This article is a report on the status of the problem of classifying the irriducibly acting subgroups of GL(n,R) that can appear as the holonomy of a torsion-free affine connection. In particular, it contains an account of the completion of the classification of these groups by Chi, Merkulov, and Schwachhofer as well as of the exterior differential systems analysis that shows that all of these groups do, in fact, occur. Some discussion of the results of Joyce on the existence of compact examples with holonomy G_2 or Spin(7) is also included.

Classification of connected holonomy groups of pseudo-Kählerian manifolds of index 2

The problem of classification of connected holonomy groups (equivalently of holonomy algebras) for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds is open. Projectively flat Finsler manifolds with infinite dimensional holonomy

Recently, we developed a method for the study of holonomy properties of non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds and obtained that the holonomy group can not be a compact Lie group, if the Finsler manifold of dimension $> 2$ has non-zero constant flag curvature. The purpose of this paper is to move further, exploring the holonomy properties of projectively flat Finsler manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature. We prove in particular that projectively flat Randers and Bryant-Shen manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature have infinite dimensional holonomy group.

Conformal holonomy, symmetric spaces, and skew symmetric torsion

We consider the question: can the isotropy representation of an irreducible pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space be realized as a conformal holonomy group? Using recent results of Cap, Gover and Hammerl, we study the representations of SO(2,1), PSU(2,1) and PSp(2,1) as isotropy groups of irreducible symmetric spaces of signature (3,2), (4,4) and (6,8), respectively, describing the geometry induced by a conformal holonomy reduction to the corresponding subgroups. Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket on manifolds with special holonomy

In this article, we summarize our recent results on the study of manifolds with special holonomy via the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket. This bracket enables us to define the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomologies which are analogues of the $d^c$ and the Dolbeault cohomologies in Kähler geometry, and assigns an $L_\infty$-algebra to each associative submanifold. We provide several concrete computations of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomology.

Holonomy groups of Lorentzian manifolds

In this paper, a survey of the recent results about the classification of the connected holonomy groups of the Lorentzian manifolds is given. A simplification of the construction of the Lorentzian metrics with all possible connected holonomy groups is obtained. As the applications, the Einstein equation, Lorentzian manifolds with parallel and recurrent spinor fields, conformally flat Walker metrics and the classification of 2-symmetric Lorentzian manifolds are considered.

Highly symmetric 2-plane fields on 5-manifolds and 5-dimensional Heisenberg group holonomy

Klt varieties with trivial canonical class -- Holonomy, differential forms, and fundamental groups

We investigate the holonomy group of singular Kähler-Einstein metrics on klt varieties with numerically trivial canonical divisor. Finiteness of the number of connected components, a Bochner principle for holomorphic tensors, and a connection between irreducibility of holonomy representations and stability of the tangent sheaf are established. New $G_2$-conifolds in $M$-theory and their Field Theory Interpretation

A recent theorem of Foscolo-Haskins-Nordström which constructs complete $G_2$-holonomy orbifolds from circle bundles over Calabi-Yau cones can be utilised to construct and investigate a large class of generalisations of the $M$-theory flop transition. We see that in many cases a UV perturbative gauge theory appears to have an infrared dual described by a smooth $G_2$-holonomy background in $M$-theory. Various physical checks of this proposal are carried out affirmatively.

Recent theoretical advances in elasticity of membranes following Helfrich's spontaneous curvature model

Recent theoretical advances in elasticity of membranes following Helfrich's famous spontaneous curvature model are summarized in this review. The governing equations describing equilibrium configurations of lipid vesicles, lipid membranes with free edges, and chiral lipid membranes are presented. Several analytic solutions to these equations and their corresponding configurations are demonstrated.
