The classic extremal problem is that of computing the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free graph. In the case where $F=K_{r+1}$, the extremal number was determined by Turán. Later results, known as supersaturation theorems, proved that in a graph containing more edges than the extremal number, there must also be many copies of $K_{r+1}$. Alon and Shikhelman introduced a broader class of problems asking for the maximum number of copies of a graph $T$ in an $F$-free graph. In this paper, we determine some of these generalized extremal numbers and prove supersaturation results for them.
In this paper we introduce a unifying approach to the generalized Turán problem and supersaturation results in graph theory. The supersaturation-extremal function $satex(n, F : m, G)$ is the least number of copies of a subgraph $G$ an $n$-vertex graph can have, which contains at least $m$ copies of $F$ as a subgraph. We present a survey, discuss previously known results and obtain several new ones focusing mainly on proof methods, extremal structure and phase transition phenomena. Finally we point out some relation with extremal questions concerning hypergraphs, particularly Berge-type results…
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a collection of $r$-uniform hypergraphs, and let $0 < p < 1$. It is known that there exists $c = c(p,\mathcal{F})$ such that the probability of a random $r$-graph in $G(n,p)$ not containing an induced subgraph from $\mathcal{F}$ is $2^{(-c+o(1)){n \choose r}}$. Let each graph in $\mathcal{F}$ have at least $t$ vertices. We show that in fact for every $ε> 0$, there exists $δ= δ(ε, p,\mathcal{F}) > 0$ such that the probability of a random $r$-graph in $G(n,p)$ containing less than $δn^t$ induced subgraphs each lying in $\mathcal{F}$ is at most $2^{(-c+ε){n \choose r}}$. This…
We consider 'supersaturation' problems in partially ordered sets (posets) of the following form. Given a finite poset $P$ and an integer $m$ greater than the cardinality of the largest antichain in $P$, what is the minimum number of comparable pairs in a subset of $P$ of cardinality $m$? We provide a framework for obtaining lower bounds on this quantity based on counting comparable pairs relative to a random chain and apply this framework to obtain supersaturation results for three classical posets: the boolean lattice, the collection of subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ ordered by set inclusion a…
We consider a natural generalisation of Turán's forbidden subgraph problem and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem by studying the maximum number $ex_F(n,G)$ of edge-disjoint copies of a fixed graph $F$ can be placed on an $n$-vertex ground set without forming a subgraph $G$ whose edges are from different $F$-copies. We determine the pairs $\{F, G\}$ for which the order of magnitude of $ex_F(n,G)$ is quadratic and prove several asymptotic results using various tools from the regularity lemma and supersaturation to graph packing results.
In the area of forbidden subposet problems we look for the largest possible size $La(n,P)$ of a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ that does not contain a forbidden inclusion pattern described by $P$. The main conjecture of the area states that for any finite poset $P$ there exists an integer $e(P)$ such that $La(n,P)=(e(P)+o(1))\binom{n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$. In this paper, we formulate three strengthenings of this conjecture and prove them for some specific classes of posets. (The parameters $x(P)$ and $d(P)$ are defined in the paper.) $\bullet$ For any finite connected poset $P$ and $\va…

We prove a theorem on how to count induced subgraphs in neighborhoods of graphs. Then we use it to prove a subgraph counting identity conjectured by McKay and Radziszowski in there work on Ramsey theory.

Answering a question of Kolaitis and Kopparty, we show that, for given integer $q>1$ and pairwise nonisomorphic connected graphs $G_1...G_k$, if $p=p(n) $ is such that $\Pr(G_{n,p}\supseteq G_i)\to 1$ $\forall i$, then, with $ξ_i$ the number of copies of $G_i$ in $G_{n,p}$, $(ξ_1...ξ_k)$ is asymptotically uniformly distributed on ${\bf Z}_q^k$.
