Over all graphs (or unicyclic graphs) of a given order, we characterise those graphs that minimise or maximise the number of connected induced subgraphs. For each of these classes, we find that the graphs that minimise the number of connected induced subgraphs coincide with those that are known to maximise the Wiener index (the sum of the distances between all unordered pairs of vertices), and vice versa. For every $k$, we also determine the connected graphs that are extremal with respect to the number of $k$-vertex connected induced subgraphs. We show that, in contrast to the minimum which is uniquely realised by the path, the maximum value is attained by a rich class of connected graphs.
Let $\G$ be an oriented graph of order $n$ and $\a_1,\a_2,..., \a_n$ denote all the eigenvalues of the skew-adjacency matrix of $\G.$ The skew energy $\displaystyle{\cal E}_s(\G)= \sum_{i=1}^{n} |\a_i|.$ In this paper, the oriented unicyclic graphs with minimal and maximal skew energy are determined.
Cut vertices are often used as a measure of nodes' importance within a network. They are those nodes whose failure disconnects a graph. Let N(G) be the number of connected induced subgraphs of a graph $G$. In this work, we investigate the maximum of N(G) where $G$ is a unicyclic graph with $n$ nodes of which $c$ are cut vertices. For all valid $n,c$, we give a full description of those maximal (that maximise N(.)) unicyclic graphs. It is found that there are generally two maximal unicyclic graphs. For infinitely many values of $n,c$, however, there is a unique maximal unicyclic graph with $n$ …
In the study of topological indices two negative correlations are well known: that between the number of subtrees and the Wiener index (sum of distances), and that between the Merrifield-Simmons index (number of independent vertex subsets) and the Hosoya index (number of independent edge subsets). That is, among a certain class of graphs, the extremal graphs that maximize one index usually minimize the other, and vice versa. In this paper, we first study the numbers of subtrees in unicyclic graphs and unicyclic graphs with a given girth, further confirming its opposite behavior to the Wiener i…
In this paper we define cycle-star graph CSk,n-k to be a graph on n vertices consisting of the cycle of length k and n-k leafs appended to the same vertex of the cycle. Also, we define cycle-path graph CPk,n-k to be a graph on n vertices consisting of the cycle of length k and of path on n-k vertices whose one end is linked to a vertex on a cycle. We establish that cycle-star graph CS3,n-3 is the only maximal graph with respect to additively weighted Harary index among all unicyclic graphs on n vertices, while cycle-path graph CP3,n-3 is the only minimal unicyclic graph (here n must be at leas…
Sombor index is a novel topological index, which was introduced by Gutman and defined for a graph $G$ as $SO(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)}\sqrt{d_{u}^{2}+d_{v}^{2}}$, where $d_{u}=d_{G}(u)$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in graph $G$. Extremal problems on the Sombor index for trees with a given diameter has been considered by Chen et al. [H. Chen, W. Li, J. Wang, Extremal values on the Sombor index of trees, MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem. 87 (2022) 23--49] and Li et al. [S. Li, Z. Wang, M. Zhang, On the extremal Sombor index of trees with a given diameter, Appl. Math. Comput. 416 (2022) 126…
In this article, we determine the maximum Wiener indices of unicyclic graphs with given number of vertices and matching number. We also characterize the extremal graphs. This solves an open problem of Du and Zhou.
We obtain the maximum sum-connectivity indices of graphs in the set of trees and in the set of unicyclic graphs respectively with given number of vertices and maximum degree, and determine the corresponding extremal graphs. Additionally, we deduce the n-vertex unicyclic graphs with the first two maximum sum-connectivity indices for $n\ge 4$.
In this paper, we investigate how the Wiener index of unicyclic graphs varies with graph operations. These results are used to present a sharp lower bound for the Wiener index of unicyclic graphs of order $n$ with girth and the matching number $β\ge \frac{3g}{2}$. Moreover, we characterize all extremal graphs which attain the lower bound.
