The main contribution of this article is an asymptotic expression for the rate associated with moderate deviations of subgraph counts in the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,m)$. Our approach is based on applying Freedman's inequalities for the probability of deviations of martingales to a martingale representation of subgraph count deviations. In addition, we prove that subgraph count deviations of different subgraphs are all linked, via the deviations of two specific graphs, the path of length two and the triangle. We also deduce new bounds for the related $G(n,p)$ model.
Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp observed the following fact for every fixed integer $k\geq 2$: Every graph on $n\geq k-1$ vertices with at least $(k-1)(n-k+2)+{k-2\choose 2}$ edges contains a subgraph with minimum degree at least $k$. However, there are examples in which the whole graph is the only such subgraph. Erdős et al. conjectured that having just one more edge implies the existence of a subgraph on at most $(1-\varepsilon_k)n$ vertices with minimum degree at least $k$, where $\varepsilon_k>0$ depends only on $k$. We prove this conjecture, using and extending ideas of Mousset, Noeve…
In this paper we completely resolve the well-known problem of Erdős and Sauer from 1975 which asks for the maximum number of edges an $n$-vertex graph can have without containing a $k$-regular subgraph, for some fixed integer $k\geq 3$. We prove that any $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $C_k\log \log n$ contains a $k$-regular subgraph. This matches the lower bound of Pyber, Rödl and Szemerédi and substantially improves an old result of Pyber, who showed that average degree at least $C_k\log n$ is enough. Our method can also be used to settle asymptotically a problem raised by Erdő…
In dense Erdős-Rényi random graphs, we are interested in the events where large numbers of a given subgraph occur. The mean behavior of subgraph counts is known, and only recently were the related large deviations results discovered. Consequently, it is natural to ask, can one develop efficient numerical schemes to estimate the probability of an Erdős-Rényi graph containing an excessively large number of a fixed given subgraph? Using the large deviation principle we study an importance sampling scheme as a method to numerically compute the small probabilities of large triangle counts occurring…
Given a graph $Γ= (V, E)$ on $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, we define the Erdős-Rényi graph process with host $Γ$ as follows. A permutation $e_1,\dots,e_m$ of $E$ is chosen uniformly at random, and for $t\leq m$ we let $Γ_t = (V, \{e_1,\dots,e_t\})$. Suppose the minimum degree of $Γ$ is $δ(Γ) \geq (1/2 + \varepsilon)n$ for some constant $\varepsilon > 0$. Then with high probability, $Γ_t$ becomes Hamiltonian at the same moment that its minimum degree becomes at least two. Given $0\leq p\leq 1$ we let $Γ_p$ be the Erdős-Rényi subgraph of $Γ$, obtained by retaining each edge independently with prob…
For any fixed simple graph $H=(V,E)$ and any fixed $u>0$, we establish the leading order of the exponential rate function for the probability that the number of copies of $H$ in the Erdős--Rényi graph $G(n,p)$ exceeds its expectation by a factor $1+u$, assuming $n^{-κ(H)}\ll p\ll1$, with $κ(H) = 1/(2Δ)$, where $Δ\ge 1$ is the maximum degree of $H$. This improves on a previous result of Chatterjee and the second author, who obtained $κ(H)=c/(Δ|E|)$ for a constant $c>0$. Moreover, for the case of cycle counts we can take $κ$ as large as $1/2$. We additionally obtain the sharp upper tail for Scha…
An edge-coloring of a complete graph with a set of colors $C$ is called completely balanced if any vertex is incident to the same number of edges of each color from $C$. Erdős and Tuza asked in $1993$ whether for any graph $F$ on $\ell$ edges and any completely balanced coloring of any sufficiently large complete graph using $\ell$ colors contains a rainbow copy of $F$. This question was restated by Erdős in his list of ``Some of my favourite problems on cycles and colourings''. We answer this question in the negative for most cliques $F=K_q$ by giving explicit constructions of respective comp…
We show that the contact process on the rank-one inhomogeneous random graphs and Erdos-R{é}nyi graphs with mean degree large enough survives a time exponential in the size of these graphs for any positive infection rate. In addition, a metastable result for the extinction time is also proved.
