We introduce a notion of a homological index of a holomorphic 1-form on a germ of a complex analytic variety with an isolated singularity, inspired by X. Gómez-Mont and G.-M. Greuel. For isolated complete intersection singularities it coincides with the index defined earlier by two of the authors. Subtracting from this index another one, called radial, we get an invariant of the singularity which does not depend on the 1-form. For isolated complete intersection singularities this invariant coincides with the Milnor number. We compute this invariant for arbitrary curve singularities and compare it with the Milnor number introduced by R.-O. Buchweitz and G.-M. Greuel for such singularities.
We prove homological mirror symmetry for Milnor fibers of simple singularities in dimensions greater than one, which are among the log Fano cases of Conjecture 1.5 in arXiv:1806.04345. The proof is based on a relation between matrix factorizations and Calabi--Yau completions. As an application, we give an explicit computation of the Hochschild cohomology group of the derived $n$-preprojective algebra of a Dynkin quiver for any $n \geq 1$, and the symplectic cohomology group of the Milnor fiber of any simple singularity in any dimension greater than one.
We show the possible Milnor numbers of deformations of semi-quasi-homogeneous isolated plane curve singularities. In Theorem 1.1 we list integers can be attained as Milnor numbers of a given semi-quasi-homogeneous singularity.
The jump of the Milnor number of an isolated singularity $f_0$ is the minimal non-zero difference between the Milnor numbers of $f_0$ and one of its deformations $(f_s)$. We give a formula for the jump in some class of surface singularities in the case deformations are non-degenerate.
Let f_0 be a plane curve singularity. We study the Minor numbers of singularities in deformations of f_0. We completely describe the set of these Milnor numbers for homogeneous singularities f_0 in the case of non-degenerate deformations and obtain some partial results on this set in the general case.
We study the Milnor monodromies of non-isolated hypersurface singularities and show that the reduced cohomology groups of the Milnor fibers are concentrated in the middle degree for some eigenvalues of the monodromies. As an application of this result, we give an explicit formula for some parts of their Jordan normal forms.
The aim of this paper is to show the possible Milnor numbers of deformations of semi-quasi-homogeneous isolated plane curve singularities. Main result states that if $f$ is irreducible and nondegenerate, by deforming $f$ one can attain all Milnor numbers ranging from $μ(f)$ to $μ(f)-r(p-r)$, where $r$ and $p$ are easily computed from the Newton diagram of $f$.
We study function germs on toric varieties which are nondegenerate for their Newton diagram. We express their motivic Milnor fibre in terms of their Newton diagram. We extend a formula for the motivic nearby fibre to the case of a toroidal degeneration. We illustrate this by some examples.
We compute the motivic Milnor fiber of a complex plane curve singularity in an inductive and combinatoric way using the extended simplified resolution graph. The method introduced in this article has a consequence that one can study the Hodge-Steenbrink spectrum of such a singularity in terms of that of a quasi-homogeneous singularity.
In this article we investigate mixed polynomials and present conditions that can be applied on a specific class of polynomials in order to prove the existence of the Milnor Fibration, Milnor-Lê Fibration and the equivalence between them. We prove for this class the of functions that the Milnor-Lê fiber on a regular value is homeomorphic to the Milnor-Lê fiber on a critical value. We develop a criterion to verify the transversality property and apply it to a special case of the class of mixed polynomial.
In this note we give a simple proof of the following relative analog of the well known Milnor-Palamodov theorem: the Bruce-Roberts number of a function relative to an isolated hypersurface singularity is equal to its topological Milnor number (the rank of a certain relative (co)homology group) if and only if the hypersurface singularity is quasihomogeneous. The proof relies on an interpretation of the Bruce-Roberts number in terms of differential forms and the Lê-Greuel formula.
The jump of the Milnor number of an isolated singularity $f_{0}$ is the minimal non-zero difference between the Milnor numbers of $f_{0}$ and one of its deformation $(f_{s}).$ In the case $f_{s}$ are non-degenerate singularities we call the jump non-degenerate. We give a formula (an inductive algorithm using diophantine equations) for the non-degenerate jump of $f_{0}$ in the case $f_{0}$ is a convenient singularity with only one $(n-1)$-dimensional face of its Newton diagram which equivalently (in our problem) can be replaced by the Brieskorn-Pham singularities.
