Let $Y_{1}, \ldots, Y_{q}$ be closed subschemes which are located in $\ell$-subgeneral position with index $κ$ in a complex projective variety $X$ of dimension $n.$ Let $A$ be an ample Cartier divisor on $X.$ We obtain that if a holomorphic curve $f:\mathbb C \to X$ is Zariski-dense, then for every $ε>0,$ \begin{eqnarray*} \sum^{q}_{j=1}ε_{Y_{j}}(A)m_{f}(r,Y_{j})\leq_{exc} \left(\frac{(\ell-n+κ)(n+1)}κ+ε\right)T_{f,A}(r). \end{eqnarray*}This generalizes the second main theorems for general position case due to Heier-Levin [AM J. Math. 143(2021), no. 1, 213-226] and subgeneral position case due to He-Ru [J. Number Theory 229(2021), 125-141]. In particular, whenever all the $Y_j$ are reduced to Cartier divisors, we also give a second main theorem with the distributive constant. The corresponding Schmidt's subspace theorem for closed subschemes in Diophantine approximation is also given.
In this paper, we extend the recent theorem of G. Heier and A. Levin [arXiv:1712.02456] on the generalization of Schmidt's subspace theorem and Cartan's Second Main Theorem in Nevanlinna theory to closed subschemes located in $l$-subgeneral position, using the generic linear combination technique due to Quang.
We prove a generalized version of Schmidt's subspace theorem for closed subschemes in general position in terms of suitably defined Seshadri constants with respect to a fixed ample divisor. Our proof builds on previous work by Evertse and Ferretti, Corvaja and Zannier, and others, and uses standard techniques from algebraic geometry such as notions of positivity, blowing-ups and direct image sheaves. As an application, we recover a higher-dimensional Diophantine approximation theorem of K.F. Roth-type due to D. McKinnon and M. Roth with a significantly shortened proof, while simultaneously ext…
In an earlier paper we showed that we can improve results by Emmy Noether and Alexander Ostrowski concerning the reducibility modulo p of absolutely irreducible polynomials with integer coefficients by giving the problem a geometric turn and using an arithmetic Bezout theorem. This paper is a generalization, where we show that combining the methods of that paper with the theory of Chow forms leads to similar results for flat, equidimensional, integral, closed subschemes of arbitrary codimension in a projective space over the ring of rational integers.
In this paper, we obtain some new results on closed subschemes. Specially, we define natural addition and multiplication on the closed subschemes of a scheme. It is shown that "the multiplication" precisely coincides with the well known notion of "the scheme-theoretic intersection". Dually, "the addition" coincides with "the scheme-theoretic union". It is also proved that these structures naturally provide contravariant functors from the category of schemes to the category of commutative monoids.
We use the "closed point sieve" to prove a variant of a Bertini theorem over finite fields. Specifically, given a smooth quasi-projective subscheme X of P^n of dimension m over F_q, and a closed subscheme Z in P^n such that Z intersect X is smooth of dimension l, we compute the fraction of homogeneous polynomials vanishing on Z that cut out a smooth subvariety of X. The fraction is positive if m>2l.
Using the notions of open/closed subtopoi of SGA, we define a notion of cohomology with support in a closed subscheme on the overconvergent site, and show that this agrees with the classic notion of rigid cohomology support in a closed subscheme.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field. Fix integers $n$ and $b$ with $n\geq 3$ and $1\leq b\leq n-1.$ Let $T^d_k$ be the moduli space of hypersurfaces $[F]$ in $\mathbb{P}^n_k$ of degree $l$ whose singular locus contains a subscheme of dimension $b$ with Hilbert polynomial among the Hilbert polynomials of $b$-dimensional integral closed subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We prove that when $l$ is sufficiently large and $2\leq d\leq \frac{l+1}{2},$ any irreducible component $Z$ of $T^d_k$ satisfies $Z=T^1_k$ or $\dim Z<\dim T^1_k.$
In section 8.3 of our paper "Duality and Flat Base Change on Formal Schemes" (http://arXiv.org/abs/alg-geom/9708006) some important results concerning localization of, and preservation of coherence by, basic duality functors, were based on the false statement that any closed formal subscheme of an open subscheme of the completion P of a relative projective space is an open subscheme of a closed formal subscheme of P. In this note, the said results are provided with solid foundations.
