In this paper we find a new lower bound on the number of imaginary quadratic extensions of the function field $\mathbb{F}_{q}(x)$ whose class groups have elements of a fixed odd order. More precisely, for $q$, a power of an odd prime, and $g$ a fixed odd positive integer $\ge 3$, we show that for every $ε>0$, there are $\gg q^{L(1/2+\frac{3}{2(g+1)}-ε)}$ polynomials $f \in \mathbb{F}_{q}[x]$ with $°f=L$, for which the class group of the quadratic extension $\mathbb{F}_{q}(x, \sqrt{f})$ has an element of order $g$. This sharpens the previous lower bound $q^{L(1/2+\frac{1}{g})}$ of Ram Murty. Our result is a function field analogue to a similar result of Soundararajan for number fields.
For a given odd integer $n>1$, we provide some families of imaginary quadratic number fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{x^2-t^n})$ whose ideal class group has a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$.
For any odd prime $p,$ we construct an infinite family of pairs of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}),\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ whose class numbers are both divisible by $p.$ One of our theorems settles Iizuka's conjecture for the case $n=1$ and $p >2.$
Let $k \geq 1$ be a cube-free integer with $k \equiv 1 \pmod {9}$ and $\gcd(k, 7\cdot 571)=1$. In this paper, we prove the existence of infinitely many triples of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$, $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1})$ and $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+k^2})$ with $d \in \mathbb{Z}$ such that the class number of each of them is divisible by $3$. This affirmatively answers a weaker version of a conjecture of Iizuka \cite{iizuka-jnt}.
Let $n$ be a squarefree positive odd integer. We will show that there exist infinitely many imaginary quadratic number fields with discriminant divisible by $n$ and-at the same time-having an element of order $n$ in the class group. We then apply our result to prove that for a given squarefree positive odd integer $n$ there exist infinitely many $N$ such that $n$ divides both $N$ and $r(N)$, where $r(N)$ is the representation number of $N$ as sums of three squares.
Let $k\geq 3$ and $n\geq 3$ be odd integers, and let $m\geq 0$ be any integer. For a prime number $\ell$, we prove that the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{\ell^{2m}-2k^n})$ is either divisible by $n$ or by a specific divisor of $n$. Applying this result, we construct an infinite family of certain tuples of imaginary quadratic fields of the form $$\left(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{4d+1}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4}), \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+16}), \cdots, \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2d+4^t}) \right)$$ with $d\in \mathbb{Z}$ and $1\leq 4^t\leq 2|d|…
In this note we revisit classic work of Soundararajan on class groups of imaginary quadratic fields. Let $A,B,g \ge 3$ be positive integers such that $\gcd(A,B)$ is square-free. We refine Soundararajan's result to show that if $4 \nmid g$ or if $A$ and $B$ satisfy certain conditions, then the number of negative square-free $D \equiv A \pmod{B}$ down to $-X$ such that the ideal class group of $\mathbb{Q} (\sqrt{D})$ contains an element of order $g$ is bounded below by $X^{\frac{1}{2} + ε(g) - ε}$, where the exponent is the same as in Soundararajan's theorem. Combining this with a theorem of Fre…
We study some divisibility properties of multiperfect numbers. Our main result is: if $N=p_1^{α_1}... p_s^{α_s} q_1^{2β_1}... q_t^{2β_t}$ with $β_1, ..., β_t$ in some finite set S satisfies $σ(N)=\frac{n}{d}N$, then N has a prime factor smaller than C, where C is an effective computable constant depending only on s, n, S.
We provide a way to modify and to extend a previously established inequality by P. Erdős, R. Graham and others and to answer a conjecture posed in the nineties by R. Graham, which bears on the lack of divisibility of the central binomial coefficient by three distinct, fixed odd primes. In fact the result will show by using an approach similar to their own which they proved for the case of two fixed odd primes, that the central binomial coefficient is not divisible infinitely often by three distinct and fixed odd primes. Therefore a generalization to more fixed odd primes than three but finite …
We improve Kolyvagin's upper bound on the order of the $p$-primary part of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve of rank one over a quadratic imaginary field. In many cases, our bound is precisely the one predicted by the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula.
Let n be an odd number and F an imaginary quadratic field with odd discriminant. We show that there exists infinitely many cubic fields K such that the class number of K is divisible by n and the Galois closure of K contains F.
We shall give an explicit upper bound for the smallest prime factor of multiperfect numbers of the form $N=p_1^{α_1}\cdots p_s^{α_s} q_1^{β_1}\cdots q_t^{β_t}$ with $β_1, \ldots, β_t$ bounded by a given constant. We shall also give similar results for quasiperfect numbers and relatively prime amicable pairs of opposite parity.
