We consider the problem of classifying all positive-definite integer-valued quadratic forms that represent all positive odd integers. Kaplansky considered this problem for ternary forms, giving a list of 23 candidates, and proving that 19 of those represent all positive odds. (Jagy later dealt with a 20th candidate.) Assuming that the remaining three forms represent all positive odds, we prove that an arbitrary, positive-definite quadratic form represents all positive odds if and only if it represents the odd numbers from 1 up to 451. This result is analogous to Bhargava and Hanke's celebrated 290-theorem. In addition, we prove that these three remaining ternaries represent all positive odd integers, assuming the generalized Riemann hypothesis.
This result is made possible by a new analytic method for bounding the cusp constants of integer-valued quaternary quadratic forms $Q$ with fundamental discriminant. This method is based on the analytic properties of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions, and we use it to prove that if $Q$ is a quaternary form with fundamental discriminant, the largest locally represented integer $n$ for which $Q(\vec{x}) = n$ has no integer solutions is $O(D^{2 + ε})$.
A (positive definite primitive integral) quadratic form is called odd-regular if it represents every odd positive integer which is locally represented. In this paper, we show that there are at most 147 diagonal odd-regular ternary quadratic forms and prove the odd-regularities of all but 6 candidates.
In 1997, Kaplansky conjectured that if two positive definite ternary quadratic forms with integer coefficients have perfectly identical integral representations, then they are isometric, both regular, or included either of two families of ternary quadratic forms. In this article, we prove the existence of pairs of ternary quadratic forms representing same integers which are not in the Kaplansky's list.
An integral quadratic polynomial (with positive definite quadratic part) is called almost universal if it represents all but finitely many positive integers. In this paper, we introduce the conductor of a quadratic polynomial, and give an effective characterization of almost universal ternary quadratic polynomials with odd prime power conductor.
We give formulas for local densities of diagonal integral ternary quadratic forms at odd primes. Exponential sums and quadratic Gauss sums are used to obtain these formulas. These formulas (along with 2-adic densities and Siegel's mass formula) can be used to compute the representation numbers of certain ternary quadratic forms.
Following Bhargava and Hanke's celebrated 290-theorem, we prove a universality theorem for all positive-definite integer-valued quadratic forms that represent all positive integers coprime to $3$. In particular, if a positive-definite quadratic form represents all positive integers coprime to $3$ and $\leq 290$, then it represents all positive integers coprime to $3$. We use similar methods to those used by Rouse to prove (assuming GRH) that a positive-definite quadratic form representing every odd integer between $1$ and $451$ represents all positive odd integers.
Let $K$ be a non-cylotomic imaginary quadratic field of class number 1 and $E/K$ is an elliptic curve with $E(K)[2]\simeq \mathbb{Z}_1.$ We determine the odd-order torsion groups that can arise as $E(L)_{\text{tor}}$ where $L$ is a quadratic extension of $K.$
This paper presents an adaptation of recently developed algorithms for quadratic forms over number fields in arXiv:1304.0708 to global function fields of odd characteristics. First, we present algorithm for checking if a given non-degenerate quadratic form is isotropic or hyperbolic. Next we devise a method for computing the dimension of the anisotropic part of a quadratic form. Finally we present algorithms computing two field invariants: the level and the Pythagoras number.
We give criteria of the solvability of the diophantine equation $p=x^2+ny^2$ over some imaginary quadratic fields where $p$ is a prime element. The criteria becomes quite simple in special cases.
In this paper, we show that if $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$ is prime, then $4F_p$ admits a representation of the form $u^2-pv^2$ for some integers $u$ and $v$, where $F_n$ is the $n$th Fibonacci number. We prove a similar result when $p\equiv -1\pmod 4$.
We study real quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{D})$ such that, for a given rational integer $m$, all $m$-multiples of totally positive integers are sums of squares. We prove quite sharp necessary and sufficient conditions for this to happen. Further, we give a fast algorithm that solves this question for specific $m$, $D$ and we give complete results for $m \leq 5000$.
