We establish the validity of the Euler$+$Prandtl approximation for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with Dirichlet boundary conditions, in the vanishing viscosity limit, for initial data which are analytic only near the boundary, and Sobolev smooth away from the boundary. Our proof does not require higher order correctors, and works directly by estimating an $L^{1}$-type norm for the vorticity of the error term in the expansion Navier-Stokes$-($Euler$+$Prandtl$)$. An important ingredient in the proof is the propagation of local analyticity for the Euler equation, a result of independent interest.
This paper concerns the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory for steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flows over a rotating disk. We prove that the Navier Stokes flows can be decomposed into Euler and Prandtl flows in the inviscid limit. In so doing, we develop a new set of function spaces and prove several embedding theorems which capture the interaction between the Prandtl scaling and the geometry of our domain.
In this paper, we prove the stability of shear flows of Prandtl type as $ \big(U(y/\sqrtν),0\big)$ for the steady Navier-Stokes equations under a natural spectral assumption on the linearized NS operator. We develop a direct energy method combined with compact method to solve the Orr-Sommerfeld equation.
This paper is concerned with the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory in the inviscid limit of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, which is an extension of the pioneer paper (Y. Guo et al., 2017, Ann. PDE) from a domain of $[0,L]\times\mathbb{R}_+$ to $[0,L]\times[0,2]$. Under the symmetry assumption, we establish the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions and the error estimates. The convergence rate as $\e\rightarrow 0$ is also given.

We show the $H^1$ stability of shear flows of Prandtl type: $U^ν= (U_s(y/\sqrtν),0)$, in the steady two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations, under the natural assumptions that $U_s(Y) > 0$ for $Y > 0$, $U_s(0) = 0$, and $U_s'(0) > 0$. Our result is in sharp contrast with the unsteady ones, in which at most Gevrey stability can be obtained, even under global monotonicity and concavity hypotheses. It provides the first positive answer to the inviscid limit problem in Sobolev regularity for a non-trivial class of steady Navier-Stokes flows with no-slip boundary condition.
In this article we establish the validity of Prandtl layer expansions around Euler flows which are not shear. The presence of non-shear flows at the leading order creates a singularity of $o(\frac{1}{\sqrtε})$. A new $y$-weighted positivity estimate is developed to control this leading-order growth at the far field.
In this work, we establish the convergence of 2D, stationary Navier-Stokes flows, $(u^ε, v^ε)$ to the classical Prandtl boundary layer, $(\bar{u}_p, \bar{v}_p)$, posed on the domain $(0, \infty) \times (0, \infty)$: \begin{equation*} \| u^ε - \bar{u}_p \|_{L^\infty_y} \lesssim \sqrtε \langle x \rangle^{- \frac 1 4 + δ}, \qquad \| v^ε - \sqrtε \bar{v}_p \|_{L^\infty_y} \lesssim \sqrtε \langle x \rangle^{- \frac 1 2}. \end{equation*} This validates Prandtl's boundary layer theory \textit{globally} in the $x$-variable for a large class of boundary layers, including the entire one parameter family…
We find a new class of data for which the Prandtl boundary layer equations and the hydrostatic Euler equations are locally in time well-posed. In the case of the Prandtl equations, we assume that the initial datum $u_0$ is monotone on a number of intervals (on some strictly increasing on some strictly decreasing) and analytic on the complement and show that the local existence and uniqueness hold. The same is true for the hydrostatic Euler equations except that we assume this for the vorticity $ω_0=\partial_y u_0$.
We investigate the stability of boundary layer solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We consider shear flow solutions of Prandtl type : $$ u^ν(t,x,y) \, = \, \big (U^E(t,y) + U^{BL}(t,\frac{y}{\sqrtν})\,, \, 0 \big )\, , \quad 0<ν\ll 1\,. $$ We show that if $U^{BL}$ is monotonic and concave in $Y = y /\sqrtν$ then $u^ν$ is stable over some time interval $(0,T)$, $T$ independent of $ν$, under perturbations with Gevrey regularity in $x$ and Sobolev regularity in $y$. We improve in this way the classical stability results of Sammartino and Caflisch in analytic c…
The existence and uniqueness of the analytic solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition on a half space are proved, based on an application of abstract Cauchy-Kowalewski theorem. These equations arise in the inviscid limit of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary condition in which the slip length is square root of viscosity, as formally derived in [26].
