Ground-state and finite-temperature behaviour of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on decorated planar lattices consisting of inter-connected diamonds is investigated by means of the generalised decoration-iteration mapping transformation. The obtained exact results clearly point out that this model has a rather complex ground state composed of two unusual quantum phases, which is valid regardless of the lattice topology as well as the spatial dimensionality of the investigated system. It is shown that the diamond-like decorated planar lattices with a sufficiently high coordination number may exhibit a striking critical behaviour including reentrant phase transitions with two or three consecutive critical points.
Mixed-spin Ising model on a decorated Bethe lattice is rigorously solved by combining the decoration-iteration transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. Exact results for critical lines, compensation temperatures, total and sublattice magnetizations are obtained from a precise mapping relationship with the corresponding spin-1/2 Ising model on a simple (undecorated) Bethe lattice. The effect of next-nearest-neighbour interaction and single-ion anisotropy on magnetic properties of the ferrimagnetic model is investigated in particular. It is shown that the total magnetization …
Phase diagrams and spontaneous magnetization are rigorously calculated for a coupled spin-electron model on a doubly decorated honeycomb lattice, which accounts for a quantum-mechanical hopping of the mobile electrons on decorating sites, the nearest-neighbor Ising coupling between mobile electrons and localized spins, as well as, the further-neighbor Ising coupling between the localized spins placed on nodal sites. The spontaneously ordered ferromagnetic phase, spontaneously ordered antiferromagnetic phase and disordered paramagnetic phase emerge in a phase diagram depending on an electron fi…
The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg ferromagnet on the decorated triangular lattice consisting of inter-connected diamonds is investigated within the framework of an exact decoration-iteration mapping transformation. It is shown that the diamond-like decoration by a couple of the Heisenberg spins gives rise to a diverse critical behaviour including reentrant phase transitions with two consecutive critical points.
Phase transitions of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising-Heisenberg model on several decorated planar lattices consisting of interconnected diamonds are investigated within the framework of the generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The main attention is paid to the systematic study of the finite-temperature phase diagrams in dependence on the lattice topology. The critical behaviour of the hybrid quantum-classical Ising-Heisenberg model is compared with the relevant behaviour of its semi-classical Ising analogue. It is shown that both models on diamond-like decorated planar lattices…
The combination of an exact and Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group (CTMRG) methods is used to study an influence of external electric and magnetic fields on existence of intriguing reentrant magnetic transitions in a coupled spin-electron model on a decorated square lattice. The two-dimensional (2D) decorated square lattice with localized nodal spins and delocalized electrons is taken into account. It was found that the competition among all involved interactions (the electron hopping, spin-spin and spin-electron interaction, external electric and magnetic fields) in combination with…
We study spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like-decorated square lattice perturbed by two kinds of further neighbor couplings. In our previous study [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 85, 094002 (2016)], the second-order effective Hamiltonian for the Heisenberg model perturbed by a further neighbor coupling was found to be a square-lattice quantum-dimer model with a finite hopping amplitude, t>0, and no dimer-dimer interaction, v=0. In this study, we introduce another kind of further neighbor coupling and show that it leads to an attractive interaction between dimers, which suggests the stabi…
We study spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like-decorated square lattice. The diamond-like-decorated square lattice is a lattice in which the bonds in a square lattice are replaced with diamond units. The diamond unit has two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the ratio $λ$ of the diagonal bond strength to that of the other four edges controls the frustration strength. For $0.974<λ<2$, the present system has a nontrivial macroscopic degeneracy, which is called the macroscopically degenerated tetramer-dimer (MDTD) states. The MDTD states are identical to the H…
We study Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice perturbed by further neighbor couplings. The second-order effective Hamiltonian is calculated and the resultant Hamiltonian is found to be a square-lattice quantum-dimer model with a finite hopping amplitude and no repulsion, which suggests the stabilization of the plaquette phase. Our recipe for constructing quantum-dimer models can be adopted for other lattices and provides a route for the experimental realization of quantum-dimer models.
The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated Bethe lattices is exactly solved with the help of decoration-iteration transformation and exact recursion relations. It is shown that the model under investigation exhibits reentrant phase transitions whenever a sufficiently high coordination number of the underlying Bethe lattice is considered.