Random intersection graphs are characterized by three parameters: $n$, $m$ and $p$, where $n$ is the number of vertices, $m$ is the number of objects, and $p$ is the probability that a given object is associated with a given vertex. Two vertices in a random intersection graph are adjacent if and only if they have an associated object in common. When $m=\lfloor n^α\rfloor$ for constant $α$, we provide a condition, called {\em strictly $α$-balanced}, for the Poisson convergence of the number of induced copies of a fixed subgraph.
Recently, Huang gave a very elegant proof of the Sensitivity Conjecture by proving that hypercube graphs have the following property: every induced subgraph on a set of more than half its vertices has maximum degree at least $\sqrt{d}$, where $d$ is the valency of the hypercube. This was generalised by Alon and Zheng who proved that every Cayley graph on an elementary abelian $2$-group has the same property. Very recently, Potechin and Tsang proved an analogous results for Cayley graphs on abelian groups. They also conjectured that all Cayley graphs have the analogous property. We disprove thi…
We prove that for every $n$, there is a graph $G$ with $χ(G) \geq n$ and $ω(G) \leq 3$ such that every induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ with $ω(H) \leq 2$ satisfies $χ(H) \leq 4$. This disproves a well-known conjecture. Our construction is a digraph with bounded clique number, large dichromatic number, and no induced directed cycles of odd length at least 5.
The goal of this short paper to advertise the method of gauge transformations (aka holographic reduction, reparametrization) that is well-known in statistical physics and computer science, but less known in combinatorics. As an application of it we give a new proof of a theorem of A. Schrijver asserting that the number of Eulerian orientations of a $d$--regular graph on $n$ vertices with even $d$ is at least $\left(\frac{\binom{d}{d/2}}{2^{d/2}}\right)^n$. We also show that a $d$--regular graph with even $d$ has always at least as many Eulerian orientations as $(d/2)$--regular subgraphs.
Let H = (V,E) be a k-uniform hypergraph with a vertex set V and an edge set E. Let V_p be constructed by taking every vertex in V independently with probability p. Let X be the number of edges in E that are contained in V_p. We give a condition that guarantees the concentration of X within a small interval around its mean. The applicability of this result is demonstrated by deriving new sub-Gaussian tails for the number of copies of small complete and complete bipartite graphs in the binomial random graph, extending results of Ruciński and Vu.
We prove two estimates for the expectation of the exponential of a complex function of a random permutation or subset. Using this theory, we find asymptotic expressions for the expected number of copies and induced copies of a given graph in a uniformly random graph with degree sequence $(d_1,\ldots,d_n)$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. We also determine the expected number of spanning trees in this model. The range of degrees covered includes $d_j = λn + O(n^{1/2+\varepsilon})$ for some $λ$ bounded away from $0$ and $1$.
We give a simple proof of a generalization of an inequality for homomorphism counts by Sidorenko (1994). A special case of our inequality says that if $d_v$ denotes the degree of a vertex $v$ in a graph $G$ and $\textrm{Hom}_Δ(H, G)$ denotes the number of homomorphisms from a connected graph $H$ on $h$ vertices to $G$ which map a particular vertex of $H$ to a vertex $v$ in $G$ with $d_v \ge Δ$, then $ \textrm{Hom}_Δ(H,G) \le \sum_{v\in G} d_v^{h-1}\mathbf{1}_{d_v\ge Δ} $ We use this inequality to study the minimum sample size needed to estimate the number of copies of $H$ in $G$ by sampling ve…
We study some properties of graphs (or, rather, graph sequences) defined by demanding that the number of subgraphs of a given type, with vertices in subsets of given sizes, approximatively equals the number expected in a random graph. It has been shown by several authors that several such conditions are quasi-random, but that there are exceptions. In order to understand this better, we investigate some new properties of this type. We show that these properties too are quasi-random, at least in some cases; however, there are also cases that are left as open problems, and we discuss why the proo…
Let C be a finite connected graph for which there is a countable universal C-free graph, and whose tree of blocks is a path. Then the blocks of C are complete. This generalizes a result of Furedi and Komjath, and fits naturally into a set of conjectures regarding the existence of countable C-free graphs, with C an arbitrary finite connected graph.