Let $ Φ: ({\mathbb C}^2, 0) \to ( {\mathbb C}^3, 0) $ be a finitely determined complex analytic germ and let $(\{f=0\},0)$ be the reduced equation of its image, a non-isolated hypersurface singularity. We provide the plumbing graph of the boundary of the Milnor fibre of $f$ from the double-point-geometry of $Φ$.
We show that the base spaces of the semiuniversal unfoldings of some weighted homogeneous singularities can be identified with moduli spaces of $A_\infty$-structures on the trivial extension algebras of the endomorphism algebras of the tilting objects. The same algebras also appear in the Fukaya categories of their mirrors. Based on these identifications, we discuss applications to homological mirror symmetry for Milnor fibers, and give a proof of homological mirror symmetry for an $n$-dimensional affine hypersurface of degree $n + 2$ and the double cover of the $n$-dimensional affine space br…
Let V be a projective hypersurface of fixed degree and dimension which has only isolated singular points. We show that, if the sum of the Milnor numbers at the singular points of V is large, then V cannot have a point of large multiplicity, unless V is a cone. As an application, we give an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Dimca and Papadima.
We investigate properties of the contact exponent (in the sense of Hironaka [Hi]) of plane algebroid curve singularities over algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. We prove that the contact exponent is an equisingularity invariant and give a new proof of the stability of the maximal contact. Then we prove a bound for the Milnor number and determine the equisingularity class of algebroid curves for which this bound is attained. We do not use the method of Newton's diagrams. Our tool is the logarithmic distance developed in [GB-P1].
Let $f=0$ be a plane algebraic curve of degree $d>1$ with an isolated singular point at the origin of the complex plane. We show that the Milnor number $μ_0(f)$ is less than or equal to $(d-1)^2-\left[\frac{d}{2}\right]$, unless $f=0$ is a set of $d$ concurrent lines passing through 0. Then we characterize the curves $f=0$ for which $μ_0(f)=(d-1)^2-\left[\frac{d}{2}\right]$.
In the present paper MAPLE subroutines computing Milnor and Tyurina numbers of an isolated algebraic hypersurface singularity are presented and described in detail. They represents examples, and perhaps the first ones, of a MAPLE implementation of local monomial ordering. As an application, the last section is devoted to writing down equations of algebraic stratifications of Kuranishi spaces of simple Arnol'd singularities: they geometrically represents, by means of inclusions of algebraic subsets, the partial ordering on classes of simple singularities induced by the adjacency relation.
We study codimension two determinantal varieties with isolated singularities. These singularities admit a unique smoothing, thus we can define their Milnor number as the middle Betti number of their generic fiber. For surfaces in C^4, we obtain a Lê-Greuel formula expressing the Milnor number of the surface in terms of the second polar multiplicity and the Milnor number of a generic section. We also relate the Milnor number with Ebeling and Gusein-Zade index of the 1- form given by the differential of a generic linear projection defined on the surface. To illustrate the results, in the last se…
\noindent Let $μ(f)$ resp. $c(f)$ be the Milnor number resp. the degree of the conductor of an irreducible power series $f\in \bK[[x,y]]$, where $\bK$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. It is well-known that $μ(f)\geq c(f)$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality $μ(f)=c(f)$ in terms of the semigroup associated with $f$, provided that $p>\ord f$.
