We construct the holonomy groupoid of any singular foliation. In the regular case this groupoid coincides with the usual holonomy groupoid of Winkelnkemper (1983); the same holds in the singular cases of Bigonnet and Pradines (1985) and Debord (2001), which from our point of view can be thought of as being "almost regular". In the general case, the holonomy groupoid can be quite an ill behaved geometric object. On the other hand it often has a nice longitudinal smooth structure. Nonetheless, we use this groupoid to generalize to the singular case Connes' construction of the C*-algebra of the foliation. We also outline the construction of a longitudinal pseudo-differential calculus; the analytic index of a longitudinally elliptic operator takes place in the K-theory of our C*-algebra.
In our construction, the key notion is that of a bi-submersion which plays the role of a local Lie groupoid defining the foliation. Our groupoid is the quotient of germs of these bi-submersions with respect to an appropriate equivalence relation.
We introduce a blow-up construction of a smooth manifold along the singular leaves of an arbitrary singular foliation in the sense of Stefan and Sussmann, as well as a blow-up construction of the holonomy groupoid defined by Androulidakis and Skandalis. Our construction gives a locally compact locally Hausdorff groupoid, which can be regarded as a desingularisation of the singular foliation. We show that it retains some smooth structure.
We give a new construction of the holonomy groupoid of a regular foliation in terms of a partial connection on a diffeological principal bundle of germs of transverse parametrisations. We extend these ideas to construct a novel holonomy groupoid for any foliated bundle, which we prove sits at the top of a hierarchy of diffeological jet holonomy groupoids associated to the foliated bundle.
In this paper we study the Lie groupoids which appear in foliation theory. A foliation groupoid is a Lie groupoid which integrates a foliation, or, equivalently, whose anchor map is injective. The first theorem shows that, for a Lie groupoid G, the following are equivalent: - G is a foliation groupoid, - G has discrete isotropy groups, - G is Morita equivalent to an etale groupoid. Moreover, we show that among the Lie groupoids integrating a given foliation, the holonomy and the monodromy groupoids are extreme examples. The second theorem shows that the cyclic homology of convolution algebras …
We outline the construction of the holonomy groupoid of a locally Lie groupoid and the monodromy groupoid of a Lie groupoid. These specialise to the well known holonomy and monodromy groupoids of a foliation, when the groupoid is just an equivalence relation.
In order to understand the linearization problem around a leaf of a singular foliation, we extend the familiar holonomy map from the case of regular foliations to the case of singular foliations. To this aim we introduce the notion of holonomy transformation. Unlike the regular case, holonomy transformations can not be attached to classes of paths in the foliation, but rather to elements of the holonomy groupoid of the singular foliation. This assignment is injective. Holonomy transformations allow us to link the linearization problem with the compactness of the isotropy group of the holonomy …
Our main aim is to associate a holonomy Lie groupoid to the connective structure of an abelian gerbe. The construction has analogies with a procedure for the holonomy Lie groupoid of a foliation, in using a locally Lie groupoid and a globalisation procedure. We show that path connections and 2-holonomy on line bundles may be formulated using the notion of a connection pair on a double category, due to Brown-Spencer, but now formulated in terms of double groupoids using the thin fundamental groupoids introduced by Caetano-Mackaay-Picken. To obtain a locally Lie groupoid to which globalisation a…
We look at Poisson geometry taking the viewpoint of singular foliations, understood as suitable submodules generated by Hamiltonian vector fields rather than partitions into (symplectic) leaves. The class of Poisson structures which behave best from this point of view, are those whose submodule generated by Hamiltonian vector fields arises from a smooth holonomy groupoid. We call them almost regular Poisson structures and determine them completely. They include regular Poisson and log symplectic manifolds, as well as several other Poisson structures whose symplectic foliation presents singular…
We study the lightlike foliations that appear on Lorentzian manifolds with weakly irreducible not irreducible holonomy algebra. We give global structure equations for the foliation that generalize the Gauss and Weingarten equations for one lightlike hypersurface. This gives us some global operators on the manifold. Using these operators, we decompose the curvature tensor of the manifold into several components. We give a criteria how to find the type of the holonomy algebras (there are 4 possible types) in terms of the global operators.
