Let X be a smooth complex variety and Y be a closed subvariety of X, or more generally, a closed subscheme of X. We are interested in invariants attached to the singularities of the pair (X, Y). We discuss various methods to construct such invariants, coming from the theory of multiplier ideals, D-modules, the geometry of the space of arcs and characteristic p techniques. We present several applications of these invariants to algebra, higher dimensional birational geometry and to singularities.
We present an intersection-theoretical approach to the invariants of plane curve singularities $μ$, $δ$, $r$ related by the Milnor formula $2δ=μ+r-1$. Using Newton transformations we give formulae for $μ$, $δ$, $r$ which imply planar versions of well-known theorems on nondegenerate singularities.
It was conjectured that multiplicity of a singularity is bi-Lipschitz invariant. We disprove this conjecture, constructing examples of bi-Lipschitz equivalent complex algebraic singularities with different values of multiplicity.
We construct a local invariant for resolution of singularities of 2-dimensional excellent Noetherian schemes with boundary. We prove that the invariant strictly decreases at every step of the algorithm of Cossart, Jannsen and Saito.
In [7], Donovan and Wemyss introduced the contraction algebra of flop- ping curves in 3-folds. When the flopping curve is smooth and irreducible, we prove that the contraction algebra together with its A_\infty-structure recovers various invariants associated to the underlying singularity and its small resolution, including the derived category of singularities and the genus zero Gopakuma-Vafa invariants.
This article, based on the talk given by one of the authors at the Pierrettefest in Castro Urdiales in June 2008, is an overview of a number of recent results on the polar invariants of plane curve singularities.
This paper deals with a complete invariant $R_X$ for cyclic quotient surface singularities. This invariant appears in the Riemann Roch and Numerical Adjunction Formulas for normal surface singularities. Our goal is to give an explicit formula for $R_X$ based on the numerical information of $X$, that is, $d$ and $q$ as in $X=X(d;1,q)$. In the process, the space of curvettes and generic curves is explicitly described. We also define and describe other invariants of curves in $X$ such as the LR-logarithmic eigenmodules, $δ$-invariants, and their Milnor and Newton numbers.
This is Part II of the series of our papers under the title "Toward resolution of singularities over a field of positive characteristic (The Idealistic Filtration Program)". See http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0607009 for Part I.
Greuel, Lossen and Shustin gave a general sufficient numerical condition for the T-smoothness (smoothness and expected dimension) of equisingular families of plane curves. This condition involves a new invariant γfor plane curve singularities, and it is conjectured to be asymptotically proper. In math.AG/0308247, similar sufficient numerical conditions are obtained for the T-smoothness of equisingular families on various classes surfaces. These conditions involve a series of invariants γ_a, 0 <= a <= 1, with γ_1=γ. In the present paper we compute (respectively give bounds for) these invariants…
In this paper, we study polar quotients and Łojasiewicz exponents of plane curve singularities, which are {\em not necessarily reduced}. We first show that the polar quotients is a topological invariant. We next prove that the Łojasiewicz gradient exponent can be computed in terms of the polar quotients, and so it is also a topological invariant. As an application, we give effective estimates of the Łojasiewicz exponents in the gradient and classical inequalities of polynomials in two (real or complex) variables.
The objective of this paper is to discuss invariants of singularities of algebraic schemes over fields of positive characteristic, and to show how they yield the simplification of singularities. We focus here on invariants which arise in an inductive manner, namely by successive elimination of variables. When applied to hypersurface singularities they lead us to a refinement of the notion of multiplicity. The main theorem proves that, under some numerical conditions expressed by these invariants, singularities can be simplified by blowups at centers prescribed by this refinement.
We show that any union of slc strata of a Fano log pair with semi-log canonical singularities is simply connected. In particular, Fano log pairs with semi-log canonical singularities are simply connected, which confirms a conjecture of the first author.
