In 1944 Lars Onsager published the exact partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model on the infinite square lattice in terms of a definite integral. Only in the literature of the last decade, however, has it been recast in terms of special functions. Until now all known formulas for the partition function in terms of special functions have been restricted to the important special case of the isotropic Ising model with symmetric couplings. Indeed, the anisotropic model is more challenging because there are two couplings and hence two reduced temperatures, one for each of the two axes of the square lattice. Hence, standard special functions of one variable are inadequate to the task. Here, we reformulate the partition function of the anisotropic Ising model in terms of the Kampé de Fériet function, which is a double hypergeometric function in two variables that is more general than the Appell hypergeometric functions. Finally, we present hypergeometric formulas for the generating function of multipolygons of given length on the infinite square lattice, for isotropic as well as anisotropic edge weights. For the isotropic case, the results allow easy calculation, to arbitrary order, of the celebrated series found by Cyril Domb.
The zero-field partition function of two-dimensional nearest neighbor Ising models of square lattices is derived in terms of the generalized hypergeometric series by evaluating the integral in the exact solution of Onsager. An approximate equation for the partition function in terms of Chebyshev polynomials is also provided.
Employing heuristic susceptibility equations in conjunction with the well-known critical exponents, the magnetization and partition function for two-dimensional nearest neighbour Ising models are formulated in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions. The isomorphism existing between the Bragg-Williams approximation and the exact solution of Onsager is pointed out. The precise manner in which the critical exponents influence the partition functions is pointed out.
In 1944 Onsager published the formula for the partition function of the Ising model for the infinite square lattice. He was able to express the internal energy in terms of a special function, but he left the free energy as a definite integral. Seven decades later, the partition function and free energy have yet to be written in closed form, even with the aid of special functions. Here we evaluate the definite integral explicitly, using hypergeometric series. Let $β$ denote the reciprocal temperature, $J$ the coupling and $f$ the free energy per spin. We prove that $-βf = \ln(2 \cosh 2K) - κ^2\…
The anisotropic two-layer Ising model is studied by the phenomenological renormalizaiton group method. It is found that the anisotropic two-layer Ising model with symmetric couplings belongs to the same universality class as the two dimensional Ising model.
Using an exact solution of the one-dimensional (1D) quantum transverse-field Ising model (TFIM), we calculate the critical exponents of the two-dimensional (2D) anisotropic classical Ising model (IM). We verify that the exponents are the same as those of isotropic classical IM. Our approach provides an alternative means of obtaining and verifying these well-known results.
Motivated by experiments on (Sr,Ca,La)_14 Cu_24 O_41, a two-dimensional Ising model with mobile defects and a two-dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet have been proposed and studied recently. We extend previous investigations by analysing phase diagrams of both models in external fields using mainly Monte Carlo techniques. In the Ising case, the phase transition is due to the thermal instability of defect stripes, in the Heisenberg case additional spin-flop structures play an essential role.
The critical temperature of a three-dimensional Ising model on a simple cubic lattice with different coupling strengths along all three spatial directions is calculated via the transfer matrix method and a finite size scaling for L x L oo clusters (L=2 and 3). The results obtained are compared with available calculations. An exact analytical solution is found for the 2 x 2 oo Ising chain with fully anisotropic interactions (arbitrary J_x, J_y and J_z).
Hierarchical lattices that constitute spatially anisotropic systems are introduced. These lattices provide exact solutions for hierarchical models and, simultaneously, approximate solutions for uniaxially or fully anisotropic d=3 physical models. The global phase diagrams, with d=2 and d=1 to d=3 crossovers, are obtained for Ising, XY magnetic models and percolation systems, including crossovers from algebraic order to true long-range order.
The Binder cumulant at the phase transition of Ising models on square lattices with various ferromagnetic nearest and next-nearest neighbour couplings is determined using mainly Monte Carlo techniques. We discuss the possibility to relate the value of the critical cumulant in the isotropic, nearest neighbour and in the anisotropic cases to each other by means of a scale transformation in rectangular geometry, to pinpoint universal and nonuniversal features.