We define a notion of connection in a fibre bundle that is compatible with a singular foliation of the base. Fibre bundles equipped with such connections are in plentiful supply, arising naturally for any Lie groupoid-equivariant bundle, and simultaneously generalising regularly foliated bundles in the sense of Kamber-Tondeur and singular foliations. We define hierarchies of diffeological holonomy groupoids associated to such bundles, which arise from the parallel transport of jet/germinal conservation laws. We show that the groupoids associated in this manner to trivial singularly foliated bu…
Previous work (Pradines, 1966, Aof and Brown, 1992) has given a setting for a holonomy Lie groupoid of a locally Lie groupoid. Here we develop analogous 2-dimensional notions starting from a locally Lie crossed module of groupoids. This involves replacing the Ehresmann notion of a local smooth coadmissible section of a groupoid by a local smooth coadmissible homotopy (or free derivation) for the crossed module case. The development also has to use corresponding notions for certain types of double groupoids. This leads to a holonomy Lie groupoid rather than double groupoid, but one which involv…
The notion of local equivalence relation on a topological space is generalised to that of local subgroupoid. The main result is the construction of the holonomy and monodromy groupoids of certain Lie local subgroupoids, and the formulation of a monodromy principle on the extendibility of local Lie morphisms.
This doctoral thesis has two objectives. The first objective is to introduce a notion of equivalence for singular foliations that preserves their transverse geometry and is compatible with the notions of Morita equivalence of the holonomy groupoids and the transverse equivalence for regular foliations that appeared in the 1980's. The second one is to describe the structures behind quotients of singular foliations and to connect these results with their associated holonomy groupoids. It also wants to give an introduction to the notion of singular foliations as given by Androulidakis and Skandal…
We prove a generalisation of Bott's vanishing theorem for the full transverse frame holonomy groupoid of any transversely orientable foliated manifold. As a consequence we obtain a characteristic map encoding both primary and secondary characteristic classes. Previous descriptions of this characteristic map are formulated for the Morita equivalent étale groupoid obtained via a choice of complete transversal. By working with the full holonomy groupoid we obtain novel geometric representatives of characteristic classes. In particular we give a geometric, non-étale analogue of the codimension 1 G…
We describe a local model for any Singular Riemannian Foliation in a neighbourhood of a closed saturated submanifold of a regular stratum. Moreover we construct a Lie groupoid which controls the transverse geometry of the linear approximation of the Singular Riemannian Foliation around these submanifolds. We also discuss the closure of this Lie groupoid and its Lie algebroid.
This thesis treats two main topics: calibrated symplectic foliations, and local Lie groupoids. Calibrated symplectic foliations are one possible generalization of taut foliations of 3-manifolds to higher dimensions. Their study has been popular in recent years, and we collect several interesting results. We then show how de Rham's theory of currents, and Sullivan's theory of structure currents, can be applied in trying to understand the calibratability of symplectic foliations. Our study of local Lie groupoids begins with their definition and an exploration of some of their basic properties. N…
Let $M$ be a spin manifold, the Dirac operator with coefficient in the universal flat Hilbert $C^\ast π_1(M)$-module determines a "Rosenberg index element" which, according to B.Hanke and T.Schick, subsumes the enlargeablility obstruction of positive scalar curvature on $M$. In this note, we generalize this result to the case of spin foliation. More precisely, given a foliation $(M,F)$ with $F$ spin, we shall define a foliation version of "Rosenberg index element" and prove that it is nonzero at the presence of compactly enlargeability of $(M,F)$.
