equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of homogeneous cubics in two variables. In forthcoming work we will treat the remaining unipotent representations and their endoscopic classifica…
Let $k$ be a $p$-adic field and let $\mathbf{G}(k)$ be the $k$-points of a connected reductive group, inner to split. The set of Aubert-Zelevinsky duals of the constituents of a tempered L-packet form an Arthur packet for $\mathbf{G}(k)$. In this paper, we give an alternative characterization of such Arthur packets in terms of the wavefront set, proving in some instances a conjecture of Jiang-Liu and Shahidi. Pursuing an analogy with real and complex groups, we define some special unions of Arthur packets which we call \emph{weak} Arthur packets and describe their constituents in terms of thei…
We compute special unipotent Arthur packets for real reductive groups in many cases. We list the cases that lead to incomplete answers, and in those cases, provide a suitable set of representations that could lead to a complete description of the special Arthur packet. In the process of achieving this goal we classify theta forms of a given even complex nilpotent orbit, and find methods to compute the associated varieties of irreducible group representations.
Arthur has conjectured the existence of what are now known as Arthur packets of representations of reductive algebraic groups over local and global fields. In the case of classical groups he subsequently gave a definition of these packets, using local and global methods. For general real groups, an alternative approach to the definition of Arthur packets has been given by Adams-Barbasch-Vogan. This construction is purely local and uses geometric methods. Our main result is that these two definitions agree in the case of real classical groups.
In spirit of Gan-Ichino's work on the Arthur's multiplicity formula for metaplectic groups, we have established the Arthur's multiplicity formula for even orthogonal or unitary groups with Witt index less than or equal to one. In that multiplicity formula, some local packets defined using the stable range theta lifts are involved. In this paper, we prove that at non-Archimedean places, the definition of the local packets involved in that multiplicity formula is independent of the choice of the dual-pairs used in their construction. Moreover, at those places where the groups are quasi-split, we…
In this paper, one proves an idea expressed by Clozel: inside an Arthur's packet, one has the representations in the Langlands' packet inside the Arthur's packet and more tempered representations than these representations
For a generic $L$-parameter of $U(n)\times U(n)$, it is conjectured that there is a unique representation in their associated relevant Vogan $L$-packet which produces the unique Fourier-Jacobi model. We investigated this conjecture for some non-generic $L$-parameters of $U(3)\times U(3)$ and discovered that this conjecture is still true for some non-generic $L$-parameter and false for some non-generic $L$-parameter. In the case when it holds, we specified such representation under the local Langlands correspondence for unitary group.
In this article we propose a geometric description of Arthur packets for $p$-adic groups using vanishing cycles of perverse sheaves. Our approach is inspired by the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan on the Langlands classification of admissible representations of real groups and follows the direction indicated by Vogan in his 1993 paper on the Langlands correspondence. Using vanishing cycles, we introduce and study a functor from the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of certain Langlands parameters to local systems on the regular part of the conormal bundle for …
Let $G=\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{R})$ be the group of real points of a quasi-split connected reductive algebraic group defined over $\mathbb{R}$. Assume furthermore that $G$ is a classical group (symplectic, special orthogonal or unitary). We show that the packets of irreducible unitary cohomological representations defined by Adams and Johnson in 1987 coincide with the ones defined recently by J. Arthur in his work on the classification of the discrete automorphic spectrum of classical groups (C.-P. Mok for unitary groups). For this, we compute the endoscopic transfer of the stable distributions on …
This article is part of a project which consists of investigating Arthur packets for real classical groups. Our goal is to give an explicit description of these packets and to establish the multiplicity one property (which is known to hold for $p$-adic and complex groups). The main result in this paper is a construction of packets from unipotent packets on $c$-Levi factors using cohomological induction. An important tool used in the argument is a statement of commutativity between cohomological induction and spectral endoscopic transfer.
Generalizing the proof -- by Hecht and Schmid -- of Osborne's conjecture we prove an Archimedean (and weaker) version of a theorem of Colette Moeglin. The result we obtain is a precise Archimedean version of the general principle -- stated by the second author -- according to which {\it a local Arthur packet contains the corresponding local $L$-packet and representations which are more tempered.}
We consider a nontempered $A$-parameter $ψ$ of $SO(2n+1, F)$ of a certain type and the base point representation $π$ in the $A$-packet of $ψ$. Let $\hatπ$ be the Aubert involution of $π$. We compute explicitly the Langlands data of $\hatπ$ and the $A$-parameter $\hatψ$ of $\hatπ$. We investigate whether $ψ$ and $\hatψ$ are symmetric. Although symmetry holds for large classes of parameters, it does not hold in general.
