Let k be an algebraically closed field and let HaG(d) be the open locus inside H(d) (the Hilbert scheme of 0-dimensional length d subschemes of the projective (d-2)-space over k) corresponding to arithmetically Gorenstein subschemes. We prove the irreducibility and characterize the singularities of HaG(6). In order to achieve these results we also classify all Artinian, Gorenstein, not necessarily graded, k-algebras up to degree 6. Moreover we describe the loci in HaG(6) obtained via some geometric construction. Finally we prove the obstructedness of some families of points in HaG(d) for each d>5.
We describe the non-Gorenstein loci of normal toric varieties. In the case of Hibi rings a combinatorial description is provided in terms of the underlying partially ordered set. As a non-toric application we compute the dimensions of the non-Gorenstein loci of the first secant variety of Segre varieties.
We analyse the Gorenstein locus of the Hilbert scheme of $d$ points on $\mathbb{P}^n$ i.e. the open subscheme parameterising zero-dimensional Gorenstein subschemes of $\mathbb{P}^n$ of degree $d$. We give new sufficient criteria for smoothability and smoothness of points of the Gorenstein locus. In particular we prove that this locus is irreducible when $d\leq 13$ and find its components when $d = 14$. The proof is relatively self-contained and it does not rely on a computer algebra system. As a by--product, we give equations of the fourth secant variety to the $d$-th Veronese reembedding of $…
Given a commutative noetherian non-positive DG-ring with bounded cohomology which has a dualizing DG-module, we study its regular, Gorenstein and Cohen-Macaulay loci. We give a sufficient condition for the regular locus to be open, and show that the Gorenstein locus is always open. However, both of these loci are often empty: we show that no matter how nice $\mathrm{H}^0(A)$ is, there are examples where the Gorenstein locus of $A$ is empty. We then show that the Cohen-Macaulay locus of a commutative noetherian DG-ring with bounded cohomology which has a dualizing DG-module always contains a de…
In [BFMT17] we introduced orbital degeneracy loci as generalizations of degeneracy loci of morphisms between vector bundles. Orbital degeneracy loci can be constructed from any stable subvariety of a representation of an algebraic group. In this paper we show that their canonical bundles can be conveniently controlled in the case where the affine coordinate ring of the subvariety is Gorenstein. We then study in a systematic way the subvarieties obtained as orbit closures in representations with finitely many orbits, and we determine the canonical bundles of the corresponding orbital degeneracy…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field and let $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $\Hilb_{d}(\p{N})$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes. We prove that $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$ is irreducible for $d\le9$, we characterize geometrically its singularities for $d\le 8$ and we give some results about them when $d=9$ which give some evidence to a conjecture on the nature of the singular points in $\Hilb_{d}^{G}(\p{N})$.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. The question of irreducibility of the punctual Hilbert scheme Hilb_d P^n and its Gorenstein locus for various d was studied in [CEVV8, CN9, CN10, CN11]. In this short paper we prove that the subschemes corresponding to the Gorenstein algebras having Hilbert function (1,5,5,1) are smoothable i.e. lie in the closure of the locus of smooth subschemes. Among the Gorenstein algebras of length 12 the smoothability of algebras having such Hilbert function seems to be the most inapproachable using non-direct tools e.g. structural theorems.
We establish restrictions on the Hilbert function of standard graded Gorenstein algebras with only quadratic relations. Furthermore, we pose some intriguing conjectures and provide evidence for them by proving them in some cases using a number of different techniques, including liaison theory and generic initial ideals.