Suppose that $f$ defines a singular, complex affine hypersurface. If the critical locus of $f$ is one-dimensional at the origin, we obtain new general bounds on the ranks of the homology groups of the Milnor fiber, $F_{f, \mathbf 0}$, of $f$ at the origin, with either integral or $\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$ coefficients. If the critical locus of $f$ has arbitrary dimension, we show that the smallest possibly non-zero reduced Betti number of $F_{f, \mathbf 0}$ completely determines if $f$ defines a family of isolated singularities, over a smooth base, with constant Milnor number. This result has a n…
We give the first (as far as we know) complete description of the boundary of the Milnor fiber for some non-isolated singular germs of surfaces in ${\bf C}^3$. We study irreducible (i.e. $gcd (m,k,l) = 1$) non-isolated (i.e. $1 \leq k < l$) Hirzebruch hypersurface singularities in ${\bf C}^3$ given by the equation $z^m - x^ky^l = 0$. We show that the boundary $L$ of the Milnor fiber is always a Seifert manifold and we give an explicit description of the Seifert structure. From it, we deduce that : 1) $L$ is never diffeomorphic to the boundary of the normalization. 2) $L$ is a lens space iff $m…
We give a full exceptional collection in the triangulated category of singularities in the sense of Orlov for a hypersurface singularity of Fermat type, and discuss its relation with homological mirror symmetry for simple elliptic hypersurface singularities.
We prove a new formula for the Hirzebruch-Milnor classes of global complete intersections with arbitrary singularities describing the difference between the Hirzebruch classes and the virtual ones. This generalizes a formula for the Chern-Milnor classes in the hypersurface case that was conjectured by S. Yokura and was proved by A. Parusinski and P. Pragacz. It also generalizes a formula of J. Seade and T. Suwa for the Chern-Milnor classes of complete intersections with isolated singularities.
We describe Milnor open books and Legendrian surgery diagrams for canonical contact structures of links of some rational surface singularities. We also describe an infinite family of Milnor fillable contact 3-manifolds so that the Milnor genus (resp. Milnor norm) is strictly greater than the support genus (resp. support norm) of the canonical contact structure, for each member of this family.
In this paper we use the results from the first part to compute the vanishing topology for matrix singularities based on certain spaces of matrices. We place the variety of singular matrices in a geometric configuration of free divisors which are the "exceptional orbit varieties" for repesentations of solvable groups. Because there are towers of representations for towers of solvable groups, the free divisors actually form a tower of free divisors $E_n$, and we give an inductive procedure for computing the vanishing topology of the matrix singularities. The inductive procedure we use is an ext…
We discuss and prove a number of cohomological results for Milnor fibers, real links, and complex links of local complete intersections with singularities of arbitrary dimension.
In this paper we give a complete answer to a question posed by Dimca and Greuel about the quotient of the Milnor and Tjurina numbers of a plane curve singularity. We put this question into a general framework of the study of the difference of Milnor and Tjurina numbers for isolated complete intersection singularities showing its connection with other problems in singularity theory.
We show that every $μ$-constant family of isolated hypersurface singularities satisfying a nondegeneracy condition in the sense of Kouchnirenko, is topologically trivial, also is equimultiple.
We show that a family of isolated complete intersection singularities (ICIS) with constant total Milnor number has no coalescence of singularities. This extends a well known result of Gabrielov, Lazzeri and Lê for hypersurfaces. We use A'Campo's theorem to see that the Lefschetz number of the generic monodromy of the ICIS is zero when the ICIS is singular. We give a pair applications for families of functions on ICIS which extend also some known results for functions on a smooth variety.
We derive a formula for the Milnor class of scheme-theoretic global complete intersections (with arbitrary singularities) in a smooth variety in terms of the Segre class of its singular scheme. In codimension one the formula recovers a formula of Aluffi for the Milnor class of a hypersurface.
The Milnor formula $μ=2δ-r+1$ relates the Milnor number $μ$, the double point number $δ$ and the number $r$ of branches of a plane curve singularity. It holds over the fields of characteristic zero. Melle and Wall based on a result by Deligne proved the inequality $μ\geq 2δ-r+1$ in arbitrary characteristic and showed that the equality $μ=2δ-r+1$ characterizes the singularities with no wild vanishing cycles. In this note we give an account of results on the Milnor formula in characteristic $p$. It holds if the plane singularity is Newton non-degenerate (Boubakri et al. Rev. Mat. Complut. (2010)…
The jump of the Milnor number of an isolated singularity $f_0$ is the minimal non-zero difference between the Milnor numbers of $f_0$ and one of its deformations $(f_s)).$ We prove that for the singularities in the $X_9$ singularity class their jumps are equal to 2.