For a $Δ$-regular connected graph ${\sf H}$ the problem of determining the upper tail large deviation for the number of copies of ${\sf H}$ in $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$, an Erdős-Rényi graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$, has generated significant interests. For $p\ll 1$ and $np^{Δ/2} \gg (\log n)^{1/(v_{\sf H}-2)}$, where $v_{\sf H}$ is the number of vertices in ${\sf H}$, the upper tail large deviation event is believed to occur due to the presence of localized structures. In this regime the large deviation event that the number of copies of ${\sf H}$ in $\mathbb{G}(n,p)$ exceeds its exp…
The Erdős-Sós Conjecture states that every graph with average degree more than $k-2$ contains all trees of order $k$ as subgraphs. In this paper, we consider a variation of the above conjecture: studying the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(k,l)$-bipartite trees for given integers $n\ge m$ and $k\ge l$. In particular, we determine that the maximum size of an $(n,m)$-bipartite graph which does not contain all $(n,m)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs (or all $(k,2)$-bipartite trees as subgraphs, respectively). Furthermore, all these extremal graphs are characte…
The Kneser graph ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$ is a graph whose vertex set is the family of all $k$-subsets of $[n]$ and two vertices are adjacent if their corresponding subsets are disjoint. The classical Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem determines the cardinality and structure of a maximum induced $K_2$-free subgraph in ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$. As a generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, Erdős proposed a conjecture about the maximum order of an induced $K_{s+1}$-free subgraph of ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$. As the best known result concerning this conjecture, Frankl [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2013], when $n\ge…
A chordal graph is a graph with no induced cycles of length at least $4$. Let $f(n,m)$ be the maximal integer such that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges has a chordal subgraph with at least $f(n,m)$ edges. In 1985 Erdős and Laskar posed the problem of estimating $f(n,m)$. In the late '80s, Erdős, Gyárfás, Ordman and Zalcstein determined the value of $f(n,n^2/4+1)$ and made a conjecture on the value of $f(n,n^2/3+1)$. In this paper we prove this conjecture and answer the question of Erdős and Laskar, determining $f(n,m)$ asymptotically for all $m$ and exactly for $m \leq n^2/3+1$.
An old conjecture of Erdős and McKay states that if all homogeneous sets in an $n$-vertex graph are of order $O(\log n)$ then the graph contains induced subgraphs of each size from $\{0,1,\ldots, Ω(n^2)\}$. We prove a bipartite analogue of the conjecture: if all balanced homogeneous sets in an $n \times n$ bipartite graph are of order $O(\log n)$ then the graph contains induced subgraphs of each size from $\{0,1,\ldots, Ω(n^2)\}$.
An old problem of Erdős, Fajtlowicz and Staton asks for the order of a largest induced regular subgraph that can be found in every graph on n vertices. Motivated by this problem, we consider the order of such a subgraph in a typical graph on n vertices, i.e., in a binomial random graph G(n,1/2). We prove that with high probability a largest induced regular subgraph of G(n,1/2) has about n^{2/3} vertices.
Two subgraphs $A,B$ of a graph $G$ are anticomplete if they are vertex-disjoint and there are no edges joining them. Is it true that if $G$ is a graph with bounded clique number, and sufficiently large chromatic number, then it has two anticomplete subgraphs, both with large chromatic number? This is a question raised by El-Zahar and Erdős in 1986, and remains open. If so, then at least there should be two anticomplete subgraphs both with large minimum degree, and that is one of our results. We prove two variants of this. First, a strengthening: we can ask for one of the two subgraphs to have …
This paper examines the structure of the largest subgraphs of the Erdős-Rényi random graph, $G_{n,p}$, with a given matching number. This extends a result of Erdős and Gallai who, in 1959, gave a classification of the structures of the largest subgraphs of $K_n$ with a given matching number. We show that their result extends to $G_{n,p}$ with high probability when $p\ge \frac{8 \ln n}{n}$ or $p \ll \frac{1}{n}$, but that it does not extend (again with high probability) when $\frac{4\ln(2e)}{n} < p< \frac{\ln n}{3n}$.