In this paper we shall consider the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with Euler-type initial conditions, i.e. initial conditions which have a non-zero tangential component at the boundary. Under analyticity assumptions for the data, we shall prove that the solution exists for a small time independent of the viscosity. The solution is constructed through a composite asymptotic expansion involving the solutions of the Euler and Prandtl equations, plus an error term. The norm of the error goes to zero with the square root of the viscosity. The Prandtl solution contains a singular term, w…
This paper concerns the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory in the inviscid limit for steady incompressible Navier-Stokes flows. The stationary flows, with small viscosity, are considered on $[0,L]\times \mathbb{R}_{+}$, assuming a no-slip boundary condition over a moving plate at $y=0$. We establish the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansion and its error estimates.
This is the first part of a two paper sequence in which we prove the global-in-x stability of the classical Prandtl boundary layer for the 2D, stationary Navier-Stokes equations. In this part, we provide a construction of an approximate Navier-Stokes solution, obtained by a classical Euler- Prandtl asymptotic expansion. We develop here sharp decay estimates on these quantities. Of independent interest, we establish \textit{without} using the classical von-Mise change of coordinates, proofs of global in x regularity of the Prandtl system. The results of this paper are used in the second part of…
In $1904$, Prandtl introduced his famous boundary layer in order to describe the behavior of solutions of incompressible Navier Stokes equations near a boundary as the viscosity goes to $0$. His Ansatz was that the solution of Navier Stokes equations can be described as a solution of Euler equations, plus a boundary layer corrector, plus a vanishing error term in $L^\infty$ in the inviscid limit. In this paper we prove that, for a class of smooth solutions of Navier Stokes equations, namely for shear layer profiles which are unstable for Rayleigh equations, this Ansatz is false if we consider …
In this paper, we consider the zero-viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes equations in a half space with the Navier friction boundary condition $$ (βu^{\varepsilon}-\varepsilon^γ\partial_y u^{\varepsilon})|_{y=0}=0, $$ where $β$ is a constant and $γ\in (0,1]$. In the case of $γ=1$, the convergence to the Euler equations and the Prandtl equation with the Robin boundary condition is justified for the analytic data. In the case of $γ\in (0,1)$, the convergence to the Euler equations and the linearized Prandtl equation is justified for the data in the Gevrey class $\frac 1 γ$.
In this paper, we consider the zero-viscosity limit of the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations in $(0,L)\times\mathbb{R}^+$ with non-slip boundary conditions. By estimating the stream-function of the remainder, we justify the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions.
In this paper, we study the well-posedness of classical solutions to the nonlinear unsteady Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition in half space in weighted Sobolev spaces. We firstly investigate the monotonic shear flow with Robin boundary condition and the linearized Prandtl-type equations with Robin boundary condition in weighted Sobolev spaces. Due to the degeneracy of the Prandtl equations and the loss of regularity, we apply the Nash-Moser-Hormander iteration scheme to prove the existence of classical solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin boundary condition whe…
In this paper, we establish the mathematical validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory for a class of nonlinear plane parallel flow of nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The convergence for the density and velocity are shown under various Sobolev norms, including the physically important space-time uniform norm, as well as the $L^\infty(H^1)$ norm. It is mentioned that the mathematical validity of the Prandtl boundary layer theory for nonlinear plane parallel flow is generalized to the nonhomogeneous case.