We prove the validity of multiparameter universality for the exact critical bulk correlation functions of the anisotropic square-lattice and triangular-lattice Ising models on the basis of the exact scaling structure of the correlation function of the two-dimensional anisotropic scalar $φ^4$ model with four nonuniversal parameters. The correlation functions exhibit a directional nonuniversality due to principal axes whose orientation depends on microscopic details. In particular we determine the exact anisotropy matrices governing the bulk and finite-size critical behavior of the $φ^4$ and Isi…
The influence of a layered aperiodic modulation of the couplings on the critical behaviour of the two-dimensional Ising model is studied in the case of marginal perturbations. The aperiodicity is found to induce anisotropic scaling. The anisotropy exponent z, given by the sum of the surface magnetization scaling dimensions, depends continuously on the modulation amplitude. Thus these systems are scale invariant but not conformally invariant at the critical point.
The field-induced Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition in the ground state of the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model is studied by the level-spectroscopy method. We analyze dimensions of operators around the BKT line, and estimate the BKT point $H_{\rm c}\simeq0.5229\pm0.001$, which is followed by a level-consistency check to demonstrate the accuracy of our estimate. Further we investigate the anisotropic case to clarify the stability of the field-induced string-density plateau against an incommensurate liquid state by the density-matrix renormalization-group method.
The finite-size scaling functions for anisotropic three-dimensional Ising models of size $L_1 \times L_1 \times aL_1$ ($a$: anisotropy parameter) are studied by Monte Carlo simulations. We study the $a$ dependence of finite-size scaling functions of the Binder parameter $g$ and the magnetization distribution function $p(m)$. We have shown that the finite-size scaling functions for $p(m)$ at the critical temperature change from a two-peak structure to a single-peak one by increasing or decreasing $a$ from 1. We also study the finite-size scaling near the critical temperature of the layered squa…
Using transfer-matrix extended phenomenological renormalization-group methods [M.A.Yurishchev, Nucl. Phys. B (Proc. Suppl.) 83-84, 727 (2000); hep-lat/9908019; J. Exp. Theor. Phys. 91, 332 (2000); cond-mat/0108002] the improved estimates for the critical temperature of spin-1/2 Ising model on a simple-cubic lattice with partly anisotropic coupling strengths ${\vec J}=(J',J',J)$ are obtained. Universality of both fundamental critical exponents $y_t$ and $y_h$ is confirmed. We show also that the critical finite-size scaling amplitude ratios $A_{χ^{(4)}}A_κ/A_χ^2$, $A_{κ^{''}}/A_χ$, and $A_{κ^{(4…
Using transfer-matrix extended phenomenological renormalization-group methods the critical properties of spin-1/2 Ising model on a simple-cubic lattice with partly anisotropic coupling strengths ${\vec J}=(J',J',J)$ are studied. Universality of both fundamental critical exponents $y_t$ and $y_h$ is confirmed. It is shown that the critical finite-size scaling amplitude ratios $U=A_{χ^{(4)}}A_κ/A_χ^2$, $Y_1=A_{κ^{''}}/A_χ$, and $Y_2=A_{κ^{(4)}}/A_{χ^{(4)}}$ are independent of the lattice anisotropy parameter $Δ=J'/J$. By this for the last above invariant of the three-dimensional Ising universali…
The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model in the presence of an anisotropic crystalline field is treated exactly within the framework of an extended star-triangle mapping transformation. The exact results for the phase diagrams, magnetization, internal energy and specific heat are derived and discussed in detail. The relevant mapping suggests that an isotropic in-plane crystal field (D^x = D^y) leads to the same effects as the hard-axis crystal field (D^z), whereas the in-plane anisotropy (D^x \neq D^y) is responsible also for the randomization of the magnetic ordering (transverse-field like e…
Magnetic properties of a ternary-spin Ising model on the decorated square lattice are studied within a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Depending on the mutual ratio between exchange interactions and the single-ion anisotropy, there appear six different phases in the ground state. The magnetic order of these phases together with the critical behaviour and corresponding magnetization curves are discussed in detail.
