We prove that SU(n) (n > 2) and Sp(n)U(1) (n > 1) are the only connected Lie groups acting transitively and effectively on some sphere which can be weak holonomy groups of a Riemannian manifold without having to contain its holonomy group. In both cases the manifold is Kaehler.
Weakly-irreducible not irreducible subalgebras of $\so(1,n+1)$ were classified by L. Berard Bergery and A. Ikemakhen. In the present paper a geometrical proof of this result is given. Transitively acting isometry groups of Lobachevskian spaces and transitively acting similarity transformation groups of Euclidean spaces are classified.
If the holonomy representation of an $(n+2)$--dimensional simply-connected Lorentzian manifold $(M,h)$ admits a degenerate invariant subspace its holonomy group is contained in the parabolic group $(\mathbb{R} \times SO(n))\ltimes \mathbb{R}^n$. The main ingredient of such a holonomy group is the SO(n)--projection $G:=pr_{SO(n)}(Hol_p(M,h))$ and one may ask whether it has to be a Riemannian holonomy group. In this paper we show that this is the case if $G\subset U(n/2)$ or if the irreducible acting components of $G$ are simple.
We study the lightlike foliations that appear on Lorentzian manifolds with weakly irreducible not irreducible holonomy algebra. We give global structure equations for the foliation that generalize the Gauss and Weingarten equations for one lightlike hypersurface. This gives us some global operators on the manifold. Using these operators, we decompose the curvature tensor of the manifold into several components. We give a criteria how to find the type of the holonomy algebras (there are 4 possible types) in terms of the global operators.
The problem of classification of connected holonomy groups (equivalently of holonomy algebras) for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds is open. The classification of Riemannian holonomy algebras is a classical result. The classification of Lorentzian holonomy algebras was obtained recently. In the present paper weakly-irreducible not irreducible subalgebras of $\su(1,n+1)$ ($n\geq 0$) are classified. Weakly-irreducible not irreducible holonomy algebras of pseudo-Kählerian and special pseudo-Kählerian manifolds are classified. An example of metric for each possible holonomy algebra is given. This gives…
The holonomy group of an (n+2)-dimensional simply-connected, indecomposable but non-irreducible Lorentzian manifold (M,h) is contained in the parabolic group $(\mathbb{R} \times SO(n))\ltimes \mathbb{R}^n$. The main ingredient of such a holonomy group is the SO(n)--projection $G:=pr_{SO(n)}(Hol_p(M,h))$ and one may ask whether it has to be a Riemannian holonomy group. In this paper we show that this is always the case, completing our results of the first part math.DG/0305139. We draw consequences for the existence of parallel spinors on Lorentzian manifolds.
This article is a report on the status of the problem of classifying the irriducibly acting subgroups of GL(n,R) that can appear as the holonomy of a torsion-free affine connection. In particular, it contains an account of the completion of the classification of these groups by Chi, Merkulov, and Schwachhofer as well as of the exterior differential systems analysis that shows that all of these groups do, in fact, occur. Some discussion of the results of Joyce on the existence of compact examples with holonomy G_2 or Spin(7) is also included.

Let G be a nontrivial finite subgroup of U(m) acting freely on C^m - 0. Then C^m/G has an isolated quotient singularity at 0. Let X be a resolution of C^m/G, and g a Kahler metric on X. We say that g is Asymptotically Locally Euclidean (ALE) if it is asymptotic in a certain way to the Euclidean metric on C^m/G. In this paper we study Ricci-flat ALE Kahler metrics on X. We show that if G is a subgroup of SU(m) acting freely on C^m - 0, and X is a crepant resolution of C^m/G, then there is a unique Ricci-flat ALE Kahler metric in each Kahler class. This is proved using a version of the Calabi co…
In this paper we examine the structure of Riemannian manifolds with a special kind of Codazzi tensors. We use them to construct globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds with complete Cauchy hypersurfaces for any weakly irreducible holonomy representation with parallel spinors, i.e. with a holonomy group which is a semidirect product between $\R^{n-2}$ and one of $\1, SU(k), Sp(1), G_2$ and $Spin(7)$.
A pp-wave is a Lorentzian manifold with a parallel light-like vector field satisfying a certain curvature condition. We introduce generalisations of pp-waves, on one hand by allowing the vector field to be recurrent and on the other hand by weakening the curvature condition. These generalisations are related to the screen holonomy of the Lorentzian manifold. While pp-waves have a trivial screen holonomy there are no restrictions on the screen holonomy of the manifolds with the weaker curvature condition.
We study supersymmetric AdS$_D$ backgrounds of eleven-dimensional or type II supergravity preserving $\mathcal{N}$ supersymmetries using generalised geometry. We show that a large class correspond precisely to spaces admitting a generalised $G_{D,\mathcal{N}}$ structure with a weak integrability condition, which we call "weak generalised holonomy". This class contains all such backgrounds with odd $D$, but for even $D$ we must impose a technical assumption concerning the inner products of Killing spinors. It is known that all compact smooth solutions are included, though our analysis is purely…
In this note we prove the following three algebraic facts which have applications in the theory of holonomy groups and homogeneous spaces: Any irreducibly acting connected subgroup $G \subset Gl(n,\rr)$ is closed. Moreover, if $G$ admits an invariant bilinear form of Lorentzian signature, $G$ is maximal, i.e. it is conjugated to $SO(1,n-1)_0$. Finally we calculate the vector space of $G$-invariant symmetric bilinear forms, show that it is at most 3-dimensional, and determine the maximal stabilizers for each dimension.
