The non-equilibrium phase transition in driven two-dimensional Ising models with two different geometries is investigated using Monte Carlo methods as well as analytical calculations. The models show dissipation through fluctuation induced friction near the critical point. We first consider high driving velocities and demonstrate that both systems are in the same universality class and undergo a strongly anisotropic non-equilibrium phase transition, with anisotropy exponent θ=3. Within a field theoretical ansatz the simulation results are confirmed. The crossover from Ising to mean field behavior in dependency of system size and driving velocity is analyzed using crossover scaling. It turns out that for all finite velocities the phase transition becomes strongly anisotropic in the thermodynamic limit.
A driven Ising model with friction due to magnetic correlations has recently been proposed by Kadau et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 137205 (2008)). The non-equilibrium phase transition present in this system is investigated in detail using analytical methods as well as Monte Carlo simulations. In the limit of high driving velocities $v$ the model shows mean field behavior due to dimensional reduction and can be solved exactly for various geometries. The simulations are performed with three different single spin flip rates: the common Metropolis and Glauber rates as well as a multiplicative rate.…
Phase Diagrams and Crossover in Spatially Anisotropic d=3 Ising, XY Magnetic and Percolation Systems: Exact Renormalization-Group Solutions of Hierarchical Models
We prove the validity of multiparameter universality for the exact critical bulk correlation functions of the anisotropic square-lattice and triangular-lattice Ising models on the basis of the exact scaling structure of the correlation function of the two-dimensional anisotropic scalar $φ^4$ model with four nonuniversal parameters. The correlation functions exhibit a directional nonuniversality due to principal axes whose orientation depends on microscopic details. In particular we determine the exact anisotropy matrices governing the bulk and finite-size critical behavior of the $φ^4$ and Isi…
We present the reduction of the correlation functions of the Ising model on the anisotropic square lattice to complete elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kind, the extension of Kramers-Wannier duality to anisotropic correlation functions, and the linear differential equations for these anisotropic correlations. More precisely, we show that the anisotropic correlation functions are homogeneous polynomials of the complete elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kind. We give the exact dual transformation matching the correlation functions and the dual correlation functio…
Based on the results published recently [SciPost Phys. 7, 026 (2019)], the influence of surfaces and boundary fields are calculated for the ferromagnetic anisotropic square lattice Ising model on finite lattices as well as in the finite-size scaling limit. Starting with the open cylinder, we independently apply boundary fields on both sides which can be either homogeneous or staggered, representing different combinations of boundary conditions. We confirm several predictions from scaling theory, conformal field theory and renormalisation group theory: we explicitly show that anisotropic coupli…
We present detailed calculations for the partition function and the free energy of the finite two-dimensional square lattice Ising model with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions, variable aspect ratio, and anisotropic couplings, as well as for the corresponding universal free energy finite-size scaling functions. Therefore, we review the dimer mapping, as well as the interplay between its topology and the different types of boundary conditions. As a central result, we show how both the finite system as well as the scaling form decay into contributions for the bulk, a characteristic f…
In 1944 Lars Onsager published the exact partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model on the infinite square lattice in terms of a definite integral. Only in the literature of the last decade, however, has it been recast in terms of special functions. Until now all known formulas for the partition function in terms of special functions have been restricted to the important special case of the isotropic Ising model with symmetric couplings. Indeed, the anisotropic model is more challenging because there are two couplings and hence two reduced temperatures, one for each of the two axes of…
The Binder cumulant at the phase transition of Ising models on square lattices with ferromagnetic couplings between nearest neighbors and with competing antiferromagnetic couplings between next--nearest neighbors, along only one diagonal, is determined using Monte Carlo techniques. In the phase diagram a disorder line occurs separating regions with monotonically decaying and with oscillatory spin--spin correlations. Findings on the variation of the critical cumulant with the ratio of the two interaction strengths are compared to related recent results based on renormalization group calculation…
We theoretically study the phenomenon of self-propulsion through Casimir forces in thermal non-equilibrium. Using fluctuational electrodynamics, we derive a formula for the self-propulsion force for an arbitrary small object in two scenarios, i) for the object being isolated, and ii) for the object being close to a planar surface. In the latter case, the self-propulsion force (i.e., the force parallel to the surface) increases with decreasing distance, i.e., it couples to the near-field. We numerically calculate the lateral force acting on a hot spheroid near a surface and show that it can be …