We investigate the triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic Ising model with a spatially anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic coupling, which was first discussed by Kitatani and Oguchi. By employing the effective geometric factor, we analyze the scaling dimensions of the operators around the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition lines, and determine the global phase diagram. Our numerical data exhibit that two types of BKT-transition lines separate the intermediate critical region from the ordered and disordered phases, and they do not merge into a single curve in the antifer…
Chen and Dohm predicted theoretically in 2004 that the widely believed universality principle is violated in the Ising model on the simple cubic lattice with more than only six nearest neighbours. Schulte and Drope by Monte Carlo simulations found such violation, but not in the predicted direction. Selke and Shchur tested the square lattice. Here we check only this universality for the susceptibility ratio near the critical point. For this purpose we study first the standard Ising model on a simple cubic lattice with six nearest neighbours, then with six nearest and twelve next-nearest neighbo…
We study the correlation function of middle spins, i. e. of spins on intermediate sites between two adjacent parallel lattice axes, of the spatially anisotropic Ising antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. It is given rigorously by a Toeplitz determinant. The large-distance behaviour of this correlation function is obtained by analytic methods. For shorter distances we evaluate the Toeplitz determinant numerically. The correlation function is found to vanish exactly on a line J_d(T) in the T-J (temperature vs. coupling constant) phase diagram. This disorder line divides the phase diagram into …
Magnetic frustrations and dimensionality play an important role in determining the nature of the magnetic long-range order and how it melts at temperatures above the ordering transition $T_N$. In this work, we use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study these phenomena in a class of frustrated Ising spin models in two spatial dimensions. We find that the melting of the magnetic long-range order into an isotropic gas-like paramagnet proceeds via an intermediate stage where the classical spins remain anisotropically correlated. This correlated paramagnet exists in a temperature range $T_N <…
We use numerical transfer-matrix methods, together with finite-size scaling and conformal invariance concepts, to discuss critical properties of two-dimensional honeycomb-lattice Ising spin-1/2 magnets, with couplings which are antiferromagnetic along at least one lattice axis, in a uniform external field. We focus mainly on the shape of the phase diagram in field-temperature parameter space; in order to do so, both the order and universality class of the underlying phase transition are examined. Our results indicate that, in one particular case studied, the critical line has a horizontal sect…
We have studied the anisotropic three-dimensional nearest-neighbor Ising model with competitive interactions in an uniform longitudinal magnetic field $H$. The model consists of ferromagnetic interaction $J_{x}(J_{z})$ in the $x(z)$ direction and antiferromagnetic interaction $J_{y}$ in the $y$ direction. We have compared our calculations within a effective-field theory in clusters with four spins (EFT-4) in the simple cubic (sc) lattice with traditional Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The phase diagrams in the $h-k_{B}T/J_{x}$ plane ($h=H/J_{x}$) were obtained for the particular case $λ_{1}=J_{…
Anisotropy effects on the finite-size critical behavior of a two-dimensional Ising model on a general triangular lattice in an infinite-strip geometry with periodic, antiperiodic, and free boundary conditions (bc) in the finite direction are investigated. Exact results are obtained for the scaling functions of the finite-size contributions to the free energy density. With xi_> the largest and xi_< the smallest bulk correlation length at a given temperature near criticality, we find that the dependence of these functions on the ratio xi_< / xi_> and on the angle parameterizing the orientation o…
We present a Monte Carlo study of the magnetic properties of an Ising multilayer ferrimagnet. The system consists of two kinds of non-equivalent planes, one of which is site-diluted. All intralayer couplings are ferromagnetic. The different kinds of planes are stacked alternately and the interlayer couplings are antiferromagnetic. We perform the simulations using the Wolff algorithm and employ multiple histogram reweighting and finite-size scaling methods to analyze the data with special emphasis on the study of compensation phenomena. Compensation and critical temperatures of the system are o…
