In a graph G, the cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that distinguishes every element of V (G) (resp. E(G)) is called the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of G. In [16] it was shown that both vertex and edge metric dimension of a unicyclic graph G always take values from just two explicitly given consecutive integers that are derived from the structure of the graph. A natural problem that arises is to determine under what conditions these dimensions take each of the two possible values. In this paper for each of these two metric dimensions we characterize three graph configurations and prove that it takes the greater of the two possible values if and only if the graph contains at least one of these configurations. One of these configurations is the same for both dimensions, while the other two are specific for each of them. This enables us to establish the exact value of the metric dimensions for a unicyclic graph and also to characterize when each of these two dimensions is greater than the other one.
In this paper, we give a characterization of unicyclic graphs with diameter at most 4 which are A-vertex magic. Moreover, let G be a bicyclic graph of diameter 3, then G is group vertex magic if and only if G = M11(0, 0).
A simple $n$-vertex graph has a prime vertex labeling if the vertices can be injectively labeled with the integers $1, 2, 3,\ldots, n$ such that adjacent vertices have relatively prime labels. We will present previously unknown prime vertex labelings for new families of graphs, all of which are special cases of Seoud and Youssef's conjecture that all unicyclic graphs have a prime labeling.
Let $x_1, x_2, \dots, x_n$ be the eigenvalues of a signed graph $Γ$ of order $n$. The energy of $Γ$ is defined as $E(Γ)=\sum^{n}_{j=1}|x_j|.$ Let $\mathcal{P}_n^4$ be obtained by connecting a vertex of the negative circle $(C_4,{\overlineσ})$ with a terminal vertex of the path $P_{n-4}$. In this paper, we show that for $n=4,6$ and $n \geq 8,$ $\mathcal{P}_n^4$ has the maximal energy among all connected unicyclic $n$-vertex signed graphs, except the cycles $C_5^+, C_7^+.$
Let $G = (V_G,E_G)$ be a simple connected graph. The eccentric distance sum of $G$ is defined as $ξ^d(G)=\sum_{v \in V_G}\,\varepsilon_G(v)D_G(v),$ where $\varepsilon_G(v)$ is the eccentricity of the vertex $v$ and $D_G(v)=\sum_{u \in V_G}\,d(u,v)$ is the sum of all distances from the vertex $v$. In this paper, we characterize $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with given matching number having the minimal and second minimal eccentric distance sums, respectively.
The general sum-connectivity index of a graph $G$ is defined as $χ_α(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)} {(d(u)+d(v))^α}$, where $d(v)$ denotes the degree of the vertex $v$ in $G$ and $α$ is a real number. In this paper it is deduced the maximum value for the general sum-connectivity index of $n$-vertex trees for $-1.7036\leq α<0$ and of $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs for $-1\le α<0$ respectively, with fixed maximum degree $\triangle $. The corresponding extremal graphs, as well as the $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the second maximum general sum-connectivity index for $n\ge 4$ are characterized. This …
Cut vertices are often used as a measure of nodes' importance within a network. They are those nodes whose failure disconnects a graph. Let N(G) be the number of connected induced subgraphs of a graph $G$. In this work, we investigate the maximum of N(G) where $G$ is a unicyclic graph with $n$ nodes of which $c$ are cut vertices. For all valid $n,c$, we give a full description of those maximal (that maximise N(.)) unicyclic graphs. It is found that there are generally two maximal unicyclic graphs. For infinitely many values of $n,c$, however, there is a unique maximal unicyclic graph with $n$ …
The metric (resp. edge metric) dimension of a simple connected graph $G$, denoted by dim$(G)$ (resp. edim$(G)$), is the cardinality of a smallest vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ for which every two distinct vertices (resp. edges) in $G$ have distinct distances to a vertex of $S$. It is an interesting topic to discuss the relation between dim$(G)$ and edim$(G)$ for some class of graphs $G$. In this paper, we settle two open problems on this topic for a widely studied class of graphs, called unicyclic graphs. Specifically, we introduce four classes of subgraphs to characterize the structure of a…
Let $G$ be an unicyclic graph of order $n$ and let $Q_G(x)= det(xI-Q(G))={matrix} \sum_{i=1}^n (-1)^i φ_i x^{n-i}{matrix}$ be the characteristic polynomial of the signless Laplacian matrix of a graph $G$. We give some transformations of $G$ which decrease all signless Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$. $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$ denotes all n-vertex unicyclic graphs with matching number $m$. We characterize the graphs which minimize all the signless Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$ with odd (resp. even) girth. Moreover, we find the extremal graphs which have mini…
The vertex-edge incidence matrix of a (connected) unicyclic graph G is a square matrix which is invertible if and only if the cycle of G is an odd cycle. A combinatorial formula of the inverse of the incidence matrix of an odd unicyclic graph was known. A combinatorial formula of the Moore-Penrose inverse of the incidence matrix of an even unicyclic graph is presented solving an open problem.
