In this article, we give a theorem of reduction of the structure group of a principal bundle P with regular structure group G. Then, when G is in the classes of Lie groups defined by T.Robart [13], we define the closed holonomy group of a connection as the minimal closed Lie subgroup of G for which the previous theorem of reduction can be applied. We also prove an infinite dimensional version of the Ambrose-Singer theorem: the Lie algebra of the holonomy group is spanned by the curvature elements.
Our paper is devoted to the study of the holonomy groups of Finsler surfaces using the methods of infinite dimensional Lie theory. The notion of infinitesimal holonomy algebra will be introduced, by the smallest Lie algebra of vector fields on an indicatrix, containing the curvature vector fields and their horizontal covariant derivatives with respect to the Berwald connection. We obtain that the topological closure of the holonomy group contains the exponential image of any tangent Lie algebra of the holonomy group. A class of Randers surfaces is determined, for which the infinitesimal holono…
We show that the set of Finsler metrics on a manifold contains an open everywhere dense subset of Finsler metrics with infinite-dimensional holonomy groups.
Recently, we developed a method for the study of holonomy properties of non-Riemannian Finsler manifolds and obtained that the holonomy group can not be a compact Lie group, if the Finsler manifold of dimension $> 2$ has non-zero constant flag curvature. The purpose of this paper is to move further, exploring the holonomy properties of projectively flat Finsler manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature. We prove in particular that projectively flat Randers and Bryant-Shen manifolds of non-zero constant flag curvature have infinite dimensional holonomy group.
Our goal in this paper is to make an attempt to find the largest Lie algebra of vector fields on the indicatrix such that all its elements are tangent to the holonomy group of a Finsler manifold. First, we introduce the notion of the curvature algebra, generated by curvature vector fields, then we define the infinitesimal holonomy algebra by the smallest Lie algebra of vector fields on an indicatrix, containing the curvature vector fields and their horizontal covariant derivatives with respect to the Berwald connection. At the end we introduce the notion of the holonomy algebra of a Finsler ma…
In this paper we discuss some examples and general properties of holonomy groups of $\nabla^φ$ introduced by Wylie and the author, the connection corresponding to the $N=1$ Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature, and also Wylie's $\bar{\mathrm{sec}}_f$. In particular we classify all possible holonomy groups in dimension 2 and also provide two infinite families: $SL_n(\mathbb{R})$ and $SO^+(p,q)$.
A torsion-free G_2 structure admitting an infinitesimal isometry is shown to give rise to a 4-manifold equipped with a complex symplectic structure and a 1-parameter family of functions and 2-forms linked by second order equations. Reversing the process in various special cases leads to the construction of explicit metrics with holonomy equal to G_2.
In this paper we show that the topological closure of the holonomy group of a certain class of projectively flat Finsler 2-manifolds of constant curvature is maximal, that is isomorphic to the connected component of the diffeomorphism group of the circle. This class of 2-manifolds contains the standard Funk plane of constant negative curvature and the Bryant-Shen-spheres of constant positive curvature. The result provides the first examples describing completely infinite dimensional Finslerian holonomy structures.
In this paper we introduce the notion of tangent space TG of a (not necessary smooth) subgroup G of the diffeomorphism group Diff(M) of a compact manifold M. We prove that TG is a Lie subalgebra of the Lie algebra of smooth vector fields on M. The construction can be generalized to subgroups of any (finite or infinite dimensional) Lie groups. The tangent Lie algebra TG introduced this way is a generalization of the classical Lie algebra in the smooth cases. As a working example, we discuss in detail the tangent structure of the holonomy group and fibered holonomy group of Finsler manifolds.
The holonomy of the ambient metrics of Nurowski's conformal structures associated to generic real-analytic 2-plane fields on 5-manifolds is investigated. It is shown that the holonomy is always contained in the split real form G_2 of the exceptional Lie group, and is equal to G_2 for an open dense set of 2-plane fields given by explicit conditions. In particular, this gives an infinite-dimensional family of metrics of holonomy equal to split G_2. These results generalize work of Leistner-Nurowski. The inclusion of the holonomy in G_2 is established by proving an ambient extension theorem for p…
Cartan's list of 3-dimensional Weyl structures with reduced holonomy is revisited. We show that the only Einstein-Weyl structures on this list correspond to the structures generated by the solutions of the dKP equation.