The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for a large family of generalizations of the Wiener Index and to characterize the set of extremal graphs with respect to them. Our main results provide upper and lower bounds for these topological indices on unicyclic graphs.
The general Sombor index of $G$ is defined as $SO_α(G)= \sum_{uv\in G}\left(d^2_{G}(u)+d^2_{G}(v)\right)^α$. For $0<α<1$, we have the upper bound of $SO_α(G)$ on unicyclic graphs with a fixed diameter, and the extremal graph is also characterized.
The aim of this paper is to obtain new inequalities for a large family of topological indices restricted to unicyclic graphs and to characterize the set of extremal unicyclic graphs with respect to them. This family includes variable first Zagreb, variable sum exdeg, multiplicative second Zagreb and Narumi-Katayama indices. Our main results provide upper and lower bounds for these topological indices on unicyclic graphs, fixing or not the maximum degree or the number of pendant vertices.
The Kirchhoff index of a connected graph is the sum of resistance distances between all unordered pairs of vertices in the graph. It found considerable applications in a variety of fields. In this paper, we determine the minimum Kirchhoff index among the unicyclic graphs with fixed number of vertices and matching number, and characterize the extremal graphs.
The Kirchhoff index of a connected graph is the sum of resistance distances between all unordered pairs of vertices in the graph. Its considerable applications are found in a variety of fields. In this paper, we determine the maximum value of Kirchhoff index among the unicyclic graphs with fixed number of vertices and maximum degree, and characterize the corresponding extremal graph.
For a given simple graph $G$, the energy of $G$, denoted by $E(G)$, is defined as the sum of the absolute values of all eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. Let $P_n^{\ell}$ be the unicyclic graph obtained by connecting a vertex of $C_\ell$ with a leaf of $P_{n-\ell}$\,. In [G. Caporossi, D. Cvetković, I. Gutman, P. Hansen, Variable neighborhood search for extremal graphs. 2. Finding graphs with extremal energy, {\it J. Chem. Inf. Comput. Sci.} {\bf 39}(1999) 984--996], Caporossi et al. conjectured that the unicyclic graph with maximal energy is $C_n$ if $n\leq 7$ and $n=9,10,11,13,15$\,, and …
The Hosoya index $Z (G)$ of a graph $G$ is defined as the total number of edge independent sets of $G$. In this paper, we extend the research of [J. Ou, On extremal unicyclic molecular graphs with maximal Hosoya index, \textit{Discrete Appl. Math.} 157 (2009) 391--397.] and [Y. Ye, X. Pan, H. Liu, Ordering unicyclic graphs with respect to Hosoya indices and Merrifield-Simmons indices, \textit{MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem.} 59 (2008) 191--202.] and order the largest $n-1$ unicyclic graphs with respect to the Hosoya index.
The \emph{Wiener index} is a widely studied topological index of graphs. One of the main problems in the area is to determine which graphs of given properties attain the extremal values of Wiener index. In this paper we resolve an open problem posed by Du in 2012. To this end we determine the unicyclic bipartite graphs with given size of parts having the maximum Wiener index. This completes the previous research in which the minimum case was solved.
The reciprocal degree resistance distance index of a connected graph $G$ is defined as $RDR(G)=\sum\limits_{\{u,v\}\subseteq V(G)}\frac {d_G(u)+d_G(v)}{r_G(u,v)}$, where $r_G(u,v)$ is the resistance distance between vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. Let $\mathscr {U}_n$ denote the set of unicyclic graphs with $n$ vertices. We study the graph with maximum reciprocal degree resistance distance index among all graphs in $\mathscr {U}_n$, and characterize the corresponding extremal graph.