For any distinct two primes $p_1\equiv p_2\equiv 3$ $(\text{mod }4)$, let $h(-p_1)$, $h(-p_2)$ and $h(p_1p_2)$ be the class numbers of the quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_1})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-p_2})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p_1p_2})$, respectively. Let $ω_{p_1p_2}:=(1+\sqrt{p_1p_2})/2$ and let $Ψ(ω_{p_1p_2})$ be the Hirzebruch sum of $ω_{p_1p_2}$. We show that $h(-p_1)h(-p_2)\equiv h(p_1p_2)Ψ(ω_{p_1p_2})/n$ $(\text{mod }8)$, where $n=6$ (respectively, $n=2$) if $\min\{p_1,p_2\}>3$ (respectively, otherwise). We also consider the real quadratic order with conductor $2$ in $\mathbb{Q}(\sqr…
The discretisation problem for even quadratic twists is almost understood, with the main question now being how the arithmetic Delaunay heuristic interacts with the analytic random matrix theory prediction. The situation for odd quadratic twists is much more mysterious, as the height of a point enters the picture, which does not necessarily take integral values (as does the order of the Shafarevich-Tate group). We discuss a couple of models and present data on this question.
In this paper we find a new lower bound on the number of imaginary quadratic extensions of the function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(x)$ whose class groups have elements of a fixed odd order. More precisely, for $q$, a power of an odd prime, and $g$ a fixed odd positive integer $\ge 3$, we show that for every $ε>0$, there are $\gg q^{L(1/2+\frac{3}{2(g+1)}-ε)}$ polynomials $f \in \mathbb{F}_{q}[x]$ with $°f=L$, for which the class group of the quadratic extension $\mathbb{F}_{q}(x, \sqrt{f})$ has an element of order $g$. This sharpens the previous lower bound $q^{L(1/2+\frac{1}{g})}$ of Ram Murty. Ou…
A positive quadratic form is $(k,\ell)$-universal if it represents all the numbers $kx+\ell$ where $x$ is a non-negative integer, and almost $(k,\ell)$-universal if it represents all but finitely many of them. We prove that for any $k,\ell$ such that $k\nmid\ell$ there exists an almost $(k,\ell)$-universal diagonal ternary form. We also conjecture that there are only finitely many primes $p$ for which a $(p,\ell)$-universal diagonal ternary form exists (for any $\ell<p$) and we show the results of computer experiments that speak in favor of the conjecture.
Let $K = \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3})$ or $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-1})$ and let $C_n$ denote the cyclic group of order $n$. We study how the torsion part of an elliptic curve over $K$ grows in a quadratic extension of $K$. In the case $E(K)[2] \approx C_1$ we investigate how a given torsion structure can grow in a quadratic extension and the maximum number of extensions in which it grows. We also study the torsion structures which occur as the quadratic twist of a given torsion structure. In order to achieve this we examine $N$-isogenies defined over $K$ for $N=15,20,21,24,27,30,35$.
We determine the minimal number of variables $Γ^*(d, K)$ which guarantees a nontrivial solution for every additive form of degree $d=2m$, $m$ odd, $m \ge 3$ over the six ramified quadratic extensions of $\mathbb{Q}_2$. We prove that if $K$ is one of $\{\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{10}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-2}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-10})\}$, $Γ^*(d,K) = \frac{3}{2}d$, and if $K$ is one of $\{\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-1}), \mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{-5})\}$, $Γ^*(d,K) = d+1$. The case $d=6$ was previously known.
Let n be an odd number and F an imaginary quadratic field with odd discriminant. We show that there exists infinitely many cubic fields K such that the class number of K is divisible by n and the Galois closure of K contains F.
This paper investigates the quadratic irrationals that arise as periodic points of the Gauss type shift associated to the odd continued fraction expansion. It is shown that these numbers, which we call O-reduced, when ordered by the length of the associated closed primitive geodesic on some modular surface $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$, are equidistributed with respect to the Lebesgue absolutely continuous invariant probability measure of the Odd Gauss shift.