The ground state and the thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 asymmetric diamond Ising--Heisenberg chain are considered. For the $XYZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg interaction, the exact calculations of the free energy, entropy, heat capacity, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility are performed using the method of decoration-iteration transformation. In the case of antiferromagnetic interactions (Ising and $XXZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg ones), the ground state, magnetization process, temperature dependence of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity are investigated. The influence of…
The Ising model in the presence of a random field, drawn from the asymmetric and anisotropic trimodal probability distribution $P(h_{i})=p\; δ(h_{i}-h_{0}) + q δ(h_{i}+ λ*h_{0}) + r δ(h_{i})$, is investigated. The partial probabilities $p, q, r$ take on values within the interval $[0,1]$ consistent with the constraint $p+q+r=1$, asymmetric distribution, $h_{i}$ is the random field variable with basic absolute value $h_{0}$ (strength); $λ$ is the competition parameter, which is the ratio between the respective strength of the random magnetic field in the two principal directions $(+z)$ and $(-z…
The Ashkin-Teller (AT) model is a generalization of Ising 2-d to a four states spin model; it can be written in the form of two Ising layers (in general with different couplings) interacting via a four-spin interaction. It was conjectured long ago (by Kadanoff and Wegner, Wu and Lin, Baxter and others) that AT has in general two critical points, and that universality holds, in the sense that the critical exponents are the same as in the Ising model, except when the couplings of the two Ising layers are equal (isotropic case). We obtain an explicit expression for the specific heat from which we…
We present the reduction of the correlation functions of the Ising model on the anisotropic square lattice to complete elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kind, the extension of Kramers-Wannier duality to anisotropic correlation functions, and the linear differential equations for these anisotropic correlations. More precisely, we show that the anisotropic correlation functions are homogeneous polynomials of the complete elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kind. We give the exact dual transformation matching the correlation functions and the dual correlation functio…
The Binder cumulant at the phase transition of Ising models on square lattices with ferromagnetic couplings between nearest neighbors and with competing antiferromagnetic couplings between next--nearest neighbors, along only one diagonal, is determined using Monte Carlo techniques. In the phase diagram a disorder line occurs separating regions with monotonically decaying and with oscillatory spin--spin correlations. Findings on the variation of the critical cumulant with the ratio of the two interaction strengths are compared to related recent results based on renormalization group calculation…
Analytic predictions have been derived recently by V. Dohm and S. Wessel, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 126}, 060601 (2021) from anisotropic $φ^4$ theory and conformal field theory for the amplitude ${\cal F}_c$ of the critical free energy of finite anisotropic systems in the two-dimensional Ising universality class. These predictions employ the hypothesis of multiparameter universality. We test these predictions by means of high-precision Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for ${\cal F}_c$ of the Ising model on a square lattice with isotropic ferromagnetic couplings between nearest neighbors and with an an…
Two-dimensional layered aperiodic Ising systems are studied in the extreme anisotropic limit where they correspond to quantum Ising chains in a transverse field. The modulation of the couplings follows an aperiodic sequence generated through substitution. According to Luck's criterion, such a perturbation becomes marginal when the wandering exponent of the sequence vanishes. Three marginal sequences are considered: the period-doubling, paper-folding and three-folding sequences. They correspond to bulk perturbations for which the critical temperature is shifted. The surface magnetization is obt…
The non-equilibrium phase transition in driven two-dimensional Ising models with two different geometries is investigated using Monte Carlo methods as well as analytical calculations. The models show dissipation through fluctuation induced friction near the critical point. We first consider high driving velocities and demonstrate that both systems are in the same universality class and undergo a strongly anisotropic non-equilibrium phase transition, with anisotropy exponent θ=3. Within a field theoretical ansatz the simulation results are confirmed. The crossover from Ising to mean field behav…
The spatially uniaxially anisotropic d=3 Ising spin glass is solved exactly on a hierarchical lattice. Five different ordered phases, namely ferromagnetic, columnar, layered, antiferromagnetic, and spin-glass phases, are found in the global phase diagram. The spin-glass phase is more extensive when randomness is introduced within the planes than when it is introduced in lines along one direction. Phase diagram cross-sections, with no Nishimori symmetry, with Nishimori symmetry lines, or entirely imbedded into Nishimori symmetry, are studied. The boundary between the ferromagnetic and spin-glas…
