The classification of Riemannian manifolds by the holonomy group of their Levi-Civita connection picks out many interesting classes of structures, several of which are solutions to the Einstein equations. The classification has two parts. The first consists of isolated examples: the Riemannian symmetric spaces. The second consists of geometries that can occur in continuous families: these include the Calabi-Yau structures and Joyce manifolds of string theory. One may ask how one can weaken the definitions and still obtain similar classifications. We present two closely related suggestions. The classifications for these give isolated examples that are isotropy irreducible spaces, and known families that are the nearly Kähler manifolds in dimension 6 and Gray's weak holonomy G$_2$ structures in dimension 7.
The invariant metric affine connections on Berger spheres which are Einstein with skew torsion are determined in both Riemannian and Lorentzian signature. Expressions of such connections are explicitly given. In particular, every Berger sphere with Lorentzian signature admits invariant metric affine connections Einstein with skew-torsion up to $\mathbb{S}^3$. For Riemannian signature, the existence of such connections strongly depends on the dimension of the sphere and on the scale of the deformation used for the Berger metric. In particular, there are Riemaniann Berger spheres, not Einstein, …
This article introduces the problem of finding intrinsic torsion varieties associated to G-structures on a fixed parallelizable Riemannian manifold. As an illustration, the intrinsic torsion varieties of orthogonal almost product structures are analysed on the Iwasawa manifold.
We develop a notion of Einstein manifolds with skew torsion on compact, orientable Riemannian manifolds of dimension four. We prove an analogue of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality and study the case of equality. We use the link with self-duality to study the moduli space of 1-instantons on the 4-sphere for a family of metrics defined by Bonneau.
We study the volume of compact Riemannian manifolds which are Einstein with respect to a metric connection with (parallel) skew-torsion. We provide a result for the sign of the first variation of the volume in terms of the corresponding scalar curvature. This generalizes a result of M. Ville, related with the first variation of the volume on a compact Einstein manifold.
We study the intrinsic torsion of almost quaternion-Hermitian manifolds via the exterior algebra. In particular, we show how it is determined by particular three-forms formed from simple combinations of the exterior derivatives of the local Kaehler forms. This gives a practical method to compute the intrinsic torsion and is applied in a number of examples. In addition we find simple characterisations of HKT and QKT geometries entirely in the exterior algebra and compute how the intrinsic torsion changes under a twist construction.
In this paper, we studied the full Einstein-Hilbert actions with respect to non-symmetric metrics and the corresponding torsion. The first concrete result in this paper are the general formulae for pressure and density with respect to the Madsen's article (the equation (3.1), in [10]). Based on these results, we obtained the expression of energy-momentum tensor with respect to non-symmetric metrics. We started the generalization of the Bianchi type-I model of cosmology with respect to the corresponding non-symmetric metrics.
We analyse the relationship between the components of the intrinsic torsion of an SU(3) structure on a 6-manifold and a G_2 structure on a 7-manifold. Various examples illustrate the type of SU(3) structure that can arise as a reduction of a metric with holonomy G_2.
We discuss the construction of Sp(2)Sp(1)-structures whose fundamental form is closed. In particular, we find 10 new examples of 8-dimensional nilmanifolds that admit an invariant closed 4-form with stabiliser Sp(2)Sp(1). Our constructions entail the notion of SO(4)-structures on 7-manifolds. We present a thorough investigation of the intrinsic torsion of such structures, leading to the construction of explicit Lie group examples with invariant intrinsic torsion.