In this paper we prove that the holonomy group of a simply connected locally projectively flat Finsler manifold of constant curvature is a finite dimensional Lie group if and only if it is flat or it is Riemannian.
We study holonomy algebras generated by an algebraic element of the Clifford algebra, or equivalently, the holonomy algebras of certain spin connections in flat space. We provide series of examples in arbitrary dimensions and establish general properties of the holonomy algebras under some mild conditions on the generating element. We show that the first non-standard situation to look at appears in dimension 8 and concerns self-dual 4-forms. In this case complete structure results are obtained.
The aim of this paper is to show that holonomy properties of Finsler manifolds can be very different from those of Riemannian manifolds. We prove that the holonomy group of a positive definite non-Riemannian Finsler manifold of non-zero constant curvature with dimension >2 cannot be a compact Lie group. Hence this holonomy group does not occur as the holonomy group of any Riemannian manifold. In addition, we provide an example of left invariant Finsler metric on the Heisenberg group, so that its holonomy group is not a (finite dimensional) Lie group. These results give a positive answer to the…
In the paper we introduce a boundary value problem for a G_{2} structure on a 7-manifold with boundary, with prescribed 3-form on the boundary. We make some general observations about this problem and then study in more detail reductions to 4 and 3 dimensions by imposing symmetry. The 3-dimensional reduction admits a dual variational formulation in terms of solutions of the real Monge-Ampere equation
We completely explore the system of ODE's which is equivalent to the existence of a parallel $Spin(7)$-structure on the cone over a 7-dimensional 3-Sasakian manifold. The one-dimensional family of solutions of this system is constructed. The solutions of this family correspond to metrics with holonomy SU(4) which generalize the Calabi metrics.
Fino and Kath determined all possible holonomy groups of seven-dimensional pseu\-do-Rie\-man\-nian manifolds contained in the exceptional, non-compact, simple Lie group $\mathrm{G}_2^*$ via the corresponding Lie algebras. They are distinguished by the dimension of their maximal semi-simple subrepresentation on the tangent space, the socle. An algebra is called of Type I, II or III if the socle has dimension 1, 2 or 3 respectively. This article proves that each possible holonomy group of Type III can indeed be realized by a metric of signature $(4,3)$. For this purpose, metrics are explicitly c…
Normal distribution manifolds play essential roles in the theory of information geometry, so do holonomy groups in classification of Riemannian manifolds. After some necessary preliminaries on information geometry and holonomy groups, it is presented that the corresponding Riemannian holonomy group of the $d$-dimensional normal distribution is $SO\left(\frac{d\left(d+3\right)}{2}\right)$, for all $d\in\mathbb{N}$. As a generalization on exponential family, a list of holonomy groups follows.
The exceptional holonomy groups are G2 in 7 dimensions, and Spin(7) in 8 dimensions. Riemannian manifolds with these holonomy groups are Ricci-flat. This is a survey paper on constructions for compact 7- and 8-manifolds with holonomy G2 and Spin(7). The simplest such constructions work by using techniques from complex geometry and Calabi-Yau analysis to resolve the singularities of a torus orbifold T^7/G or T^8/G, for G a finite group preserving a flat G2 or Spin(7)-structure on T^7 or T^8. There are also more complicated constructions which begin with a Calabi-Yau manifold or orbifold. All th…
We prove that given a pseudo-Riemannian conformal structure whose conformal holonomy representation fixes a totally lightlike subspace of arbitrary dimension, there is, wrt. a local metric in the conformal class defined off a singular set, a parallel, totally lightlike distribution on the tangent bundle which contains the image of the Ricci-tensor. This generalizes results obtained for invariant lightlike lines and planes and closes a gap in the understanding of the geometric meaning of reducibly acting conformal holonomy groups. We show how this result naturally applies to the classification …
In this paper, we investigate the holonomy structure of the most accessible and demonstrative 2-dimensional Finsler surfaces, the Randers surfaces. Randers metrics can be considered as the solutions of the Zermelo navigation problem. We give the classification of the holonomy groups of locally projectively flat Randers two-manifolds of constant curvature. In particular, we prove that the holonomy group of a simply connected non-Riemannian projectively flat Finsler two-manifold of constant non-zero flag curvature is maximal and isomorphic to the orientation preserving diffeomorphism group of th…
If the holonomy representation of an $(n+2)$--dimensional simply-connected Lorentzian manifold $(M,h)$ admits a degenerate invariant subspace its holonomy group is contained in the parabolic group $(\mathbb{R} \times SO(n))\ltimes \mathbb{R}^n$. The main ingredient of such a holonomy group is the SO(n)--projection $G:=pr_{SO(n)}(Hol_p(M,h))$ and one may ask whether it has to be a Riemannian holonomy group. In this paper we show that this is the case if $G\subset U(n/2)$ or if the irreducible acting components of $G$ are simple.