We show that a closed subscheme of a given locally noetherian scheme can be constructed by prescribing it germs at all points of the ambient scheme in a manner consistent with specialization of points, provided the resulting set of all associated points of all the germs is locally finite. More generally, we prove a similar result for constructing a coherent subsheaf of a coherent sheaf by prescribing its stalks at all points in a manner consistent with specializations of points, again provided the set of all associated points of all the corresponding local quotients is locally finite. On any l…
We give a variant of Artin algebraization along closed subschemes and closed substacks. Our main application is the existence of étale, smooth, or syntomic neighborhoods of closed subschemes and closed substacks. In particular, we prove local structure theorems for stacks and their derived counterparts and the existence of henselizations along linearly fundamental closed substacks. These results establish the existence of Ferrand pushouts, which answers positively a question of Temkin-Tyomkin.
Using the method of Coandă and Trautmann (2006), we give a simple proof of the following theorem due to Tyurin (1976) in the smooth case: if a vector bundle $E$ on a $c$-codimensional locally Cohen-Macaulay closed subscheme $X$ of the projective space $P^n$ extends to a vector bundle $F$ on a similar closed subscheme $Y$ of $P^N$, for every $N > n$, then $E$ is the restriction to $X$ of a direct sum of line bundles on $P^n$. Using the same method, we also provide a proof of the Babylonian tower theorem for locally complete intersection subschemes of projective spaces.
We prove some $\ell$-independence results on local constancy of étale cohomology of rigid analytic varieties. As a result, we show that a closed subscheme of a proper scheme over an algebraically closed complete non-archimedean field has a small open neighborhood in the analytic topology such that, for every prime number $\ell$ different from the residue characteristic, the closed subscheme and the open neighborhood have the same étale cohomology with $\mathbb Z/\ell \mathbb Z$-coefficients. The existence of such an open neighborhood for each $\ell$ was proved by Huber. A key ingredient in the…
We provide a generalization of the algorithm of Eklund-Jost-Peterson for computing Segre classes of closed subschemes of projective k-space. The algorithm is here generalized to computing the Segre classes of closed subschemes of smooth projective toric varieties.
Let C be a projective Gorenstein curve over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A generalized linear system on C is a pair (I,f) consisting of a torsion-free, rank-1 sheaf I on C and a map of vector spaces f to the space of global sections of I. If the system is nondegenerate on every irreducible component of C, we associate to it a 0-cycle W, its Weierstrass cycle. Then we show that for each one-parameter family of curves C(t) degenerating to C, and each family of linear systems (L(t),f(t)) along C(t), with L(t) invertible, degenerating to (I,f), the corresponding Weierstrass d…
By defining a fat point subscheme of $P^2$ to be a 0-dimensional subscheme defined by a sheaf of integrally closed ideals one extends the notion of fat point subschemes to allow infinitely near points. With this notion of fat points, this preprint determines the number of generators in each degree in a minimal homogeneous set of generators for the homogeneous ideal defining any fat point subscheme supported at points of any plane conic, smooth or not. Special cases for points on a cubic are also studied. All work is over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic.
Let S be a smooth projective surface, and consider the following two subvarieties of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing closed subschemes of S of length n: A = {subschemes with support in a fixed point of S} B = {subschemes with support in one (variable) point of S} A and B have complementary dimensions in the Hilbert scheme. We prove that the intersection number [A].[B] = n(-1)^(n-1), answering a question by H. Nakajima.
We explore the relationship between limit linear series and fibers of Abel maps in the case of curves with two smooth components glued at a single node. To an r-dimensional limit linear series satisfying a certain exactness property (weaker than the refinedness property of Eisenbud and Harris) we associate a closed subscheme of the appropriate fiber of the Abel map. We then describe this closed subscheme explicitly, computing its Hilbert polynomial and showing that it is Cohen-Macaulay of pure dimension r. We show that this construction is also compatible with one-parameter smoothings.
We present a proof of embedded desingularization for closed subschemes which does not make use of Hilbert-Samuel function and avoids Hironaka's notion of normal flatness. This proof, already sketched in [A course on constructive desingularization and equivariance. In {\em Resolution of singularities (Obergurgl, 1997)}, vol. 181 {\em Progr. Math.}, Birkhäuser, 2000.] page 224, is done by showing that desingularization of a closed subscheme $X$, in a smooth sheme W, is achieved by taking an algorithmic principalization for the ideal $I(X)$, associated to the embedded scheme $X$.