We show that a connection with skew-symmetric torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition exists on an almost contact metric manifold exactly when it is D-homothetic to a cosymplectic manifold. In dimension five, we get that the existence of a connection with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition is equivalent to the existence of a Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold and vice versa, any Sasaki-Einstein 5-manifold generates a two parametric family of connections with skew torsion satisfying the Einstein metricity condition. Formulas for the curvature and the Ricci tensors of t…
We investigate quaternionic contact (qc) manifolds from the point of view of intrinsic torsion. We argue that the natural structure group for this geometry is a non-compact Lie group K containing Sp(n)H^*, and show that any qc structure gives rise to a canonical K-structure with constant intrinsic torsion, except in seven dimensions, when this condition is equivalent to integrability in the sense of Duchemin. We prove that the choice of a reduction to Sp(n)H^* (or equivalently, a complement of the qc distribution) yields a unique K-connection satisfying natural conditions on torsion and curvat…
We go further on the study of harmonicity for almost contact metric structures already initiated by Vergara-Diaz and Wood. By using the intrinsic torsion, we characterise harmonic almost contact metric structures in several equivalent ways and show conditions relating harmonicity and classes of almost contact metric structures. Additionally, we study the harmonicity of such structures as a map into the quotient bundle of the oriented orthonormal frames by the action of the structural group U(n)x1. Finally, by using a Bochner type formula proved by Bor and Hernandez Lamoneda, we display some ex…
This paper is devoted to the first systematic investigation of manifolds that are Einstein for a connection with skew symmetric torsion. We derive the Einstein equation from a variational principle and prove that, for parallel torsion, any Einstein manifold with skew torsion has constant scalar curvature; and if it is complete of positive scalar curvature, it is necessarily compact and it has finite first fundamental group. The longest part of the paper is devoted to the systematic construction of large families of examples. We discuss when a Riemannian Einstein manifold can be Einstein with s…
In anlogy with the work of R. Bryant on the Ricci tensor of a G$_2$-structure, we study the intrinsic torsion of an SU$(2)$-structure on a 5-dimensional manifold deriving an explicit expression for the Ricci and the scalar curvature in terms of torsion forms and its derivative. As a consequence of this formula we prove that the $α$-Einstein condition forces some special SU(2)-structures to be Sasaki-Einstein.
We briefly review the notion of the intrinsic torsion of a $G$-structure and then go on to classify the intrinsic torsion of the $G$-structures associated with spacetimes: namely, galilean (or Newton-Cartan), carrollian, aristotelian and bargmannian. In the case of galilean structures, the intrinsic torsion classification agrees with the well-known classification into torsionless, twistless torsional and torsional Newton-Cartan geometries. In the case of carrollian structures, we find that intrinsic torsion allows us to classify Carroll manifolds into four classes, depending on the action of t…
The target space of a (4,0) supersymmetric two-dimensional sigma model with Wess-Zumino term has a connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion and holonomy contained in Sp(n).Sp(1), QKT-connection. We study the geometry of QKT-connections. We find conditions to the existence of a QKT-connection and prove that if it exists it is unique. Studying conformal transformations we obtain a lot of (compact) examples of QKT manifolds. We present a (local) description of 4-dimensional homogeneous QKT structures relying on the known result of naturally reductive homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. We con…
Manifolds endowed with torsion and nonmetricity are interesting both from the physical and the mathematical points of view. In this paper, we generalize some results presented in the literature. We study Einstein manifolds (i.e., manifolds whose symmetrized Ricci tensor is proportional to the metric) in d dimensions with nonvanishing torsion that has both a trace and a traceless part, and analyze invariance under extended conformal transformations of the corresponding field equations. Then, we compare our results to the case of Einstein manifolds with zero torsion and nonvanishing nonmetricity…
We study the geometry of a $G$-structure $P$ inside the oriented orthonormal frame bundle ${\rm SO}(M)$ over an oriented Riemannian manifold $M$. We assume that $G$ is connected and closed, so the quotient ${\rm SO}(n)/G$, where $n=\dim M$, is a normal homogeneous space and we equip ${\rm SO}(M)$ with the natural Riemannian structure induced from the structure on $M$ and the Killing form of ${\rm SO}(n)$. We show, in particular, that minimality of $P$ is equivalent to harmonicity of an induced section of the homogeneous bundle ${\rm SO}(M)\times_{{\rm SO}(n)}{\rm SO}(n)/G$, with a Riemannian m…
We introduce and study a notion of invariant intrinsic torsion geometry which appears, for instance, in connection with the Bryant-Salamon metric on the spinor bundle over S^3. This space is foliated by six-dimensional hypersurfaces, each of which carries a particular type of SO(3)-structure; the intrinsic torsion is invariant under SO(3). The last condition is sufficient to imply local homogeneity of such geometries, and this allows us to give a classification. We close the circle by showing that the Bryant-Salamon metric is the unique complete metric with holonomy G_2 that arises from SO(3)-…
We study 5-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that admit an almost contact metric structure. We classify these structures by their intrinsic torsion and review the literature in terms of this scheme. Moreover, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of metric connections with vectorial, totally skew-symmetric or traceless cyclic torsion that are compatible with the almost contact metric structure. Finally, we examine explicit examples of almost contact metric 5-manifolds from this perspective.
