Weak Arthur packets have long been instrumental in the study of the unitary dual and automorphic spectrum of reductive Lie groups, and were recently introduced in the p-adic setting by Ciubotaru - Mason-Brown - Okada.
For split odd orthogonal and symplectic p-adic groups, we explicitly determine the decomposition of weak Arthur packets into Arthur packets that arise from endoscopic transfer. We establish a characterization of the Arthur packets that partake in such decompositions by means of ramification properties of their constituents.
A notion of weak sphericity for an irreducible representation is introduced: The property of containing fixed vectors with respect to a (not necessarily hyperspecial) maximal compact subgroup. We show that this property determines the weak Arthur packets in a precise sense.
As steps towards this description, we explore alignments between Langlands-type reciprocities for finite and p-adic groups, and their dependence on the geometry of the unipotent locus of the dual Langlands group.
Weak sphericity is shown to match with Lusztig's canonical quotient spaces that feature in the geometric theory for Weyl group representations, while the fine composition of weak Arthur packets is found to be governed by the partition of the unipotent locus into special pieces.
We develop a general procedure to study the combinatorial structure of Arthur packets for $p$-adic quasisplit $Sp(N)$ and $O(N)$ following the works of Mœglin. This allows us to answer many delicate questions concerning the Arthur packets of these groups, for example the size of the packets.
In this paper we prove Vogan's conjecture on local Arthur packets, for Arthur parameters of $p$-adic general linear groups that are irreducible as representations of $W_F \times SL_2(\mathbb{C}) \times SL_2(\mathbb{C})$ - we refer to such parameters as irreducible Arthur parameters. This result shows that these Arthur packets may be characterized by properties of simple perverse sheaves on a moduli space of Langlands parameters.
In this paper we prove Vogan's conjecture on Arthur packets for general linear groups over $p$-adic fields, building on earlier work. The proof uses a special case of endoscopic lifting, adapted from the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan, where it was articulated for real groups.
We give a survey on Mœglin's construction of representations in the Arthur packets for $p$-adic quasisplit symplectic and orthogonal groups. The emphasis is on comparing Mœglin's parametrization of elements in the Arthur packets with that of Arthur.

Let $k$ be a $p$-adic field and let $\mathbf{G}(k)$ be the $k$-points of a connected reductive group, inner to split. The set of Aubert-Zelevinsky duals of the constituents of a tempered L-packet form an Arthur packet for $\mathbf{G}(k)$. In this paper, we give an alternative characterization of such Arthur packets in terms of the wavefront set, proving in some instances a conjecture of Jiang-Liu and Shahidi. Pursuing an analogy with real and complex groups, we define some special unions of Arthur packets which we call \emph{weak} Arthur packets and describe their constituents in terms of thei…
In this article we propose a geometric description of Arthur packets for $p$-adic groups using vanishing cycles of perverse sheaves. Our approach is inspired by the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan on the Langlands classification of admissible representations of real groups and follows the direction indicated by Vogan in his 1993 paper on the Langlands correspondence. Using vanishing cycles, we introduce and study a functor from the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of certain Langlands parameters to local systems on the regular part of the conormal bundle for …
We study the compatibility of Arthur's conjecture for $R$-groups in the restriction of discrete series representations from Levi subgroups of a $p$-adic group to those of its closed subgroup having the same derived group. The compatibility is conditional as it holds under the conjectural local Langlands correspondence in general. This work is applied to several cases and further suggests a uniform way to verify the Arthur's conjecture for $R$-groups in the setting.
We study $R$-groups for $p$-adic inner forms of quasi-split special unitary groups. We prove Arthur's conjecture, the isomorphism between the Knapp-Stein $R$-group and the Langlands-Arthur $R$-group, for quasi-split special unitary groups and their inner forms. Furthermore, we investigate the invariance of the Knapp-Stein $R$-group within $L$-packets and between inner forms. This work is applied to transferring known results in the second-named author's earlier work for quasi-split special unitary groups to their non quasi-split inner forms.
This paper begins the project of defining Arthur packets of all unipotent representations for the $p$-adic exceptional group $G_2$. Here we treat the most interesting case by defining and computing Arthur packets with component group $S_3$. We also show that the distributions attached to these packets are stable, subject to a hypothesis. This is done using a self-contained microlocal analysis of simple equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of homogeneous cubics in two variables. In forthcoming work we will treat the remaining unipotent representations and their endoscopic classifica…
We study the reducibility of parabolically induced representations of non-split inner forms of quasi-split classical groups. The isomorphism of Arthur R-groups, endoscopic R-groups and Knapp-Stein R-groups is established, as well as showing these R-groups are isomorphic to the corresponding ones for the quasi-split form. This shows R-groups are an invariant of the L-packets. The results are applied to classify the elliptic spectrum.
Zelevinsky's classification theory of discrete series of $p$-adic general linear groups has been well known. Mœglin and Tadic gave the same kind of theory for $p$-adic classical groups, which is more complicated due to the occurrence of nontrivial structure of L-packets. Nonetheless, their work is independent of the endoscopic classification theory of Arthur (also Mok in the unitary case), which concerns the structure of L-packets in these cases. So our goal in this paper is to make more explicit the connection between these two very different types of theories. To do so, we reprove the result…
Let $π, π'$ be tempered representations of an affine Hecke algebra with positive parameters. We study their Euler--Poincaré pairing $EP (π,π')$, the alternating sum of the dimensions of the Ext-groups. We show that $EP (π,π')$ can be expressed in a simple formula involving an analytic R-group, analogous to a formula of Arthur in the setting of reductive p-adic groups. Our proof applies equally well to affine Hecke algebras and to reductive groups over nonarchimedean local fields of arbitrary characteristic.