The Hilbert scheme $\mathbf{Hilb}_{p(t)}^{n}$ parametrizes closed subschemes and families of closed subschemes in the projective space $\mathbb{P}^n$ with a fixed Hilbert polynomial $p(t)$. It is classically realized as a closed subscheme of a Grassmannian or a product of Grassmannians. In this paper we consider schemes over a field $k$ of characteristic zero and we present a new proof of the existence of the Hilbert scheme as a subscheme of the Grassmannian $\mathbf{Gr}_{p(r)}^{N(r)}$, where $N(r)= h^0 (\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^n}(r))$. Moreover, we exhibit explicit equations defining it in th…
Closed subschemes in projective space with a fixed Hilbert polynomial are parametrized by a Hilbert scheme. We classify the smooth ones. We identify numerical conditions on a polynomial that completely determine when the Hilbert scheme is smooth. We also reinterpret these smooth Hilbert schemes as generalized partial flag varieties and describe the subschemes being parametrized.
We describe the closed strata that defines certain Quot schemes as closed subschemes in Grassmannians. The Quot schemes we consider are those parametrizing finite length $n$ quotient sheaves of the free, rank $p$ sheaf on projective $r$-space.
In this paper, we study the Waldschmidt constant of a generalized fat point subscheme $Z=m_1p_1+\cdots+m_rp_r$ of $\mathbb{P}^2$, where $p_1,\cdots,p_r$ are essentially distinct points on $\mathbb{P}^2$, satisfying the proximity inequalities. Furthermore, we prove its lower semi-continuity for $r\le 8$. Using this property, we also calculate the Waldschmidt constants of the fat point subschemes $Z=p_1+\cdots+p_5$ giving weak del Pezzo surfaces of degree 4.
Let X be a flexible variety of F be an isomorphism of closed one-dimensional subschemes of $X$. We develop criteria which guarantee that F extends to au automorphism of X.
In this paper, we use (bi)semicosimplicial language to study the classical problem of infinitesimal deformations of a closed subscheme in a fixed smooth variety, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. In particular, we give an explicit description of the differential graded Lie algebra controlling this problem.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the closed subschemes of moduli spaces corresponding to projective varieties which admit an effective action by a given finite group $G$. To achieve this, we introduce the moduli functor $\mathsf{M}^G_h$ of $G$-marked Gorenstein canonical models with Hilbert polynomial $h$, and prove the existence of $\mathfrak{M}_h[G]$, the coarse moduli scheme for $\mathsf{M}^G_h$. Then we show that $\mathfrak{M}_h[G]$ has a proper and finite morphism onto $\mathfrak{M}_h$ so that its image $\mathfrak{M}_h(G)$ is a closed subscheme. In the end we obtain the canonical r…
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. The question of irreducibility of the punctual Hilbert scheme Hilb_d P^n and its Gorenstein locus for various d was studied in [CEVV8, CN9, CN10, CN11]. In this short paper we prove that the subschemes corresponding to the Gorenstein algebras having Hilbert function (1,5,5,1) are smoothable i.e. lie in the closure of the locus of smooth subschemes. Among the Gorenstein algebras of length 12 the smoothability of algebras having such Hilbert function seems to be the most inapproachable using non-direct tools e.g. structural theorems.
In this paper, we study the interplay between tropical and analytic geometry for closed subschemes of toric varieties. Let $K$ be a complete non-Archimedean field, and let $X$ be a closed subscheme of a toric variety over $K$. We define the tropical skeleton of $X$ as the subset of the associated Berkovich space $X^{\rm an}$ which collects all Shilov boundary points in the fibers of the Kajiwara--Payne tropicalization map. We develop polyhedral criteria for limit points to belong to the tropical skeleton, and for the tropical skeleton to be closed. We apply the limit point criteria to the ques…

Let $S$ be an irreducible smooth projective surface defined over an algebraically closed field $k$. For a positive integer $d$, let ${\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the zero-dimensional subschemes of $S$ of length $d$. For a vector bundle $E$ on $S$, let ${\mathcal H}(E)\, \longrightarrow\, {\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ be its Fourier--Mukai transform constructed using the structure sheaf of the universal subscheme of $S\times {\rm Hilb}^d(S)$ as the kernel. We prove that two vector bundles $E$ and $F$ on $S$ are isomorphic if the vector bundles ${\mathcal H}(E)$ and ${\mathcal H}(F)$ …
We introduce the tropicalization of closed subschemes of a torus defined over a higher dimensional local field. We study the basic invariants of such tropicalizations. This is a generalization of the results of Einslieder, Kapranov, Lind, Speyer and Sturmfels to higher local fields.