In this survey on local additive invariants of real and complex definable singular germs we systematically present classical or more recent invariants of different nature as emerging from a tame degeneracy principle. For this goal, we associate to a given singular germ a specific deformation family whose geometry degenerates in such a way that it eventually gives rise to a list of invariants attached to this germ. Complex analytic invariants, real curvature invariants and motivic type invariants are encompassed under this point of view. We then explain how all these invariants are related to e…
In this paper, we extract natural invariants of a singularity by using the Deligne weight filtration on the cohomology of an exceptional fibre of a resolution, and also on the intersection cohomology of the link. Our primary goal is to study and give natural bounds on the weights in terms of direct images of differential forms. These bounds can be made explicit for various standard classes such as rational, isolated normal Cohen-Macaulay and toroidal singularities, and lead to strong restrictions on the topology of these singularities. A secondary goal of this paper is to make the weight filtr…
This article is motivated by the original Casson invariant regarded as an integral lifting of the Rochlin invariant. We aim to defining an integral lifting of the Adams e-invariant of stably framed 3-manifolds, perhaps endowed with some additional structure. We succeed in doing so for manifolds which are links of normal complex Gorenstein smoothable singularities. These manifolds are naturally equipped with a canonical $\SU$-frame. To start we notice that the set of homotopy classes of $\SU$-frames on the stable tangent bundle of every closed oriented 3-manifold is canonically a $\mathbb Z$-to…

Mather and Yau showed that an isolated complex hypersurface singularity is completely determined by its moduli algebra. It is shown, for the simple elliptic singularities, how to construct continuous invariants from the moduli algebras and, hence, associate invariants to the singularities themselves.
In this paper we extend the concept of Milnor fiber and Milnor number of a curve singularity allowing the ambient space to be a quotient surface singularity. A generalization of the local δ-invariant is defined and described in terms of a Q-resolution of the curve singularity. In particular, when applied to the classical case (the ambient space is a smooth surface) one obtains a formula for the classical δ-invariant in terms of a Q-resolution, which simplifies considerably effective computations. All these tools will finally allow for an explicit description of the genus formula of a curve def…
We recover the Newton diagram (modulo a natural ambiguity) from the link for any surface hypersurface singularity with non-degenerate Newton principal part whose link is a rational homology sphere. As a corollary, we show that the link determines the embedded topological type, the Milnor fibration, and the multiplicity of such a germ. This proves (even a stronger version of) Zariski's Conjecture about the multiplicity for such a singularity.
We introduce a notion of a homological index of a holomorphic 1-form on a germ of a complex analytic variety with an isolated singularity, inspired by X. Gómez-Mont and G.-M. Greuel. For isolated complete intersection singularities it coincides with the index defined earlier by two of the authors. Subtracting from this index another one, called radial, we get an invariant of the singularity which does not depend on the 1-form. For isolated complete intersection singularities this invariant coincides with the Milnor number. We compute this invariant for arbitrary curve singularities and compare…
By using superisolated surface singularities whose link is a rational homology sphere we give counterexamples to some of the most important conjetures concernig invariants of normal surface singularities.
Motivated by Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds, we propose an inductive point of view on singularities of pairs, in the case when the ambient variety is smooth. Our main result characterizes the log canonicity of a pair in dimension N+1 by the log canonicity of another pair (not effective, in general) in dimension N.
We use classical invariant theory to solve the biholomorphic equivalence problem for two families of plane curve singularities previously considered in the literature. Our calculations motivate an intriguing conjecture that proposes a way of extracting a complete set of invariants of homogeneous plane curve singularities from their moduli algebras.
This is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0111298. We prove an explicit formula for the geometric genus p_g of a quasihomogeneous isolated surface singularity in terms of the Seiberg-Witten invariant of the link and other topological data which can be read from a resolution graph of the singularity. Moreover, we also determine all the Reidemeister-Turaev sign-refined torsion of the link (associated with any spin^c structure) in terms of the Seifert invariants.
We study lattice polarizations of five exceptional pairs of families of K3 surfaces obtained via compactifications of strange dual pairs of bimodal singularities. We show that the polarizations induced by embedding these paired families in paired toric varieties obtained from polar dual reflexive polytopes cannot be mirror lattices and identify mirror sublattices.
We study classical invariants for plane curve singularities $f\in K[[x,y]]$, $K$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$: Milnor number, delta invariant, kappa invariant and multiplicity. It is known, in characteristic zero, that $μ(f)=2δ(f)-r(f)+1$ and that $κ(f)=2δ(f)-r(f)+\mathrm{mt}(f)$. For arbitrary characteristic, Deligne prove that there is always the inequality $μ(f)\geq 2δ(f)-r(f)+1$ by showing that $μ(f)-\left( 2δ(f)-r(f)+1\right)$ measures the wild vanishing cycles. By introducing new invariants $γ,\tildeγ$, we prove in this note that $κ(f)\geq γ(f)+\mathrm{mt}(f)…
It is a very old and interesting open problem to characterize those collections of embedded topological types of local plane curve singularities which may appear as singularities of a projective plane curve C of degree d. The goal of the present article is to give a complete (topological) classification of those cases when C is rational and it has a unique singularity which is locally irreducible (i.e. C is unicuspidal) with one Puiseux pair.