A good way of parametrizing 0-dimensional schemes in an affine space $\mathbb{A}_K^n$ has been developed in the last 20 years using border basis schemes. Given a multiplicity $μ$, they provide an open covering of the Hilbert scheme ${\rm Hilb}^μ(\mathbb{A}^n_K)$ and can be described by easily computable quadratic equations. A natural question arises on how to determine loci which are contained in border basis schemes and whose rational points represent 0-dimensional $K$-algebras sharing a given property. The main focus of this paper is on giving effective answers to this general problem. The p…
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and let $H_G(d,N)$ be the open locus of the Hilbert scheme $H(d,N)$ corresponding to Gorenstein subschemes of degree $d$ in the projective N-space. We proved in a previous paper that $H_G(d,N)$ is irreducible for $d\le9$ and $N\ge1$. In the present paper we prove that also $H_G(10,N)$ is irreducible for each $N\ge1$, giving also a complete description of its singular locus.
Let $S$ be the first degeneracy locus of a morphism of vector bundles corresponding to a general matrix of linear forms in $\mathbb{P}^s$. We prove that, under certain positivity conditions, its Hilbert square $\mathrm{Hilb}^2(S)$ is isomorphic to the zero locus of a global section of an irreducible homogeneous vector bundle on a product of Grassmannians. Our construction involves a naturally associated Fano variety, and an explicit description of the isomorphism.
We prove that, for 3 < m < n-1, the Grassmannian of m-dimensional subspaces of the space of skew-symmetric forms over a vector space of dimension n is birational to the Hilbert scheme of the degeneracy loci of m global sections of Omega(2), the twisted cotangent bundle on P^{n-1}. For 3=m<n-1 and n odd, this Grassmannian is proved to be birational to the set of Veronese surfaces parametrized by the Pfaffians of linear skew-symmetric matrices of order n.
By a theorem of R. Stanley, a graded Cohen-Macaulay domain $A$ is Gorenstein if and only if its Hilbert series satisfies the functional equation \[ \operatorname{Hilb}_A(t^{-1})=(-1)^d t^{-a}\operatorname{Hilb}_A(t), \] where $d$ is the Krull dimension and $a$ is the a-invariant of $A$. We reformulate this functional equation in terms of an infinite system of linear constraints on the Laurent coefficients of $\operatorname{Hilb}_A(t)$ at $t=1$. The main idea consists of examining the graded algebra $\mathcal F=\bigoplus_{r\in \mathbb{Z}}\mathcal F_r$ of formal power series in the variable $x$ …

Codimension two Artinian algebras $A$ have the strong and weak Lefschetz properties provided the characteristic is zero or greater than the socle degree. It is open to what extent such results might extend to codimension three AG algebras - the most promising results so far have concerned the weak Lefschetz property for such algebras. We here show that every standard-graded codimension three Artinian Gorenstein algebra $A$ having low maximum value of the Hilbert function - at most six - has the strong Lefschetz property, provided that the characteristic is zero. When the characteristic is grea…
We give examples of infinitely extendable (not as cones) arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay and arithmetically Gorenstein subvarieties of projective spaces and which are not complete intersections. The proof uses the computation of the dimension of the Hilbert scheme of codimension $2$ subschemes of projective spaces due to G. Ellingsrud and of arithmetically Gorenstein codimension $3$ subschemes due to J. O. Kleppe and R.-M. Miró-Roig.