In this paper, we consider the following diagonal quadratic forms \begin{equation*} a_1x_1^2 + a_2x_2^2 + \cdots + a_{\ell}x_{\ell}^2, \end{equation*} where $\ell\ge 5$ is an odd integer and $a_i\ge 1$ are integers. By using the extended Shimura correspondence, we obtain explicit formulas for the number of representations of $|D|n^2$ by the above type of quadratic forms, where $D$ is either a square-free integer or a fundamental discriminant such that $(-1)^{(\ell-1)/2}D > 0$. We demonstrate our method with many examples, in particular, we obtain all the formulas (when $\ell =5$) obtained in t…
Given an elliptic quartic of type $Y^2=f(X)$ representing an elliptic curve of positive rank over $\Q$, we investigate the question of when the $Y$-coordinate can be represented by a quadratic form of type $ap^2+bq^2$. In particular, we give examples of equations of surfaces of type $c_0+c_1x+c_2x^2+c_3x^3+c_4x^4=(ap^2+bq^2)^2$, $a,b,c \in \Q$ where we can deduce the existence of infinitely many rational points. We also investigate surfaces of type $Y^2=f(a p^2+b q^2)$ where the polynomial $f$ is of degree $3$.
Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $f(x)=\sum_{i=1}^ka_ix^{p^{α_i}+1}\in\Bbb F_{p^n}[x]$, where $0\le α_1<...<α_k$. We consider the exponential sum $S(f,n)=\sum_{x\in\Bbb F_{p^n}}e_n(f(x))$, where $e_n(y)=e^{2πi\text{Tr}_n(y)/p}$, $y\in\Bbb F_{p^n}$, $\text{Tr}_n=\text{Tr}_{\Bbb F_{p^n}/\Bbb F_p}$. There is an effective way to compute the nullity of the quadratic form $\text{Tr}_{mn}(f(x))$ for all integer $m>0$. Assuming that all such nullities are known, we find relative formulas for $S(f,mn)$ in terms of $S(f,n)$ when $ν_p(m) \le \min\{ν_p(α_i):1\le i\le k\}$, where $ν_p$ is the $p$-adic order…
In this paper we study products of quadratic residues modulo odd primes and prove some identities involving quadratic residues. For instance, let $p$ be an odd prime. We prove that if $p\equiv5\pmod8$, then $$\prod_{0<x<p/2,(\frac{x}{p})=1}x\equiv(-1)^{1+r}\pmod p,$$ where $(\frac{\cdot}{p})$ is the Legendre symbol and $r$ is the number of $4$-th power residues modulo $p$ in the interval $(0,p/2)$. Our work involves class number formula, quartic Gauss sums, Stickelberger's congruence and values of Dirichlet L-series at negative integers.
We construct a family of ideals representing ideal classes of order 2 in quadratic number fields and show that relations between their ideal classes are governed by certain cyclic quartic extensions of the rationals.
For every positive integer $k$ such that $k>1,$ there are an infinity of odd integers $h$ with $ω(h) =k$ distinct prime divisors such that there do not exist a Circulant Hadamard matrix $H$ of order $n=4h^2.$ Moreover, our main result implies that for all of the odd numbers $h$, with $1< h < 10^{13}$ there is no Circulant Hadamard matrix of order $n=4h^2.$
For each positive integer $n$, let $g_Δ(n)$ be the smallest positive integer $g$ such that every complete quadratic polynomial in $n$ variables which can be represented by a sum of odd squares is represented by a sum of at most $g$ odd squares. In this paper, we analyze $g_Δ(n)$ by studying representations of integral quadratic forms by sums of squares with certain congruence condition. We prove that the growth of $g_Δ(n)$ is at most an exponential of $\sqrt{n}$, which is the same as the best known upper bound on the $g$-invariants of the original quadratic Waring's problem. We also determine …
Let $q$ be a quadratic form over a field $F$ and let $L$ be a field extension of $F$ of odd degree. It is a classical result that if $q_L$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic) then $q$ is isotropic (resp. hyperbolic). In turn, given two quadratic forms $q, q^\prime$ over $F$, if $q_L \cong q^\prime_L$ then $q \cong q^\prime$. It is natural to ask whether similar results hold for algebras with involution. We give a survey of the progress on these three questions with particular attention to the relevance of hyperbolicity, isotropy and isomorphism over some {appropriate} function field. Incidentally,…
We describe a normal form for a smooth intersection of two quadrics in even-dimensional projective space over an arbitrary field of characteristic 2. We use this to obtain a description of the automorphism group of such a variety. As an application, we show that every quartic del Pezzo surface over a perfect field of characteristic 2 has a canonical rational point and, thus, is unirational.