Let $Z$ be a closed subscheme of a smooth complex projective complete intersection variety $Y\subseteq \Ps^N$, with $dim Y=2r+1\geq 3$. We describe the Néron-Severi group $NS_r(X)$ of a general smooth hypersurface $X\subset Y$ of sufficiently large degree containing $Z$.
Let k be an algebraically closed field and let HaG(d) be the open locus inside H(d) (the Hilbert scheme of 0-dimensional length d subschemes of the projective (d-2)-space over k) corresponding to arithmetically Gorenstein subschemes. We prove the irreducibility and characterize the singularities of HaG(6). In order to achieve these results we also classify all Artinian, Gorenstein, not necessarily graded, k-algebras up to degree 6. Moreover we describe the loci in HaG(6) obtained via some geometric construction. Finally we prove the obstructedness of some families of points in HaG(d) for each …
Let $R$ be a discrete valuation ring with fraction field $K$ and with algebraically closed residue field of positive characteristic $p$. Let $X$ be a smooth fibered surface over $R$ with geometrically connected fibers endowed with a section $x\in X(R)$. Let $G$ be a finite solvable $K$-group scheme and assume that either $|G|=p^n$ or $G$ has a normal series of length 2. We prove that every quotient pointed $G$-torsor over the generic fiber $X_η$ of $X$ can be extended to a torsor over $X$ after eventually extending scalars and after eventually blowing up $X$ at a closed subscheme of its specia…
Let $p$ be a prime. Let $n\in\mathbb N-\{0\}$. Let $\mathcal C$ be an $F^n$-crystal over a locally noetherian $\mathbb F_p$-scheme $S$. Let $(a,b)\in\mathbb N^2$. We show that the reduced locally closed subscheme of $S$ whose points are exactly those $x\in S$ such that $(a,b)$ is a break point of the Newton polygon of the fiber $\mathcal C_x$ of $\mathcal C$ at $x$ is pure in $S$, i.e., it is an affine $S$-scheme. This result refines and reobtains previous results of de Jong--Oort, Vasiu, and Yang. As an application, we show that for all $m\in \mathbb N$ the reduced locally closed subscheme of…
Let $Z$ be a closed subscheme of a smooth complex projective variety $Y\subseteq \Ps^N$, with $\dim\,Y=2r+1\geq 3$. We describe the intermediate Néron-Severi group (i.e. the image of the cycle map $A_r(X)\to H_{2r}(X;\mathbb{Z})$) of a general smooth hypersurface $X\subset Y$ of sufficiently large degree containing $Z$.
Let $Y_{1},\dots,Y_{l}$ be smooth irreducible projective curves and let $Y$ be its disjoint union. Given a semisimple reductive algebraic group $G$ and a faithful representation $ρ:G\hookrightarrow \textrm{SL}(V)$ we construct a projective moduli space of $(\underlineκ,δ)$-(semi)stable singular principal $G$-bundles with generalized parabolic structure of type $\underline{e}$. In case $Y$ is the normalization of a connected and reducible projective nodal curve $X$, there is a closed subscheme coarsely representing the subfunctor corresponding to descending bundles. We prove that the descent op…
Let X be a smooth complex variety and Y be a closed subvariety of X, or more generally, a closed subscheme of X. We are interested in invariants attached to the singularities of the pair (X, Y). We discuss various methods to construct such invariants, coming from the theory of multiplier ideals, D-modules, the geometry of the space of arcs and characteristic p techniques. We present several applications of these invariants to algebra, higher dimensional birational geometry and to singularities.
A toric polyhedron is a reduced closed subscheme of a toric variety that are partial unions of the orbits of the torus action. We prove vanishing theorems for toric polyhedra. We also give a proof of the $E_1$-degeneration of Hodge to de Rham type spectral sequence for toric polyhedra in any characteristic. Finally, we give a very powerful extension theorem for ample line bundles.
Let Hilb^p be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the closed subschemes of P^n with Hilbert polynomial p \in Q[t] over a field K of characteristic zero. By bounding below the cohomological Hilbert functions of the points of Hilb^p we define locally closed subspaces of the Hilbert scheme. The aim of this thesis is to show that some of these subspaces are connected. For this we exploit the ideals constructed by D. Mall. It turns out that these ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and that their initial ideals and their generic initial ideals coincide for any admissible term order.