In this paper we review some author's results about singular holonomy of singular riemannian foliations with sections (s.r.f.s for short) and also some results of a joint work with Toeben and a joint work with Gorodski. We stress here that the condition that the leaves are compact, used in some of these results, can be replaced by the condition that the leaves are closed embedded. We also briefly recall some of Toeben's results about blow-up of s.r.f.s. Then we use this technique to get conditions under which a holonomy map can be extended to a global isometry.
We give a superconnection proof of Connes' index theorem for proper cocompact actions of etale groupoids. This includes Connes' general foliation index theorem for foliations with Hausdorff holonomy groupoid.
Given a singular foliation, we attach an "essential isotropy" group to each of its leaves, and show that its discreteness is the integrability obstruction of a natural Lie algebroid over the leaf. We show that a condition ensuring discreteness is the local surjectivity of a transversal exponential map associated with the maximal ideal of vector fields prescribed to be tangent to the foliation. The essential isotropy group is also shown to control the smoothness of the holonomy cover of the leaf (the associated fiber of the holonomy groupoid), as well as the {smoothness} of the associated isotr…
We show that if a smooth multiplicative subbundle $S\subseteq TG$ on a groupoid $G\rr P$ is involutive and satisfies completeness conditions, then its leaf space $G/S$ inherits a groupoid structure over the space of leaves of $TP\cap S$ in $P$. As an application, a special class of Dirac groupoids is shown to project by forward Dirac maps to Poisson groupoids.
This paper is concerned with pseudodifferential calculus on manifolds with fibred corners. Following work of Connes, Monthubert, Skandalis and Androulidakis, we associate to every manifold with fibred corners a longitudinally smooth groupoid which algebraic and differential structure is explicitely described. This groupoid has a natural geometric meaning as a holonomy groupoid of singular foliation, it is a singular leaf space in the sense of Androulidakis and Skandalis. We then show that the associated compactly supported pseudodifferential calculus coincides with Mazzeo and Melrose's phi-cal…
We introduce singular subalgebroids of an integrable Lie algebroid, extending the notion of Lie subalgebroid by dropping the constant rank requirement. We lay the bases of a Lie theory for singular subalgebroids: we construct the associated holonomy groupoids, adapting the procedure of Androulidakis-Skandalis for singular foliations, in a way that keeps track of the choice of Lie groupoid integrating the ambient Lie algebroid. The holonomy groupoids are topological groupoids, and are suitable for noncommutative geometry as they allow for the construction of the associated convolution algebras.…
We define the thin fundamental Gray 3-groupoid $S_3(M)$ of a smooth manifold $M$ and define (by using differential geometric data) 3-dimensional holonomies, to be smooth strict Gray 3-groupoid maps $S_3(M) \to C(H)$, where $H$ is a 2-crossed module of Lie groups and $C(H)$ is the Gray 3-groupoid naturally constructed from $H$. As an application, we define Wilson 3-sphere observables.
Every singular foliation has an associated topological groupoid, called holonomy groupoid (see arXiv:math/0612370). In this note we exhibit some functorial properties of this assignment: if a foliated manifold $(M,\mathcal{F}_M)$ is the quotient of a foliated manifold $(P,\mathcal{F}_P)$ along a surjective submersion with connected fibers, then the same is true for the corresponding holonomy groupoids. For quotients by a Lie group action, an analog statement holds under suitable assumptions, yielding a Lie 2-group action on the holonomy groupoid.
We give a new construction of the holonomy and fundamental groupoids of a singular foliation. In contrast with the existing construction of Androulidakis and Skandalis, our method proceeds by taking a quotient of an infinite dimensional space of paths. This strategy is a direct extension of the classical construction for regular foliations and mirrors the integration of Lie algebroids via paths (per Crainic and Fernandes). In this way, we obtain a characterization of the holonomy and fundamental groupoids of a singular foliation that more clearly reflects the homotopic character of these invar…
For transversely homogeneous foliations on compact manifolds whose global holonomy group has connected closure, it is shown that either all holonomy covers of the leaves have polynomial growth with degree bounded by a common constant, or all holonomy covers of the leaves have exponential growth. This is an extension of a recent answer given by Breuillard and Gelander to a question of Carrière. Examples of transversely projective foliations satisfying the above condition were constructed by Chihi and ben Ramdane.