Global phase diagram and six-state clock universality behavior in the triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model with anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor coupling: Level-spectroscopy approach
We consider the anisotropic Ising model on the triangular lattice with finite boundaries, and use Kaufman's spinor method to calculate low-temperature series expansions for the partition function to high order. From these we can obtain 108-term series expansions for the bulk, surface and corner free energies. We extrapolate these to all terms and thereby conjecture the exact results for each. Our results agree with the exactly known bulk free energy. For the isotropic case, they also agree with Vernier and Jacobsen's conjecture for the $60^{\circ}$ corners, and with Cardy and Peschel's conform…
We study the correlation function of middle spins, i. e. of spins on intermediate sites between two adjacent parallel lattice axes, of the spatially anisotropic Ising antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. It is given rigorously by a Toeplitz determinant. The large-distance behaviour of this correlation function is obtained by analytic methods. For shorter distances we evaluate the Toeplitz determinant numerically. The correlation function is found to vanish exactly on a line J_d(T) in the T-J (temperature vs. coupling constant) phase diagram. This disorder line divides the phase diagram into …
Magnetic frustrations and dimensionality play an important role in determining the nature of the magnetic long-range order and how it melts at temperatures above the ordering transition $T_N$. In this work, we use large-scale Monte Carlo simulations to study these phenomena in a class of frustrated Ising spin models in two spatial dimensions. We find that the melting of the magnetic long-range order into an isotropic gas-like paramagnet proceeds via an intermediate stage where the classical spins remain anisotropically correlated. This correlated paramagnet exists in a temperature range $T_N <…
We use numerical transfer-matrix methods, together with finite-size scaling and conformal invariance concepts, to discuss critical properties of two-dimensional honeycomb-lattice Ising spin-1/2 magnets, with couplings which are antiferromagnetic along at least one lattice axis, in a uniform external field. We focus mainly on the shape of the phase diagram in field-temperature parameter space; in order to do so, both the order and universality class of the underlying phase transition are examined. Our results indicate that, in one particular case studied, the critical line has a horizontal sect…
We have studied the anisotropic three-dimensional nearest-neighbor Ising model with competitive interactions in an uniform longitudinal magnetic field $H$. The model consists of ferromagnetic interaction $J_{x}(J_{z})$ in the $x(z)$ direction and antiferromagnetic interaction $J_{y}$ in the $y$ direction. We have compared our calculations within a effective-field theory in clusters with four spins (EFT-4) in the simple cubic (sc) lattice with traditional Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. The phase diagrams in the $h-k_{B}T/J_{x}$ plane ($h=H/J_{x}$) were obtained for the particular case $λ_{1}=J_{…
We study the $\pm J$ three-dimensional Ising model with a spatially uniaxially anisotropic bond randomness on the simple cubic lattice. The $\pm J$ random exchange is applied in the $xy$ planes, whereas in the z direction only a ferromagnetic exchange is used. After sketching the phase diagram and comparing it with the corresponding isotropic case, the system is studied, at the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition line, using parallel tempering and a convenient concentration of antiferromagnetic bonds ($p_z=0 ; p_{xy}=0.176$). The numerical data point out clearly to a second-order ferromagnet…
Critical temperature and density of spin-flips in the anisotropic random field Ising model

It is known that there is no phase transition down to zero temperature in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on spatially anisotropic triangular lattices, in which the exchange coupling of one direction is stronger than those of other two directions. In the model, the low-temperature physics is governed by domain-wall excitations (defects) residing on bonds of the strong-coupling direction. In this letter, we show that an additional small attractive interaction between defects (a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the weak-coupling direction) leads to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Th…
The diagonal spin-spin correlations $ \langle σ_{0,0}σ_{N,N} \rangle $ of the Ising model on a triangular lattice with general couplings in the three directions are evaluated in terms of a solution to a three-variable extension of the sixth Painlevé system, namely a Garnier system. This identification, which is accomplished using the theory of bi-orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with regular semi-classical weights, has an additional consequence whereby the correlations are characterised by a simple system of coupled, nonlinear recurrence relations in the spin separation $ N \in \mathb…
Anisotropy effects on the finite-size critical behavior of a two-dimensional Ising model on a general triangular lattice in an infinite-strip geometry with periodic, antiperiodic, and free boundary conditions (bc) in the finite direction are investigated. Exact results are obtained for the scaling functions of the finite-size contributions to the free energy density. With xi_> the largest and xi_< the smallest bulk correlation length at a given temperature near criticality, we find that the dependence of these functions on the ratio xi_< / xi_> and on the angle parameterizing the orientation o…