The metric (resp. edge metric) dimension of a simple connected graph $G$, denoted by dim$(G)$ (resp. edim$(G)$), is the cardinality of a smallest vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ for which every two distinct vertices (resp. edges) in $G$ have distinct distances to a vertex of $S$. It is an interesting topic to discuss the relation between dim$(G)$ and edim$(G)$ for some class of graphs $G$. In this paper, we settle two open problems on this topic for a widely studied class of graphs, called unicyclic graphs. Specifically, we introduce four classes of subgraphs to characterize the structure of a…
Let $G$ be an unicyclic graph of order $n$ and let $Q_G(x)= det(xI-Q(G))={matrix} \sum_{i=1}^n (-1)^i φ_i x^{n-i}{matrix}$ be the characteristic polynomial of the signless Laplacian matrix of a graph $G$. We give some transformations of $G$ which decrease all signless Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$. $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$ denotes all n-vertex unicyclic graphs with matching number $m$. We characterize the graphs which minimize all the signless Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$ with odd (resp. even) girth. Moreover, we find the extremal graphs which have mini…
The resolvent energy of a graph $G$ of order $n$ is defined as $ER=\sum_{i=1}^n (n-λ_i)^{-1}$, where $λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n$ are the eigenvalues of $G$. In a recent work [Gutman et al., {\it MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem.\/} {\bf 75} (2016) 279--290] the structure of the graphs extremal w.r.t. $ER$ were conjectured, based on an extensive computer--aided search. We now confirm the validity of some of these conjectures.
The generalized Ramsey number $R(H, K)$ is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that for any graph $G$ with $n$ vertices either $G$ contains $H$ as a subgraph or its complement $\overline{G}$ contains $K$ as a subgraph. Let $T_n$ be a tree with $n$ vertices and $F_m$ be a fan with $2m + 1$ vertices consisting of $m$ triangles sharing a common vertex. We prove a conjecture of Zhang, Broersma and Chen for $m \ge 9$ that $R(T_n, F_m) = 2n - 1$ for all $n \ge m^2 - m + 1$. Zhang, Broersma and Chen showed that $R(S_n, F_m) \ge 2n$ for $n \le m^2 -m$ where $S_n$ is a star on $n$ vertices, implying…
The general sum-connectivity index of a graph $G$ is defined as $χ_α(G)=\sum\limits_{uv\in E(G)} {(d(u)+d(v))^α}$, where $d(v)$ denotes the degree of the vertex $v$ in $G$ and $α$ is a real number. In this paper it is deduced the maximum value for the general sum-connectivity index of $n$-vertex trees for $-1.7036\leq α<0$ and of $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs for $-1\le α<0$ respectively, with fixed maximum degree $\triangle $. The corresponding extremal graphs, as well as the $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the second maximum general sum-connectivity index for $n\ge 4$ are characterized. This …
Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and let $\mathcal{L}(G,λ)=\sum_{k=0}^n (-1)^{k}c_{k}(G)λ^{n-k}$ be the characteristic polynomial of its Laplacian matrix. Motivated by Ilić and Ilić's conjecture [A. Ilić, M. Ilić, Laplacian coefficients of trees with given number of leaves or vertices of degree two, Linear Algebra and its Applications 431(2009)2195-2202.] on all extremal graphs which minimize all the Laplacian coefficients in the set $\mathcal{U}_{n,l}$ of all $n$-vertex unicyclic graphs with the number of leaves $l$, we investigate properties of the minimal elements in the partial set $(\mathc…
Motivated in part by an observation that the zero forcing number for the complement of a tree on $n$ vertices is either $n-3$ or $n-1$ in one exceptional case, we consider the zero forcing number for the complement of more general graphs under some conditions, particularly those that do not contain complete bipartite subgraphs. We also move well beyond trees and completely study all of the possible zero forcing numbers for the complements of unicyclic graphs and cactus graphs.