Let the viscosity $\varepsilon \rightarrow 0$ for the 2D steady Navier-Stokes equations in the region $0\leq x\leq L$ and $0\leq y<\infty$ with no slip boundary conditions at $y=0$. For $L<<1$, we justify the validity of the steady Prandtl layer expansion for scaled Prandtl layers, including the celebrated Blasius boundary layer. Our uniform estimates in $\varepsilon$ are achieved through a fixed-point scheme: \begin{equation*} [u^{0}, v^0] \overset{\text{DNS}^{-1}}{\longrightarrow }v\overset{\mathcal{L}^{-1}}{ \longrightarrow }[u^{0}, v^0] \label{fixedpoint} \end{equation*} for solving the Na…
In this paper, we study the full regularity and well-posedness of classical solutions to the nonlinear unsteady Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition in half space. Under Oleinik's monotonicity assumption, we prove the large time existence of classical solutions to the nonlinear Prandtl equations with Robin or Dirichlet boundary condition, when both initial vorticity and the general Euler flow are sufficiently small. For the general Euler flow, the vertical velocity of the Prandtl flow is unbounded. We prove that the Prandtl solutions preserve the full regularities in ou…
We continue the study of the validity of the Prandtl boundary layer expansions in \cite{GZ}, where by estimating the stream-function of the remainder, we proved if the Euler flow is perturbation of shear flows when the width of domain is small. In this paper, we obtain a new derivatives estimate of stream-function away from the boundary layer and then prove the validity of expansions for any non-shear Euler flow, provided the width of domain is small.
In their classical work Caflisch and Sammartino proved the inviscid limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for well-prepared data with analytic regularity in the half-space. Their proof is based on the detailed construction of Prandtl's boundary layer asymptotic expansions. In this paper, we give a direct proof of the inviscid limit for general analytic data without having to construct Prandtl's boundary layer correctors. Our analysis makes use of the boundary vorticity formulation and the abstract Cauchy-Kovalevskaya theorem on analytic boundary layer function spaces that capture…
In this three-part monograph, we prove that steady, incompressible Navier-Stokes flows posed over the moving boundary, $y = 0$, can be decomposed into Euler and Prandtl flows in the inviscid limit globally in $[1,\infty) \times [0,\infty)$, assuming a sufficiently small velocity mismatch. Sharp decay rates and self-similar asymptotics are extracted for both Prandtl and Eulerian layers. We then develop a functional framework to capture precise decay rates of the remainders, and prove the corresponding embedding theorems by establishing weighted estimates for their higher order tangential deriva…
In this paper, we justify the limit from the Navier-Stokes system in a thin domain to the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes/Prandtl system for the convex initial data with Gevrey 9/8 regualrity in $x$.
We investigate the hydrostatic approximation of a hyperbolic version of Navier-Stokes equations, which is obtained by using Cattaneo type law instead of Fourier law, evolving in a thin strip $\R\times (0,\varepsilon)$. The formal limit of these equations is a hyperbolic Prandtl type equation. We first prove the global existence of solutions to these equations under a uniform smallness assumption on the data in Gevrey $2$ class. Then we justify the limit globally-in-time from the anisotropic hyperbolic Navier-Stokes system to the hyperbolic Prandtl system with such Gevrey $2$ class data. Compar…
For steady two-dimensional flows with a single eddy (i.e. nested closed streamlines), Prandtl (1905) and Batchelor (1956) proposed that in the limit of vanishing viscosity the vorticity is constant in an inner region separated from the boundary layer. In this paper, by constructing higher order approximate solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations and establishing the validity of Prandtl boundary layer expansion, we give a rigorous proof of the existence of Prandtl-Batchelor flows on a disk with the wall velocity slightly different from the rigid-rotation. The leading order term of the flow is …
In this paper, we consider the local well-posedness of the Prandtl boundary layer equations that describe the behavior of boundary layer in the small viscosity limit of the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations with non-slip boundary condition. Under the strictly monotonic assumption on the tangential velocity in the normal variable, we apply the Nash-Moser-Hörmander iteration scheme and further develop the energy method introduced in [1] to obtain the well-posedness of the equations locally in time.
