A driven Ising model with friction due to magnetic correlations has recently been proposed by Kadau et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 137205 (2008)). The non-equilibrium phase transition present in this system is investigated in detail using analytical methods as well as Monte Carlo simulations. In the limit of high driving velocities $v$ the model shows mean field behavior due to dimensional reduction and can be solved exactly for various geometries. The simulations are performed with three different single spin flip rates: the common Metropolis and Glauber rates as well as a multiplicative rate. Due to the non-equilibrium nature of the model all rates lead to different critical temperatures at $v>0$, while the exact solution matches the multiplicative rate. Finally, the cross-over from Ising to mean field behavior as function of velocity and system size is analysed in one and two dimensions.
We consider a stochastic model for the directed motion of a solid object due to the rectification of asymmetric surface vibrations with Poissonian shot-noise statistics. The friction between the object and the surface is given by a piecewise-linear friction force. This models the combined effect of dynamic friction and singular dry friction. We derive an exact solution of the stationary Kolmogorov-Feller (KF) equation in the case of two-sided exponentially distributed amplitudes. The stationary density of the velocity exhibits singular features such as a discontinuity and a delta-peak singular…
The non-equilibrium phase transition in driven two-dimensional Ising models with two different geometries is investigated using Monte Carlo methods as well as analytical calculations. The models show dissipation through fluctuation induced friction near the critical point. We first consider high driving velocities and demonstrate that both systems are in the same universality class and undergo a strongly anisotropic non-equilibrium phase transition, with anisotropy exponent θ=3. Within a field theoretical ansatz the simulation results are confirmed. The crossover from Ising to mean field behav…
The ground-state degeneracy and magnetocaloric effect in the spin-$1/2$ Ising-Heisenberg double-tetrahedral chain are exactly investigated. It is demonstrated that the zero-temperature phase diagram involves two classical and two quantum chiral phases with distinct degrees of the macroscopic degeneracy. Different macroscopic degeneracies observed in the latter phases and at individual ground-state phase transitions are confirmed by multiple-peak dependencies of the specific heat and entropy on the magnetic field. The cooling capability of the model is well illustrated by the magnetic-field var…
The spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain in a magnetic field is exactly solved by a rigorous treatment based on the transfer-matrix method. An exact ground-state phase diagram includes in total three unconventional quantum ground states with a quantum entanglement of the decorating spin-1 Heisenberg dimers apart from two ground states with a classical spin arrangement. It is evidenced that all three values of the magnetization allowed for the spin-1 diamond chain without translationally broken symmetry by the Oshikawa-Yamanaka-Affleck criterion can become evident in an outstanding stepwise ma…
We present a set of exactly solvable Ising models, with half-odd-integer spin-S on a square-type lattice including a quartic interaction term in the Hamiltonian. The particular properties of the mixed lattice, associated with mixed half-odd-integer spin-(S,1/2) and only nearest-neighbour interaction, allow us to map this system either onto a purely spin-1/2 lattice or onto a purely spin-S lattice. By imposing the condition that the mixed half-odd-integer spin-(S,1/2) lattice must have an exact solution, we found a set of exact solutions that satisfy the {\it free fermion} condition of the eigh…
The spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain with the second-neighbor interaction between the nodal spins is rigorously solved using the transfer-matrix method. Exact results for the ground state, magnetization process and specific heat are presented and discussed in particular. It is shown that the further-neighbor interaction between the nodal spins gives rise to three novel ground states with a translationally broken symmetry, but at the same time, it does not increases the total number of intermediate plateaus in a zero-temperature magnetization curve compared with the simplified model withou…
Ground-state and finite-temperature behaviour of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on decorated planar lattices consisting of inter-connected diamonds is investigated by means of the generalised decoration-iteration mapping transformation. The obtained exact results clearly point out that this model has a rather complex ground state composed of two unusual quantum phases, which is valid regardless of the lattice topology as well as the spatial dimensionality of the investigated system. It is shown that the diamond-like decorated planar lattices with a sufficiently high coord…
Using an Ising-like model of protein mechanical unfolding, we introduce a diffusive dynamics on its exactly known free energy profile, reducing the nonequilibrium dynamics of the model to a biased random walk. As an illustration, the model is then applied to the protein translocation phenomenon, taking inspiration from a recent experiment on the green fluorescent protein pulled by a molecular motor. The average translocation time is evaluated exactly, and the analysis of single trajectories shows that translocation proceeds through an intermediate state, similar to that observed in the experim…