In a connected graph G, the distance between two vertices of G is the length of a shortest path between these vertices. The eccentricity of a vertex u in G is the largest distance between u and any other vertex of G. The total-eccentricity index τ(G) is the sum of eccentricities of all vertices of G. In this paper, we find extremal trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs with respect to total-eccentricity index. Moreover, we find extremal conjugated trees with respect to total-eccentricity index.
For a graph $G,$ we denote the number of connected subgraphs of $G$ by $F(G)$. For a tree $T$, $F(T)$ has been studied extensively and it has been observed that $F(T)$ has a reverse correlation with Wiener index of $T$. Based on that, we call $F(G),$ the core index of $G$. In this paper, we characterize the graphs which extremize the core index among all graphs on $n$ vertices with $k\geq 0$ connected components. We extend our study of core index to unicyclic graphs and connected graphs with fixed number of pendant vertices. We obtained the unicyclic graphs which extremize the core index over …
A close relation between hitting times of the simple random walk on a graph, the Kirchhoff index, resistance-centrality, and related invariants of unicyclic graphs is displayed. Combining with the graph transformations and some other techniques, sharp upper and lower bounds on the cover cost (resp. reverse cover cost) of a vertex in an $n$-vertex unicyclic graph are determined. All the corresponding extremal graphs are identified, respectively.
This paper surveys some recent results and progress on the extremal prob- lems in a given set consisting of all simple connected graphs with the same graphic degree sequence. In particular, we study and characterize the extremal graphs having the maximum (or minimum) values of graph invariants such as (Laplacian, p-Laplacian, signless Laplacian) spectral radius, the first Dirichlet eigenvalue, the Wiener index, the Harary index, the number of subtrees and the chromatic number etc, in given sets with the same tree, unicyclic, graphic degree sequences. Moreover, some conjectures are included.
The Turán type extremal problem asks to maximize the number of edges over all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. Similarly, the spectral Turán type extremal problem asks to maximize spectral radius of all graphs which do not contain fixed subgraphs. In this paper, we determine the maximum spectral radius of all graphs without containing a linear forest as a subgraph and characterize all corresponding extremal graphs. In addition, the maximum number of edges and spectral radius of all bipartite graphs without containing $k\cdot P_3$ as a subgraph are obtained and all extremal graphs a…
For each natural number $n$ we determine, both asymptotically and exactly, the maximum number of edges an induced subgraph of order $n$ of the $d$-dimension a grid graph ${\ints}^d$ can have. The asymptotic bound is obtained by using a theorem Bollobás and Thomason, and the exact bound is obtained by induction. This generalizes some earlier results for the case $d=2$ on one hand, and for $n\leq 2^d$ on the other.
Various models to quantify the reliability of a network have been studied where certain components of the graph may fail at random and the probability that the remaining graph is connected is the proxy for reliability. In this work we introduce a strengthening of one of these models by considering the probability that the remaining graph is not just connected but also cop-win. A graph is cop-win if one cop can guarantee capture of a fleeing robber in the well-studied pursuit-evasion game of Cops and Robber. More precisely, for a graph $G$ with nodes that are operational independently with prob…
Given graphs $G$ and $H$, the generalized Turán number ${\rm ex}(G,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $H$-free subgraph of $G$. In this paper, we obtain an asymptotic upper bound on ${\rm ex}(CT_n,C_{2l})$ for any $n \ge 3$ and $l\geq2$, where $C_{2l}$ is the cycle of length $2l$ and $CT_n$ is the complete transposition graph which is defined as the Cayley graph on the symmetric group ${\rm S}_n$ with respect to the set of all transpositions of ${\rm S}_n$.
In this note, we show that for any $m \in \{1,2, \dots , q +1 \}$, if $G$ is a polarity graph of a projective plane of order $q$ that has an oval, then $G$ contains a subgraph on $m + \binom{m}{2}$ vertices with $m^2+\frac{m^4}{8q} - O ( \frac{m^4}{q^{3/2} } +m )$ edges. As an application, we give the best known lower bounds on the Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n, C_4)$ for certain values of $n$. In particular, we disprove a conjecture of Abreu, Balbuena, and Labbate concerning $\mathrm{ex}(q^2-q-2, C_4)$ where $q$ is a power of $2$.