Let $U = (U_n)_{n \geq 0}$ be a Lucas sequence and, for every prime number $p$, let $ρ_U(p)$ be the rank of appearance of $p$ in $U$, that is, the smallest positive integer $k$ such that $p$ divides $U_k$, whenever it exists. Furthermore, let $d$ be an odd positive integer. Under some mild hypotheses, we prove an asymptotic formula for the number of primes $p \leq x$ such that $d$ divides $ρ_U(p)$, as $x \to +\infty$.
Let $K$ be a non-cylotomic imaginary quadratic field of class number 1 and $E/K$ is an elliptic curve with $E(K)[2]\simeq \mathbb{Z}_1.$ We determine the odd-order torsion groups that can arise as $E(L)_{\text{tor}}$ where $L$ is a quadratic extension of $K.$
Let $a\geq 1$ and $n>1$ be odd integers. For a given prime $p$, we prove under certain conditions that the class groups of imaginary quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a^2-4p^n})$ have a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$. We also show that this family of fields has infinitely many members with the property that their class groups have a subgroup isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$. In addition, we deduce some unconditional results concerning the divisibility of the class numbers of certain imaginary quadratic fields. At the end, we provide some numerical examples to verify our…
Let $p$ be a prime number and let $k$ be a number field. Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $k$. We prove that if $p$ is odd, then the local-global divisibility by any power of $p$ holds for the torsion points of $E$. We also show with an example that the hypothesis over $p$ is necessary. We get a weak generalization of the result on elliptic curves to the larger family of ${\rm GL}_2$-type varieties over $k$. In the special case of the abelian surfaces $A/k$ with quaternionic multiplication over $k$ we obtain that for all prime $p$, except a finite number depending on $A$, the local-gl…
Let p be a prime number which is split in an imaginary quadratic field k. Let \mathfrak{p} be a place of k above p. Let k_\infty be the unique Z_p-extension of k which unramified outside of \mathfrak{p}, and let K_\intfy be a finite extension of k_\infty, abelian over k. In case p \notin {2,3}, we prove that the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of global units modulo elliptic units coincides with the characteristic ideal of the projective limit of the p-class groups. Our approach uses Euler systems, which were first used in this context by K.Rubin. If p \in {2,3}, we obtain a divis…
We extend a holomorphic projection argument of our earlier work to prove a novel divisibility result for non-holomorphic congruences of Hurwitz class numbers. This result allows us to establish Ramanujan-type congruences for Hurwitz class numbers on square classes, where the holomorphic case parallels previous work by Radu on partition congruences. We offer two applications. The first application demonstrates common divisibility features of Ramanujan-type congruences for Hurwitz class numbers. The second application provides a dichotomy between congruences for class numbers of imaginary quadra…
A natural number $n$ is called {\it multiperfect} or {\it$k$-perfect} for integer $k\ge2$ if $σ(n)=kn$, where $σ(n)$ is the sum of the positive divisors of $n$. In this paper, we establish the structure theorem of odd multiperfect numbers analogous as Euler's theorem on odd perfect numbers. We prove the divisibility of the Euler part of odd multiperfect numbers and characterize the forms of odd perfect numbers $n=π^αM^2$ such that $π\equivα(\text{mod}8)$. We also present some examples to show the nonexistence of odd perfect numbers as applications.
Let K/k be an Abelian extension of number fields, S be a set of places of k, and p be an odd prime number. We continue an earlier investigation of the author into the values at zero of the S-imprimitive partial zeta functions of K/k. An earlier result provides, under the assumption that the p-power roots of unity in K are cohomologically trivial, a criterion for the values to have larger than expected p-valuation. The present paper provides such a criterion for a special class of degree 2p extensions for which the p-power roots of unity are not cohomologically trivial. For such extensions, new…
The goal is to obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of quadratic extensions with bounded discriminant of a some quadratic number field with odd class number. This extends an already known result for Q.
Let p be an odd prime number. In this paper, we show existence of certain infinite families of imaginary quadratic fields in which p splits and whose Iwasawa λ-invariant of the cyclotomic Zp-extension is equal to 1.
Boston, Bush, and Hajir have developed heuristics, extending the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics, that conjecture the distribution of the Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro-p extensions of imaginary quadratic number fields for p an odd prime. In this paper, we find the moments of their proposed distribution, and further prove there is a unique distribution with those moments. Further, we show that in the function field analog, for imaginary quadratic extensions of F_q(t), the Galois groups of the maximal unramified pro-p extensions, as q goes to infinity, have the moments predicted by the Bo…
Let $n>1$ be an odd integer. We prove that there are infinitely many imaginary quadratic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{x^2-2y^n})$ whose ideal class group has an element of order $n$. This family gives a counter example to a conjecture by H. Wada \cite{WA70} on the structure of ideal class groups.