We introduce a notion of twisted pure spinor in order to characterize, in a unified way, all the special Riemannian holonomy groups just as a classical pure spinor characterizes the special Kähler holonomy. Motivated by certain curvature identities satisfied by manifolds admitting parallel twisted pure spinors, we also introduce the Clifford monopole equations as a natural geometric generalization of the Seiberg-Witten equations. We show that they restrict to the Seiberg-Witten equations in 4 dimensions, and that they admit non-trivial solutions on manifolds with special Riemannian holonomy.
The exceptional holonomy groups are G2 in 7 dimensions, and Spin(7) in 8 dimensions. Riemannian manifolds with these holonomy groups are Ricci-flat. This is a survey paper on exceptional holonomy, in two parts. Part I introduces the exceptional holonomy groups, and explains constructions for compact 7- and 8-manifolds with holonomy G2 and Spin(7). The simplest such constructions work by using techniques from complex geometry and Calabi-Yau analysis to resolve the singularities of a torus orbifold T^7/G or T^8/G, for G a finite group preserving a flat G2 or Spin(7)-structure on T^7 or T^8. Ther…
Our aim is to support the choice of two remarkable connections with torsion in a 3-Sasakian manifold, proving that, in contrast to the Levi-Civita connection, the holonomy group in the homogeneous cases reduces to a proper subgroup of the special orthogonal group, of dimension considerably smaller. We realize the computations of the holonomies in a unified way, by using as a main algebraic tool a nonassociative structure, that one of symplectic triple system.
The problem of classification of connected holonomy groups (equivalently of holonomy algebras) for pseudo-Riemannian manifolds is open. The classification of Riemannian holonomy algebras is a classical result. The classification of Lorentzian holonomy algebras was obtained recently. In the present paper weakly-irreducible not irreducible subalgebras of $\su(1,n+1)$ ($n\geq 0$) are classified. Weakly-irreducible not irreducible holonomy algebras of pseudo-Kählerian and special pseudo-Kählerian manifolds are classified. An example of metric for each possible holonomy algebra is given. This gives…
This article is concerned with the study of the holonomy group of flat solvmanifolds. It is known that the holonomy group of a flat solvmanifold is abelian; we give an elementary proof of this fact and moreover we prove that any finite abelian group is the holonomy group of a flat solvmanifold. Furthermore, we show that the minimal dimension of a flat solvmanifold with holonomy group $\mathbb{Z}_n$ coincides with the minimal dimension of a compact flat manifold with holonomy group $\mathbb{Z}_n$. Finally, we give the possible holonomy groups of flat solvmanifolds in dimensions 3, 4, 5 and 6; e…
A list of possible holonomy groups contained the exceptional, non-compact Lie group $\mathrm{G}_2^{*}$ was provided by Fino and Kath. The classification is due to the corresponding holonomy algebras and divided into Type I, II and III, depending on the dimension of the socle being 1,2 or 3, respectively. It was also shown by Fino and Kath that all algebras of Type I, and by the author that all of Type III are indeed be realizable as a holonomy algebras by metrics with signature (4,3). This article proves that this is also true for all Type II algebras. Thus, there exists a realization by a met…
The holonomy group of an (n+2)-dimensional simply-connected, indecomposable but non-irreducible Lorentzian manifold (M,h) is contained in the parabolic group $(\mathbb{R} \times SO(n))\ltimes \mathbb{R}^n$. The main ingredient of such a holonomy group is the SO(n)--projection $G:=pr_{SO(n)}(Hol_p(M,h))$ and one may ask whether it has to be a Riemannian holonomy group. In this paper we show that this is always the case, completing our results of the first part math.DG/0305139. We draw consequences for the existence of parallel spinors on Lorentzian manifolds.