We systematically analyse the necessary and sufficient conditions for the preservation of supersymmetry for bosonic geometries of the form R^{1,9-d} \times M_d, in the common NS-NS sector of type II string theory and also type I/heterotic string theory. The results are phrased in terms of the intrinsic torsion of G-structures and provide a comprehensive classification of static supersymmetric backgrounds in these theories. Generalised calibrations naturally appear since the geometries always admit NS or type I/heterotic fivebranes wrapping calibrated cycles. Some new solutions are presented. I…
A partial solution of the quaternionic contact Yamabe problem on the quaternionic sphere is given. It is shown that the torsion of the Biquard connection vanishes exactly when the trace-free part of the horizontal Ricci tensor of the Biquard connection is zero and this occurs precisely on 3-Sasakian manifolods. All conformal deformations sending the standard flat torsion-free quaternionic contact structure on the quaternionic Heisenberg group to a quaternionic contact structure with vanishing torsion of the Biquard connection are explicitly described. A '3-Hamiltonian form' of infinitesimal co…
In this paper most of the classes of G2-structures with Einstein induced metric of negative, null or positive scalar curvature are realized. This is carried out by means of warped G2-structures with fiber an Einstein SU(3) manifold. The torsion forms of any warped G2-structure are explicitly described in terms of the torsion forms of the SU(3)-structure and the warping function, which allows to give characterizations of the principal classes of Einstein warped G2 manifolds. Similar results are obtained for Einstein warped Spin(7) manifolds with fiber a G2 manifold.
We introduce the notion of $\varepsilonη\,$-Einstein $\varepsilon\,$-contact metric three-manifold, which includes as particular cases $η\,$-Einstein Riemannian and Lorentzian (para) contact metric three-manifolds, but which in addition allows for the Reeb vector field to be null. We prove that the product of an $\varepsilonη\,$-Einstein Lorentzian $\varepsilon\,$-contact metric three-manifold with an $\varepsilonη\,$-Einstein Riemannian contact metric three-manifold carries a bi-parametric family of Ricci-flat Lorentzian metric-compatible connections with isotropic, totally skew-symmetric, cl…
Riemannian Manifolds may be $C^{1,1}$ and the geometry of these manifolds is investigated in \cite{Groah1}. Here, a similar analysis is given for pseudohermitian, torsion-free manifolds whereby, instead of assuming that the metric is parallel, it is assumed that the metric is pseudohermitian, a condition adopted by Einstein and elaborated upon in \cite{Hlavaty}. At the level of regularity assumed here, Einstein's formulation of the pseudohermitian condition is not tensorial and so a reformulation of this condition is given here. It is shown that a $C^{1,1}$ manifold is pseudohermitian and tors…
Following the approach of Bryant we study the intrinsic torsion of a SU(3)-manifold deriving a number of formulae for the Ricci and the scalar curvature in terms of torsion forms. As a consequence we prove that in some special cases the Einstein condition forces the vanishing of the intrinsic torsion.
We give a normal form for pseudo-Einstein contact forms and apply it to construct intrinsic CR normal coordinates parametrized by the structure group of CR geometry. The proof is based on the construction of parabolic normal coordinates by Jerison and Lee.
Connection, torsion and curvature are introduced for general (local) Leibniz algebroids. Generalized Bismut connection on $TM \oplus Λ^{p} T^{\ast}M$ is an example leading to a scalar curvature of the form $R + H^2$ for a closed $(p+2)$-form $H$.