We obtain the maximum sum-connectivity indices of graphs in the set of trees and in the set of unicyclic graphs respectively with given number of vertices and maximum degree, and determine the corresponding extremal graphs. Additionally, we deduce the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with the first two maximum sum-connectivity indices for $n\ge 4$.
In the study of topological indices two negative correlations are well known: that between the number of subtrees and the Wiener index (sum of distances), and that between the Merrifield-Simmons index (number of independent vertex subsets) and the Hosoya index (number of independent edge subsets). That is, among a certain class of graphs, the extremal graphs that maximize one index usually minimize the other, and vice versa. In this paper, we first study the numbers of subtrees in unicyclic graphs and unicyclic graphs with a given girth, further confirming its opposite behavior to the Wiener i…
Given an ordered partition $Π=\{P_1,P_2, ...,P_t\}$ of the vertex set $V$ of a connected graph $G=(V,E)$, the \emph{partition representation} of a vertex $v\in V$ with respect to the partition $Π$ is the vector $r(v|Π)=(d(v,P_1),d(v,P_2),...,d(v,P_t))$, where $d(v,P_i)$ represents the distance between the vertex $v$ and the set $P_i$. A partition $Π$ of $V$ is a \emph{resolving partition} if different vertices of $G$ have different partition representations, i.e., for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V$, $r(u|Π)\ne r(v|Π)$. The \emph{partition dimension} of $G$ is the minimum number of sets in a…
In this paper we define cycle-star graph CSk,n-k to be a graph on n vertices consisting of the cycle of length k and n-k leafs appended to the same vertex of the cycle. Also, we define cycle-path graph CPk,n-k to be a graph on n vertices consisting of the cycle of length k and of path on n-k vertices whose one end is linked to a vertex on a cycle. We establish that cycle-star graph CS3,n-3 is the only maximal graph with respect to additively weighted Harary index among all unicyclic graphs on n vertices, while cycle-path graph CP3,n-3 is the only minimal unicyclic graph (here n must be at leas…
The trees, respectively unicyclic graphs, on $n$ vertices with the smallest Laplacian permanent are studied. In this paper, by edge-grafting transformations, the $n$-vertex trees of given bipartition having the second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are identified. Similarly, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs of given bipartition having the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are characterized. Consequently, the $n$-vertex bipartite unicyclic graphs with the first, second and third smallest Laplacian permanent are determined.
Let $G$ be a finite simple undirected $(p,q)$-graph, with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$ such that $p=|V(G)|$ and $q=|E(G)|$. A super edge-magic total labeling $f$ of $G$ is a bijection $f\colon V(G)\cup E(G)\longrightarrow \{1,2,\dots , p+q\}$ such that for all edges $u v\in E(G)$, $f(u)+f(v)+f(u v)=c(f)$, where $c(f)$ is called a magic constant, and $f(V(G))=\{1,\dots , p\}$. The minimum of all $c(f)$, where the minimum is taken over all the super edge-magic total labelings $f$ of $G$, is defined to be the super edge-magic total strength of the graph $G$. In this article, we work on c…
A connected $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges is called $r$-cyclic if $n=m(k-1)-r+1$. For $r=1$ or $2$, the hypergraph is simply called unicyclic or bicyclic. In this paper we investigate hypergraphs that attain larger spectral radii among all simple connected $k$-uniform unicyclic and bicyclic hypergraphs. Specifically, by using some edge operations, the formula on power hypergraph eigenvalues, the weighted incidence matrix and a result on linear unicyclic hypergraphs, we determined the first five hypergraphs with larger spectral radius among all unicyclic hypergraphs and…
For a connected graph $G$, the distance Laplacian spectral radius of $G$ is the spectral radius of its distance Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(G)$ defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)=Tr(G)-D(G)$, where $Tr(G)$ is a diagonal matrix of vertex transmissions of $G$ and $D(G)$ is the distance matrix of $G$. In this paper, we determine the unique graphs with maximum distance Laplacian spectral radius among unicyclic graphs.
