Given a foliation, there is a well-known notion of holonomy, which can be understood as an action that differentiates to the Bott connection on the normal bundle. We present an analogous notion for Lie subalgebroids, consisting of an effective action of the minimal integration of the Lie subalgebroid, and provide an explicit description in terms of conjugation by bisections. The construction is done in such a way that it easily extends to singular subalgebroids, which provide our main motivation.
We introduce singular subalgebroids of an integrable Lie algebroid, extending the notion of Lie subalgebroid by dropping the constant rank requirement. We lay the bases of a Lie theory for singular subalgebroids: we construct the associated holonomy groupoids, adapting the procedure of Androulidakis-Skandalis for singular foliations, in a way that keeps track of the choice of Lie groupoid integrating the ambient Lie algebroid. The holonomy groupoids are topological groupoids, and are suitable for noncommutative geometry as they allow for the construction of the associated convolution algebras.…
Let G be a Lie groupoid with Lie algebroid g. It is known that, unlike in the case of Lie groups, not every subalgebroid of g can be integrated by a subgroupoid of G. In this paper we study conditions on the invariant foliation defined by a given subalgebroid under which such an integration is possible. We also consider the problem of integrability by closed subgroupoids, and we give conditions under which the closure of a subgroupoid is again a subgroupoid.
The $L_\infty$-algebra is an algebraic structure suitable for describing deformation problems. In this paper we construct one $L_\infty$-algebra, which turns out to be a differential graded Lie algebra, to control the deformations of Lie algebroids and a second one to control the deformations of Lie subalgebroids. We also combine these two $L_\infty$-algebras into one to control the simultaneous deformations of a Lie algebroid and its Lie subalgebroids. The results generalize the deformation theory of Lie algebra and Lie subalgebras. Applications of our results include deformations of foliatio…
We describe the reduction procedure for a symplectic Lie algebroid by a Lie subalgebroid and a symmetry Lie group. Moreover, given an invariant Hamiltonian function we obtain the corresponding reduced Hamiltonian dynamics. Several examples illustrate the generality of the theory.
This short note gives a geometric interpretation of the Atiyah class of a Lie pair. It proves that it vanishes if the subalgebroid is the kernel of a fibration of Lie algebroids. In other words, the Atiyah class of a Lie pair vanishes if the subalgebroid is the fiber of an ideal system in the Lie algebroid. In order to prove this, a new characterisation of the ideal condition for an infinitesimal ideal system is found.
Our goal in this paper is to make an attempt to find the largest Lie algebra of vector fields on the indicatrix such that all its elements are tangent to the holonomy group of a Finsler manifold. First, we introduce the notion of the curvature algebra, generated by curvature vector fields, then we define the infinitesimal holonomy algebra by the smallest Lie algebra of vector fields on an indicatrix, containing the curvature vector fields and their horizontal covariant derivatives with respect to the Berwald connection. At the end we introduce the notion of the holonomy algebra of a Finsler ma…
We study some properties of coisotropic submanifolds of a manifold with respect to a given multivector field. Using this notion, we generalize the results of Weinstein \cite{wein} from Poisson bivector field to Nambu-Poisson tensor or more generally to any multivector field. We also introduce the notion of Nambu-Lie groupoid generalizing the concepts of both Poisson-Lie groupoid and Nambu-Lie group. We show that the infinitesimal version of Nambu-Lie groupoid is the notion of weak Lie-Filippov bialgebroid as introduced in \cite{bas-bas-das-muk}. Next we introduce coisotropic subgroupoids of a …
In this paper we introduce the notion of tangent space TG of a (not necessary smooth) subgroup G of the diffeomorphism group Diff(M) of a compact manifold M. We prove that TG is a Lie subalgebra of the Lie algebra of smooth vector fields on M. The construction can be generalized to subgroups of any (finite or infinite dimensional) Lie groups. The tangent Lie algebra TG introduced this way is a generalization of the classical Lie algebra in the smooth cases. As a working example, we discuss in detail the tangent structure of the holonomy group and fibered holonomy group of Finsler manifolds.
