For a positive integer $n$, let $\mathcal T(n)$ be the set of all integers greater than or equal to $n$. An integral quadratic form $f$ is called tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universal if the set of nonzero integers that are represented by $f$ is exactly $\mathcal T(n)$. The smallest possible rank over all tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universal quadratic forms is defined by $t(n)$. In this article, we find all tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universal diagonal quadratic forms. We also prove that $t(n) \in Ω(\log_2(n)) \cap O(\sqrt{n})$. Explicit lower and upper bounds for $t(n)$ will be provided for some small integer $n$.
A (positive definite and integral) quadratic form is said to be $\textit{prime-universal}$ if it represents all primes. Recently, Doyle and Williams in [2] classified all prime-universal diagonal ternary quadratic forms, and all prime-universal diagonal quaternary quadratic forms under two conjectures proposed by themselves. In this article, we classify all prime-universal diagonal quadratic forms regardless of ranks. Furthermore, we prove, so called, $67$-Theorem for a diagonal quadratic form to be prime-universal.
An integral quadratic polynomial (with positive definite quadratic part) is called almost universal if it represents all but finitely many positive integers. In this paper, we provide a characterization of almost universal ternary quadratic polynomials with conductor 2.
An integral quadratic polynomial (with positive definite quadratic part) is called almost universal if it represents all but finitely many positive integers. In this paper, we introduce the conductor of a quadratic polynomial, and give an effective characterization of almost universal ternary quadratic polynomials with odd prime power conductor.
For any positive integer M we show that there are infinitely many real quadratic fields that do not admit M-ary universal quadratic forms (without any restriction on the parity of their cross coefficients).
A (positive definite integral) quadratic form is called almost 2-universal if it represents all (positive definite integral) binary quadratic forms except those in only finitely many equivalence classes. Oh [7] determined all almost 2-universal quinary diagonal quadratic forms remaining three as candidates. In this article, we prove that those three candidates are indeed almost 2-universal.
Quadratic forms over Z that represent all positive integers are called universal. Starting with Ramanujan, 54 universal quaternary quadratic forms without cross product terms were discovered. The form that is the sum of four squares was proved universal by Hurwitz using a special ring of quaternions. Here seven other quaternary quadratic forms are shown universal by investigation of appropriate rings of quaternions.
For a set $S$ of (positive definite and integral) quadratic forms with bounded rank, a quadratic form $f$ is called $S$-universal if it represents all quadratic forms in $S$. A subset $S_0$ of $S$ is called an $S$-universality criterion set if any $S_0$-universal quadratic form is $S$-universal. We say $S_0$ is minimal if there does not exist a proper subset of $S_0$ that is an $S$-universality criterion set. In this article, we study various properties of minimal universality criterion sets. In particular, we show that for `most' binary quadratic forms $f$, minimal $S$-universality criterion …
A positive definite Hermitian lattice is said to be 2-universal if it represents all positive definite binary Hermitian lattices. We find all 2-universal ternary and quaternary Hermitian lattices over imaginary quadratic number fields.
A (positive definite and integral) quadratic form $f$ is said to be $\textit{universal}$ if it represents all positive integers, and is said to be $\textit{primitively universal}$ if it represents all positive integers primitively. We also say $f$ is $\textit{primitively almost universal}$ if it represents almost all positive integers primitively. Conway and Schneeberger proved (see [1]) that there are exactly $204$ equivalence classes of universal quaternary quadratic forms. Recently, Earnest and Gunawardana proved in [4] that among $204$ equivalence classes of universal quaternary quadratic …
For a positive integer $n$, the set of all integers greater than or equal to $n$ is denoted by $\mathcal T(n)$. A sum of generalized $m$-gonal numbers $g$ is called tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universal if the set of all nonzero integers represented by $g$ is equal to $\mathcal T(n)$. In this article, we prove the existence of a minimal tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universality criterion set for a sum of generalized $m$-gonal numbers for any pair $(m,n)$. To achieve this, we introduce an algorithm giving all candidates for tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universal sums of generalized $m$-gonal numbers for any given …
A positive definite integral quadratic form is said to be almost (primitively) universal if it (primitively) represents all but at most finitely many positive integers. In general, almost primitive universality is a stronger property than almost universality. The two main results of this paper are: 1) every primitively universal form nontrivially represents zero over every ring of p-adic integers, and 2) every almost universal form in five or more variables is almost primitively universal.