We study the $\pm J$ three-dimensional Ising model with a spatially uniaxially anisotropic bond randomness on the simple cubic lattice. The $\pm J$ random exchange is applied in the $xy$ planes, whereas in the z direction only a ferromagnetic exchange is used. After sketching the phase diagram and comparing it with the corresponding isotropic case, the system is studied, at the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition line, using parallel tempering and a convenient concentration of antiferromagnetic bonds ($p_z=0 ; p_{xy}=0.176$). The numerical data point out clearly to a second-order ferromagnet…
A four-state clock ferromagnetic model is studied in the presence of different configurations of anisotropies and random fields. The model is considered in the limit of infinite-range interactions, for which the mean-field approach becomes exact. Both representations of Cartesian spin components and two Ising variables are used, in terms of which the physical properties and phase diagrams are discussed. The random fields follow bimodal probability distributions and the richest criticality is found when the fields, applied in the two Ising systems, are not correlated. The phase diagrams present…
We present analytical results for the strongly anisotropic random field Ising model, consisting of weakly interacting spin chains. We combine the mean-field treatment of interchain interactions with an analytical calculation of the average chain free energy (``chain mean-field'' approach). The free energy is found using a mapping on a Brownian motion model. We calculate the order parameter and give expressions for the critical random magnetic field strength below which the ground state exhibits long range order and for the critical temperature as a function of the random magnetic field strengt…
The exact critical Casimir amplitude is derived for anisotropic systems within the $d=2$ Ising universality class by combining conformal field theory (CFT) with anisotropic $φ^4$ theory. Explicit results are presented for the general anisotropic scalar $φ^4$ model and for the fully anisotropic triangular-lattice Ising model in finite rectangular and infinite strip geometries with periodic boundary conditions (PBC). These results demonstrate the validity of multiparameter universality for confined anisotropic systems and the nonuniversality of the critical Casimir amplitude. We find an unexpect…
In quantum spin systems obeying hyperscaling, the probability distribution of the total magnetization takes on a universal scaling form at criticality. We obtain this scaling function exactly for the ground state and first excited state of the critical quantum Ising spin chain. This is achieved through a remarkable relation to the partition function of the anisotropic Kondo problem, which can be computed by exploiting the integrability of the system.
It is known that there is no phase transition down to zero temperature in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on spatially anisotropic triangular lattices, in which the exchange coupling of one direction is stronger than those of other two directions. In the model, the low-temperature physics is governed by domain-wall excitations (defects) residing on bonds of the strong-coupling direction. In this letter, we show that an additional small attractive interaction between defects (a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the weak-coupling direction) leads to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Th…
We consider the anisotropic Ising model on the triangular lattice with finite boundaries, and use Kaufman's spinor method to calculate low-temperature series expansions for the partition function to high order. From these we can obtain 108-term series expansions for the bulk, surface and corner free energies. We extrapolate these to all terms and thereby conjecture the exact results for each. Our results agree with the exactly known bulk free energy. For the isotropic case, they also agree with Vernier and Jacobsen's conjecture for the $60^{\circ}$ corners, and with Cardy and Peschel's conform…
We present new results for the ordering process of a two-dimensional Ising model with anisotropic frustrating next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We concentrate on a specific wide temperature and parameter region to confirm the existence of two particular phases of the model. The first phase is an incommensurate algebraically-ordered (floating) phase emerging at the transition from the paramagnetic high-temperature phase. Then the model undergoes a transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered second phase with diagonal ferromagnetic stripes (ordering wave vector $\vec q = (π/2, π/2)$). We an…
A new finite-size scaling approach based on the transfer matrix method is developed to calculate the critical temperature of anisotropic two-layer Ising ferromagnet, on strips of r wide sites of square lattices. The reduced internal energy per site has been accurately calculated for the ferromagnetic case, with the nearest neighbor couplings Kx, Ky (where Kx and Ky are the nearest neighbor interactions within each layer in the x and y directions, respectively) and with inter-layer coupling Kz, using different size-limited lattices. The calculated energies for different lattice sizes intersect …