Our paper is devoted to the study of the holonomy groups of Finsler surfaces using the methods of infinite dimensional Lie theory. The notion of infinitesimal holonomy algebra will be introduced, by the smallest Lie algebra of vector fields on an indicatrix, containing the curvature vector fields and their horizontal covariant derivatives with respect to the Berwald connection. We obtain that the topological closure of the holonomy group contains the exponential image of any tangent Lie algebra of the holonomy group. A class of Randers surfaces is determined, for which the infinitesimal holono…
We classify the holonomy algebras of manifolds admitting an indecomposable torsion free $G_2^*$-structure, i.e. for which the holonomy representation does not leave invariant any proper non-degenerate subspace. We realize some of these Lie algebras as holonomy algebras of left-invariant metrics on Lie groups.
One way of producing explicit Riemannian 6-manifolds with holonomy SU(3) is by integrating a flow of SU(2)-structures on a 5-manifold, called the hypo evolution flow. In this paper we classify invariant hypo SU(2)-structures on nilpotent 5-dimensional Lie groups. We characterize the hypo evolution flow in terms of gauge transformations, and study the flow induced on the variety of frames on a Lie algebra taken up to automorphisms. We classify the orbits of this flow for all hypo nilpotent structures, obtaining several families of cohomogeneity one metrics with holonomy contained in SU(3). We p…
In this article, we give a theorem of reduction of the structure group of a principal bundle P with regular structure group G. Then, when G is in the classes of Lie groups defined by T.Robart [13], we define the closed holonomy group of a connection as the minimal closed Lie subgroup of G for which the previous theorem of reduction can be applied. We also prove an infinite dimensional version of the Ambrose-Singer theorem: the Lie algebra of the holonomy group is spanned by the curvature elements.
We introduce the holonomy of a singular leaf $L$ of a singular foliation as a sequence of group morphisms from $π_n(L)$ to the $π_{n-1}$ of the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of the transverse foliation of $L$. We include these morphisms in a long exact sequence, thus relating them to the holonomy groupoid of Androulidakis and Skandalis and to a similar construction by Brahic and Zhu for Lie algebroids.
We investigate parallel submanifolds of a Riemannian symmetric space $N$. The special case of a symmetric submanifold has been investigated by many authors before and is well understood. We observe that there is an intrinsic property of the second fundamental form which distinguishes full symmetric submanifolds from arbitrary full parallel submanifolds of $N$, usually called "1-fullness of $M$". Furthermore, for every parallel submanifold $M$ of $N$ we consider the pullback bundle $TN|M$ with its induced connection, which admits a distinguished parallel subbundle $osc M$, usually called the "s…
We study the existence of invariant metrics with holonomy $G_{2(2)}^* \subset SO(4,3)$ on compact nilmanifolds, i.e. on compact quotients of nilpotent Lie groups by discrete subgroups. We prove that, up to isomorphism, there exists only one indecomposable nilpotent Lie algebra admitting a torsion-free $G_{2(2)}^*$-structure such that the center is definite with respect to the induced inner product. In particular, we show that the associated compact nilmanifold admits a 3-parameter family of invariant metrics with full holonomy $G_{2(2)}^*$.
Every singular foliation has an associated topological groupoid, called holonomy groupoid (see arXiv:math/0612370). In this note we exhibit some functorial properties of this assignment: if a foliated manifold $(M,\mathcal{F}_M)$ is the quotient of a foliated manifold $(P,\mathcal{F}_P)$ along a surjective submersion with connected fibers, then the same is true for the corresponding holonomy groupoids. For quotients by a Lie group action, an analog statement holds under suitable assumptions, yielding a Lie 2-group action on the holonomy groupoid.
We prove that SU(n) (n > 2) and Sp(n)U(1) (n > 1) are the only connected Lie groups acting transitively and effectively on some sphere which can be weak holonomy groups of a Riemannian manifold without having to contain its holonomy group. In both cases the manifold is Kaehler.
By [arXiv:1604.00528], a list of possible holonomy algebras for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with an indecomposable torsion free ${\rm G}_{2}^*$-structure is known. Here indecomposability means that the standard representation of the algebra on ${\mathbb R}^{4,3}$ does not leave invariant any proper non-degenerate subspace. The dimension of the socle of this representation is called the type of the Lie algebra. It is equal to one, two or three. In the present paper, we use Cartan's theory of exterior differential systems to show that all Lie algebras of Type I from the list in [arXiv:1604.00528…
Fino and Kath determined all possible holonomy groups of seven-dimensional pseu\-do-Rie\-man\-nian manifolds contained in the exceptional, non-compact, simple Lie group $\mathrm{G}_2^*$ via the corresponding Lie algebras. They are distinguished by the dimension of their maximal semi-simple subrepresentation on the tangent space, the socle. An algebra is called of Type I, II or III if the socle has dimension 1, 2 or 3 respectively. This article proves that each possible holonomy group of Type III can indeed be realized by a metric of signature $(4,3)$. For this purpose, metrics are explicitly c…
The notion of local equivalence relation on a topological space is generalised to that of local subgroupoid. The main result is the construction of the holonomy and monodromy groupoids of certain Lie local subgroupoids, and the formulation of a monodromy principle on the extendibility of local Lie morphisms.