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $\mathcal{L}(G,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n (-1)^{k}c_{k}(G)λ^{n-k}$ be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix. Motivated by Ilić and Ilić's conjecture [A. Ilić, M. Ilić, Laplacian coefficients of trees with given number of leaves or vertices of degree two, Linear Algebra and its Applications 431(2009)2195-2202.] on all extremal graphs which minimize all the Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}$ of all $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the number of leaves $l$, we investigate properties of the minimal elements in the partial set $(\mathc…
The energy of a simple graph $G$, denoted by $E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Denote by $C_n$ the cycle, and $P_n^{6}$ the unicyclic graph obtained by connecting a vertex of $C_6$ with a leaf of $P_{n-6}$\,. Caporossi et al. conjecture that the unicyclic graph with maximal energy is $P_n^6$ for $n=8,12,14$ and $n\geq 16$. In``Y. Hou, I. Gutman and C. Woo, Unicyclic graphs with maximal energy, {\it Linear Algebra Appl.} {\bf 356}(2002), 27--36", the authors proved that $E(P_n^6)$ is maximal within the class of the unicyclic biparti…
The \emph{metric dimension} $\dim(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of vertices such that every vertex of $G$ is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to the chosen vertices. The \emph{zero forcing number} $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a set $S$ of black vertices (whereas vertices in $V(G)\!\setminus\!S$ are colored white) such that $V(G)$ is turned black after finitely many applications of "the color-change rule": a white vertex is converted black if it is the only white neighbor of a black vertex. We show that $\dim(T) \leq Z(T)$ for a tree $T$, and that…
Given a graph $G$, the burning number of $G$ is the smallest integer $k$ for which there are vertices $x_1, x_2,\ldots,x_k$ such that $(x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_k)$ is a burning sequence of $G$. It has been shown that the graph burning problem is NP-complete, even for trees with maximum degree three, or linear forests. A $t$-unicyclic graph is a unicycle graph with exactly one vertex of degree greater than $2$. In this paper, we first present the bounds for the burning number of $t$-unicyclic graphs, and then use the burning numbers of linear forests with at most three components to determine the burn…
In a graph G; a vertex (resp. an edge) metric generator is a set of vertices S such that any pair of vertices (resp. edges) from G is distinguished by at least one vertex from S: The cardinality of a smallest vertex (resp. edge) metric generator is the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of G: In [19] we determined the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of unicyclic graphs and that it takes its value from two consecutive integers. Therein, several cycle configurations were introduced and the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension takes the greater of the two consecutive values only if any of …
Let $H_n$ be the cactus obtained from the star $K_{1,n-1}$ by adding $\lfloor \frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor$ independent edges between pairs of pendant vertices. Let $K_{1,n-1}^+$ be the unicyclic graph obtained from the star $K_{1,n-1}$ by appending one edge. In this paper we give alternative proofs of the following results: Among all cacti with $n$ vertices, $H_n$ is the unique cactus whose spectral radius is maximal, and among all unicyclic graphs with $n$ vertices, $K_{1,n-1}^+$ is the unique unicyclic graph whose spectral radius is maximal. We also prove that among all odd-cycle graphs with $n$ ve…
Let $G$ be a unicyclic graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. For any integer $s\geq 1$, we denote the $s$-th symbolic power of $I(G)$ by $I(G)^{(s)}$. It is shown that ${\rm reg}(I(G)^{(s)})={\rm reg}(I(G)^s)$, for every $s\geq 1$.
In 2021, the Sombor index was introduced by Gutman, which is a new degree-based topological molecular descriptors. The Sombor index of a graph $G$ is defined as $SO(G) =\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d^2_G(u)+d^2_G(v)}$, where $d_G(v)$ is the degree of the vertex $v$ in $G$. Let $\mathscr{T}_{n,m}$ and $\mathscr{U}_{n,m}$ be the set of trees and unicyclic graphs on $n$ vertices with fixed matching number $m$, respectively. In this paper, the tree and the unicyclic graph with the maximum Sombor index are determined among $\mathscr{T}_{n,m}$ and $\mathscr{U}_{n,m}$, respectively.
Let $d_G(v)$ be the degree of the vertex $v$ in a graph $G$. The Sombor index of $G$ is defined as $SO(G) =\sum_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d^2_G(u)+d^2_G(v)}$, which is a new degree-based topological index introduced by Gutman. Let $\mathscr{T}_{n,Δ}$ and $\mathscr{U}_{n,Δ}$ be the set of trees and unicyclic graphs with $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$, respectively. In this paper, the tree and the unicyclic graph with minimum Sombor index among $\mathscr{T}_{n,Δ}$ and $\mathscr{U}_{n,Δ}$ are characterized.
The zeroth-order general Randić index $R^{0}_{a}$ of a digraph $D$ is the sum of $(d^{+}_{v})^{a}+(d^{-}_{w})^{a}$ over all arcs $vw$ of $D$, where $a$, $d^{+}_{v}$ and $d^{-}_{w}$ are an arbitrary real number, the out-degree of the vertex $v$ and the in-degree of the vertex $w$, respectively. We determine maximum zeroth-order general Randić index of oriented trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs in terms of matching number and order in this paper.