In 1980, van Dommelen and Shen provided a numerical simulation that predicts the spontaneous generation of a singularity in the Prandtl boundary layer equations from a smooth initial datum, for a nontrivial Euler background. In this paper we provide a proof of this numerical conjecture by rigorously establishing the finite time blowup of the boundary layer thickness.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the stability of Prandtl boundary layers in the vanishing viscosity limit: $ν\to 0$. In \cite{Grenier}, one of the authors proved that there exists no asymptotic expansion involving one Prandtl's boundary layer with thickness of order $\sqrtν$, which describes the inviscid limit of Navier-Stokes equations. The instability gives rise to a viscous boundary sublayer whose thickness is of order $ν^{3/4}$. In this paper, we point out how the stability of the classical Prandtl's layer is linked to the stability of this sublayer. In particular, we prove that th…
We prove local existence and uniqueness for the two-dimensional Prandtl system in weighted Sobolev spaces under the Oleinik's monotonicity assumption. In particular we do not use the Crocco transform. Our proof is based on a new nonlinear energy estimate for the Prandtl system. This new energy estimate is based on a cancellation property which is valid under the monotonicity assumption. To construct the solution, we use a regularization of the system that preserves this nonlinear structure. This new nonlinear structure may give some insight on the convergence properties from Navier-Stokes syst…
In this paper we study the hydrostatic limit of the Navier-Stokes-alpha model in a very thin striped domain. We derive some Prandtl-type limit equations for this model and we prove the global well-posedness of the limit system for small initial conditions in an appropriate analytic function space.
In this paper, we establish the entropy-entropy production estimate for the ES-BGK model, a generalized version of the BGK model of the Boltzmann equation introduced for better approximation in the Navier-Stokes limit. Our result improves the previous entropy production estimate [39] in that (1) the full range of Prandtl parameters $-1/2\leqν<1$ including the critical case $ν=-1/2$ is covered, and (2) a sharper entropy production bound is obtained. An explicit characterization of the coefficient of the entropy-entropy production estimate is also presented.
We prove new \emph{a priori} estimates for the 3D Euler, the 3D Navier-Stokes and the 2D quasi-geostrophic equations by the method of similarity transforms.
We show that weak solutions of degenerate Navier-Stokes equations converge to the strong solutions of the pressureless Euler system with linear drag term, Newtonian repulsion and quadratic confinement. The proof is based on the relative entropy method using the artificial velocity formulation for the one-dimensional Navier-Stokes system.
We consider the Prandtl boundary layer equations on the half plane, with initial datum that lies in a weighted $H^1$ space with respect to the normal variable, and is real-analytic with respect to the tangential variable. The boundary trace of the horizontal Euler flow is taken to be a constant. We prove that if the Prandtl datum lies within $\varepsilon$ of a stable profile, then the unique solution of the Cauchy problem can be extended at least up to time $T_\varepsilon \geq \exp(\varepsilon^{-1}/ \log(\varepsilon^{-1}))$.
We consider the Euler-Voigt equations and the Navier-Stokes-Voigt equations, which are obtained by an inviscid alpha-regularization from the corresponding equations. The main result we show is the structural stability of the system in term of the variations of both viscosity of regularization parameters.
