A positive definite integral quadratic form is said to be almost (primitively) universal if it (primitively) represents all but at most finitely many positive integers. In general, almost primitive universality is a stronger property than almost universality. The two main results of this paper are: 1) every primitively universal form nontrivially represents zero over every ring of p-adic integers, and 2) every almost universal form in five or more variables is almost primitively universal.
A (positive definite and integral) quadratic form $f$ is said to be $\textit{universal}$ if it represents all positive integers, and is said to be $\textit{primitively universal}$ if it represents all positive integers primitively. We also say $f$ is $\textit{primitively almost universal}$ if it represents almost all positive integers primitively. Conway and Schneeberger proved (see [1]) that there are exactly $204$ equivalence classes of universal quaternary quadratic forms. Recently, Earnest and Gunawardana proved in [4] that among $204$ equivalence classes of universal quaternary quadratic …
An integral quadratic form is called strictly $n$-regular if it primitively represents all quadratic forms in $n$ variables that are primitively represented by its genus. For any $n \geq 2$, it will be shown that there are only finitely many similarity classes of positive definite strictly $n$-regular integral quadratic forms in $n + 4$ variables. This extends the recent finiteness results for strictly regular quaternary quadratic forms by Earnest-Kim-Meyer (2014).
A positive-definite integral quadratic form is called regular if it represents every positive integer which is locally represented. In this article, we classify all regular diagonal quadratic forms of rank greater than 3.
This paper presents fundamental algorithms for the computational theory of quadratic forms over number fields. In the first part of the paper, we present algorithms for checking if a given non-degenerate quadratic form over a fixed number field is either isotropic (respectively locally isotropic) or hyperbolic (respectively locally hyperbolic). Next we give a method of computing the dimension of an anisotropic part of a quadratic forms. The second part of the paper is devoted to algorithms computing two field invariants: the level and the Pythagoras number. Ultimately we present an algorithm v…
A number field $k$ admits a binary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is bigger than one. In this case, there are only finitely many classes of such binary integral quadratic forms over $k$. A number field $k$ admits a ternary integral quadratic form which represents all integers locally but not globally if and only if the class number of $k$ is even. In this case, there are infinitely many classes of such ternary integral quadratic forms over $k$. An integral quadratic form over a number field $k$ with more tha…
The goal of this note is to provide an analysis of the positive integers that are represented everywhere locally, but not globally, by each of the 29 spinor regular positive definite integral ternary quadratic forms that are not regular.
A (positive definite primitive integral) quadratic form is called odd-regular if it represents every odd positive integer which is locally represented. In this paper, we show that there are at most 147 diagonal odd-regular ternary quadratic forms and prove the odd-regularities of all but 6 candidates.
We investigate a new family of locally harmonic Maass forms which correspond to periods of modular forms. They transform like negative weight modular forms and are harmonic apart from jump singularities along infinite geodesics. Our main result is an explicit splitting of the new locally harmonic Maass forms into a harmonic part and a locally polynomial part that captures the jump singularities. As an application, we obtain finite rational formulas for suitable linear combinations of periods of meromorphic modular forms associated to positive definite binary quadratic forms.
In this paper, we determine the isomorphic classes of Morita equivalent subalgebras of irrational rotation algebras. It is based on the solution of the quadratic Diophantine equations. We determine the irrational rotation algebras that have locally trivial inclusions. We compute the index of the locally trivial inclusions of irrational rotation algebras.
A (positive definite and integral) quadratic form $f$ is called regular if it represents all integers that are locally represented. It is known that there are only finitely many regular ternary quadratic forms up to isometry. However, there are infinitely many equivalence classes of regular quadratic forms of rank $n$ for any integer $n$ greater than or equal to $4$. A regular quadratic form $f$ is called new if there does not exist a proper subform $g$ of $f$ such that the set of integers that are represented by $g$ is equal to the set of integers that are represented by $f$. In this article,…
Let $Q$ be a positive-definite quaternary quadratic form with integer coefficients. We study the problem of giving bounds on the largest positive integer $n$ that is locally represented by $Q$ but not represented. Assuming that $n$ is relatively prime to $D(Q)$, the determinant of the Gram matrix of $Q$, we show that $n$ is represented provided that \[ n \gg \max \{ N(Q)^{3/2 + ε} D(Q)^{5/4 + ε}, N(Q)^{2 + ε} D(Q)^{1 + ε} \}. \] Here $N(Q)$ is the level of $Q$. We give three other bounds that hold under successively weaker local conditions on $n$. These results are proven by bounding the Peter…
While investigating the Doi-Naganuma lift, Zagier defined integral weight cusp forms $f_D$ which are naturally defined in terms of binary quadratic forms of discriminant $D$. It was later determined by Kohnen and Zagier that the generating function for the $f_D$ is a half-integral weight cusp form. A natural preimage of $f_D$ under a differential operator at the heart of the theory of harmonic weak Maass forms was determined by the first two authors and Kohnen. In this paper, we consider the modularity properties of the generating function of these preimages. We prove that although the generat…
We consider the proportion of genus one curves over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the form $z^2=f(x,y)$ where $f(x,y)\in\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ is a binary quartic form (or more generally of the form $z^2+h(x,y)z=f(x,y)$ where also $h(x,y)\in\mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ is a binary quadratic form) that have points everywhere locally. We show that the proportion of these curves that are locally soluble, computed as a product of local densities, is approximately 75.96%. We prove that the local density at a prime $p$ is given by a fixed degree-$9$ rational function of $p$ for all odd $p$ (and for the generalised equation, the sa…
We consider the problem of classifying all positive-definite integer-valued quadratic forms that represent all positive odd integers. Kaplansky considered this problem for ternary forms, giving a list of 23 candidates, and proving that 19 of those represent all positive odds. (Jagy later dealt with a 20th candidate.) Assuming that the remaining three forms represent all positive odds, we prove that an arbitrary, positive-definite quadratic form represents all positive odds if and only if it represents the odd numbers from 1 up to 451. This result is analogous to Bhargava and Hanke's celebrated…
We formulate integral Iwasawa main conjectures for suitable twists of a newform $f$ that is non-ordinary at $p$, over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, the anticyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions (in both the definite and the indefinite cases) as well as the $\mathbb{Z}_p^2$-extension of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ where $p$ splits. In order to do so, we define Kobayashi-Sprung-style signed Coleman maps, which we use to introduce doubly-signed Selmer groups. In the same spirit, we construct signed (integral) Beilinson-Flach elements (out of the collection of unbounded Beilinson-Fl…
We prove the logarithmic Sarnak conjecture for sequences of subquadratic word growth. In particular, we show that the Liouville function has at least quadratically many sign patterns. We deduce the main theorem from a variant which bounds the correlations between multiplicative functions and sequences with subquadratically many sign patterns which occur with positive logarithmic density. This allows us to actually prove that our multiplicative functions do not locally correlate with sequences of subquadratic word growth. We also prove a conditional result which shows that if the $κ-1$-Fourier …