Let $A$ be a local Artinian Gorenstein ring with algebraically closed residue field $A/{\frak M}=k$ of characteristic 0, and let $P_A(z) := \sum_{p=0}^{\infty} ({\mathrm{ Tor}}_p^A(k,k))z^p $ be its Poincaré series. We prove that $P_A(z)$ is rational if either $\dim_k({{\frak M}^2/{\frak M}^3}) \leq 4 $ and $ \dim_k(A) \leq 16,$ or there exist $m\leq 4$ and $c$ such that the Hilbert function $H_A(n)$ of $A$ is equal to $ m$ for $n\in [2,c]$ and equal to 1 for $n > c$. The results are obtained thanks to a decomposition of the apolar ideal $\mathrm {Ann}(F)$ when $F=G+H$ and $G$ and $H$ belong t…
It is well known that for a subscheme $V$ in ${\mathbb P}^{n}$ of codimension two, the conditions (1) $V$ is ACM, and (2) $V$ is "licci" (i.e. $V$ is in the liaison class of a complete intersection) are equivalent. In higher codimension, (2) implies (1) but the converse is false. For Gorenstein liaison the analog of (2) is: $(2')$ $V$ is "glicci" (i.e. $V$ is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection). It remains true that $(2')$ implies (1) but now the converse is an important open question. Previously the authors described a mechanism for lifting monomial ideals to reduced u…
We prove that the Hilbert scheme of degeneracy loci of pairs of global sections of Omega(2), the twisted cotangent bundle on P^(n-1), is unirational and dominated by the Grassmannian of lines in the projective space of skew-symmetric forms over a vector space of dimension n. We provide a constructive method to find the fibers of the dominant map. In classical terminology, this amounts to giving a method to realize all the pencils of linear line complexes having a prescribed set of centers. In particular, we show that the previous map is birational when n=4.
In this paper, we exploit some geometric-differential techniques to prove the strong Lefschetz property in degree $1$ for a complete intersection standard Artinian Gorenstein algebra of codimension $6$ presented by quadrics. We prove also some strong Lefschetz properties for the same kind of Artinian algebras in higher codimensions. Moreover, we analyze some loci that come naturally into the picture of "special" Artinian algebras: for them, we give some geometric descriptions and show a connection between the non emptiness of the so-called non-Lefschetz locus in degree $1$ and the "lifting" of…
Let $f \colon X \to Y$ be the blow-up of a smooth projective variety $Y$ along its codimension two smooth closed subvariety. In this paper, we show that the moduli space of stable sheaves on $X$ and $Y$ are connected by a sequence of flip-like diagrams. The result is a higher dimensional generalization of the result of Nakajima and Yoshioka, which is the case of $\dim Y=2$. As an application of our general result, we study the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of two points.
We continue our study of the Noether-Lefschetz loci in toric varieties and investigate deformation of pairs (V,X) where V is a complete intersection subvariety and X a quasi-smooth hypersurface in a odd dimensional simplicial projective toric variety, with V\subset X. Under some assumptions, we prove that the cohomological class in H^{k,k}(X) associated to V remains of type (k,k) under an infinitesimal deformation if and only if V remains algebraic. Actually we prove that locally the Noether-Lefschetz locus is an irreducible component of a suitable Hilbert scheme. This generalizes Theorem 4.2 …
In this paper we study the gonality of the normalizations of curves in the linear system $|H|$ of a general primitively polarized complex $K3$ surface $(S,H)$ of genus $p$. We prove two main results. First we give a necessary condition on $p, g, r, d$ for the existence of a curve in $ |H|$ with geometric genus $g$ whose normalization has a $g^ r_d$. Secondly we prove that for all numerical cases compatible with the above necessary condition, there is a family of \emph{nodal} curves in $|H|$ of genus $g$ carrying a $g^1_k$ and of dimension equal to the \emph{expected dimension} $\min\{2(k-1),g\…
Let $\mathbb{W}$ be an irreducible subvariety a Hilbert scheme $Hilb_{p_W} (t) (\mathbb{P}^n )$. We show that under mild hypothesis there are polynomial formulas for the degrees of the loci of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{P}^n$ with singular subschemes containing some member of the family $\mathbb{W}$. The formulas are made explicit in a number of cases.
We study the degeneracy loci of general bundle morphisms from the direct sum of m copies of the structural sheaf on $P^n$ to $Ω(2)$, also from the point of view of the classical geometrical interpretation of the sections of $Ω(2)$ as linear line complexes. We consider in particular the case of $P^5$ with m=2, 3. For n=5 and m=3 we give an explicit description of the Hilbert scheme H of elliptic normal scrolls in $P^5$, by defining a natural rational map from the Grassmannian G(2,14) to H, which results to be dominant with general fibre of degree four.