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we consider two classes of unicyclic graphs, the star with an extra edge and the path with a triangle at one end. We provide the $2$-color Ramsey numbers for these two classes of graphs and use these to obtain general upper and lower bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers.
The Hosoya index $Z (G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined as the total number of edge independent sets of $G$. In this paper, we extend the research of [J. Ou, On extremal unicyclic molecular graphs with maximal Hosoya index, \textit{Discrete Appl. Math.} 157 (2009) 391--397.] and [Y. Ye, X. Pan, H. Liu, Ordering unicyclic graphs with respect to Hosoya indices and Merrifield-Simmons indices, \textit{MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem.} 59 (2008) 191--202.] and order the largest $n-1$ unicyclic graphs with respect to the Hosoya index.
Over all graphs (or unicyclic graphs) of a given order, we characterise those graphs that minimise or maximise the number of connected induced subgraphs. For each of these classes, we find that the graphs that minimise the number of connected induced subgraphs coincide with those that are known to maximise the Wiener index (the sum of the distances between all unordered pairs of vertices), and vice versa. For every $k$, we also determine the connected graphs that are extremal with respect to the number of $k$-vertex connected induced subgraphs. We show that, in contrast to the minimum which is…
A close relation between hitting times of the simple random walk on a graph, the Kirchhoff index, resistance-centrality, and related invariants of unicyclic graphs is displayed. Combining with the graph transformations and some other techniques, sharp upper and lower bounds on the cover cost (resp. reverse cover cost) of a vertex in an $n$-vertex unicyclic graph are determined. All the corresponding extremal graphs are identified, respectively.
The energy of a graph $G$, denoted by $E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of $G$. Let $n$ be an even number and $\mathbb{U}_{n}$ be the set of all conjugated unicyclic graphs of order $n$ with maximum degree at most $3$. Let $S_n^{\frac{n}{2}}$ be the radialene graph obtained by attaching a pendant edge to each vertex of the cycle $C_{\frac{n}{2}}$. In [Y. Cao et al., On the minimal energy of unicyclic Hückel molecular graphs possessing Kekulé structures, Discrete Appl. Math. 157 (5) (2009), 913--919], Cao et al. showed that if $n\geq 8$, $S_n^{\frac{n}{2}}\…
For a given simple graph $G$, the energy of $G$, denoted by $E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Let $P_n^{\ell}$ be the unicyclic graph obtained by connecting a vertex of $C_\ell$ with a leaf of $P_{n-\ell}$\,. In [G. Caporossi, D. Cvetković, I. Gutman, P. Hansen, Variable neighborhood search for extremal graphs. 2. Finding graphs with extremal energy, {\it J. Chem. Inf. Comput. In this paper we investigate the hypergraphs whose spectral radii attain the maximum among all uniform hypergraphs with given number of edges. In particular we characterize the hypergraph(s) with maximum spectral radius over all unicyclic hypergraphs, linear or power unicyclic hypergraphs with given girth, linear or power bicyclic hypergraphs, respectively.
The minimum skew rank of a simple graph G over the field of real numbers, is the smallest possible rank among all real skew-symmetric matrices whose (i,j)-entry (for i not equal to j) is nonzero whenever {i, j} is an edge in G and is zero otherwise. In this paper we give an algorithm for computing the minimum skew rank of a connected unicyclic graph, and classify all connected acyclic and connected unicyclic graphs G, for which the minimum skew rank of G is equal to the minimum skew rank of P, where P is a diametrical path of G.