In this paper, we give an algorithm to determine all local A-packets containing a given irreducible representation of a p-adic classical group. Especially, we can determine whether a given irreducible representation is of Arthur type or not.
This paper generalizes the GGP conjectures which were earlier formulated for tempered or more generally generic L-packets to Arthur packets, especially for the nongeneric L-packets arising from Arthur parameters. The paper introduces the key notion of a relevant pair of A-parameters which governs the branching laws for $GL_n$ and all classical groups over both local fields and global fields. It plays a role for all the branching problems studied in our earlier work including Bessel models and Fourier-Jacobi models.
We describe explicitly Arthur pac…
We give an explicit construction of Arthur packets for real unitary groups by cohomological and parabolic induction and following an idea communicated to us by P. Trapa, we show that they satisfy the multiplicity one property. In particular, we show the irreducibility of some parabolically induced representations for unitary groups, and use this to give the proof of analogous statements made in our work on Arthur packets of classical groups. Nous donnons une construction explicite des paquets d'Arthur des groupes unitaires réels par induction cohomologique et induction parabolique et en suivan…
We consider the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$ defined over a $p$-adic field $F$, where $p=2$. We prove that every simple supercuspidal representation (in the sense of Gross--Reeder) of $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)$ corresponds to an irreducible $L$-parameter under the local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$ established by Arthur.
In this paper we construct explicitly a square integrable residual automorphic representation of the special orthogonal group $SO_{2n}$, through Eisenstein series. We show that this representation comes from an elliptic Arthur parameter $ψ$ and appears in the space $L^2(SO_{2n}(\mathbb{Q})\backslash SO_{2n}(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}}))$ with multiplicity one. Next, we consider parameters whose Hecke matrices, at the unramified places, have eigenvalues bigger (in absolute value), than those of the parameter constructed before. The main result is, that these parameters cannot be cuspidal. We establ…
In this paper, we reformulate Moeglin's explicit construction of local A-packets of split odd special orthogonal groups and symplectic groups. By this reformulation together with results of the previous paper with Minguez, we can compute the A-packets explicitly. Also, we give a non-vanishing criterion of our parametrization, and an algorithm to compute certain derivatives. Finally, we prove a formula for the Aubert duals of irreducible representations of Arthur type.
In this work, we study the intersection cohomology of Siegel modular varieties. The goal is to express the trace of a Hecke operator composed with a power of the Frobenius endomorphism (at a good place) on this cohomology in terms of the geometric side of Arthur's invariant trace formula for well-chosen test functions. Our main tools are the results of Kottwitz about the contribution of the cohomology with compact support and about the stabilization of the trace formula, Arthur's $L^2$ trace formula and the fixed point formula of the author. We "stabilize" this last formula, ie express it as a…
In [J14], a conjecture was proposed on a relation between the global Arthur parameters and the structure of Fourier coefficients of the automorphic representations in the corresponding global Arthur packets. In this paper, we discuss the recent progress on this conjecture and certain problems which lead to better understanding of Fourier coefficients of automorphic forms. At the end, we extend a useful technical lemma to a few versions, which are more convenient for future applications.
In his monograph (2013) Arthur characterizes the L-packets of quasisplit symplectic groups and orthogonal groups. By extending his work, we characterize the L-packets for the corresponding similitude groups with desired properties. In particular, we show these packets satisfy the conjectural endoscopic character identities.
The set of special unipotent representations of a semisimple Lie group was defined by Barbasch and Vogan. According to predictions of Arthur (established by Adams, Barbasch, and Vogan), this set is an overlapping union of Arthur packets. Each packet gives rise to a canonical virtual representation whose character is stable in the sense of Langlands and Shelstad. But these stable characters seldom span the space of all stable characters of virtual special unipotent representations. Under natural hypotheses, we give a canonical basis of this latter space in terms of rational forms of special pie…
In this paper we gives the Langlands parameters of Langlands' packets of discrete series using the twisted endoscopy as explained by Arthur; this holds for orthogonal, symplectic, unitary and G-Spin groups and gives the most simple proof available. We have assume that the groups are quasi-split but this is just for simplicity. The proof explaines first what is the classification from the representation's theory point of view; this gives the Langlands' packets purely in terms of representation theory. And then using the theory of L-function of Shahidi and the doubling method of Rallis and Piate…