A hybrid lattice-statistical model of doubly decorated two-dimensional lattices, which have localized Ising spins at its nodal sites and itinerant electrons delocalized over decorating sites, is exactly solved with the help of a generalized decoration-iteration transformation. Under the assumption of a quarter filling of each couple of the decorating sites, the ground state constitutes either spontaneously long-range ordered ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic phase in dependence on whether the ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interaction between the localized Ising spins and itinerant electrons …
The ground state, zero-temperature magnetization process, critical behaviour and isothermal entropy change of the mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated triangular lattice in a magnetic field are exactly studied after performing the generalized decoration-iteration mapping transformation. It is shown that both the inverse and conventional magnetocaloric effect can be found near the absolute zero temperature. The former phenomenon can be found in a vicinity of the discontinuous phase transitions and their crossing, while the latter one occurs in some paramagnetic phases due to a spin frustration…
We investigate a non solvable two-dimensional ferromagnetic Ising model with nearest neighbor plus weak finite range interactions of strength λ. We rigorously establish one of the predictions of Conformal Field Theory (CFT), namely the fact that at the critical temperature the finite size corrections to the free energy are universal, in the sense that they are exactly independent of the interaction. The corresponding central charge, defined in terms of the coefficient of the first subleading term to the free energy, as proposed by Affleck and Blote-Cardy-Nightingale, is constant and equal to 1…
We discuss three exactly solvable spin models of geometric frustration. First, we discuss a 1-parameter subfamily of the 16 vertex model, which can be mapped to a planar Ising model and solved via Fisher-Dubedát decorations. We then consider a 1-parameter family generalization of the Villain's fully frustrated model, which interpolates between Onsager's 2D Ising model and the Villain one. We then discuss spin ice models on a tree, which can be solved exactly using recursions \textit{a lá Bethe}.
An exactly solvable variant of mixed spin-(1/2,1) Ising-Heisenberg diamond chain is considered. Vertical spin-1 dimers are taken as quantum ones with Heisenberg bilinear and biquadratic interactions and with single-ion anisotropy, while all interactions between spin-1 and spin-1/2 residing on the intermediate sites are taken in the Ising form. The detailed analysis of the $T=0$ ground state phase diagram is presented. The phase diagrams have shown to be rather rich, demonstrating large variety of ground states: saturated one, three ferrimagnetic with magnetization equal to 3/5 and another four…
Competitive effects of so-called three-site four-spin interactions, single ion anisotropy and bilinear interactions is studied in the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on a decorated square lattice. Exploring the decoration-iteration transformation, we have obtained exact closed-form expressions for the partition function and other thermodynamic quantities of the model. From these relations, we have numerically determined ground- state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the system. We have also investigated temperature variations of the correlation functions, internal energy, entropy…
A non-hermitian deformation of the one-dimensional transverse Ising model is shown to have the property of quasi-hermiticity. The transverse Ising chain is obtained from the starting non-hermitian Hamiltonian through a similarity transformation. Consequently, both the models have identical eigen-spectra, although the eigen-functions are different. The metric in the Hilbert space, which makes the non-hermitian model unitary and ensures the completeness of states, has been constructed explicitly. Although the longitudinal correlation functions are identical for both the non-hermitian and the her…
An exactly solvable spin-electron tetrahedral chain, where the Ising spins localized at nodal lattice sites regularly alternate with three equivalent lattice sites available for one mobile electron is considered. The system with ferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and electrons exhibits an enhanced magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in the limit $H/|J|\to 0$ when the entropy is very small, whereas the system with antiferromagnetic interaction between the Ising spins and electrons exhibits an enhanced MCE around the field $H/J=1$ when the entropy is sufficiently close to the value $S/2N …
The rigorous approach aimed at providing exact analytical results for hybrid classical-quantum models is elaborated on the grounds of generalized algebraic mapping transformations. This conceptually simple method allows one to obtain novel interesting exact results for the hybrid classical-quantum models, which may for instance describe interacting many-particle systems composed of the classical Ising spins and quantum Heisenberg spins, the localized Ising spins and delocalized electrons, or many other hybrid systems of a mixed classical-quantum nature.