In this paper, we will prove that if $d$ is sufficiently large square-free positive rational integer, then there is no integral septenary universal quadratic lattice over $\mathcal{O}_F$ where $F=\mathbb Q(\sqrt{d})$.
For all positive integers $k$ and $N$ we prove that there are infinitely many totally real multiquadratic fields $K$ of degree $2^k$ over $\mathbb Q$ such that each universal quadratic form over $K$ has at least $N$ variables.
Let $k$ be a positive integer and let $F$ be a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_2$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_F$. An integral (resp. classic) quadratic form over $\mathcal{O}_F$ is called $k$-universal (resp. classically $k$-universal) if it represents all integral (resp. classic) quadratic forms of dimension $k$. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of $k$-universal and classically $k$-universal quadratic forms over $\mathcal{O}_F$. The results are stated in terms of the fundamental invariants associated to Jordan splittings of quadratic lattices.
We study the minimal number of variables required by a totally positive definite diagonal universal quadratic form over a real quadratic field $\mathbb Q(\sqrt D)$ and obtain lower and upper bounds for it in terms of certain sums of coefficients of the associated continued fraction. We also estimate such sums in terms of $D$ and establish a link between continued fraction expansions and special values of $L$-functions in the spirit of Kronecker's limit formula.
Let $P_8(x)=3x^2-2x$. For positive integers $a_1,a_2,\dots,a_k$, a polynomial of the form $a_1P_8(x_1)+a_2P_8(x_2)+\cdots+a_kP_8(x_k)$ is called an octagonal form. For a positive integer $n$, an octagonal form is called tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universal if it represents (over $\mathbb{z}$) every positive integer greater than or equal to $n$ and does not represent any positive integer less than $n$. In this article, we find all tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universal octagonal forms for every $n\ge 2$. Furthermore, we provide an effective criterion on tight $\mathcal T(n)$-universality of an arbirary oct…
The aim of this article is to study (additively) indecomposable algebraic integers $\mathcal O_K$ of biquadratic number fields $K$ and universal totally positive quadratic forms with coefficients in $\mathcal O_K$. There are given sufficient conditions for an indecomposable element of a quadratic subfield to remain indecomposable in the biquadratic number field $K$. Furthermore, estimates are proven which enable algorithmization of the method of escalation over $K$. These are used to prove, over two particular biquadratic number fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{3})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{6},…
We study totally real number fields that admit a universal quadratic form whose coefficients are rational integers. We show that $\mathbb Q(\sqrt 5)$ is the only such real quadratic field, and that among fields of degrees 3, 4, 5, and 7 which have principal codifferent ideal, the only one is $\mathbb Q(ζ_7+ζ_7^{-1})$, over which the form $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2+xy+xz+xw$ is universal. Moreover, we prove an upper bound for Pythagoras numbers of orders in number fields that depends only on the degree of the number field.
We show that if $K$ is a monogenic, primitive, totally real number field, that contains units of every signature, then there exists a lower bound for the rank of integer universal quadratic forms defined over $K$. In particular, we extend the work of Blomer and Kala, to show that there exist infinitely many totally real cubic number fields that do not have a universal quadratic form of a given rank defined over them. For the real quadratic number fields with a unit of negative norm, we show that the minimal rank of a universal quadratic form goes to infinity as the discriminant of the number f…
In this article we show that the form $x^2 + iy^2 + z^2 + iw^2$ represents all gaussian integers. The main tools used in this proof are Fermat's little theorem (over finite field extensions), the Mordell-Niven theorem (representation of some gaussians), and the generalized Euler-identity over finite field extensions.
A quadratic form over a non-archimedian local field of characteristic zero $F$ is called universal if it is integral and it represents all non-zero integers of $F$. Xu Fei and Zhang Yang determined all universal quadratic forms in the case when $F$ is non-dyadic. In the more complicated dyadic case, when $F$ is a finite extension of $\mathbb Q_2$, they solved the same problem only in the ternary case. In our paper we solve this problem in the general case. Our result is given in terms of BONGs (bases of norm generators) but in section 3 of the paper we translate (without a proof) our result in…
We study quadratic forms over totally real number fields by using an associated ring of quaternions. We examine some properties of residue class rings of these quaternions and use geometry of numbers to prove that certain ideals of the ring of quaternions contain elements of a small norm. We prove that $x^2+y^2+z^2+w^2+xy+xz+xw$ is universal over $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_7+ζ_7^{-1})$ and that $x^2+xy+y^2+z^2+zw+w^2$ represents all totally positive multiples of certain special elements.