The partial Stirling numbers T_n(k) used here are defined as the sum over odd values of i of (n choose i) i^k. Their 2-exponents nu(T_n(k)) are important in algebraic topology. We provide many specific results, applying to all values of n, stating that, for all k in a certain congruence class mod 2^t, nu(T_n(k)) = nu(k - k0) + c0, where k0 is a 2-adic integer and c0 a positive integer. Our analysis involves several new general results for nu(sum (n choose 2i+1) i^j), the proofs of which involve a new family of polynomials. Following Clarke, we interpret T_n as a function on the 2-adic integers…
For integers $N\geq 3$ and $g\geq 1$, we study bounds on the cardinality of the set of points of order dividing $N$ lying on a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g$ embedded in its jacobian using a Weierstrass point as base point. This leads us to revisit division polynomials introduced by Cantor in 1995 and strengthen a divisibility result proved by him. Several examples are discussed.
Andrews and Newman introduced the mex-function $\text{mex}_{A,a}(λ)$ for an integer partition $λ$ of a positive integer $n$ as the smallest positive integer congruent to $a$ modulo $A$ that is not a part of $λ$. They then defined $p_{A,a}(n)$ to be the number of partitions $λ$ of $n$ satisfying $\text{mex}_{A,a}(λ)\equiv a\pmod{2A}$. They found the generating function for $p_{t,t}(n)$ and $p_{2t,t}(n)$ for any positive integer $t$, and studied their arithmetic properties for some small values of $t$. In this article, we study the partition function $p_{mt,t}(n)$ for all positive integers $m$ a…
Let $d$ be an odd square-free integer and $ζ_8$ a primitive $8$-th root of unity. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the rank of the $2$-class group of the fields $L_d=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_8,\sqrt{d})$.
Let $\mathcal{F}(h)$ be the number of imaginary quadratic fields with class number $h$. In this note, we improve the error term in Soundararajan's asymptotic formula for the average of $\mathcal{F}(h)$. Our argument leads to a similar refinement of the asymptotic for the average of $\mathcal{F}(h)$ over odd $h$, which was recently obtained by Holmin, Jones, Kurlberg, McLeman and Petersen.
The aim of this paper is to study the group of elliptic units of a cyclic extension $L$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ such that the degree $[L:K]$ is a power of an odd prime $p$. We construct an explicit root of the usual top generator of this group and we use it to obtain an annihilation result of the $p$-Sylow subgroup of the ideal class group of $L$.
We consider the values taken by $n\times n$ circulant determinants with integer entries when $n$ is the product of two distinct odd primes $p,q$. These correspond to the integer group determinants for $\mathbb Z_{pq}$, the cyclic group of order $pq$. We show that $p^2$ and $q^2$ are not determinants (more generally we show that the classic necessary divisibility conditions are never sufficient when $n$ contains at least two odd primes). We obtain a complete description of the integer group determinants for $\mathbb Z_{15}$ (the smallest unresolved group) and partial results for general $n=3p.$
Let $ p $ and $ q $ be odd prime numbers with $ q - p = 2, $ the $φ-$Selmer groups, Shafarevich-Tate groups ($ φ- $ and $ 2-$part) and their dual ones as well the Mordell-Weil groups of elliptic curves $ y^{2} = x (x \pm p) (x \pm q) $ over imaginary quadratic number fields of class number one are determined explicitly in many cases.
We investigate the number ${\Cal F}(h)$ of imaginary quadratic fields with class number $h$. We establish an asymptotic formula for the average value of ${\Cal F}(h)$. We also establish a modest non-trivial upper bound for ${\Cal F}(h)$ and give an application to a question of Rosen and Silverman on the odd part of the class number. Finally, we speculate on the asymptotic nature of ${\Cal F}(h)$.
Let $k$ be an imaginary quadratic field and $p$ an odd prime number such that the $p$-rank of the class group of $k$ is one. Let $S$ be a finite set of places of $k$ distinct from $p$-adic places. We give sufficient conditions for the Galois group $G_S$, of the maximal pro-$p$-extension of $k$ which is unramified outside $S$, to be \textit{mild}, hence of cohomological dimension $2$.