We construct a hierarchy of exactly solvable spin-1/2 chains with so(N)_1 critical points. Our construction is based on the framework of condensate-induced transitions between topological phases. We employ this framework to construct a Hamiltonian term that couples N transverse field Ising chains such that the resulting theory is critical and described by the so(N)_1 conformal field theory. By employing spin duality transformations, we then cast these spin chains for arbitrary N into translationally invariant forms that all allow exact solution by the means of a Jordan-Wigner transformation. F…
Over the last few years it was pointed out that certain observables of time-evolving quantum systems may have singularities at certain moments in time, mimicking the singularities physical systems have when undergoing phase transitions. These were given the name of dynamical phase transitions. They were shown to exist in certain integrable (exactly solvable) quantum systems, and were seen experimentally in some setups related (but not identical) to these solvable models. The "universality classes" of such singularities were not yet convincingly established, however. We argue that random field …
Phase boundaries in p-T and p-V diagrams are essential in material science researches. Exact analytic knowledge about such phase boundaries are known so far only in two-dimensional (2D) Ising-like models, and only for cases with two phases. In the present paper we present several lattice gas models, some with three phases. The phase boundaries are either analytically calculated or exactly evaluated.
We investigate the interface dynamics of the two-dimensional stochastic Ising model in an external field under helicoidal boundary conditions. At sufficiently low temperatures and fields, the dynamics of the interface is described by an exactly solvable high-spin asymmetric quantum Hamiltonian that is the infinitesimal generator of the zero range process. Generally, the critical dynamics of the interface fluctuations is in the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality class of critical behavior. We remark that a whole family of RSOS interface models similar to the Ising interface model investigated her…
We present a fully analytically solvable family of models with many-body cluster interaction and Ising interaction. This family exhibits two phases, dubbed cluster and Ising phases, respectively. The critical point turns out to be independent of the cluster size $n+2$ and is reached exactly when both interactions are equally weighted. For even $n$ we prove that the cluster phase corresponds to a nematic ordered phase and in the case of odd $n$ to a symmetry protected topological ordered phase. Though complex, we are able to quantify the multi-particle entanglement content of neighboring spins.…
We present the first rigorous derivation of a number of universal relations for a class of models with continuously varying indices (among which are interacting planar Ising models, quantum spin chains and 1D Fermi systems), for which an exact solution is not known, except in a few special cases. Most of these formulas were conjectured by Luther and Peschel, Kadanoff, Haldane, but only checked in the special solvable models; one of them, related to the anisotropic Ashkin-Teller model, is novel.
In this paper, we write exactly solvable generalizations of 1-dimensional quantum XY and Ising-like models by using $2^d$-dimensional Gamma ($Γ$) matrices as the degrees of freedom on each site. We show that these models result in quadratic Fermionic Hamiltonians with Jordan-Wigner like transformations. We illustrate the techniques using a specific case of 4-dimensional $Γ$ matrices and explore the quantum phase transitions present in the model.