This work presents an approach to the Navier-Stokes equations that is phrased in unbiased Eulerian coordinates, yet describes objects that have Lagrangian significance: particle paths, their dispersion and diffusion. The commutator between Lagrangian and Eulerian derivatives plays an important role in the Navier-Stokes equations: it contributes a singular perturbation to the Euler equations, in addition to the Laplacian. Bounds for the Lagrangian displacements, their first and second derivatives are obtained without assumptions. Some of these rigorous bounds can be interpreted in terms of the …
We utilize undetermined coefficient method and an iterative method to construct the series solutions of the 3D Cauchy problem for a class of incompressible Navier-Stokes and Euler Equations. Then we can turn the Navier-Stokes Equations (Euler Equations) into the Cauchy problem for finitely (infinitely) many ordinary differential equations. We get the finite series solution of the Navier-Stokes Equations. By using some combinatorial identities techniques, we prove that the sum of the solutions to these ordinary differential equations is an infinite series solution of the Euler Equations in some…
We address the local well-posedness of the hydrostatic Navier-Stokes equations. These equations, sometimes called reduced Navier-Stokes/Prandtl, appear as a formal limit of the Navier-Stokes system in thin domains, under certain constraints on the aspect ratio and the Reynolds number. It is known that without any structural assumption on the initial data, real-analyticity is both necessary and sufficient for the local well-posedness of the system. In this paper we prove that for convex initial data, local well-posedness holds under simple Gevrey regularity.
In this paper, we investigate the vanishing viscosity limit for solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations with a Navier slip boundary condition on general compact and smooth domains in $\mathbf{R}^3$. We first obtain the higher order regularity estimates for the solutions to Prandtl's equation boundary layers. Furthermore, we prove that the strong solution to Navier-Stokes equations converges to the Eulerian one in $C([0,T];H^1(Ω))$ and $L^\infty((0,T)\timesø)$, where $T$ is independent of the viscosity, provided that initial velocity is regular enough. Furthermore, rates of convergence are obt…
This paper is concerned with the vanishing viscosity and magnetic resistivity limit for the two-dimensional steady incompressible MHD system on the half plane with no-slip boundary condition on velocity field and perfectly conducting wall condition on magnetic field. We prove the nonlinear stability of shear flows of Prandtl type with nondegenerate tangential magnetic field, but without any positivity or monotonicity assumption on the velocity field. It is in sharp contrast to the steady Navier-Stokes equations and reflects the stabilization effect of magnetic field. Unlike the unsteady MHD sy…
We prove the existence of a solution for the second order system of partial differential equations $\partial_t f = ν\cdotΔf + g\cdot\nabla f + h\cdot f + k$ by a Montel space version of Arzelà--Ascoli and bound all Schwartz semi-norms. We find that for the Euler and the Navier--Stokes equations the vorticity remains a Schwartz function as long as the classical solution exists. Our approach is not affected by viscosity. It treats the hyperbolic Euler and the parabolic Navier--Stokes equation simultaneously.

We study blow-up rates and the blow-up profiles of possible asymptotically self-similar singularities of the 3D Euler equations, where the sense of convergence and self-similarity are considered in various sense. We extend much further, in particular, the previous nonexistence results of self-similar/asymptotically self-similar singularities obtained in \cite{cha1,cha2}. Some implications the notions for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are also deduced. Generalization of the self-similar transforms is also considered, and by appropriate choice of the transform we obtain new \textit{a priori} es…
We compute the solutions of Prandtl's and Navier-Stokes equations for the two dimensional flow induced by a rectilinear vortex interacting with a boundary in the half plane. For this initial datum Prandtl's equation develops, in a finite time, a separation singularity. We investigate the different stages of unsteady separation for Navier-Stokes solution at different Reynolds numbers $Re=10^3-10^5$, and we show the presence of a large-scale interaction between the viscous boundary layer and the inviscid outer flow. We also see a subsequent stage, characterized by the presence of a small-scale i…
We consider the zero viscosity limit of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with non-slip boundary condition in the half-space for the initial vorticity located away from the boundary. By using the vorticity formulation and Cauchy-Kowaleskaya theorem, Maekawa proved the local in time convergence of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half- plane to the Euler equations outside a boundary layer and to the Prandtl equations in the boundary layer. In this paper, we develop the direct energy method to generalize Maekawa's result to the half-space.
Non-uniqueness of Regular Solutions for Incompressible Static Euler Equations with Given Boundary Conditions and Turbulent Global Solutions of Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations
This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to the fact that the negative sign of the exponent of $R$ in (2.20) is not allowed by the second inequality of (2.2), and thus the desired vanishing in (2.20) could not be obtained by this method.