For a symmetric bivariable function $f(x,y)$, let the {\it connectivity function} of a connected graph $G$ be $M_f(G)=\sum_{uv\in E(G)}f(d(u),d(v))$, where $d(u)$ is the degree of vertex $u$. In this paper, we prove that for an escalating (de-escalating) function $f(x,y)$, there exists a BFS-graph with the maximum (minimum) connectivity function $M_f(G)$ among all graphs with a $c-$cyclic degree sequence $π=(d_1,d_2, \ldots, d_n)$ and $d_n=1$, and obtain the majorization theorem for connectivity function for unicyclic and bicyclic degree sequences. Moreover, some applications of graph invarian…
Let $ex(Q_n, H)$ be the largest number of edges in a subgraph $G$ of a hypercube $Q_n$ such that there is no subgraph of $G$ isomorphic to $H$. We show that for any integer $k\geq 3$, $$ex(Q_n, C_{4k+2})= O(n^{\frac{5}{6} + \frac{1}{3(2k-2)}} 2^n).$$
The hypercube Q_n is the graph whose vertex set is {0,1}^n and where two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. For any subgraph H of the cube, let ex(Q_n, H) be the maximum number of edges in a subgraph of Q_n which does not contain a copy of H. We find a wide class of subgraphs H, including all previously known examples, for which ex(Q_n, H) = o(e(Q_n)). In particular, our method gives a unified approach to proving that ex(Q_n, C_{2t}) = o(e(Q_n)) for all t >= 4 other than 5.
In a graph G; a vertex (resp. an edge) metric generator is a set of vertices S such that any pair of vertices (resp. edges) from G is distinguished by at least one vertex from S: The cardinality of a smallest vertex (resp. edge) metric generator is the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of G: In [19] we determined the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension of unicyclic graphs and that it takes its value from two consecutive integers. Therein, several cycle configurations were introduced and the vertex (resp. edge) metric dimension takes the greater of the two consecutive values only if any of …
We say that $k$ graphs $G_1,G_2,\dots,G_k$ on a common vertex set of size $n$ contain a rainbow copy of a graph $H$ if their union contains a copy of $H$ with each edge belonging to a distinct $G_i$. We provide a counterexample to a conjecture of Frankl on the maximum product of the sizes of the edge sets of three graphs avoiding a rainbow triangle. We propose an alternative conjecture, which we prove under the additional assumption that the union of the three graphs is complete. Furthermore, we determine the maximum product of the sizes of the edge sets of three graphs or four graphs avoiding…
The Kneser graph ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$ is a graph whose vertex set is the family of all $k$-subsets of $[n]$ and two vertices are adjacent if their corresponding subsets are disjoint. The classical Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem determines the cardinality and structure of a maximum induced $K_2$-free subgraph in ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$. As a generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, Erdős proposed a conjecture about the maximum order of an induced $K_{s+1}$-free subgraph of ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$. As the best known result concerning this conjecture, Frankl [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2013], when $n\ge…
A classical extremal, or Turán-type problem asks to determine ${\rm ex}(G, H)$, the largest number of edges in a subgraph of a graph $G$ which does not contain a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. Alon and Shikhelman introduced the so-called generalized extremal number ${\rm ex}(G,T,H)$, defined to be the maximum number of subgraphs isomorphic to $T$ in a subgraph of $G$ that contains no subgraphs isomorphic to $H$. In this paper we investigate the case when $G = Q_n$, the hypercube of dimension $n$, and $T$ and $H$ are smaller hypercubes or cycles.
In this expository paper, we present a motivated construction of large graphs not containing a given complete bipartite subgraph. The key insight is that the algebraic constructions yield very non-smooth probability distributions.