Given an almost complex manifold (M, J), we study complex connections with trivial holonomy and such that the corresponding torsion is either of type (2,0) or of type (1,1) with respect to J. Such connections arise naturally when considering Lie groups, and quotients by discrete subgroups, equipped with bi-invariant and abelian complex structures.
The Hitchin flow constructs eight-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (M,g) with holonomy in Spin(7) starting with a cocalibrated G_2-structure on a seven-dimensional manifold. As Sp(2)\subseteq SU(4)\subseteq Spin(7), one may also obtain Calabi-Yau fourfolds or hyperKähler manifolds via the Hitchin flow. In this paper, we show that the Hitchin flow on almost Abelian Lie algebras and on Lie algebras with one-dimensional commutator always yields Riemannian metrics with Hol(g)\subseteq SU(4) but Hol(g)\neq Sp(2). We investigate when we actually get Hol(g)=SU(4) and obtain so many new explicit examp…
Our main aim is to associate a holonomy Lie groupoid to the connective structure of an abelian gerbe. The construction has analogies with a procedure for the holonomy Lie groupoid of a foliation, in using a locally Lie groupoid and a globalisation procedure. We show that path connections and 2-holonomy on line bundles may be formulated using the notion of a connection pair on a double category, due to Brown-Spencer, but now formulated in terms of double groupoids using the thin fundamental groupoids introduced by Caetano-Mackaay-Picken. To obtain a locally Lie groupoid to which globalisation a…
This paper is concerned with the holonomy of a class of spaces which includes Landsberg spaces of Finsler geometry. The methods used are those of Lie groupoids and algebroids as developed by Mackenzie. We prove a version of the Ambrose-Singer Theorem for such spaces. The paper ends with a discussion of how the results may be extended to Finsler spaces and homogeneous nonlinear connections in general.
We extend the notion of connection in order to be able to study singular geometric structures, namely, we consider a notion of connection on a Lie algebroid which is a natural extension of the usual concept of connection. Using connections, we are able to define holonomy of the orbit foliation of a Lie algebroid and prove a stability theorem. We also introduce secondary or exotic characteristic classes that generalize the modular class of a Lie algebroid.
Given a singular foliation, we attach an "essential isotropy" group to each of its leaves, and show that its discreteness is the integrability obstruction of a natural Lie algebroid over the leaf. We show that a condition ensuring discreteness is the local surjectivity of a transversal exponential map associated with the maximal ideal of vector fields prescribed to be tangent to the foliation. The essential isotropy group is also shown to control the smoothness of the holonomy cover of the leaf (the associated fiber of the holonomy groupoid), as well as the {smoothness} of the associated isotr…
(This is a revised version of the paper) - In the present paper we study the geometry of doubly extended Lie groups with their natural biinvariant metric. We describe the curvature, the holonomy and the space of parallel spinors. This is completely done for all simply connected groups with biinvariantmetric of Lorentzian signature $(1,n-1)$, of signature $(2,n-2)$ and of signature $(p,q)$, where $p+q\leq 6$. Furthermore, some special series with higher signature are discussed.