This article is part of a project which consists of investigating Arthur packets for real classical groups. Our goal is to give an explicit description of these packets and to establish the multiplicity one property (which is known to hold for $p$-adic and complex groups). The main result in this paper is a construction of packets from unipotent packets on $c$-Levi factors using cohomological induction. An important tool used in the argument is a statement of commutativity between cohomological induction and spectral endoscopic transfer.
In 1993 David Vogan proposed a basis for the vector space of stable distributions on $p$-adic groups using the microlocal geometry of moduli spaces of Langlands parameters. In the case of general linear groups, distribution characters of irreducible admissible representations, taken up to equivalence, form a basis for the vector space of stable distributions. In this paper we show that these two bases, one putative, cannot be equal. Specifically, we use the Kashiwara-Saito singularity to find a non-Arthur type irreducible admissible representation of $p$-adic $\mathop{GL}_{16}$ whose ABV-packe…
In this paper, we give an algorithm to determine all local A-packets containing a given irreducible representation of a p-adic classical group. Especially, we can determine whether a given irreducible representation is of Arthur type or not.
We study the Knapp-Stein $R$--groups for inner forms of the split group $SL_n(F),$ with $F$ a $p$--adic field of characteristic zero. Thus, we consider the groups $SL_m(D),$ with $D$ a central division algebra over $F$ of dimension $d^2,$ and $m=n/d.$ We use the generalized Jacquet-Langlands correspondence and results of the first named author to describe the zeros of Plancherel measures. Combined with a study of the behavior of the stabilizer of representations by elements of the Weyl group we are able to determine the Knapp-Stein $R$--groups in terms of those for $SL_n(F).$ We show the $R$--…
In this paper, we consider representations of $p$-adic classical groups parabolically induced from the products of shifted Speh representations and unitary representations of Arthur type of good parity. We describe how to compute the socles (the maximal semisimple subrepresentations) of these representations. As a consequence, we can determine whether these representations are reducible or not. In particular, our results produce many unitary representations, which are called complementary series.
We consider the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$ defined over a $p$-adic field $F$, where $p=2$. We prove that every simple supercuspidal representation (in the sense of Gross--Reeder) of $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(F)$ corresponds to an irreducible $L$-parameter under the local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}$ established by Arthur.
We study parabolically induced representations for $GSpin_m(F)$ with $F$ a $p$--adic field of characteristic zero. The Knapp-Stein $R$--groups are described and shown to be elementary two groups. We show the associated cocycle is trivial proving multiplicity one for induced representations. We classify the elliptic tempered spectrum. For $GSpin_{2n+1}(F)$, we describe the Arthur (Endoscopic) $R$--group attached to Langlands parameters, and show these are isomorphic to the corresponding Knapp-Stein $R$--groups.
The goal of this paper is to remove the irreducibility hypothesis in a theorem of Richard Taylor describing the image of complex conjugations by $p$-adic Galois representations associated with regular, algebraic, essentially self-dual, cuspidal automorphic representations of $\GL_{2n+1}$ over a totally real number field $F$. We also extend it to the case of representations of $\GL_{2n}/F$ whose multiplicative character is "odd". We use a $p$-adic deformation argument, more precisely we prove that on the eigenvarieties for symplectic and even orthogonal groups, there are "many" points correspon…
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a split algebrac group of type $E_n$ defined over a $p$-adic field. This group contains a dual pair $G \times G'$ where one of the groups is of type $G_2$. The minimal representation of $\mathbf{G}$, when restricted to the dual pair, gives a correspondence of representations of the two groups in the dual pair. We prove a matching of spherical Hecke algebras of $G$ and $G'$, when acting on the minimal representation. This implies that the correspondence is functorial, in the sense of Arthur and Langlands, for spherical representations.
Let G be a group SO(2n+1) defined over a p-adic field. We compute the wave front set of the anti-tempered irreducible representations of G(F) which are of unipotent reduction. It is the orthogonal orbit dual to the symplectic orbit appearing in the Arthur's parametrization of the representation.
We prove one direction of a recently posed conjecture by Gan-Gross-Prasad, which predicts the branching laws that govern restriction from p-adic $GL_n$ to $GL_{n-1}$ of irreducible smooth representations within the Arthur-type class. We extend this prediction to the full class of unitarizable representations, by exhibiting a combinatorial relation that must be satisfied for any pair of irreducible representations, in which one appears as a quotient of the restriction of the other. We settle the full conjecture for the cases in which either one of the representations in the pair is generic. The…
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be an unramified quasi-split unitary group over a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. The goal of this paper is to describe the supercuspidal representations within certain L-packets of $\mathbf{G}$, which are classified by Arthur and Mok using the theory of endoscopy. The description is given in terms of the cuspidal types constructed by Bushnell-Kutzko and Stevens. As a starting example, we require the parameters of our packets to satisfy certain regularity conditions, such that these packets consist of very cuspidal representations in the sense of Adler and Reeder.…