Let $X$ be a horospherical $G$-variety and let $D$ be an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-divisor of $X$ that is stable under the action of a Borel subgroup $B$ of $G$ and such that $D+K\_X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier. We prove, using Bott-Samelson resolutions, that the pair $(X,D)$ is klt if and only if $\lfloor D\rfloor=0$
We classify simple flops on smooth threefolds, or equivalently, Gorenstein threefold singularities with irreducible small resolution. There are only six families of such singularities, distinguished by Koll{á}r's {\em length} invariant. The method is to apply invariant theory to Pinkham's construction of small resolutions. As a by-product, generators of the ring of invariants are given for the standard action of the Weyl group of each of the irreducible root systems.
We study the non-klt locus of singularities of pairs. We show that given a pair $(X,B)$ and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ with connected fibres such that $-(K_X+B)$ is nef over $Z$, the non-klt locus of $(X,B)$ has at most two connected components near each fibre of $X\to Z$. This was conjectured by Hacon and Han. In a different direction we answer a question of Mark Gross on connectedness of the non-klt loci of certain pairs. This is motivated by constructions in Mirror Symmetry.
We study the BPS invariants of the preferred Calabi-Yau resolution of ADE polyhedral singularities C^3/G given by Nakamura's G-Hilbert schemes. Genus 0 BPS invariants are defined by means of the moduli space of torsion sheaves as proposed by Sheldon Katz. We show that these invariants are equal to half the number of certain positive roots of an ADE root system associated to G. This is in agreement with the prediction via Gromov-Witten theory.
We give a method to investigate isolated log canonical singularities with index one which are not log terminal. Our method depends on the minimal model program. One of the main purposes is to prove that our invariant coincides with Ishii's Hodge theoretic invariant.
There are strange dual pairs of bimodal singularities that are not assigned an invertible projectivisation in EbelingPloog. We study families of $K3$ surfaces associated to such pairs.
We study a useful numerical invariant of normal surface singularities, introduced recently by T. Kawachi. Using this invariant, we give a quick proof of the (well-known) fact that all log-canonical surface singularities are either elliptic Gorenstein or rational (without assuming a priori that they are Q-Gorenstein). The main result is a criterion (stated in terms of Kawachi's invariant) regarding global generation of adjoint linear systems on normal surfaces with boundary. Such results can be used in proving effective estimates for global generation on singular threefolds. The theorem of Ein-…
We compute Bernstein-Sato polynomials of some pairs of topologically equivalent plane curve singularities. Some pairs have the same Tjurina number but distinct Bernstein-Sato polynomials, which implies that they are not analytically equivalent.
A new proof for the embedded resolution of surface singularities in a three-dimensional smooth ambient space over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. The proof makes use of an upper semicontinuous resolution invariant which prescribes the center in each step of the resolution algorithm. The resolution invariant strictly decreases under each blowup. The definition of the resolution invariant is inspired by the proofs of resolution of singularities in arbitrary dimension over fields of characteristic zero. It was developed in an attempt to generalize these proofs to the sett…
We study a specific class of deformations of curve singularities: the case when the singular point splits to several ones, such that the total $δ$ invariant is preserved. These are also known as equi-normalizable or equi-generic deformations. We restrict primarily to the deformations of singularities with smooth branches. A natural invariant of the singular type is introduced: the dual graph. It imposes severe restrictions on the possible collisions/deformations. And allows to prove some bounds on the variation of classical invariants in equi-normalizable families. We consider in details defor…
If $ D \in X$ is a curve with multiple points in a surface, a parabolic bundle defined on $(X;D)$ away from the singularities can be extended in several ways to a parabolic bundle on a resolution of singularities. We investigate the possible parabolic Chern classes for these extensions.
We describe all connected components of the space of hyperbolic Gorenstein quasi-homogeneous surface singularities. We prove that any connected component is homeomorphic to a quotient of R^d by a discrete group.
