The Adams conjecture predicts that the local theta correspondence should respect Arthur packets. In this paper, we revisit the Adams conjecture for the symplectic--even orthogonal dual pair. Our results provide a precise description of all situations in which the conjecture holds.
In spirit of Gan-Ichino's work on the Arthur's multiplicity formula for metaplectic groups, we have established the Arthur's multiplicity formula for even orthogonal or unitary groups with Witt index less than or equal to one. In that multiplicity formula, some local packets defined using the stable range theta lifts are involved. In this paper, we prove that at non-Archimedean places, the definition of the local packets involved in that multiplicity formula is independent of the choice of the dual-pairs used in their construction. Moreover, at those places where the groups are quasi-split, we…
Mok and Moeglin-Renard have defined Arthur packets for unitary groups. Their definitions follow Arthur's work on classical groups and rely on harmonic analysis. For real groups there is an alternative definition of Arthur packets due to Adams-Barbasch-Vogan. It relies on sheaf-theoretic techniques instead of harmonic analysis. We prove that these two definitions of Arthur packets are equivalent in the case of real unitary groups.
We study a new lifting of automorphic representations using the theta representation $Θ$ on the $4$-fold cover of the symplectic group, $\overline{\mathrm{Sp}}_{2r}(\mathbb{A})$. This lifting produces the first examples of CAP representations on higher-degree metaplectic covering groups. Central to our analysis is the identification of the maximal nilpotent orbit associated to $Θ$. We conjecture a natural extension of Arthur's parameterization of the discrete spectrum to $\overline{\mathrm{Sp}}_{2r}(\mathbb{A})$. Assuming this, we compute the effect of our lift on Arthur parameters and show th…
Arthur has conjectured the existence of what are now known as Arthur packets of representations of reductive algebraic groups over local and global fields. In the case of classical groups he subsequently gave a definition of these packets, using local and global methods. For general real groups, an alternative approach to the definition of Arthur packets has been given by Adams-Barbasch-Vogan. This construction is purely local and uses geometric methods. Our main result is that these two definitions agree in the case of real classical groups.
We compute special unipotent Arthur packets for real reductive groups in many cases. We list the cases that lead to incomplete answers, and in those cases, provide a suitable set of representations that could lead to a complete description of the special Arthur packet. In the process of achieving this goal we classify theta forms of a given even complex nilpotent orbit, and find methods to compute the associated varieties of irreducible group representations.
Using exceptional theta correspondences we construct a family of Arthur packets for the exceptional group of type D4, and establish the global Arthur multiplicity formula.
In this paper we prove Vogan's conjecture on Arthur packets for general linear groups over $p$-adic fields, building on earlier work. The proof uses a special case of endoscopic lifting, adapted from the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan, where it was articulated for real groups.
The first half of this article is expository -- I will review, with examples, the main statements of the Langlands classification and Arthur's conjectures for real reductive groups as formulated by Adams, Barbasch, and Vogan. In the second half, I will turn my attention to the Orbit Method, a conjectural scheme for classifying irreducible unitary representations of a real reductive group. I will give a definition of the Orbit Method in the case when the group is complex. The main input is the theory of unipotent ideals and Harish-Chandra bimodules, developed in arXiv:2108.03453. I will show th…
Using theta correspondence, we obtain a classification of irreducible representations of an arbitrary even orthogonal group (i.e. the local Langlands correspondence) by deducing it from the local Langlands correspondence for symplectic groups due to Arthur. Moreover,we show that our classifications coincide with the local Langlands correspondence established by Arthur and formulated precisely by Atobe-Gan for quasi-split even orthogonal groups.
Let $G=\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{R})$ be the group of real points of a quasi-split connected reductive algebraic group defined over $\mathbb{R}$. Assume furthermore that $G$ is a classical group (symplectic, special orthogonal or unitary). We show that the packets of irreducible unitary cohomological representations defined by Adams and Johnson in 1987 coincide with the ones defined recently by J. Arthur in his work on the classification of the discrete automorphic spectrum of classical groups (C.-P. Mok for unitary groups). For this, we compute the endoscopic transfer of the stable distributions on …
In this article we propose a geometric description of Arthur packets for $p$-adic groups using vanishing cycles of perverse sheaves. Our approach is inspired by the 1992 book by Adams, Barbasch and Vogan on the Langlands classification of admissible representations of real groups and follows the direction indicated by Vogan in his 1993 paper on the Langlands correspondence. Using vanishing cycles, we introduce and study a functor from the category of equivariant perverse sheaves on the moduli space of certain Langlands parameters to local systems on the regular part of the conormal bundle for …
The set of special unipotent representations of a semisimple Lie group was defined by Barbasch and Vogan. According to predictions of Arthur (established by Adams, Barbasch, and Vogan), this set is an overlapping union of Arthur packets. Each packet gives rise to a canonical virtual representation whose character is stable in the sense of Langlands and Shelstad. But these stable characters seldom span the space of all stable characters of virtual special unipotent representations. Under natural hypotheses, we give a canonical basis of this latter space in terms of rational forms of special pie…
S.-Y. Pan decomposes the uniform projection of the Weil representation of a finite symplectic-odd orthogonal dual pair, in terms of Deligne-Lusztig virtual characters, assuming that the order of the finite field is large enough. In this paper we use Pan's decomposition to study the theta correspondence for this kind of dual pairs, following the approach of Adams-Moy and Aubert-Michel-Rouquier. Our results give the theta correspondence between unipotent representations and certain quadratic unipotent representations.
This paper deals with the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs of type II over a non Archimedean field $F$ of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. First we construct and study the geometric version of the invariants of the Weil representation of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras. In the particular case of $(GL_1, GL_m)$ we give a complete geometric description of the corresponding category. The second part of the paper deals with geometric local Langlands functoriality at the Iwahori level in a general setting. Giv…
We prove the recent conjectures of Adams-Vogan and D. Prasad on the behavior of the local Langlands correspondence with respect to taking the contragredient of a representation. The proof holds for tempered representations of quasi-split real K-groups and quasi-split p-adic classical groups (in the sense of Arthur). We also prove a formula for the behavior of the local Langlands correspondence for these groups with respect to changes of the Whittaker data.
The theta correspondence has been an important tool in studying cycles in locally symmetric spaces of orthogonal type. We generalize the Kudla-Millson relation between intersection numbers of cycles and Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms to the case where the cycles have local coefficients. Now the generating series of the cycles give rise to vector-valued Siegel modular forms. The underlying correspondence between the highest weights of the orthogonal and the symplectic group coincides with the one obtained by Adams for which we provide a geometric interpretation.