Nurowski showed that any generic 2-plane field $D$ on a 5-manifold $M$ determines a natural conformal structure $c_D$ on $M$; these conformal structures are exactly those (on oriented $M$) whose normal conformal holonomy is contained in the (split, real) simple Lie group $G_2$. Graham and Willse showed that for real-analytic $D$ the same holds for the holonomy of the real-analytic Fefferman-Graham ambient metric of $c_D$, and that both holonomy groups are equal to $G_2$ for almost all $D$. We investigate here independently interesting plane fields for which the associated holonomy groups are a…
An SU(3)- or SU(1,2)-structure on a 6-dimensional manifold N^6 can be defined as a pair of a 2-form omega and a 3-form rho. We prove that any analytic SU(3)- or SU(1,2)-structure on N^6 with d omega^2 =0 can be extended to a parallel Spin(7)- or Spin_0(3,4)-structure Phi that is defined on the trivial disc bundle N^6\times B_epsilon(0) for a sufficiently small epsilon>0. Furthermore, we show by an example that Phi is not uniquely determined by (omega, rho) and discuss if our result can be generalized to non-trivial bundles.
We study the eta invariants of compact flat spin manifolds of dimension n with holonomy group cyclic of odd prime order p. We find explicit expressions for the twisted and relative eta invariants and show that the reduced eta invariant is always an integer, except in a single case, when p=n=3. We use the expressions obtained to show that any such manifold is trivial in the appropriate reduced equivariant spin bordism group.
The holonomy group $G$ of a pseudo-quaternionic-Kählerian manifold of signature $(4r,4s)$ with non-zero scalar curvature is contained in $\Sp(1)\cdot\Sp(r,s)$ and it contains $\Sp(1)$. It is proved that either $G$ is irreducible, or $s=r$ and $G$ preserves an isotropic subspace of dimension $4r$, in the last case, there are only two possibilities for the connected component of the identity of such $G$. This gives the classification of possible connected holonomy groups of pseudo-quaternionic-Kählerian manifolds of non-zero scalar curvature.
For a conformal manifold, we describe a new relation between the ambient obstruction tensor of Fefferman and Graham and the holonomy of the normal conformal Cartan connection. This relation allows us to prove several results on the vanishing and the rank of the obstruction tensor, for example for conformal structures admitting twistor spinors or normal conformal Killing forms. As our main tool we introduce the notion of a conformal holonomy distribution and show that its integrability is closely related to the exceptional conformal structures in dimensions five and six that were found by Nurow…
Previous work (Pradines, 1966, Aof and Brown, 1992) has given a setting for a holonomy Lie groupoid of a locally Lie groupoid. Here we develop analogous 2-dimensional notions starting from a locally Lie crossed module of groupoids. This involves replacing the Ehresmann notion of a local smooth coadmissible section of a groupoid by a local smooth coadmissible homotopy (or free derivation) for the crossed module case. The development also has to use corresponding notions for certain types of double groupoids. This leads to a holonomy Lie groupoid rather than double groupoid, but one which involv…
For $(M,[g])$ a conformal manifold of signature $(p,q)$ and dimension at least three, the conformal holonomy group $\mathrm{Hol}(M,[g]) \subset O(p+1,q+1)$ is an invariant induced by the canonical Cartan geometry of $(M,[g])$. We give a description of all possible connected conformal holonomy groups which act transitively on the Möbius sphere $S^{p,q}$, the homogeneous model space for conformal structures of signature $(p,q)$. The main part of this description is a list of all such groups which also act irreducibly on $\R^{p+1,q+1}$. For the rest, we show that they must be compact and act deco…
We present three large classes of examples of conformal structures for which the equations for the Fefferman-Graham ambient metric to be Ricci-flat are linear PDEs, which we solve explicitly. These explicit solutions enable us to discuss the holonomy of the corresponding ambient metrics. Our examples include conformal pp-waves and, more importantly, conformal structures that are defined by generic rank 2 and 3 distributions in respective dimensions 5 and 6. The corresponding explicit Fefferman-Graham ambient metrics provide a large class of metrics with holonomy equal to the exceptional non-co…
One way of producing explicit Riemannian 6-manifolds with holonomy SU(3) is by integrating a flow of SU(2)-structures on a 5-manifold, called the hypo evolution flow. In this paper we classify invariant hypo SU(2)-structures on nilpotent 5-dimensional Lie groups. We characterize the hypo evolution flow in terms of gauge transformations, and study the flow induced on the variety of frames on a Lie algebra taken up to automorphisms. We classify the orbits of this flow for all hypo nilpotent structures, obtaining several families of cohomogeneity one metrics with holonomy contained in SU(3). We p…