Let $-D < -4$ denote a fundamental discriminant which is either odd or divisible by 8, so that the canonical Hecke character of $\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$ exists. Let $d$ be a fundamental discriminant prime to $D$. Let $2k-1$ be an odd natural integer prime to the class number of $\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$. Let $χ$ be the twist of the $(2k-1)$th power of a canonical Hecke character of $\Bbb Q(\sqrt{-D})$ by the Kronecker's symbol $n\mapsto(\frac{d}{n})$. It is proved that the order of the Hecke $L$-function $L(s,χ)$ at its central point $s=k$ is determined by its root number when $|d| \leq c(ε)D^{{1/24}-ε}$…
Kurepa's hypothesis asserts that for each integer $n\ge 2$ the greatest common divisor of $!n:=\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}k!$ and $n!$ is $2$. Motivated by an equivalent formulation of this hypothesis involving derangement numbers, here we give a formulation of Kurepa's hypothesis in terms of divisibility of any Kurepa's determinant $K_p$ of order $p-4$ by a prime $p\ge 7$. In the previous version of this article we have proposed the strong Kurepa's hypothesis involving a general Kurepa's determinant $K_n$ with any integer $n\ge 7$. We prove the ``even part'' of this hypothesis which can be considered as…
Let $k$ be an imaginary quadratic number field, and $F/k$ a finite abelian extension of Galois group $G$. We investigate the relationship between the conjectural special elements introduced in \cite{Burns-DeJeu-Gangl} and ETNC in the semi-simple case. This provides a partial proof of the conjecture for $F/k$ under certain conditions.
We investigate properties of attainable partitions of integers, where a partition $(n_1,n_2, \dots, n_r)$ of $n$ is attainable if $\sum (3-2i)n_i\geq 0$. Conjecturally, under an extension of the Cohen and Lenstra heuristics by Holmin et. al., these partitions correspond to abelian $p$-groups that appear as class groups of imaginary quadratic number fields for infinitely many odd primes $p$. We demonstrate a connection to partitions of integers into triangular numbers, construct a generating function for attainable partitions, and determine the maximal length of attainable partitions.
For any odd prime $\ell$, let $h_\ell(-d)$ denote the $\ell$-part of the class number of the imaginary quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$. Nontrivial pointwise upper bounds are known only for $\ell =3$; nontrivial upper bounds for averages of $h_\ell(-d)$ have previously been known only for $\ell =3,5$. In this paper we prove nontrivial upper bounds for the average of $h_\ell(-d)$ for all primes $\ell \geq 7$, as well as nontrivial upper bounds for certain higher moments for all primes $\ell \geq 3$.
For an odd prime number $p$, we study the number of generators of the unramified Iwasawa modules of the maximal multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extensions over Iwasawa algebra. In a previous paper of the authors, under several assumptions for an imaginary quadratic field, we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the Iwasawa module to be cyclic as a module over the Iwasawa algebla. Our main result is to give methods for computation and numerical examples about the results. We remark that our results do not need the assumption that Greenberg's generalized conjecture holds.
In this article, we study special values of the Dedekind zeta function over an imaginary quadratic field. The values of the Dedekind zeta function at any even integer over any totally real number field is quite well known in literature. In fact, in one of the famous article, Zagier obtained an explicit formula for Dedekind zeta function at point 2 and conjectured an identity at any even values over any number field. We here exhibit the identities for both even and odd values of the Dedekind zeta function over an imaginary quadratic field which are analogous to Ramanujan's identities for even a…
The number F(h) of imaginary quadratic fields with a given class number h is of classical interest: Gauss' class number problem asks for a determination of those fields counted by F(h). The unconditional computation of F(h) for h up to 100 was completed by M. Watkins, using ideas of Goldfeld and Gross-Zagier; Soundararajan has more recently made conjectures about the order of magnitude of F(h) as h increases without bound, and determined its average order. In the present paper, we refine Soundararajan's conjecture to a conjectural asymptotic formula and also consider the subtler problem of det…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and $k$ an imaginary quadratic field in which $p$ splits. In this paper, we consider a weak form of Greenberg's generalized conjecture for $p$ and $k$, which states that the non-trivial Iwasawa module of the maximal multiple $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension field over $k$ has a non-trivial pseudo-null submodule. We prove this conjecture for $p$ and $k$ under the assumption that the Iwasawa $λ$-invariant for a certain $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension over a finite abelian extension of $k$ vanishes and that the characteristic ideal of the Iwasawa module associated to the cyclotomi…
In this paper we introduce a class of sequences connected with the $m$--ary partition function and investigate their congruence properties. In particular, we get facts about the sequences of $m$--ary partitions $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $m$--ary partitions with no gaps $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$. We prove, for example, that for any natural number $2<h\leq m+1$ in both sequences $(b_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ and $(c_{m}(n))_{m\in\mathbb{N}}$ any residue class modulo $h$ appears infinitely many times. Moreover, we give new proofs of characterisations modulo $m$ in terms of base--$m$ r…