Let $n$ be a squarefree positive odd integer. We will show that there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic number fields with discriminant divisible by $n$ and-at the same time-having an element of order $n$ in the class group. We then apply our result to prove that for a given squarefree positive odd integer $n$ there exist infinitely many $N$ such that $n$ divides both $N$ and $r(N)$, where $r(N)$ is the representation number of $N$ as sums of three squares.
Let $p$ be an odd prime. For each integer $a$ with $p\nmid a$, the famous Zolotarev's Lemma says that the Legendre symbol $(\frac{a}{p})$ is the sign of the permutation of $\Z/p\Z$ induced by multiplication by $a$. The extension of Zolotarev's result to the case of odd integers was shown by Frobenius. After that, Lerch extended these to all positive integers. In this paper we explore some applications of Lerch's result. For instance, we study permutations involving arbitrary $k$-th power residue modulo $p$ and primitive roots of a power of $p$. Finally, we discuss some permutation problems con…
Let p be an odd prime number. In this paper, we show existence of certain infinite families of imaginary quadratic fields in which p splits and whose Iwasawa λ-invariant of the cyclotomic Zp-extension is equal to 1.
For a given odd integer $n>1$, we provide some families of imaginary quadratic number fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{x^2-t^n})$ whose ideal class group has a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$.
A monic polynomial in F_q[t] of degree n over a finite field F_q of odd characteristic can be written as the sum of two irreducible monic elements in F_q[t] of degrees n and n-1 if q is larger than a bound depending only on n. The main tool is a sufficient condition for simultaneous primality of two polynomials in one variable x with coefficients in F_q[t].
Jagy and Kaplansky exhibited a table of 68 pairs of positive definite binary quadratic forms that represent the same odd primes and conjectured that this list is complete outside of "trivial" pairs. In this article, we find all pairs of such forms that represent the same primes outside of a finite set.
Let $k$ be an imaginary quadratic number field, and $F/k$ a finite abelian extension of Galois group $G$. We investigate the relationship between the conjectural special elements introduced in \cite{Burns-DeJeu-Gangl} and ETNC in the semi-simple case. This provides a partial proof of the conjecture for $F/k$ under certain conditions.
We find and prove a class of congruences modulo 4 for Andrews' partition with certain ternary quadratic form. We also discuss distribution of $\overline{\mathcal{EO}}(n)$ and further prove that $\overline{\mathcal{EO}}(n)\equiv0\pmod4$ for almost all $n$. This study was inspired by similar congruences modulo 4 in the work by the second author and Garvan.
Let $ψ$ and $F$ be positive definite forms with integral coefficients of equal degree. Using the circle method, we establish an asymptotic formula for the number of identical representations of $ψ$ by $F$, provided $ψ$ is everywhere locally representable and the number of variables of $F$ is large enough. In the quadratic case this supersedes a recent result due to Dietmann and Harvey. Another application addresses the number of primitive linear spaces contained in a hypersurface.