We study a three-dimensional (3D) classical Ising model that is exactly solvable when some coupling constants take certain imaginary values. The solution combines and generalizes the Onsager-Kaufman solution of the 2D Ising model and the solution of Kitaev's honeycomb model, leading to a three-parameter phase diagram with a third order phase transition between two distinct phases. Interestingly, the phases of this model are distinguished by topological features: the expectation value of a certain family of loop observables depend only on the topology of the loop (whether the loop is contractib…
The Ising square lattice model with nearest-neighbor (nn) interactions ($J_1$) is one of the few exactly solvable models [1]. Adding next-neareast- neighbor (nnn) interactions ($J_2$) or a magnetic field (or both) leads to the non solvability of the model and only some approximate solutions are possible. In this brief report we will review some results obtained within effective field theory. We will show that besides second-order transitions there are also lines of first-order transitions and the coordinates of tricritical points are calculated.
We demonstrate that in a ferromagnetic substrate, which is continuously driven out of equilibrium by a field moving with constant velocity $v$, at least two types of friction may occur when $v$ goes to zero: The substrate may feel a friction force proportional to $v$ (Stokes friction), if the field changes on a time scale which is longer than the intrinsic relaxation time. On the other hand, the friction force may become independent of $v$ in the opposite case (Coulomb friction). These observations are analogous to e.g. solid friction. The effect is demonstrated in both, the Ising (one spin di…
A general understanding of optimal control in non-equilibrium systems would illuminate the operational principles of biological and artificial nanoscale machines. Recent work has shown that a system driven out of equilibrium by a linear response protocol is endowed with a Riemannian metric related to generalized susceptibilities, and that geodesics on this manifold are the non-equilibrium control protocols with the lowest achievable dissipation. While this elegant mathematical framework has inspired numerous studies of exactly solvable systems, no description of the thermodynamic geometry yet …
We study the non-equilibrium steady states that emerge when two interacting three-dimensional Potts blocks slide on each other. As at equilibrium the Potts model exhibits different types of phase transitions for different numbers $q$ of spin states, we consider the following three cases: $q=2$ (i.e. the Ising case), $q=3$, and $q=9$, which at equilibrium yield respectively a second order phase transition, a weak first order transition and a strong first order transition. In our study we focus on the anisotropic character of the steady states that result from the relative motion and discuss the…
The $d=2$ critical Ising model is described by an exactly solvable Conformal Field Theory (CFT). The deformation to $d=2+ε$ is a relatively simple system at strong coupling outside of even dimensions. Using novel numerical and analytical conformal bootstrap methods in Lorentzian signature, we show that the leading corrections to the Ising data are more singular than $ε$. There must be infinitely many new states due to the $d$-dependence of conformal symmetry. The linear independence of conformal blocks is central to this bootstrap approach, which can be extended to more rigorous studies of non…
An exactly solvable model of the sawtooth chain with Ising and Heisenberg bonds and with coupling to lattice distortion for Heisenberg bonds is considered in the magnetic field. Using the direct transfer-matrix formalism an exact description of the thermodynamic functions is obtained. The ground state phase diagrams for all regions of parameters values containing phases corresponding to the magnetization plateaus at $M=0,1/4$ and 1/2 have been obtained. Exact formulas for bond distortions for various ground states are presented. A novel mechanism of magnetization plateau stabilization correspo…
We construct and analyze a family of $M$-component vectorial spin systems which exhibit glass transitions and jamming within supercooled paramagnetic states without quenched disorder. Our system is defined on lattices with connectivity $c=αM$ and becomes exactly solvable in the limit of large number of components $M \to \infty$. We consider generic $p$-body interactions between the vectorial Ising/continuous spins with linear/non-linear potentials. The existence of self-generated randomness is demonstrated by showing that the random energy model is recovered from a $M$-component ferromagnetic …
We propose to describe correlations in classical and quantum systems in terms of full counting statistics of a suitably chosen discrete observable. The method is illustrated with two exactly solvable examples: the classical one-dimensional Ising model and the quantum spin-1/2 XY chain. For the one-dimensional Ising model, our method results in a phase diagram with two phases distinguishable by the long-distance behavior of the Jordan-Wigner strings. For the quantum XY chain, the method reproduces the previously known phase diagram.