We study dimensional crossover in Ising systems at complex temperatures by comparing three types of system: the infinite isotropic 2D Ising model; the infinite anisotropic 2D Ising model; and Ising ladders with a finite number of legs. In particular we present evidence, from both tensor-network calculations and numerical evaluations based on the exact solution of the model, that the infinite anisotropic 2D Ising model exhibits long-range spatially modulated magnetization in certain regions of the complex-temperature plane. We discuss the physics of the special unitary points that exists in the…

We study the anisotropic Heisenberg (XYZ) spin-1/2 chain placed in a magnetic field pointing along the x-axis. We use bosonization and a renormalization group analysis to show that the model has a non-trivial fixed point at a certain value of the XY anisotropy a and the magnetic field h. Hence, there is a line of critical points in the (a,h) plane on which the system is gapless, even though the Hamiltonian has no continuous symmetry. The quantum critical line corresponds to a spin-flop transition; it separates two gapped phases in one of which the Z_2 symmetry of the Hamiltonian is broken. Our…
Large-scale Monte Carlo simulations are used to explore the effect of quenched disorder on one dimensional, non-equilibrium kinetic Ising models with locally broken spin symmetry, at zero temperature (the symmetry is broken through spin-flip rates that differ for '+' and '-' spins). The model is found to exhibit a continuous phase transition to an absorbing state. The associated critical behavior is studied at zero branching rate of kinks, through analysis spreading of '+' and '-' spins and, of the kink density. Impurities exert a strong effect on the critical behavior only for a particular ch…
Based on the results published recently [SciPost Phys. 7, 026 (2019)], the influence of surfaces and boundary fields are calculated for the ferromagnetic anisotropic square lattice Ising model on finite lattices as well as in the finite-size scaling limit. Starting with the open cylinder, we independently apply boundary fields on both sides which can be either homogeneous or staggered, representing different combinations of boundary conditions. We confirm several predictions from scaling theory, conformal field theory and renormalisation group theory: we explicitly show that anisotropic coupli…
We present detailed calculations for the partition function and the free energy of the finite two-dimensional square lattice Ising model with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions, variable aspect ratio, and anisotropic couplings, as well as for the corresponding universal free energy finite-size scaling functions. Therefore, we review the dimer mapping, as well as the interplay between its topology and the different types of boundary conditions. As a central result, we show how both the finite system as well as the scaling form decay into contributions for the bulk, a characteristic f…
Using a real-space renormalization-group approximation, we study the anisotropic quantum Heisenberg model on hierarchical lattices, with interactions following aperiodic sequences. Three different sequences are considered, with relevant and irrelevant fluctuations, according to the Luck-Harris criterion. The phase diagram is discussed as a function of the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ (such that $Δ=0$ and $Δ=1$ correspond to the isotropic Heisenberg and Ising models, respectively). We find three different types of phase diagrams, with general characteristics: the isotropic Heisenberg plane is alway…
The spin-1/2 Ising model on the bow-tie lattice is exactly solved by establishing a precise mapping relationship with its corresponding free-fermion eight-vertex model. Ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams are obtained for the anisotropic bow-tie lattice with three different exchange interactions along three different spatial directions.
The two-dimensional ferromagnetic anisotropic Ashkin-Teller model is investigated through a real-space renormalization-group approach. The critical frontier, separating five distinct phases, recover all the known exacts results for the square lattice. The correlation length $(ν_T)$ and crossover $(ϕ)$ critical exponents are also calculated. With the only exception of the four-state Potts critical point, the entire phase diagram belongs to the Ising universality class.
Within the real space renormalization group we obtain the phase portrait of the anisotropic quantum XY model on square lattice in presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. The model is characterized by two parameters, $λ$ corresponding to XY anisotropy, and $D$ corresponding to the strength of DM interaction. The flow portrait of the model is governed by two global Ising-Kitaev attractors at $(λ=\pm1,D=0)$ and a repeller line, $λ=0$. Renormalization flow of concurrence suggests that the $λ=0$ line corresponds to a topological phase transition. The gap starts at zero on this repeller …