In order to understand the linearization problem around a leaf of a singular foliation, we extend the familiar holonomy map from the case of regular foliations to the case of singular foliations. To this aim we introduce the notion of holonomy transformation. Unlike the regular case, holonomy transformations can not be attached to classes of paths in the foliation, but rather to elements of the holonomy groupoid of the singular foliation. This assignment is injective. Holonomy transformations allow us to link the linearization problem with the compactness of the isotropy group of the holonomy …
We prove a Simons-type holonomy theorem for totally skew 1-forms with values in a Lie algebra of linear isometries. The only transitive case, for this theorem, is the full orthogonal group. We only use geometric methods and we do not use any classification (not even that of transitive isometric actions on the sphere or the list of rank one symmetric spaces). This result was independently proved, by using an algebraic approach, by Paul-Andy Nagy. We apply this theorem to prove that the canonical connection of a compact naturally reductive space is unique, provided the space does not split off, …
Previous work (Pradines, 1966, Aof and Brown, 1992) has given a setting for a holonomy Lie groupoid of a locally Lie groupoid. Here we develop analogous 2-dimensional notions starting from a locally Lie crossed module of groupoids. This involves replacing the Ehresmann notion of a local smooth coadmissible section of a groupoid by a local smooth coadmissible homotopy (or free derivation) for the crossed module case. The development also has to use corresponding notions for certain types of double groupoids. This leads to a holonomy Lie groupoid rather than double groupoid, but one which involv…
If $A$ is a Lie algebroid over a foliated manifold $(M,\mathcal{F})$, a foliation of $A$ is a Lie subalgebroid $B$ with anchor image $T\mathcal{F}$ and such that $A/B$ is locally equivalent with Lie algebroids over the slice manifolds of $\mathcal{F}$. We give several examples and, for foliated Lie algebroids, we discuss the following subjects: the dual Poisson structure and Vaintrob's super-vector field, cohomology and deformations of the foliation, integration to a Lie groupoid. In the last section, we define a corresponding notion of a foliation of a Courant algebroid $A$ as a bracket-close…
Dual affine connections on Riemannian manifolds have played a central role in the field of information geometry since their introduction by Amari. Here I would like to extend the notion of dual connections to general vector bundles with an inner product, in the same way as a unitary connection generalizes a metric affine connection, using Cartan decompositions of Lie algebras. This gives a natural geometric interpretation for the Amari tensor, as a "connection form term" which generates dilations, and which is reversed for the dual connections.
We outline the construction of the holonomy groupoid of a locally Lie groupoid and the monodromy groupoid of a Lie groupoid. These specialise to the well known holonomy and monodromy groupoids of a foliation, when the groupoid is just an equivalence relation.

We present three large classes of examples of conformal structures for which the equations for the Fefferman-Graham ambient metric to be Ricci-flat are linear PDEs, which we solve explicitly. These explicit solutions enable us to discuss the holonomy of the corresponding ambient metrics. Our examples include conformal pp-waves and, more importantly, conformal structures that are defined by generic rank 2 and 3 distributions in respective dimensions 5 and 6. The corresponding explicit Fefferman-Graham ambient metrics provide a large class of metrics with holonomy equal to the exceptional non-co…
We define a notion of connection in a fibre bundle that is compatible with a singular foliation of the base. Fibre bundles equipped with such connections are in plentiful supply, arising naturally for any Lie groupoid-equivariant bundle, and simultaneously generalising regularly foliated bundles in the sense of Kamber-Tondeur and singular foliations. We define hierarchies of diffeological holonomy groupoids associated to such bundles, which arise from the parallel transport of jet/germinal conservation laws. We show that the groupoids associated in this manner to trivial singularly foliated bu…
R. Zimmer proved that, on a compact manifold, a foliation with a dense leaf, a suitable leafwise Riemannian symmetric metric and a transverse Lie structure has arithmetic holonomy group. In this work we improve such result for totally geodesic foliations by showing that the manifold itself is arithmetic. This also gives a positive answer, for some special cases, to a conjecture of E. Ghys.
We give a new construction of the holonomy and fundamental groupoids of a singular foliation. In contrast with the existing construction of Androulidakis and Skandalis, our method proceeds by taking a quotient of an infinite dimensional space of paths. This strategy is a direct extension of the classical construction for regular foliations and mirrors the integration of Lie algebroids via paths (per Crainic and Fernandes). In this way, we obtain a characterization of the holonomy and fundamental groupoids of a singular foliation that more clearly reflects the homotopic character of these invar…
This paper is concerned with (transversally) Kähler foliations. We proved here that the holonomy pseudo-group's lie algebra is semi-simple unde negativity assumptions of the Ricci tensor.
Cocalibrated G_2-structures and cocalibrated G_2^*-structures are the natural initial values for Hitchin's evolution equations whose solutions define (pseudo)-Riemannian manifolds with holonomy group contained in Spin(7) or Spin_0(3,4), respectively. In this article, we classify which seven-dimensional real Lie algebras with a codimension one Abelian ideal admit such structures. Moreover, we classify the seven-dimensional complex Lie algebras with a codimension one Abelian ideal which admit cocalibrated (G_2)_C-structures.
