Various models to quantify the reliability of a network have been studied where certain components of the graph may fail at random and the probability that the remaining graph is connected is the proxy for reliability. In this work we introduce a strengthening of one of these models by considering the probability that the remaining graph is not just connected but also cop-win. A graph is cop-win if one cop can guarantee capture of a fleeing robber in the well-studied pursuit-evasion game of Cops and Robber. More precisely, for a graph $G$ with nodes that are operational independently with probability $p$ and edges that are operational if and only if both of their endpoints are operational, the node cop-win reliability of $G$, denoted $\text{NCRel}(G,p)$, is the probability that the operational nodes induce a cop-win subgraph of $G$. It is then of interest to find graphs $G$ with $n$ nodes and $m$ edges such that $\text{NCRel}(G,p)\ge\text{NCRel}(H,p)$ for all $p\in[0,1]$ and all graphs $H$ with $n$ nodes and $m$ edges. Such a graph is called uniformly most reliable. We show that uniformly most reliable graphs exist for unicyclic and bicyclic graphs, respectively. This is in contrast to the fact that there are no known sparse graphs maximizing the corresponding notion of node reliability.
A connected $k$-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges is called $r$-cyclic if $n=m(k-1)-r+1$. For $r=1$ or $2$, the hypergraph is simply called unicyclic or bicyclic. In this paper we investigate hypergraphs that attain larger spectral radii among all simple connected $k$-uniform unicyclic and bicyclic hypergraphs. Specifically, by using some edge operations, the formula on power hypergraph eigenvalues, the weighted incidence matrix and a result on linear unicyclic hypergraphs, we determined the first five hypergraphs with larger spectral radius among all unicyclic hypergraphs and…
In this paper, we give a characterization of unicyclic graphs with diameter at most 4 which are A-vertex magic. Moreover, let G be a bicyclic graph of diameter 3, then G is group vertex magic if and only if G = M11(0, 0).
The $α$-spectral radius of a connected graph $G$ is the spectral radius of $A_α$-matrix of $G$. In this paper, we discuss the methods for comparing $α$-spectral radius of graphs. As applications, we characterize the graphs with the maximal $α$-spectral radius among all unicyclic and bicyclic graphs of order $n$ with diameter $d$, respectively. Finally, we determine the unique graph with maximal signless Laplacian spectral radius among bicyclic graphs of order $n$ with diameter $d$.
Gutman and Wagner proposed the concept of matching energy (ME) and pointed out that the chemical applications of ME go back to the 1970s. Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $n$ and $μ_1,μ_2,\ldots,μ_n$ be the roots of its matching polynomial. The matching energy of $G$ is defined to be the sum of the absolute values of $μ_{i}\ (i=1,2,\ldots,n)$. In this paper, we characterize the graphs with minimal matching energy among all unicyclic and bicyclic graphs with a given diameter $d$.
The resolvent energy of a graph $G$ of order $n$ is defined as $ER=\sum_{i=1}^n (n-λ_i)^{-1}$, where $λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n$ are the eigenvalues of $G$. In a recent work [Gutman et al., {\it MATCH Commun. Math. Comput. Chem.\/} {\bf 75} (2016) 279--290] the structure of the graphs extremal w.r.t. $ER$ were conjectured, based on an extensive computer--aided search. We now confirm the validity of some of these conjectures.
The zeroth-order general Randić index $R^{0}_{a}$ of a digraph $D$ is the sum of $(d^{+}_{v})^{a}+(d^{-}_{w})^{a}$ over all arcs $vw$ of $D$, where $a$, $d^{+}_{v}$ and $d^{-}_{w}$ are an arbitrary real number, the out-degree of the vertex $v$ and the in-degree of the vertex $w$, respectively. We determine maximum zeroth-order general Randić index of oriented trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs in terms of matching number and order in this paper.
Two cycles are referred as disjoint if they have no common edges. In this paper, we will investigate the determinant of the distance matrix of a graph, giving a formula for the determinant of the distance matrix of a bicyclic graph whose two cycles are disjoint, which extends the formula for the determinant of the distance matrix of a tree, as well as that of a unicyclic graph.
Let $G$ be a connected graph on $n$ vertices and $D(G)$ its distance matrix. The formula for computing the determinant of this matrix in terms of the number of vertices is known when the graph is either a tree or {a} unicyclic graph. In this work we generalize these results, obtaining the determinant of the distance matrix for {all graphs} in a {class, including trees, unicyclic and bicyclic graphs. This class actually includes graphs with many cycles, provided that each block of the graph is at most bicyclic.}
If $G$ is a graph, its Laplacian is the difference between diagonal matrix of its vertex degrees and its adjacency matrix. A one-edge connection of two graphs $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$ is a graph $G=G_{1}\odot G_{2}$ with $V(G)=V(G_{1})\cup V(G_{2})$ and $E(G)= E(G_{1})\cup E(G_{2})\cup \{e=uv\}$ where $u\in V(G_1)$ and $v\in V(G_2)$. In this paper, we consider the eigenvector of unicycle graphs. We study the relationship between the Laplacian eigenvalue $2$ of unicyclic graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$; and bicyclic graphs $G=G_{1}\odot G_{2}$. We also characterize the broken sun graphs and the one edge conn…
In this paper we investigate the hypergraphs whose spectral radii attain the maximum among all uniform hypergraphs with given number of edges. In particular we characterize the hypergraph(s) with maximum spectral radius over all unicyclic hypergraphs, linear or power unicyclic hypergraphs with given girth, linear or power bicyclic hypergraphs, respectively.