Given integers $m$ and $f$, let $S_n(m,f)$ consist of all integers $e$ such that every $n$-vertex graph with $e$ edges contains an $m$-vertex induced subgraph with $f$ edges, and let $σ(m,f)=\limsup_{n\rightarrow\infty} |S_n(m,f)|/\binom{n}{2}$. As a natural extension of an extremal problem of Erdős, this was investigated by Erdős, Füredi, Rothschild and Sós twenty years ago. Their main result indicates that integers in $S_n(m,f)$ are rare for most pairs $(m,f)$, though they also found infinitely many pairs $(m,f)$ whose $σ(m,f)$ is a fixed positive constant. Here we aim to provide some improv…
The Erdos-Hajnal conjecture says that for every graph H there exists c>0 such that every graph G not containing H as an induced subgraph has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c. We prove that this is true when H is a cycle of length five. We also prove several further results: for instance, that if C is a cycle and H is the complement of a forest, there exists c>0 such that every graph G containing neither of C,H as an induced subgraph has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least |G|^c.
The problem of finding dense induced bipartite subgraphs in $H$-free graphs has a long history, and was posed 30 years ago by Erdős, Faudree, Pach and Spencer. In this paper, we obtain several results in this direction. First we prove that any $K_t$-free graph with minimum degree at least $d$ contains an induced bipartite subgraph of minimum degree at least $c_t \log d/\log \log d$, confirming (asymptotically) several conjectures by Esperet, Kang and Thomassé. Complementing this result, we further obtain optimal bounds for this problem in the case of dense triangle-free graphs, and we also ans…
A famous conjecture of Erdős and Sós states that every graph with average degree more than $k - 1$ contains all trees with $k$ edges as subgraphs. We prove that the Erdős-Sós conjecture holds approximately, if the size of the embedded tree is linear in the size of the graph, and the maximum degree of the tree is sublinear.
A graph on $n$ vertices is said to be \emph{$C$-Ramsey} if every clique or independent set of the graph has size at most $C \log n$. The only known constructions of Ramsey graphs are probabilistic in nature, and it is generally believed that such graphs possess many of the same properties as dense random graphs. Here, we demonstrate one such property: for any fixed $C>0$, every $C$-Ramsey graph on $n$ vertices induces subgraphs of at least $n^{2-o(1)}$ distinct sizes. This near-optimal result is closely related to two unresolved conjectures, the first due to Erdős and McKay and the second due …
We determine how large r-partite graphs can be found in r-uniform graphs with n vertices and Cn^r edges, where C is a slowly decreasing function of n. This refines results of Erdos from 1964.
Starting with the large deviation principle (LDP) for the Erdős-Rényi binomial random graph $\mathcal{G}(n,p)$ (edge indicators are i.i.d.), due to Chatterjee and Varadhan (2011), we derive the LDP for the uniform random graph $\mathcal{G}(n,m)$ (the uniform distribution over graphs with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges), at suitable $m=m_n$. Applying the latter LDP we find that tail decays for subgraph counts in $\mathcal{G}(n,m_n)$ are controlled by variational problems, which up to a constant shift, coincide with those studied by Kenyon et al. and Radin et al. in the context of constrained random…
The Erdös-Hajnal conjecture states that for every graph $H$, there exists a constant $δ(H) > 0$ such that every graph $G$ with no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$ has either a clique or a stable set of size at least $|V(G)|^{δ(H)}$. This paper is a survey of some of the known results on this conjecture.
Determining the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $C_4$-free graph is a well-studied problem that dates back to a paper of Erdős from 1938. One of the most important families of $C_4$-free graphs are the Erdős-Rényi orthogonal polarity graphs. We show that the Cayley sum graph constructed using a Bose-Chowla Sidon set is isomorphic to a large induced subgraph of the Erdős-Rényi orthogonal polarity graph. Using this isomorphism we prove that the Petersen graph is a subgraph of every sufficiently large Erdős-Rényi orthogonal polarity graph.