Our main theorem characterizes the complete intersections of codimension 2 in a projective space of dimension 3 or more over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 as the subcanonical and self-linked subschemes. In order to prove this theorem, we'll prove the Gherardelli linkage theorem, which asserts that a partial intersection of two hypersurfaces is subcanonical if and only if its residual intersection is, scheme-theoretically, the intersection of the two hypersurfaces with a third.
Let Hilb^p be the Hilbert scheme parametrizing the closed subschemes of P^n with Hilbert polynomial p\in Q[t] over a field K of characteristic zero. By bounding below the cohomological Hilbert functions of the points of Hilb^p we define locally closed subspaces of the Hilbert scheme. The aim of this paper is to show that some of these subspaces are connected. For this we exploit the edge ideals constructed by D. Mall. It turns out that these ideals are sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and that their initial ideals with respect to the reverse lexicographic term order are generic initial ideals.
Let X and X' be closed subschemes of an algebraic torus T over a non-archimedean field. We prove the rational equivalence as tropical cycles, in the sense of Henning Meyer's graduate thesis, between the tropicalization of the intersection product of X and X' and the stable intersection of trop(X) and trop(X'), when restricted to (the inverse image under the tropicalization map of) a connected component C of the intersection of trop(X) and trop(X'). This requires possibly passing to a (partial) compactification of T with respect to a suitable fan. We define the compactified stable intersection …
Let X be a closed subscheme and let HF(X,-) and hp(X,-) denote, respectively, the Hilbert function and the Hilbert polynomial of X. We say that X has bipolynomial Hilbert function if HF(X,d)=min{hp(P^n,d),hp(X,d)} for every non-negative integer d. We show that if X consists of a plane and generic lines, then X has bipolynomial Hilbert function. We also conjecture that generic configurations of non-intersecting linear spaces have bipolynomial Hilbert function.
A closed subscheme of codimension two $T \subset P^2$ is a quasi complete intersection (q.c.i.) of type $(a,b,c)$ if there exists a surjective morphism $\mathcal{O} (-a) \oplus \mathcal{O} (-b) \oplus \mathcal{O} (-c) \to \mathcal{I} _T$. We give bounds on deg$(T)$ in function of $a,b,c$ and $r$, the least degree of a syzygy between the three polynomials defining the q.c.i. As a by-product we recover a theorem of du Plessis-Wall on the global Tjurina number of plane curves and some other related results.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and let $H_G(d,N)$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $H(d,N)$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes of degree $d$ in the projective N-space. We proved in a previous paper that $H_G(d,N)$ is irreducible for $d\le9$ and $N\ge1$. In the present paper we prove that also $H_G(10,N)$ is irreducible for each $N\ge1$, giving also a complete description of its singular locus.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and let $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $\Hilb_{d}(\p{N})$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes. We prove that $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ is irreducible for $d\le9$, we characterize geometrically its singularities for $d\le 8$ and we give some results about them when $d=9$ which give some evidence to a conjecture on the nature of the singular points in $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$.
Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, and let $H$ denote the Hilbert scheme of $m$ points of affine n-space $A^n$. An elementary component $E$ of $H$ is an irreducible component such that every $K$-point $[I]$ in $E$ represents a length-$m$ closed subscheme Spec$(K[x_1,\dots,x_n]/I)$ of $A^n$ that is supported at one point. Iarrobino and Emsalem gave the first explicit examples (with $m > 1$) of elementary components in ["Some zero-dimensional generic singularities: Finite algebras having small tangent space", Comp. Math. 36 (1978), pp. 145-188]; in their examples, the …
Let $X \subset Y$ be closed (possibly singular) subschemes of a smooth projective toric variety $T$. We show how to compute the Segre class $s(X,Y)$ as a class in the Chow group of $T$. Building on this, we give effective methods to compute intersection products in projective varieties, to determine algebraic multiplicity without working in local rings, and to test pairwise containment of subvarieties of $T$. Our methods may be implemented without using Groebner bases; in particular any algorithm to compute the number of solutions of a zero-dimensional polynomial system may be used.
We work with semi-algebraic functions on arbitrary real closed fields. We generalize the notion of critical values and prove a Sard type theorem in our framework.