For any elliptic normal surface singularity with rational homology sphere link we consider a new elliptic sequence, which differs from the one introduced by Laufer and S. S.-T. Yau. However, we show that their length coincide. Using the properties of both sequences we succeed to connect the common length with the geometric genus and also with several topological invariants, e.g. with the Seiberg--Witten invariant of the link.
The article investigates the behaviour of the characteristic zero resolution invariant when transcribed suitably to the case of surfaces in positive characteristic. By Moh's jumping phenomenon -- or the occurrence of kangaroo singularities -- one knows that the invariant may increase, thus destroying any induction. We describe in the paper how one can modify in the purely inseparable surface case the invariant by adding a subtle correction term so as to prohibit its occasional increases and to establish the induction argument again.
Given a normal surface singularity (X,0), its link, M is a closed differentiable three dimensional manifold which carries much analytic information. It is an interesting question to ask whether, under suitable analytic and topological conditions, the geometric genus (or other analytic invariants) can be recovered from the link. The Casson invariant conjecture predicts that p_g can be identified using the Casson invariant in the case when (X,0) is a complete intersection and M has trivial first homology with integral coefficients. The Seiberg-Witten invariant conjecture predicts that the geomet…
In 1982, Tamaki Yano proposed a conjecture predicting the set of b-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity germ which is generic in its equisingularity class. In \cite{ACLM-Yano2} we proved the conjecture for the case in which the germ has two Puiseux pairs and its algebraic monodromy has distinct eigenvalues. In this article we aim to study the Bernstein polynomial for any function with the hypotheses above. In particular the set of all common roots of those Bernstein polynomials is given. We provide also bounds for some analytic invariants of singularities and illustrate the comp…
The stringy Euler number and E-function of Batyrev for log terminal singularities can in dimension 2 also be considered for a normal surface singularity with all log discrepancies nonzero in its minimal log resolution. Here we obtain a structure theorem for resolution graphs with respect to log discrepancies, implying that these stringy invariants can be defined in a natural way, even when some log discrepancies are zero, and more precisely for all normal surface singularities which are not log canonical. We also show that the stringy E-functions of log terminal surface singularities are polyn…
The purpose of this paper is to show how Rees algebras can be applied in the study of singularities embedded in smooth schemes over perfect fields. In particular, we will study situations in which the multiplicity of a hypersurface is a multiple of the characteristic. As another application, here we indicate how the use of these algebras has trivialized local-global questions in resolution of singularities over fields of characteristic zero.
We give an overview of invariants of algebraic singularities over perfect fields. We then show how they lead to a synthetic proof of embedded resolution of singularities of 2-dimensional schemes.
There are two well known tasks, related to Newton polyhedra: to study invariants of singularities in terms of their Newton polyhedra, and to describe Newton polyhedra of resultants and discriminants. We introduce so called resultantal singularities, whose study in terms of Newton polyhedra unifies these two tasks to a certain extent. As an application, we study topological invariants of determinantal singularities and (co)vector fields on singular varieties in terms of Newton polyhedra, and provide new formulations and proofs for a number of well known results. The computations are based on ce…
There are many generalizations of the McKay correspondence for higher dimensional Gorenstein quotient singularities and there are some applications to compute the topological invariants today. But some of the invariants are completely different from the classical invariants, in particular for non-Gorenstein cases. In this paper, we would like to discuss the McKay correspondence for 2-dimensional quotient singularities via "special" representations which gives the classical topological invariants and give a new characterization of the special representations for cyclic quotient singularities in…
We consider the polar curves $\PSO$ arising from generic projections of a germ $(S,0)$ of complex surface singularity onto $\C^2$. Taking $(S,0)$ to be a minimal singularity of normal surface (i.e. a rational singularity with reduced tangent cone), we give the $δ$-invariant of these polar curves, as well as the equisingularity-type of their generic plane projections, which are also the discriminants of generic projections of $(S,0)$. These two (equisingularity)-data for $\PSO$ are described in term, on the one side of the geometry of the tangent cone of $(S,0)$ and on the other side of the lim…
In this note I give a description of Lyubeznik's local cohomology invariants for a certain natural class of local rings, namely the ones which have the same local cohomology vanishing as one expects from an isolated singularity. This strengthens the results of Bondu and myself in math.AG/0406265 while at the same time somewhat simplifying the proofs. Through examples I further point out the bad behavior of these invariants under reduction to positive characteristic.