We study the ground-state phase diagram of a Heisenberg model with spin $S=\frac{1}{2}$ on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. A diamond unit has two types of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, and the ratio $λ$ between the length of the diagonal bond and that of the other four edges determines the strength of frustration. It has been pointed out [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn {\bf85}, 033705 (2016)] that the so-called tetramer-dimer states, which are expected to be stabilized in an intermediate region of $λ_{\rm c}<λ<2$, are identical to the square-lattice dimer covering states, which ignited …

Thermal first-order phase transitions, Ising critical points, and reentrance in the Ising-Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated square lattice in a magnetic field
We discuss the origin of an enigmatic low-temperature behavior of one-dimensional decorated spin systems which was coined the pseudo-transition. Tracing out the decorated parts results in the standard Ising-chain model with temperature-dependent parameters and the unexpected low-temperature behavior of thermodynamic quantities and correlations of the decorated spin chains can be tracked down to the critical point of the standard Ising-chain model at ${\sf H}=0$ and ${\sf T}=0$. We illustrate this perspective using as examples the spin-1/2 Ising-XYZ diamond chain, the coupled spin-electron doub…

The spin-1/2 Ising-Heisenberg model on diamond-like decorated Bethe lattices is exactly solved in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field by combining the decoration-iteration mapping transformation with the method of exact recursion relations. In particular, the ground state and low-temperature magnetization process of the ferrimagnetic version of the considered model is investigated in detail. Three different magnetization scenarios with up to two consecutive fractional magnetization plateaus were found, whereas the intermediate magnetization plateau may either correspond to the clas…
The mixed spin-(1/2, 3/2) Ising model on a decorated square lattice, which takes into account lattice vibrations of the spin-3/2 decorating magnetic ions at a quantum-mechanical level under the assumption of a perfect lattice rigidity of the spin-1/2 nodal magnetic ions, is examined via an exact mapping correspondence with the effective spin-1/2 Ising model on a square lattice. Although the considered magnetic structure is in principle unfrustrated due to bipartite nature of a decorated square lattice, the model under investigation may display anomalous spin frustration driven by a magnetoelas…
Recently various 2D AKLT models have been shown to be gapped, including the one on the hexagonal lattice. Here we report on a non-trivial 3D AKLT model which consists of spin-2 entities on the diamond lattice sites and one single spin-1 entity between every neighboring spin-2 site. Although the nonzero gap problem for the uniformly spin-2 AKLT models on the diamond and square lattices is still open, we are able to establish the existence of the gap for two planar lattices, which we call the inscribed square lattice and the triangle-octagon lattice, respectively. So far, these latter two models…
The mixed spin-1/2 and spin-S Ising model on a decorated planar lattice accounting for lattice vibrations of decorating atoms is treated by making use of the canonical coordinate transformation, the decoration-iteration transformation, and the harmonic approximation. It is shown that the magnetoelastic coupling gives rise to an effective single-ion anisotropy and three-site four-spin interaction, which are responsible for the anomalous spin frustration of the decorating spins in virtue of a competition with the equilibrium nearest-neighbor exchange interaction between the nodal and decorating …
Thermodynamic properties of the macroscopically degenerate tetramer-dimer phase of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the diamond-decorated square lattice
Magnetoelectric properties of a coupled spin-electron model on a doubly decorated square lattice in an external electric field applied along the crystallographic axis [11] are rigorously examined with the help of generalized decoration-iteration transformation. The phase diagram, spontaneous magnetization and electric polarization are exactly calculated and their dependencies are comprehensively investigated under a concurrent influence of temperature and electric field. It is found that the electric field mostly stabilizes at zero temperature the spontaneous antiferromagnetic order with respe…
The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg systems are studied on three typical diamond-type hierarchical lattices (systems A, B and C) with fractal dimensions 1.63, 2 and 2.58, respectively, and the phase diagrams, critical phenomena and quantum correlations are calculated by a combination of the equivalent transformation and real-space renormalization group methods. We find that there exist a reentrant behavior for system A and a finite temperature transition in the isotropic Heisenberg limit for system C (not for system B). Unlike the ferromagnetic case, the Neel temperatures of antiferromag…
We obtain a quantum dimer model (QDM) containing a Rokhsar-Kivelson (RK) point expressed by spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a diamond-like decorated square lattice. This lattice has macroscopically degenerated nonmagnetic ground states, which are equivalent to the Hilbert space of a square-lattice QDM. Then, a square-lattice QDM containing the RK point as a second-order effective Hamiltonian is obtained by introducing further neighbor couplings as perturbation. Our model can provide a new method for the experimental realization of a resonating valence bond state in the QDM.
The article provides a tutorial review on how to treat Ising models within mean-field (MF), effective-field (EF) and exact methods. MF solutions of the spin-1 Blume-Capel (BC) model and the mixed-spin Ising model demonstrate a change of continuous phase transitions to discontinuous ones at a tricritical point. A quantum phase transition of the spin-S Ising model driven by a transverse field is explored within MF method. EF theory is elaborated within a single- and two-spin cluster approach to demonstrate an efficiency of this approximate method. The long-standing problem of this method concern…