A number field $k$ admits a binary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is bigger than one. In this case, there are only finitely many classes of such binary integral quadratic forms over $k$. A number field $k$ admits a ternary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is even. In this case, there are infinitely many classes of such ternary integral quadratic forms over $k$. An integral quadratic form over a number field $k$ with more tha…
Let $a,b,c,d,e,f\in\mathbb N$ with $a\ge c\ge e>0$, $b\le a$ and $b\equiv a\pmod2$, $d\le c$ and $d\equiv c\pmod2$, $f\le e$ and $f\equiv e\pmod2$. If any nonnegative integer can be written as $x(ax+b)/2+y(cy+d)/2+z(ez+f)/2$ with $x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$, then the ordered tuple $(a,b,c,d,e,f)$ is said to be universal over $\mathbb Z$. Recently, Z.-W. Sun found all candidates for such universal tuples over $\mathbb Z$. In this paper, we use the theory of ternary quadratic forms to show that 44 concrete tuples $(a,b,c,d,e,f)$ in Sun's list of candidates are indeed universal over $\mathbb Z$. For exam…
For a subset $S$ of nonnegative integers and a vector $\mathbf{a}=(a_1,\dots,a_k)$ of positive integers, let $V'_S(\mathbf{a})=\{ a_1s_1+\cdots+a_ks_k : s_i\in S\} \setminus \{0\}$. For a positive integer $n$, let $\mathcal T(n)$ be the set of integers greater than or equal to $n$. In this paper, we consider the problem of finding all vectors $\mathbf{a}$ satisfying $V'_S(\mathbf{a})=\mathcal T(n)$, when $S$ is the set of (generalized) $m$-gonal numbers and $n$ is a positive integer. In particular, we completely resolve the case when $S$ is the set of triangular numbers.
A positive quadratic form is $(k,\ell)$-universal if it represents all the numbers $kx+\ell$ where $x$ is a non-negative integer, and almost $(k,\ell)$-universal if it represents all but finitely many of them. We prove that for any $k,\ell$ such that $k\nmid\ell$ there exists an almost $(k,\ell)$-universal diagonal ternary form. We also conjecture that there are only finitely many primes $p$ for which a $(p,\ell)$-universal diagonal ternary form exists (for any $\ell<p$) and we show the results of computer experiments that speak in favor of the conjecture.
We study totally positive definite quadratic forms over the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of a totally real biquadratic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{m}, \sqrt{s})$. We restrict our attention to classical forms (i.e., those with all non-diagonal coefficients in $2\mathcal{O}_K$) and prove that no such forms in three variables are universal (i.e., represent all totally positive elements of $\mathcal{O}_K$). This provides further evidence towards Kitaoka's conjecture that there are only finitely many number fields over which such forms exist. One of our main tools are additively indecomposable el…
Inspired by a paper of Salberger we give a new proof of Manin's conjecture for toric varieties over imaginary quadratic number fields by means of universal torsor parameterizations and elementary lattice point counting.
This paper supplies additions to our paper in Linear Algebra Appl. 510 (2016) 395--420 on integral spans of tight frames in Euclidean spaces. In that previous paper, we considered the case of an equiangular tight frame (ETF), proving that if its integral span is a lattice then the frame must be rational, but overlooking a simple argument in the reverse direction. Thus our first result here is that the integral span of an ETF is a lattice if and only if the frame is rational. Further, we discuss conditions under which such lattices are eutactic and perfect and, consequently, are local maxima of…
A conjecture of Manin predicts the distribution of rational points on Fano varieties. We provide a framework for proofs of Manin's conjecture for del Pezzo surfaces over imaginary quadratic fields, using universal torsors. Some of our tools are formulated over arbitrary number fields. As an application, we prove Manin's conjecture over imaginary quadratic fields K for the quartic del Pezzo surface S of singularity type A_3 with five lines given in P^4 by the equations vw - xy = vy + wy + xz = 0.
We obtain uniform lower bounds, true for all automorphic L-functions L(s) associated to cuspidal representations of GL(m,A) where A denotes the adeles of the rationals Q, of the integral on the vertical line (Re(s)=1/2) of the absolute value squared of L(s)/s; and also of L(s)/(s-s_0) when s_0 is a zero of the L-function on the critical line. Several variants are also obtained in small degrees m, for the vertical integrals at different abscissas in the critical strip. For the estimates required to prove convergence, we are led to generalise a result of Friedlander-Iwaniec (Can. J. Math. 57,200…