Counting dominating sets in a graph $G$ is closely related to the neighborhood complex of $G$. We exploit this relation to prove that the number of dominating sets $d(G)$ of a graph is determined by the number of complete bipartite subgraphs of its complement. More precisely, we state the following. Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ such that its complement has exactly $a(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p,2q}$ and exactly $b(G)$ subgraphs isomorphic to $K_{2p+1,2q+1}$. Then $d(G) = 2^n -1 + 2[a(G)-b(G)]$. We also show some new relations between the domination polynomial and the neighborh…

The main contribution of this article is an asymptotic expression for the rate associated with moderate deviations of subgraph counts in the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,m)$. Our approach is based on applying Freedman's inequalities for the probability of deviations of martingales to a martingale representation of subgraph count deviations. In addition, we prove that subgraph count deviations of different subgraphs are all linked, via the deviations of two specific graphs, the path of length two and the triangle. We also deduce new bounds for the related $G(n,p)$ model.
Gallai asked in 1984 if any $k$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $n$ distinct $(k-1)$-critical subgraphs. The answer is trivial for $k\leq 3$. Improving a result of Stiebitz, Abbott and Zhou proved in 1995 that for all $k\geq 4$, such graph contains $Ω(n^{1/(k-1)})$ distinct $(k-1)$-critical subgraphs. Since then no progress had been made until very recently, Hare resolved the case $k=4$ by showing that any $4$-critical graph on $n$ vertices contains at least $(8n-29)/3$ odd cycles. In this paper, we mainly focus on 4-critical graphs and develop some novel tools for counting cy…
We construct an infinite family of counterexamples to Thomassen's conjecture that the vertices of every 3-connected, cubic graph on at least 8 vertices can be colored blue and red such that the blue subgraph has maximum degree at most 1 and the red subgraph minimum degree at least 1 and contains no path on 4 vertices.
If ${\cal F}$ is a set of subgraphs $F$ of a finite graph $E$ we define a graph-counting polynomial $$ p_{\cal F}(z)=\sum_{F\in{\cal F}}z^{|F|} $$ In the present note we consider oriented graphs and discuss some cases where ${\cal F}$ consists of unbranched subgraphs $E$. We find several situations where something can be said about the location of the zeros of $p_{\cal F}$.
In this paper, we present a minimal counterexample to a conjecture of Perles that answers a question of Haase and Ziegler. The example is a simple 4-polytope that has an induced 3-connected 3-regular subgraph, whose graph complement is connected. This subgraph is planar and not the graph of a facet of the polytope.
We prove that $\{\overline{K_3}, H\}$-free graphs are not counterexamples to Hadwiger's Conjecture, where $H$ is any one of 33 graphs on seven, eight, or nine vertices, or $H=K_8$. This improves on past results of Plummer-Stiebitz-Toft, Kriesell, and Bosse. The proofs are mostly computer-assisted.