Given a generic 2-plane field on a 5-dimensional manifold we consider its (3,2)-signature conformal metric [g] as defined in math.DG/0406400. Every conformal class [g] obtained in this way has very special conformal holonomy: it must be contained in the split-real-form of the exceptional group G_2. In this note we show that for special 2-plane fields on 5-manifolds the conformal classes [g] have the Fefferman-Graham ambient metrics which, contrary to the general Fefferman-Graham metrics given as a formal power series, can be written in an explicit form. We propose to study the relations betwee…
In his 1910 "Five Variables" paper, Cartan solved the equivalence problem for the geometry of $(2, 3, 5)$ distributions and in doing so demonstrated an intimate link between this geometry and the exceptional simple Lie groups of type $\textrm{G}_2$. He claimed to produce a local classification of all such (complex) distributions which have infinitesimal symmetry algebra of dimension at least $6$ (and which satisfy a natural uniformity condition), but in 2013 Doubrov and Govorov showed that this classification misses a particular distribution $\bf E$. We produce a closed form for the Fefferman-…
We construct homogeneous flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with non-abelian fundamental group. In the compact case, all homogeneous flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are complete and have abelian linear holonomy group. To the contrary, we show that there do exist non-compact and non-complete examples, where the linear holonomy is non-abelian, starting in dimensions $\geq 8$, which is the lowest possible dimension. We also construct a complete flat pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous manifold of dimension 14 with non-abelian linear holonomy. Furthermore, we derive a criterion for the properness of the …
IAs is well known, when D6 branes wrap a special lagrangian cycle on a non compact CY 3-fold in such a way that the internal string frame metric is Kahler there exists a dual description, which is given in terms of a purely geometrical eleven dimensional background with an internal metric of $G_2$ holonomy. It is also known that when D6 branes wrap a coassociative cycle of a non compact $G_2$ manifold in presence of a self-dual two form strength the internal part of the string frame metric is conformal to the $G_2$ metric and there exists a dual description, which is expressed in terms of a pu…
In this paper we investigate the relationship between the existence of parallel semi-Riemannian metrics of a connection and the reducibility of the associated holonomy group. The question as to whether the holonomy group necessarily reduces in the presence of a specified number of independent parallel semi-Riemannian metrics is completely determined by the the signature of the metrics and the dimension, d, of the manifold, when d not equal to four. In particular, the existence of two independent, parallel semi-Riemannian metrics, one of which having signature (p,q) with p not equal to q, impli…
The connection between Yang--Mills gauge fields on $4$-dimensional orientable compact Riemannian manifolds and modified Lévy Laplacians is studied. A modified Lévy Laplacian is obtained from the Lévy Laplacian by the action of an infinite dimensional rotation. Under the assumption that the 4-manifold has a nontrivial restricted holonomy group of the bundle of self-dual 2-forms, the following is proved. There is a modified Lévy Laplacian such that a parallel transport in some vector bundle over the 4-manifold is a solution of the Laplace equation for this modified Lévy Laplacian if and only if …
The classifications of holonomy groups in Lorentzian and in Euclidean signature are quite different. A group of interest in Lorentzian signature in n dimensions is the maximal proper subgroup of the Lorentz group, SIM(n-2). Ricci-flat metrics with SIM(2) holonomy were constructed by Kerr and Goldberg, and a single four-dimensional example with a non-zero cosmological constant was exhibited by Ghanam and Thompson. Here we reduce the problem of finding the general $n$-dimensional Einstein metric of SIM(n-2) holonomy, with and without a cosmological constant, to solving a set linear generalised L…
In this paper we complete the classification of spin manifolds admitting parallel spinors, in terms of the Riemannian holonomy groups. More precisely, we show that on a given n-dimensional Riemannian manifold, spin structures with parallel spinors are in one to one correspondence with lifts to Spin_n of the Riemannian holonomy group, with fixed points on the spin representation space. In particular, we obtain the first examples of compact manifolds with two different spin structures carrying parallel spinors.