A $\mathbb{T}$-gain graph is a triple $Φ=(G,\mathbb{T},φ)$ consisting of a graph $G=(V,E)$, the circle group $\mathbb{T}=\{z\in C: |z|=1\}$ and a gain function $φ:\overrightarrow{E}\rightarrow \mathbb{T}$ such that $φ(e_{ij})=φ(e_{ji})^{-1}=\overline{φ(e_{ji})}$. The rank of $\mathbb{T}$-gain graph $Φ$, denoted by $r(Φ)$, is the rank of the adjacency matrix of $Φ$. In 2015, Yu, Qu and Tu [ G. H. Yu, H. Qu, J. H. Tu, Inertia of complex unit gain graphs, Appl. Math. Comput. 265(2015) 619--629 ] obtained some properties of inertia of a $\mathbb{T}$-gain graph. They characterized the $\mathbb{T}$-…
An oriented graph $G^σ$ is a digraph without loops and multiple arcs, where $G$ is called the underlying graph of $G^σ$. Let $S(G^σ)$ denote the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^σ$. The rank of the skew-adjacency matrix of $G^σ$ is called the {\it skew-rank} of $G^σ$, denoted by $sr(G^σ)$. The skew-adjacency matrix of an oriented graph is skew symmetric and the skew-rank is even. In this paper we consider the skew-rank of simple oriented graphs. Firstly we give some preliminary results about the skew-rank. Secondly we characterize the oriented graphs with skew-rank 2 and characterize the oriented g…
The Laplacian matrix of a graph $G$ is denoted by $L(G)=D(G)-A(G)$, where $D(G)=diag(d(v_{1}),\ldots , d(v_{n}))$ is a diagonal matrix and $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two graphs. A one-edge connection of two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ is a graph $G=G_1\odot_{uv} G_2$ with $V(G)=V(G_1)\cup V(G_2)$ and $E(G)= E(G_1)\cup E(G_2)\cup \{e=uv\}$, where $u\in V(G_1)$ and $v\in V(G_2)$. We investigate the multiplicity of the Laplacian eigenvalue $2$ of $G_1\odot_{uv} G_2$, while the unicyclic graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ have $2$ among their Laplacian eigenvalues, by using their…
Given a graph $G$ and a positive integer $k$, define the \emph{Gallai-Ramsey number} to be the minimum number of vertices $n$ such that any $k$-edge coloring of $K_n$ contains either a rainbow (all different colored) triangle or a monochromatic copy of $G$. In this paper, we consider two classes of unicyclic graphs, the star with an extra edge and the path with a triangle at one end. We provide the $2$-color Ramsey numbers for these two classes of graphs and use these to obtain general upper and lower bounds on the Gallai-Ramsey numbers.
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices and $e(G)$ edges, and $q_1(G)\geq q_2(G)\geq\cdots\geq q_n(G)\geq0$ be the signless Laplacian eigenvalues of $G.$ Let $S_k^+(G)=\sum_{i=1}^{k}q_i(G),$ where $k=1, 2, \ldots, n.$ F. Ashraf et al. conjectured that $S_k^+(G)\leq e(G)+\binom{k+1}{2}$ for $k=1, 2, \ldots, n.$ In this paper, we give various upper bounds for $S_k^+(G),$ and prove that this conjecture is true for the following cases: connected graph with sufficiently large $k,$ unicyclic graphs and bicyclic graphs for all $k,$ and tricyclic graphs when $k\neq 3.$
Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a hypergraph with $n$ vertices. Suppose that $d_1,d_2,\ldots,d_n$ are degrees of the vertices of $\mathcal{H}$. The $t$-th graph entropy based on degrees of $\mathcal{H}$ is defined as $$ I_d^t(\mathcal{H}) =-\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left(\frac{d_i^{t}}{\sum_{j=1}^{n}d_j^{t}}\log\frac{d_i^{t}}{\sum_{j=1}^{n}d_j^{t}}\right) =\log\left(\sum_{i=1}^{n}d_i^{t}\right)-\sum_{i=1}^{n}\left(\frac{d_i^{t}}{\sum_{j=1}^{n}d_j^{t}}\log d_i^{t}\right), $$ where $t$ is a real number and the logarithm is taken to the base two. In this paper we obtain upper and lower bounds of $I_d^t(\mathcal{H})$ f…
We consider the cop-throttling number of a graph $G$ for the game of Cops and Robbers, which is defined to be the minimum of $(k + \text{capt}_k(G))$, where $k$ is the number of cops and $\text{capt}_k(G)$ is the minimum number of rounds needed for $k$ cops to capture the robber on $G$ over all possible games. We provide some tools for bounding the cop-throttling number, including showing that the positive semidefinite (PSD) throttling number, a variant of zero forcing throttling, is an upper bound for the cop-throttling number. We also characterize graphs having low cop-throttling number and …
Limiting distributions are derived for the sparse connected components that are present when a random graph on $n$ vertices has approximately $\half n$ edges. In particular, we show that such a graph consists entirely of trees, unicyclic components, and bicyclic components with probability approaching $\sqrt{2\over 3} \cosh\sqrt{5\over 18}\approx0.9325$ as $n\to\infty$. The limiting probability that it consists of trees, unicyclic components, and at most one other component is approximately 0.9957; the limiting probability that it is planar lies between 0.987 and 0.9998. When a random graph ev…
Given a set $ξ=\{H_1,H_2,...\}$ of connected non acyclic graphs, a $ξ$-free graph is one which does not contain any member of $% ξ$ as copy. Define the excess of a graph as the difference between its number of edges and its number of vertices. Let ${\gr{W}}_{k,ξ}$ be theexponential generating function (EGF for brief) of connected $ξ$-free graphs of excess equal to $k$ ($k \geq 1$). For each fixed $ξ$, a fundamental differential recurrence satisfied by the EGFs ${\gr{W}}_{k,ξ}$ is derived. We give methods on how to solve this nonlinear recurrence for the first few values of $k$ by means of grap…