We say that a field extension $L/F$ has the descent property for isometry (resp. similarity) of quadratic or symmetric bilinear forms if any two forms defined over $F$ that become isometric (resp. similar) over $L$ are already isometric (resp. similar) over $F$. The famous Artin-Springer theorem states that anisotropic quadratic or symmetric bilinear forms over a field stay anisotropic over an odd degree field extension. As a consequence, odd degree extensions have the descent property for isometry of quadratic as well as symmetric bilinear forms. While this is well known for nonsingular quadr…
Let $n>1$ be an odd integer. We prove that there are infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{x^2-2y^n})$ whose ideal class group has an element of order $n$. This family gives a counter example to a conjecture by H. Wada \cite{WA70} on the structure of ideal class groups.
In this paper, we explicitly construct harmonic Maass forms that map to the weight one theta series associated by Hecke to odd ray class group characters of real quadratic fields. From this construction, we give precise arithmetic information contained in the Fourier coefficients of the holomorphic part of the harmonic Maass form, establishing the main part of a conjecture of the second author.
H. J. S. Smith proved Fermat's two-square theorem using the notion of palindromic continuants. In this paper we extend Smith's approach to proper binary quadratic form representations in some commutative Euclidean rings, including rings of integers and rings of polynomials over fields of odd characteristic. Also, we present new deterministic algorithms for finding the corresponding proper representations.
For any odd prime number $p$, let $(\cdot|p)$ be the Legendre symbol, and let $n_1(p)<n_2(p)<\cdots$ be the sequence of positive nonresidues modulo $p$, i.e., $(n_k|p)=-1$ for each $k$. In 1957, Burgess showed that the upper bound $n_1(p)\ll_εp^{(4\sqrt{e})^{-1}+ε}$ holds for any fixed $ε>0$. In this paper, we prove that the stronger bound $$ n_k(p)\ll p^{(4\sqrt{e})^{-1}}\exp\big(\sqrt{e^{-1}\log p\log\log p}\,\big) $$ holds for all odd primes $p$, where the implied constant is absolute, provided that $$ k\le p^{(8\sqrt{e})^{-1}} \exp\big(\tfrac12\sqrt{e^{-1}\log p\log\log p}-\tfrac12\log\log…
We prove that an additive form of degree $d=2m$, $m$ odd, $m\ge3$, over the unramified quadratic extension $\mathbb{Q}_2(\sqrt{5})$ has a nontrivial zero if the number of variables $s$ satisifies $s \ge 4d+1$. If $3 \nmid d$, then there exists a nontrivial zero if $s \ge \frac{3}{2}d + 1$, this bound being optimal. We give examples of forms in $3d$ variables without a nontrivial zero in case that $3 \mid d$.
We investigate here sums of triangular numbers $f(x):=\sum_i b_i T_{x_i}$ where $T_n$ is the $n$-th triangular number. We show that for a set of positive integers $S$ there is a finite subset $S_0$ such that $f$ represents $S$ if and only if $f$ represents $S_0$. However, computationally determining $S_0$ is ineffective for many choices of $S$. We give an explicit and efficient algorithm to determine the set $S_0$ under certain Generalized Riemann Hypotheses, and implement the algorithm to determine $S_0$ when $S$ is the set of all odd integers.
For any odd prime $p,$ we construct an infinite family of pairs of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}),\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ whose class numbers are both divisible by $p.$ One of our theorems settles Iizuka's conjecture for the case $n=1$ and $p >2.$
Let $D$ be an odd square-free positive integer and $C$ a divisor of $D$. For any quadratic character $χ$ modulo $C$, we prove that the $χ$-part of the group $J_0(DC)_\text{tor}$ of torsion points of $J_0(DC)$ coincides with the $χ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
Let $-D < -4$ denote a fundamental discriminant which is either odd or divisible by 8, so that the canonical Hecke character of $\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$ exists. Let $d$ be a fundamental discriminant prime to $D$. Let $2k-1$ be an odd natural integer prime to the class number of $\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$. Let $χ$ be the twist of the $(2k-1)$th power of a canonical Hecke character of $\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$ by the Kronecker's symbol $n\mapsto(\frac{d}{n})$. It is proved that the order of the Hecke $L$-function $L(s,χ)$ at its central point $s=k$ is determined by its root number when $|d| \leq c(ε)D^{{1/24}-ε}$…