The exceptional holonomy groups are G2 in 7 dimensions, and Spin(7) in 8 dimensions. In a previous paper (Invent. math. 123 (1996), 507-552) the author constructed the first examples of compact 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7), by resolving orbifolds T^8/G, where T^8 is the 8-torus and G a finite group of automorphisms of T^8. This paper describes a different construction of compact 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7). We start with a Calabi-Yau 4-orbifold Y with isolated singularities, and an isometric, antiholomorphic involution σof Y fixing only the singular points. Let Z=Y/<σ>. Then Z is an…
We study the holonomy cocycle H of a holomorphic foliation \Fc by Riemann surfaces defined on a compact complex projective surface X satisfying the following two conditions: 1) its singularities E are all hyperbolic; 2) there is no holomorphic non-constant map \C\to X such that out of E the image of \C is locally contained in a leaf. Let T be a harmonic current tangent to \Fc which does not give mass to any invariant analytic curve. Using the leafwise Poincaré metric, we show that H is integrable with respect to T. Consequently, we infer the existence of the Lyapunov exponent function of T.
An affine manifold is a manifold with an affine structure, i.e. a torsion-free flat affine connection. We show that the universal cover of a closed affine 3-manifold $M$ with holonomy group of shrinkable dimension (or discompacité in French) less than or equal to two is diffeomorphic to $\bR^3$. Hence, $M$ is irreducible. This follows from two results: (i) a simply connected affine 3-manifold which is 2-convex is diffeomorphic to $\bR^3$, whose proof using the Morse theory takes most of this paper; and (ii) a closed affine manifold of holonomy of shrinkable dimension less or equal to $d$ is $d…

We show that a complete flat pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous manifold with non-abelian linear holonomy is of dimension at least 14. Due to an example constructed in a previous article by Oliver Baues and the author, this is a sharp bound. Also, we give a structure theory for the fundamental groups of complete flat pseudo-Riemannian manifolds in dimensions less than 7. Finally, we observe that every finitely generated torsion-free 2-step nilpotent group can be realized as the fundamental group of a complete flat pseudo-Riemannian manifold with abelian linear holonomy.
We classify the possible local holonomy groups of Weyl connections. The Berger-Simons theorem and the Merkulov-Schwachhöfer classification of holonomy groups of irreducible torsion-free connections leaves us with the remaining case, where the Weyl connection $D$ is reducible and non-closed. In this case, it was shown by F. Belgun and A. Moroianu that the Weyl structure is an adapted Weyl structure of a non-closed conformal product. Furthermore we prove that non-closed Einstein-Weyl product structures only exist in dimension $4$.
We prove that, for M theory or type II, generic Minkowski flux backgrounds preserving $\mathcal{N}$ supersymmetries in dimensions $D\geq4$ correspond precisely to integrable generalised $G_{\mathcal{N}}$ structures, where $G_{\mathcal{N}}$ is the generalised structure group defined by the Killing spinors. In other words, they are the analogues of special holonomy manifolds in $E_{d(d)} \times\mathbb{R}^+$ generalised geometry. In establishing this result, we introduce the Kosmann-Dorfman bracket, a generalisation of Kosmann's Lie derivative of spinors. This allows us to write down the internal…