We introduce the holonomy of a singular leaf $L$ of a singular foliation as a sequence of group morphisms from $π_n(L)$ to the $π_{n-1}$ of the universal Lie $\infty$-algebroid of the transverse foliation of $L$. We include these morphisms in a long exact sequence, thus relating them to the holonomy groupoid of Androulidakis and Skandalis and to a similar construction by Brahic and Zhu for Lie algebroids.
In this paper, we generalize the notion of Serre fibration to the Morita category of topological groupoids and derive the associated long exact sequence of homotopy groups. We use this results for calculation of homotopy groups of various groupoids, such as the foliation groupoid of a Riemannian foliation.
For any body-time manifold $\mathbb{R} \times \mathcal{B}$ there exists a groupoid, called material groupoid, encoding all the material properties of the evolution material. A smooth distribution, the material distribution, is constructed to deal with the case in which the material groupoid is not a Lie groupoid. This new tool provides a unified framework to deal with general non-uniform evolution materials.
We study the holonomy cocycle H of a holomorphic foliation \Fc by Riemann surfaces defined on a compact complex projective surface X satisfying the following two conditions: 1) its singularities E are all hyperbolic; 2) there is no holomorphic non-constant map \C\to X such that out of E the image of \C is locally contained in a leaf. Let T be a harmonic current tangent to \Fc which does not give mass to any invariant analytic curve. Using the leafwise Poincaré metric, we show that H is integrable with respect to T. Consequently, we infer the existence of the Lyapunov exponent function of T.
We express Witten's deformation of Morse functions using deformation to the normal cone and $C^*$-modules. This allows us to obtain asymptotics of the `large eigenvalues'. Our methods extend to Morse functions along a foliation. We construct the Witten deformation using any generic function on an arbitrary foliation on a compact manifold and establish the compactness of its resolvent. When the foliation has a holonomy invariant transverse measure we show that our result implies Morse inequalities obtained by Connes and Fack in a slightly more general situation.
In this work, we study Lie groupoids equipped with multiplicative foliations and the corresponding infinitesimal data. We determine the infinitesimal counterpart of a multiplicative foliation in terms of its core and sides together with a partial connection satisfying special properties, giving rise to the concept of IM-foliation on a Lie algebroid. The main result of this paper shows that if $G$ is a source simply connected Lie groupoid with Lie algebroid $A$, then there exists a one-to-one correspondence between multiplicative foliations on $G$ and IM-foliations on the Lie algebroid $A$.
The motivation for this paper stems \cite{CR} from the need to construct explicit isomorphisms of (possibly nontrivial) principal $G$-bundles on the space of loops or, more generally, of paths in some manifold $M$, over which I consider a fixed principal bundle $P$; the aforementioned bundles are then pull-backs of $P$ w.r.t. evaluation maps at different points. The explicit construction of these isomorphisms between pulled-back bundles relies on the notion of {\em parallel transport}. I introduce and discuss extensively at this point the notion of {\em generalized gauge transformation between…
We prove the following theorem for Holomorphic Foliations in compact complex kaehler manifolds: if there is a compact leaf with finite holonomy, then every leaf is compact with finite holonomy. As corollary we reobtain stability theorems for compact foliations in Kaehler manifolds of Edwards-Millett-Sullivan and Hollman.