The Erdős-Szekeres Theorem stated in terms of graphs says that any red-blue coloring of the edges of the ordered complete graph $K_{rs+1}$ contains a red copy of the monotone increasing path with $r$ edges or a blue copy of the monotone increasing path with $s$ edges. Although $rs + 1$ is the minimum number of vertices needed for this result, not all edges of $K_{rs+1}$ are necessary. We characterize the subgraphs of $K_{rs+1}$ with this coloring property as follows: they are exactly the subgraphs that contain all the edges of a graph we call the circus tent graph $CT(r,s)$. Additionally, we u…
A decomposition of a simple graph $G$ is a pair $(G,P)$ where $P$ is a set of subgraphs of $G$, which partitions the edges of $G$ in the sense that every edge of $G$ belongs to exactly one subgraph in $P$. If the elements of $P$ are induced subgraphs then the decomposition is denoted by $[G,P]$. A $k$-$P$-coloring of a decomposition $(G,P)$ is a surjective function that assigns to the edges of $G$ a color from a $k$-set of colors, such that all edges of $H\in P$ have the same color, and, if $H_1,H_2\in P$ with $V(H_1)\cap V(H_2)\neq\emptyset$ then $E(H_1)$ and $E(H_2)$ have different colors. T…
We consider classes of pseudo-random graphs on $n$ vertices for which the degree of every vertex and the co-degree between every pair of vertices are in the intervals $(np - Cn^δ,np+Cn^δ)$ and $(np^2- C n^δ, np^2 +C n^δ)$ respectively, for some absolute constant $C$, and $p, δ\in (0,1)$. We show that for such pseudo-random graphs the number of induced isomorphic copies of subgraphs of size $s$ are approximately same as that of an Erdős-Réyni random graph with edge connectivity probability $p$ as long as $s \le (((1-δ)\wedge \frac{1}{2})-o(1))\log n/\log (1/p)$, when $p \in (0,1/2]$. When $p \i…
In their celebrated paper [Ramsey-Type Theorems, Discrete Appl. Math. 25 (1989) 37-52], Erdős and Hajnal asked the following: is it true, that for any finite graph H there exists a constant c(H) such that for any finite graph G, if G does not contain complete or empty induced subgraphs of size at least |V(G)|^c(H), then H can be isomorphically embedded into G ? The positive answer has become known as the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture. In Theorem 3.20 of the present paper we settle this conjecture in the affirmative. To do so, we are studying here the fine structure of ultraproducts of finite sets, s…
For the Erdős-Rényi random graph G(n,p), we give a precise asymptotic formula for the size of a largest vertex subset in G(n,p) that induces a subgraph with average degree at most t, provided that p = p(n) is not too small and t = t(n) is not too large. In the case of fixed t and p, we find that this value is asymptotically almost surely concentrated on at most two explicitly given points. This generalises a result on the independence number of random graphs. For both the upper and lower bounds, we rely on large deviations inequalities for the binomial distribution.
In this note, extending some results of Erdos, Frankl, Rodl, Alexeev, Bollobas and Thomason we determine asymptotically the number of graphs which do not contain certain large subgraphs. In particular, if H_1,...,H_n,... are graphs with chromatic numbers r_1,...,r_n,... and order o(log n), we dermine asymptotically the number of graphs of order n not containing H_n as a subgraph. We also give similar results for induced subgraphs.
We prove that for all $r\geq2$ and c>0, every graph of order n with at least cn^{r} cliques of order r contains a complete r-partite graph with each part of size $\lfloor c^{r}\log n \rfloor.$ This result implies a concise form of the Erdős-Stone theorem.
Recently, variants of many classical extremal theorems have been proved in the random environment. We, complementing existing results, extend the Erdős-Gallai Theorem in random graphs. In particular, we determine, up to a constant factor, the maximum number of edges in a $P_n$-free subgraph of $G(N,p)$, practically for all values of $N,n$ and $p$. Our work is also motivated by the recent progress on the size-Ramsey number of paths.