Fix a graph $H$ and some $p\in (0,1)$, and let $X_H$ be the number of copies of $H$ in a random graph $G(n,p)$. Random variables of this form have been intensively studied since the foundational work of Erdős and Rényi. There has been a great deal of progress over the years on the large-scale behaviour of $X_H$, but the more challenging problem of understanding the small-ball probabilities has remained poorly understood until now. More precisely, how likely can it be that $X_H$ falls in some small interval or is equal to some particular value? In this paper we prove the almost-optimal result t…

The abstract induced subgraph poset of a graph is the isomorphism class of the induced subgraph poset of the graph, suitably weighted by subgraph counting numbers. The abstract bond lattice and the abstract edge-subgraph poset are defined similarly by considering the lattice of subgraphs induced by connected partitions and the poset of edge-subgraphs, respectively. Continuing our development of graph reconstruction theory on these structures, we show that if a graph has no isolated vertices, then its abstract bond lattice and the abstract induced subgraph poset can be constructed from the abst…
For a fixed graph $H$ and for arbitrarily large host graphs $G$, the number of homomorphisms from $H$ to $G$ and the number of subgraphs isomorphic to $H$ contained in $G$ have been extensively studied in extremal graph theory and graph limits theory when the host graphs are allowed to be dense. This paper addresses the case when the host graphs are robustly sparse and proves a general theorem that solves a number of open questions proposed since 1990s and strengthens a number of results in the literature. We prove that for any graph $H$ and any set ${\mathcal H}$ of homomorphisms from $H$ to …
We introduce a class of parameterised counting problems on graphs, p-#Induced Subgraph With Property(Φ), which generalises a number of problems which have previously been studied. This paper focusses on the case in which Φdefines a family of graphs whose edge-minimal elements all have bounded treewidth; this includes the special case in which Φdescribes the property of being connected. We show that exactly counting the number of connected induced k-vertex subgraphs in an n-vertex graph is #W[1]-hard, but on the other hand there exists an FPTRAS for the problem; more generally, we show that the…
Fix graphs $F$ and $H$ and let $ex(n,H,F)$ denote the maximum possible number of copies of the graph $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. The systematic study of this function was initiated by Alon and Shikhelman [{\it J. Comb. Theory, B}. {\bf 121} (2016)]. In this paper, we give new general bounds concerning this generalized Turán function. We also determine $ex(n,P_k,K_{2,t})$ (where $P_k$ is a path on $k$ vertices) and $ex(n,C_k,K_{2,t})$ asymptotically for every $k$ and $t$. For example, it is shown that for $t \geq 2$ and $k\geq 5$ we have $ex(n,C_k,K_{2,t})=\left(\frac{1}{2k}+o(1)\right…
What is the probability that a sparse $n$-vertex random $d$-regular graph $G_n^d$, $n^{1-c}<d=o(n)$ contains many more copies of a fixed graph $K$ than expected? We determine the behavior of this upper tail to within a logarithmic gap in the exponent. For most graphs $K$ (for instance, for any $K$ of average degree greater than $4$) we determine the upper tail up to a $1+o(1)$ factor in the exponent. However, we also provide an example of a graph, given by adding an edge to $K_{2,4}$, where the upper tail probability behaves differently from previously studied behavior in both the sparse rando…
Parameterised subgraph counting problems are the most thoroughly studied topic in the theory of parameterised counting, and there has been significant recent progress in this area. Many of the existing tractability results for parameterised problems which involve finding or counting subgraphs with particular properties rely on bounding the treewidth of these subgraphs in some sense; here, we prove a number of hardness results for the situation in which this bounded treewidth condition does not hold, resulting in dichotomies for some special cases of the general subgraph counting problem. The p…
The combinatorial structure of a d-dimensional simple convex polytope can be reconstructed from its abstract graph [Blind & Mani 1987, Kalai 1988]. However, no polynomial/efficient algorithm is known for this task, although a polynomially checkable certificate for the correct reconstruction was found by [Joswig, Kaibel & Koerner 2000]. A much stronger certificate would be given by the following characterization of the facet subgraphs, conjectured by M. Perles: ``The facet subgraphs of the graph of a simple d-polytope are exactly all the (d-1)-regular, connected, induced, non-separating subgrap…
Bollobás and Gyárfás conjectured that for any $k, n \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ with $n > 4(k-1)$, every 2-edge-coloring of the complete graph on $n$ vertices leads to a $k$-connected monochromatic subgraph with at least $n-2k+2$ vertices. We find a counterexample with $n = \lfloor 5k-2.5-\sqrt{8k-\frac{31}{4}} \rfloor$, thus disproving the conjecture, and we show the conclusion holds for $n > 5k-2.5-\sqrt{8k-\frac{31}{4}}$ when $k \ge 16$.