We prove fibration theorems à la Milnor for differentiable real maps with non isolated critical values. We study the situation for maps with linear discriminant, and prove that the concept of d-regularity is the key point for the existence of a Milnor fibration on the sphere. We also explain how one can modify the target space by homeomorphisms to linearize a general discriminant. Whenever the composed map is d-regular one has fibration on the sphere. Plenty of examples are discussed along the text.
For an isolated hypersurface singularity $f=0$, the Milnor number $μ$ is greater than or equal to the Tjurina number $τ$ (the dimension of the base of the semi-universal deformation), with equality if $f$ is quasi-homogeneous. K. Saito proved the converse. The same result is true for complete intersections, but is much harder. For a Gorenstein surface singularity $(V,0)$, the difference $μ- τ$ can be defined whether or not $V$ is smoothable; it was proved in [23] that it is non-negative, and equal to 0 iff $(V,0)$ is quasi-homogeneous. We conjecture a similar result for non-Gorenstein surface …
We study one parameter deformations of a pair consisting of an analytic singular space $X_0$ and a function $f_0$ on it, in case this defines an isolated singularity. We prove, under general conditions, a bouquet decomposition of the Milnor fibre when the isolated singularity splits in the deformation and the invariance of the Milnor fibration if there is no splitting.
We consider a real analytic map $F=(f_1,...,f_k) : (\mathbb{R}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{R}^k,0)$, $2 \le k \le n-1$, that satisfies Milnor's conditions (a) and (b) introduced by D. Massey. This implies that every real analytic $f_I=(f_{i_1},...,f_{i_l}) : (\mathbb{R}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{R}^l,0)$, induced from $F$ by projections where $1 \le l \le n-2$ and $I=\{i_1,...,i_l\}$, also satisfies Milnor's conditions (a) and (b). We give several relations between the Euler characteristics of the Milnor fibre of $F$, the Milnor fibres of the maps $f_I$, the link of $F^{-1}(0)$ and the links of …
In this article we prove two results concerning the motivic Milnor fibres $S^ε(f)$ associated to a map germ $f: (\mathbb{R}^n,0)\to(\mathbb{R},0)$, defined by G. Comte and G. Fichou. Firstly, we prove that if $f,g:(\mathbb{R}^n,0)\to(\mathbb{R},0)$ are arc-analytically equivalent germs of Nash functions then the virtual Poincaré polynomial of the corresponding motivic Milnor fibres are equal. This extends (and provides a new proof) of a result of G. Fichou. Secondly, let $T\subset\mathbb{R}^m$ be a real algebraic set and $f: T\times(\mathbb{R}^n,0)\to\mathbb{R}$ a polynomial function of polyno…
We study the boundary of the Milnor fibre of real analytic singularities $f: (\bR^m,0) \to (\bR^k,0)$, $m\geq k$, with an isolated critical value and the Thom $a_f$-property. We define the vanishing zone for $f$ and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for it to be a fibre bundle over the link of the singular set of $f^{-1}(0)$. In the case of singularities of the type $\fgbar: (\bC^n,0) \to (\bC,0)$ with an isoalted critical value, $f, g$ holomorphic, we further describe the degeneration of the boundary of the Milnor fibre to the link of $\fgbar$. As a milestone, we also construct a Lê…
We prove that for two germs of analytic mappings $f,g\colon (\mathbb{C}^n,0) \rightarrow (\mathbb{C}^p,0)$ with the same Newton polyhedra which are (Khovanskii) non-degenerate and their zero sets are complete intersections with isolated singularity at the origin, there is a piecewise analytic family $\{f_t\}$ of analytic maps with $f_0=f, f_1=g$ which has a so-called {\it uniform stable radius for the Milnor fibration}. As a corollary, we show that their Milnor numbers are equal. Also, a formula for the Milnor number is given in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the component functions. This is…
We study the essentially isolated determinantal singularities (EIDS), defined by W. Ebeling and S. Gusein-Zade, as a generalization of isolated singularity. We prove in dimension $3$ a minimality theorem for the Milnor number of a generic hyperplane section of an EIDS, generalizing previous results by J. Snoussi in dimension $2$. We define strongly generic hyperplane sections of an EIDS and show that they are still EIDS. Using strongly general hyperplanes, we extend a result of Lê D. T. concerning constancy of the Milnor number.