We consider an exactly solvable version of the quantum spin-1/2 orthogonal-dimer chain with the Heisenberg intra-dimer and Ising inter-dimer couplings. The investigated quantum spin system exhibits at zero temperature fractional plateaux at 1/4 and 1/2 of the saturation magnetization and it has a highly degenerate ground state at critical fields where the magnetization jumps. We study the field dependence of the specific heat at low temperature. The lattice-gas description is formulated in a vicinity of critical fields to explain the low-temperature behaviour of specific heat.
We propose a simple, exactly solvable, model of interface growth in a random medium that is a variant of the zero-temperature random-field Ising model on the Cayley tree. This model is shown to have a phase diagram (critical depinning field versus disorder strength) qualitatively similar to that obtained numerically on the cubic lattice. We then introduce a specifically tailored random graph that allows an exact asymptotic analysis of the height and width of the interface. We characterize the change of morphology of the interface as a function of the disorder strength, a change that is found t…
The generalized Gibbs ensemble introduced for describing few body correlations in exactly solvable systems following a quantum quench is related to the nonergodic way in which operators sample, in the limit of infinite time after the quench, the quantum correlations present in the initial state. The nonergodicity of the correlations is thus shown \emph{analytically} to imply the equivalence with the generalized Gibbs ensemble for quantum Ising and XX spin chains as well as for the Luttinger model the thermodynamic limit, and for a broad class of initial states and correlation functions of both…
We study the spin-1/2 Ising-XXZ model on a decorated honeycomb lattice composed of five spins per unit cell, one Ising spin, and four Heisenberg spins. This model involving the Heisenberg exchange interaction is one of the few models that can be exactly solvable through the generalized star-triangle transformation. The significance of this model is its close relationship to the fully decorated quantum Heisenberg honeycomb lattice since 4/5 of the particles are Heisenberg spins. We investigate the phase diagram at zero temperature and identify a relevant quantum spin frustrated phase resulting …
We present a class of exactly solvable tri-junctions of one- and two-dimensional spin systems. Based on the geometric criterion for solvability, we clarify the sufficient condition for the junctions so that the spin Hamiltonian becomes equivalent to Majorana quadratic forms. Then we examine spin tri-junctions using the obtained solvable models. We consider the transverse magnetic field Ising spin chains and reveal how Majorana zero modes appear at the tri-junctions of the chains. Local terms of the tri-junction crucially affect the appearance of Majorna zero modes, and the tri-junction may sup…
Exactly solvable model of A + A \to 0 reactions on a heterogeneous catalytic chain
We propose the mapping of polynomial of degree 2S constructed as a linear combination of powers of spin-$S$ (for simplicity, we called as spin-$S$ polynomial) onto spin-crossover state. The spin-$S$ polynomial in general can be projected onto non-symmetric degenerated spin up (high-spin) and spin down (low-spin) momenta. The total number of mapping for each general spin-$S$ is given by $2(2^{2S}-1)$. As an application of this mapping, we consider a general non-bilinear spin-$S$ Ising model which can be transformed onto spin-crossover described by Wajnflasz model. Using a further transformation…
Three solvable models are set out in some detail in reviewing different types of phase transitions. Two of these relate directly to emergent critical phenomena, viz. melting and magnetic transitions in heavy rare-earth metals, and secondly, via the $3d$ Ising model, to critical behaviour in an insulating ferromagnet such as CrBr$_3$. The final `transition', however, concerns ionization of an electron in an isoelectronic series with $N$ electrons as the atomic number $Z$ is reduced below that of the neutral atom. These solvable models are, throughout, brought into contact either with experiment…
Advance in quantum simulations using trapped ions or superconducting elements allows detailed analysis of the transverse field Ising model (TFIM), which can exhibit a quantum phase transition and has been a paradigm in exactly solvable quantum systems. The Jordan-Wigner transformation maps the one-dimensional TFIM to a fermion model, but additional complications arise in finite systems and introduce a fermion-number parity constraint when periodic boundary condition (PBC) is imposed. By constructing the free energy and spin correlations with the fermion-number parity constraint and comparing t…