Sombor index is a novel topological index, which was introduced by Gutman and defined for a graph $G$ as $SO(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d_{u}^{2}+d_{v}^{2}}$, where $d_{u}=d_{G}(u)$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in graph $G$. Extremal problems on the Sombor index for trees with a given diameter has been considered by Chen et al. [H. Chen, W. Li, J. Wang, Extremal values on the Sombor index of trees, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 87 (2022) 23--49] and Li et al. [S. Li, Z. Wang, M. Zhang, On the extremal Sombor index of trees with a given diameter, Appl. Math. Comput. 416 (2022) 126…
A team of $r$ {\it revolutionaries} and a team of $s$ {\it spies} play a game on a graph $G$. Initially, revolutionaries and then spies take positions at vertices. In each subsequent round, each revolutionary may move to an adjacent vertex or not move, and then each spy has the same option. The revolutionaries want to hold an {\it unguarded meeting}, meaning $m$ revolutionaries at some vertex having no spy at the end of a round. To prevent this forever, trivially at least $\min\{|V(G)|,\FL{r/m}\}$ spies are needed. When $G$ is a tree, this many spies suffices. When $G$ is a unicyclic graph, $\…
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a molecular graph, where $V(G)$ and $E(G)$ are the sets of vertices (atoms) and edges (bonds). A topological index of a molecular graph is a numerical quantity which helps to predict the chemical/physical properties of the molecules. The Wiener, Wiener polarity and the terminal Wiener indices are the distance based topological indices. In this paper, we described a linear time algorithm {\bf(LTA)} that computes the Wiener index for acyclic graphs and extended this algorithm for unicyclic graphs. The same algorithms are modified to compute the terminal Wiener index and th…
Various models to quantify the reliability of a network have been studied where certain components of the graph may fail at random and the probability that the remaining graph is connected is the proxy for reliability. In this work we introduce a strengthening of one of these models by considering the probability that the remaining graph is not just connected but also cop-win. A graph is cop-win if one cop can guarantee capture of a fleeing robber in the well-studied pursuit-evasion game of Cops and Robber. More precisely, for a graph $G$ with nodes that are operational independently with prob…
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraphs without isolated vertices. The first Zagreb index of a digraph $D$ defined as a summation over all arcs, $M_1(D)=\frac{1}{2}\sum\limits_{uv\in A}(d^{+}_{u}+d^{-}_v)$, where $d^{+}_u$(resp. $d^{-}_u$) denotes the out-degree (resp. in-degree) of the vertex $u$. In this paper, we give the maximal values and maximal digraphs of first Zagreb index over the set of all orientations of unicyclic graphs with $n$ vertices and matching number $m$ $(2\leq m\leq \lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor)$.

Let $Γ=(K_{n},H^-)$ be a signed complete graph whose negative edges induce a subgraph $H$. The index of $Γ$ is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. In this paper we study the index of $Γ$ when $H$ is a unicyclic graph. We show that among all signed complete graphs of order $n>5$ whose negative edges induce a unicyclic graph of order $k$ and maximizes the index, the negative edges induce a triangle with all remaining vertices being pendant at the same vertex of the triangle.
The generalized Ramsey number $R(H, K)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that for any graph $G$ with $n$ vertices either $G$ contains $H$ as a subgraph or its complement $\overline{G}$ contains $K$ as a subgraph. Let $T_n$ be a tree with $n$ vertices and $F_m$ be a fan with $2m + 1$ vertices consisting of $m$ triangles sharing a common vertex. We prove a conjecture of Zhang, Broersma and Chen for $m \ge 9$ that $R(T_n, F_m) = 2n - 1$ for all $n \ge m^2 - m + 1$. Zhang, Broersma and Chen showed that $R(S_n, F_m) \ge 2n$ for $n \le m^2 -m$ where $S_n$ is a star on $n$ vertices, implying…
The square of a connected graph $G$ is obtained from $G$ by adding an edge between every pair of vertices at distance $2$. In this paper we give some upper or lower bounds for the spectral radius of the square of connected graphs, trees and unicyclic graphs respectively. We also investigate the spectral radius of the square of unicyclic graphs with given girth or trees with fixed diameter.
In a graph G, the cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that distinguishes every element of V (G)[E(G) is called the mixed metric dimension of G. In this paper we first establish the exact value of the mixed metric dimension of a unicycic graph G which is derived from the structure of G. We further consider graphs G with edge disjoint cycles in which a unicyclic restriction Gi is introduced for each cycle Ci: Applying the result for unicyclic graph to each Gi then yields the exact value of the mixed metric dimension of such a graph G. The obtained formulas for the exact value of …
In a graph G, cardinality of the smallest ordered set of vertices that distinguishes every element of V (G) is the (vertex) metric dimension of G. Similarly, the cardinality of such a set is the edge metric dimension of G, if it distinguishes E(G). In this paper these invariants are considered first for unicyclic graphs, and it is shown that the vertex and edge metric dimensions obtain values from two particular consecutive integers, which can be determined from the structure of the graph. In particular, as a consequence, we obtain that these two invariants can differ for at most one for a sam…
The edge Szeged index of a graph $G$ is defined as $Sz_{e}(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}m_{u}(uv|G)m_{v}(uv|G)$, where $m_{u}(uv|G)$ (resp., $m_{v}(uv|G)$) is the number of edges whose distance to vertex $u$ (resp., $v$) is smaller than the distance to vertex $v$ (resp., $u$), respectively. In this paper, we characterize the graph with minimum edge Szeged index among all the unicyclic graphs with given order and diameter.