We present new results for the ordering process of a two-dimensional Ising model with anisotropic frustrating next-nearest-neighbor interactions. We concentrate on a specific wide temperature and parameter region to confirm the existence of two particular phases of the model. The first phase is an incommensurate algebraically-ordered (floating) phase emerging at the transition from the paramagnetic high-temperature phase. Then the model undergoes a transition to an antiferromagnetically ordered second phase with diagonal ferromagnetic stripes (ordering wave vector $\vec q = (π/2, π/2)$). We an…
We present a Monte Carlo study of the magnetic properties of an Ising multilayer ferrimagnet. The system consists of two kinds of non-equivalent planes, one of which is site-diluted. All intralayer couplings are ferromagnetic. The different kinds of planes are stacked alternately and the interlayer couplings are antiferromagnetic. We perform the simulations using the Wolff algorithm and employ multiple histogram reweighting and finite-size scaling methods to analyze the data with special emphasis on the study of compensation phenomena. Compensation and critical temperatures of the system are o…
The ground state and the thermodynamics of a spin-1/2 asymmetric diamond Ising--Heisenberg chain are considered. For the $XYZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg interaction, the exact calculations of the free energy, entropy, heat capacity, magnetization, and magnetic susceptibility are performed using the method of decoration-iteration transformation. In the case of antiferromagnetic interactions (Ising and $XXZ$ anisotropic Heisenberg ones), the ground state, magnetization process, temperature dependence of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity are investigated. The influence of…
We study dimensional crossover in Ising systems at complex temperatures by comparing three types of system: the infinite isotropic 2D Ising model; the infinite anisotropic 2D Ising model; and Ising ladders with a finite number of legs. In particular we present evidence, from both tensor-network calculations and numerical evaluations based on the exact solution of the model, that the infinite anisotropic 2D Ising model exhibits long-range spatially modulated magnetization in certain regions of the complex-temperature plane. We discuss the physics of the special unitary points that exists in the…
The Ising model in the presence of a random field, drawn from the asymmetric and anisotropic trimodal probability distribution $P(h_{i})=p\; δ(h_{i}-h_{0}) + q δ(h_{i}+ λ*h_{0}) + r δ(h_{i})$, is investigated. The partial probabilities $p, q, r$ take on values within the interval $[0,1]$ consistent with the constraint $p+q+r=1$, asymmetric distribution, $h_{i}$ is the random field variable with basic absolute value $h_{0}$ (strength); $λ$ is the competition parameter, which is the ratio between the respective strength of the random magnetic field in the two principal directions $(+z)$ and $(-z…
In this paper we conduct a careful multicanonical simulation of the isotropic $3d$ plaquette ("gonihedric") Ising model and confirm that a planar, fuki-nuke type order characterises the low-temperature phase of the model. From consideration of the anisotropic limit of the model we define a class of order parameters which can distinguish the low- and high-temperature phases in both the anisotropic and isotropic cases. We also verify the recently voiced suspicion that the order parameter like behaviour of the standard magnetic susceptibility $χ_m$ seen in previous Metropolis simulations was an a…
Within the real space renormalization group we obtain the phase portrait of the anisotropic quantum XY model on square lattice in presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. The model is characterized by two parameters, $λ$ corresponding to XY anisotropy, and $D$ corresponding to the strength of DM interaction. The flow portrait of the model is governed by two global Ising-Kitaev attractors at $(λ=\pm1,D=0)$ and a repeller line, $λ=0$. Renormalization flow of concurrence suggests that the $λ=0$ line corresponds to a topological phase transition. The gap starts at zero on this repeller …
The anisotropic antiferromagnetic Ising model on the fractal Sierpiński gasket is intensively studied, and a number of exotic properties are disclosed. The ground state phase diagram in the plane of magnetic field-interaction of the system is obtained. The thermodynamic properties of the three plateau phases are probed by exploring the temperature-dependence of magnetization, specific heat, susceptibility and spin-spin correlations. No phase transitions are observed in this model. In the absence of a magnetic field, the unusual temperature dependence of the spin correlation length is obtained …
Analytic predictions have been derived recently by V. Dohm and S. Wessel, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 126}, 060601 (2021) from anisotropic $φ^4$ theory and conformal field theory for the amplitude ${\cal F}_c$ of the critical free energy of finite anisotropic systems in the two-dimensional Ising universality class. These predictions employ the hypothesis of multiparameter universality. We test these predictions by means of high-precision Monte Carlo (MC) simulations for ${\cal F}_c$ of the Ising model on a square lattice with isotropic ferromagnetic couplings between nearest neighbors and with an an…
For a material to order upon cooling is common sense. What is more seldom is for disorder to reappear at lower temperature, which is known as reentrant behavior. Such resurgence of disorder has been observed in a variety of systems, ranging from Rochelle salts to nematic phases in liquid crystals. Frustration is often a key ingredient for reentrance mechanisms. Here we shall study a frustrated model, namely the anisotropic shuriken lattice, which offers a natural setting to explore an extension of the notion of reentrance between magnetic disordered phases. By tuning the anisotropy of the latt…