We study versions of homological mirror symmetry for hypersurface cusp singularities and the three hypersurface simple elliptic singularities. We show that the Milnor fibres of each of these carries a distinguished Lefschetz fibration; its derived directed Fukaya category is equivalent to the derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth rational surface $Y_{p,q,r}$. By using localization techniques on both sides, we get an isomorphism between the derived wrapped Fukaya category of the Milnor fibre and the derived category of coherent sheaves on a quasi-projective surface given by deleting …
The sandwiched surface singularities are those rational surface singularities which dominate birationally smooth surface singularities. de Jong and van Straten showed that one can reduce the study of the deformations of a sandwiched surface singularity to the study of deformations of a 1-dimensional object, a so-called decorated plane curve singularity. In particular, the Milnor fibers corresponding to their various smoothing components may be reconstructed up to diffeomorphisms from those deformations of associated decorated curves which have only ordinary singularities. Part of the topology …
We give a survey on results related to the Berglund-Hübsch duality of invertible polynomials and the homological mirror symmetry conjecture for singularities.
Using the semicontinuity of the Milnor number and the Łojasiewicz exponent, we give a simple proof of Yau's characterization of isolated homogenous hypersurface singularities.
We describe a generalization of Milnor's formula for the Milnor number of an isolated hypersurface singularity to the case of a function $f$ whose restriction $f|(X,0)$ to an arbitrarily singular reduced complex analytic space $(X,0) \subset (\mathbb C^n,0)$ has an isolated singularity in the stratified sense. The corresponding analogue of the Milnor number, $μ_f(α;X,0)$, is the number of Morse critical points in a stratum $\mathscr S_α$ of $(X,0)$ in a morsification of $f|(X,0)$. Our formula expresses $μ_f(α;X,0)$ as a homological index based on the derived geometry of the Nash modification o…
Let f and g be holomorphic function-germs vanishing at the origin of a complex analytic germ of dimension three. Suppose that they have no common irreducible component and that the real analytic map-germ given by the multiplication of f by the conjugate of g has an isolated critical value at 0. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the real analytic map-germ to have a Milnor fibration and we prove that in this case the boundary of its Milnor fibre is a Waldhausen manifold. As an intermediate milestone we describe geometrically the Milnor fibre of map-germs given by the multiplication…
For a germ of a variety $\mathcal{V}, 0 \subset \mathbb C^N, 0$, a singularity $\mathcal{V}_0$ of type $\mathcal{V}$, is given by a germ $f_0 : \mathbb C^n, 0 \to \mathbb C^N, 0$ which is transverse to $\mathcal{V}$ in an appropriate sense so that $\mathcal{V}_0 = f_0^{-1}(\mathcal{V})$. For these singularities, we introduce "characteristic cohomology" to capture the contribution of the topology of $\mathcal{V}$ to that of $\mathcal{V}_0$, for the Milnor fiber (for $\mathcal{V}, 0$ a hypersurface), and complement and link of $\mathcal{V}_0$ (in the general case). The characteristic cohomology …
This article and its successor concern the topology of real isolated hypersurface singularities. We prove that after attaching a certain number of handles the real Milnor fibres become contractible, with each handle corresponding to a critical point of a morsification; in particular one recovers the classical formula of Khimshiashvili for the Euler characteristic of the Milnor fibres. We then give sufficient conditions for having that the integer homology groups of the real Milnor fibres are isomorphic to the homology groups of a bouquet of spheres. This is followed by a discussion on real van…
In order to understand the deformations of determinants and Pfaffians resulting from deformations of matrices, we study the deformation theory of composites $f\circ F$, with isolated singularities, where $f:Y\to\C$ has Cohen-Macaulay singular locus and $F:X\to Y$. We identify the corresponding $T^1(F)$ as (something like) the cohomology of a derived functor, and construct a canonical long exact sequence from which it follows that $$τ=μ(f\circ F)-β_0+β_1,$$ where $τ$ is the length of $T^1(F)$ and $β_i$ is the length of $Tor_i(Ø_Y/J_f,Ø_X)$. This explains numerical coincidences observed in lists…