This doctoral thesis has two objectives. The first objective is to introduce a notion of equivalence for singular foliations that preserves their transverse geometry and is compatible with the notions of Morita equivalence of the holonomy groupoids and the transverse equivalence for regular foliations that appeared in the 1980's. The second one is to describe the structures behind quotients of singular foliations and to connect these results with their associated holonomy groupoids. It also wants to give an introduction to the notion of singular foliations as given by Androulidakis and Skandal…
We express Witten's deformation of Morse functions using deformation to the normal cone and $C^*$-modules. This allows us to obtain asymptotics of the `large eigenvalues'. Our methods extend to Morse functions along a foliation. We construct the Witten deformation using any generic function on an arbitrary foliation on a compact manifold and establish the compactness of its resolvent. When the foliation has a holonomy invariant transverse measure we show that our result implies Morse inequalities obtained by Connes and Fack in a slightly more general situation.
It is known that the hard Lefschetz action, together with Kähler identities for Kähler (resp. hyperkähler) manifolds, determines a $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)_{sup}$ (resp. $\mathfrak{sp}(1,1)_{sup}$) Lie superalgebra action on differential forms. In this paper, we explain the geometric origin of this action, and we also generalize it to manifolds with other holonomy groups. For semi-flat Calabi-Yau (resp. hyperkähler) manifolds, these symmetries can be enlarged to a $\mathfrak{so}(2,2)_{sup}$ (resp. $\mathfrak{su}(2,2)_{sup}$) action.
We investigate left-invariant Hitchin and hypo flows on $5$-, $6$- and $7$-dimensional Lie groups. They provide Riemannian cohomogeneity-one manifolds of one dimension higher with holonomy contained in $SU(3)$, $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$, respectively, which are in general geodesically incomplete. Generalizing results of Conti, we prove that for large classes of solvable Lie groups $G$ these manifolds cannot be completed: a complete Riemannian manifold with parallel $SU(3)$-, $G_2$- or $Spin(7)$-structure which is of cohomogeneity one with respect to $G$ is flat, and has no singular orbits. We furthe…
We construct explicit left invariant quaternionic contact structures on Lie groups with zero and non-zero torsion, and with non-vanishing quaternionic contact conformal curvature tensor, thus showing the existence of quaternionic contact manifolds not locally quaternionic contact conformal to the quaternionic sphere. We present a left invariant quaternionic contact structure on a seven dimensional non-nilpotent Lie group, and show that this structure is locally quaternionic contact conformal to the flat quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group. On the product of a se…
We define the thin fundamental categorical group ${\mathcal P}_2(M,*)$ of a based smooth manifold $(M,*)$ as the categorical group whose objects are rank-1 homotopy classes of based loops on $M$, and whose morphisms are rank-2 homotopy classes of homotopies between based loops on $M$. Here two maps are rank-$n$ homotopic, when the rank of the differential of the homotopy between them equals $n$. Let $\C(\Gc)$ be a Lie categorical group coming from a Lie crossed module ${\Gc= (\d\colon E \to G,\tr)}$. We construct categorical holonomies, defined to be smooth morphisms ${\mathcal P}_2(M,*) \to \…
We construct the holonomy groupoid of any singular foliation. In the regular case this groupoid coincides with the usual holonomy groupoid of Winkelnkemper (1983); the same holds in the singular cases of Bigonnet and Pradines (1985) and Debord (2001), which from our point of view can be thought of as being "almost regular". In the general case, the holonomy groupoid can be quite an ill behaved geometric object. On the other hand it often has a nice longitudinal smooth structure. Nonetheless, we use this groupoid to generalize to the singular case Connes' construction of the C*-algebra of the f…
In this paper we study the Lie groupoids which appear in foliation theory. A foliation groupoid is a Lie groupoid which integrates a foliation, or, equivalently, whose anchor map is injective. The first theorem shows that, for a Lie groupoid G, the following are equivalent: - G is a foliation groupoid, - G has discrete isotropy groups, - G is Morita equivalent to an etale groupoid. Moreover, we show that among the Lie groupoids integrating a given foliation, the holonomy and the monodromy groupoids are extreme examples. The second theorem shows that the cyclic homology of convolution algebras …
We establish a new version of the first Noether Theorem, according to which the (equivalence classes of) first integrals of given Euler-Lagrange equations in one independent variable are in exact one-to-one correspondence with the (equivalence classes of) vector fields satisfying two simple geometric conditions, namely they simultaneously preserve the holonomy distribution of the jets space and the action from which the Euler-Lagrange equations are derived.