We consider the $t$-improper chromatic number of the Erd{\H o}s-R{é}nyi random graph $G(n,p)$. The t-improper chromatic number $χ^t(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest number of colours needed in a colouring of the vertices in which each colour class induces a subgraph of maximum degree at most $t$. If $t = 0$, then this is the usual notion of proper colouring. When the edge probability $p$ is constant, we provide a detailed description of the asymptotic behaviour of $χ^t(G(n,p))$ over the range of choices for the growth of $t = t(n)$.
A graph is $P_8$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to the path $P_8$ on eight vertices. In 1995, Erdős and Gyárfás conjectured that every graph of minimum degree at least three contains a cycle whose length is a power of two. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture for $P_8$-free graphs by showing that there exists a cycle of length four or eight in every $P_8$-free graph with minimum degree at least three.
In this paper we show that there exists a constant $C>0$ such that for any graph $G$ on $Ck\ln k$ vertices either $G$ or its complement $\bar{G}$ has an induced subgraph on $k$ vertices with minimum degree at least $\frac12(k-1)$. This affirmatively answers a question of Erdős and Pach from 1983.
The upper tail problem in a random graph asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of some fixed subgraph in an Erdős--Rényi random graph exceeds its expectation by some constant factor. There has been much exciting recent progress on this problem. We study the corresponding problem for hypergraphs, for which less is known about the large deviation rate. We present new phenomena in upper tail large deviations for sparse random hypergraphs that are not seen in random graphs. We conjecture a formula for the large deviation rate, i.e., the first order asymptotics of the log-proba…
Affirming a conjecture of Erdős and Renyi we prove that for any (real number) c_1>0 for some c_2>0, if a graph G has no c_1(log n) nodes on which the graph is complete or edgeless (i.e. G exemplifies |G| not-> (c_1 log n)^2_2) then G has at least 2^{c_2n} non-isomorphic (induced) subgraphs.
We study graphs on $n$ vertices which have $2n-2$ edges and no proper induced subgraphs of minimum degree $3$. Erdős, Faudree, Gyárfás, and Schelp conjectured that such graphs always have cycles of lengths $3,4,5,\dots, C(n)$ for some function $C(n)$ tending to infinity. We disprove this conjecture, resolve a related problem about leaf-to-leaf path lengths in trees, and characterize graphs with $n$ vertices and $2n-2$ edges, containing no proper subgraph of minimum degree $3$.
Polynomial algorithms are given for the following two problems: given a graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges, where $m \ge 3 n^{3/2}$, find a complete balanced bipartite subgraph with parts about $\ln n/(\ln (n^2/m))$, given a graph with $n$ vertices, find a decomposition of its edges into complete balanced bipartite graphs having altogether $O(n^2 / \ln n)$ vertices. Previous proofs of the existence of such objects, due to Kővári-Sós-Turán, Chung-Erdős-Spencer, Bublitz and Tuza were non-constructive.
A well-known result by Haxell and Kohayakawa states that the vertices of an $r$-coloured complete graph can be partitioned into $r$ monochromatic connected subgraphs of distinct colours; this is a slightly weaker variant of a conjecture by Erdős, Pyber and Gyárfás that states that there exists a partition into $r-1$ monochromatic connected subgraphs. We consider a variant of this problem, where the complete graph is replaced by a graph with large minimum degree, and prove two conjectures of Bal and DeBiasio, for two and three colours.
We investigate the following generalisation of the 'multiplication table problem' of Erdős: given a bipartite graph with $m$ edges, how large is the set of sizes of its induced subgraphs? Erdős's problem of estimating the number of distinct products $ab$ with $a,b \le n$ is precisely the problem under consideration when the graph in question is the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$. In this note, we prove that the set of sizes of the induced subgraphs of any bipartite graph with $m$ edges contains $Ω(m/(\log m)^{12})$ distinct elements.
We give characterizations of the structure and degree sequences of hereditary unigraphs, those graphs for which every induced subgraph is the unique realization of its degree sequence. The class of hereditary unigraphs properly contains the threshold and matrogenic graphs, and the characterizations presented here naturally generalize those known for these other classes of graphs. The degree sequence characterization of hereditary unigraphs makes use of the list of values $k$ for which the $k$th Erdős--Gallai inequality holds with equality for a graphic sequence. Using the canonical decompositi…