For a conformal manifold we introduce the notion of an ambient connection, an affine connection on an ambient manifold of the conformal manifold, possibly with torsion, and with conditions relating it to the conformal structure. The purpose of this construction is to realise the normal conformal tractor holonomy as affine holonomy of such a connection. We give an example of an ambient connection for which this is the case, and which is torsion free if we start the construction with a C-space, and in addition Ricci-flat if we start with an Einstein manifold. Thus for a $C$-space this example le…
G2-manifolds with a cohomogeneity-one action of a compact Lie group G are studied. For G simple, all solutions with holonomy G2 and weak holonomy G2 are classified. The holonomy G2 solutions are necessarily Ricci-flat and there is a one-parameter family with SU(3)-symmetry. The weak holonomy G2 solutions are Einstein of positive scalar curvature and are uniquely determined by the simple symmetry group. During the proof the equations for G2-symplectic and G2-cosymplectic structures are studied and the topological types of the manifolds admitting such structures are determined. New examples of c…
The holonomy algebra $\g$ of an indecomposable Lorentzian (n+2)-dimensional manifold $M$ is a weakly-irreducible subalgebra of the Lorentzian algebra $\so_{1,n+1}$. L. Berard Bergery and A. Ikemakhen divided weakly-irreducible not irreducible subalgebras into 4 types and associated with each such subalgebra $\g$ a subalgebra $\h\subset \so_n$ of the orthogonal Lie algebra. We give a description of the spaces $\R(\g)$ of the curvature tensors for algebras of each type in terms of the space $¶(\h)$ of $\h$-valued 1-forms on $\Real^n$ that satisfy the Bianchi identity and reduce the classificatio…
We classify all connected subgroups of SO(2,n) that act irreducibly on $\R^{2,n}$. Apart from $SO_0(2,n)$ itself these are $U(1,n/2)$, $SU(1,n/2)$, if $n$ even, $S^1\cdot SO(1,n/2)$ if $n$ even and $n\ge 2$, and $SO_0(1,2)$ for $n=3$. Our proof is based on the Karpelevich Theorem and uses the classification of totally geodesic submanifolds of complex hyperbolic space and of the Lie ball. As an application we obtain a list of possible irreducible holonomy groups of Lorentzian conformal structures, namely $SO_0(2,n)$, SU(1,n), and $SO_0(1,2)$.
We obtain a simple formula for the multiplicity of eigenvalues of the Hodge-Laplace operator, $Δ_f$, acting on sections of the full exterior bundle over an arbitrary compact flat Riemannian n-manifold M with holonomy group Z_2^k, with 0<k<n. This formula implies that any two compact flat manifolds with holonomy group Z_2^k having isospectral lattices of translations are isospectral on forms, that is, with respect to $Δ_f$. As a consequence, we construct a large family of pairwise $Δ_f$-isospectral and nonhomeomorphic n-manifolds of cardinality greater than $2^{(n-1)(n-2)/2}$.
The classification of Riemannian manifolds by the holonomy group of their Levi-Civita connection picks out many interesting classes of structures, several of which are solutions to the Einstein equations. The classification has two parts. The first consists of isolated examples: the Riemannian symmetric spaces. The second consists of geometries that can occur in continuous families: these include the Calabi-Yau structures and Joyce manifolds of string theory. One may ask how one can weaken the definitions and still obtain similar classifications. We present two closely related suggestions. The…
An affine manifold is a manifold with an affine structure, i.e. a torsion-free flat affine connection. We show that the universal cover of a closed affine 3-manifold $M$ with holonomy group of shrinkable dimension (or discompacité in French) less than or equal to two is diffeomorphic to $\bR^3$. Hence, $M$ is irreducible. This follows from two results: (i) a simply connected affine 3-manifold which is 2-convex is diffeomorphic to $\bR^3$, whose proof using the Morse theory takes most of this paper; and (ii) a closed affine manifold of holonomy of shrinkable dimension less or equal to $d$ is $d…
We introduce a new geometric approach to a manifold equipped with a smooth density function that takes a torsion-free affine connection, as opposed to a weighted measure or Laplacian, as the fundamental object of study. The connection motivates new versions of the volume and Laplacian comparison theorems that are valid for the 1-Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor, a weaker assumption than has previously been considered in the literature. As applications we prove new generalizations of Myers' theorem and Cheng's diameter rigidity result. We also investigate the holonomy groups of the weighted connection.…
The aim of the present paper is the investigation of $Spin(9)$-structures on 16-dimensional manifolds from the point of view of topology as well as holonomy theory. First we construct several examples. Then we study the necessary topological conditions resulting from the existence of a $Spin(9)$-reduction of the frame bundle of a 16-dimensional compact manifold (Stiefel-Whitney and Pontrjagin classes). We compute the homotopy groups $π_i (X^{84})$ of the space $X^{84}= SO(16) / Spin(9)$ for $i \le 14$. Next we introduce different geometric types of $Spin(9)$-structures and derive the correspon…