We introduce horizontal holonomy groups, which are groups defined using parallel transport only along curves tangent to a given subbundle $D$ of the tangent bundle. We provide explicit means of computing these holonomy groups by deriving analogues of Ambrose-Singer's and Ozeki's theorems. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions in terms of the horizontal holonomy groups for existence of solutions of two problems on foliated manifolds: determining when a foliation can be either (a) totally geodesic or (b) endowed with a principal bundle structure. The subbundle $D$ plays the role of an…
In a previous paper ([1]), we associated a holonomy groupoid and a C*-algebra to any singular foliation (M,F). Using these, we construct the associated pseudodifferential calculus. This calculus gives meaning to a Laplace operator of any singular foliation F on a compact manifold M, and we show that it can be naturally understood as a positive, unbounded, self-adjoint operator on L2(M).
We consider principal bundles as generalized morphisms between topological groupoids. In the category of these generalized morphisms two topological groupoids are isomorphic if and only if they are Morita equivalent. We show that the fibers of a generalized morphism from H to G induce a singular foliation of the topological groupoid H, and we prove a Reeb-Thurston stability theorem for such foliations. Next, we use generalized morphisms to study some Morita invariants of topological groupoids, in particular the homotopy groups of a topological groupoid and the Connes convolution algebra of an …
Following Losik's approach to Gelfand's formal geometry, certain characteristic classes for codimension-one foliations coming from the Gelfand-Fuchs cohomology are considered. Sufficient conditions for non-triviality in terms of dynamical properties of generators of the holonomy groups are found. The non-triviality for the Reeb foliations is shown; this is in contrast with some classical theorems on the Godbillon-Vey class, e.g, the Mizutani-Morita-Tsuboi Theorem about triviality of the Godbillon-Vey class of foliations almost without holonomy is not true for the classes under consideration. I…
Androulidakis and Skandalis showed how to associate a holonomy groupoid, a smooth convolution algebra and a C*-algebra to any singular foliation. In this note, we consider the singular foliations of a one-dimensional manifold given by vector fields that vanish to order k at a point. We show that, whereas the C*-algebras of these foliations are divided into two isomorphism classes according to the parity of k, the smooth algebras are pairwise nonisomorphic. This is accomplished by analyzing certain natural ideals in the smooth algebras. Issues of factorization with respect to convolution arise …
A singular foliation on a complete riemannian manifold M is said to be riemannian if each geodesic that is perpendicular at one point to a leaf remains perpendicular to every leaf it meets. We prove that the regular leaves are equifocal, i.e., the end point map of a normal foliated vector field has constant rank. This implies that we can reconstruct the singular foliation by taking all parallel submanifolds of a regular leaf with trivial holonomy. In addition, the end point map of a normal foliated vector field on a leaf with trivial holonomy is a covering map. These results generalize previou…
A parallel lightlike vector field on a Lorentzian manifold $X$ naturally defines a foliation $\mathcal{F}$ of codimension one. If either all leaves of $\mathcal{F}$ are compact or $X$ itself is compact admitting a compact leaf and the (transverse) Ricci curvature is non-negative then a Bochner type argument implies that the first Betti number of $X$ is bounded by $1 \leq b_{1} \leq \dim X$ if $X$ is compact and $0 \leq b_{1} \leq \dim X -1$ otherwise. We show that these bounds are optimal and depending on the holonomy of $X$ we obtain further results. Finally, we classify the holonomy represen…
This paper is concerned with the holonomy of a class of spaces which includes Landsberg spaces of Finsler geometry. The methods used are those of Lie groupoids and algebroids as developed by Mackenzie. We prove a version of the Ambrose-Singer Theorem for such spaces. The paper ends with a discussion of how the results may be extended to Finsler spaces and homogeneous nonlinear connections in general.
In this paper we study singular riemannian foliations that have sections,i.e., totally geodesic complete immersed submanifolds that meet each leaf orthogonally and whose dimensions are the codimensions of the regular leaves. We prove here that the restriction of the foliation to a slice of a leaf is diffeomorphic to an isoparametric foliation on an open set of an euclidian space. This result gives us local information about the singular foliation and in particular about the singular stratification of the foliation. It also allows us to describe the plaques of the foliation as level sets of a t…
We introduce a notion of equivalence for singular foliations - understood as suitable families of vector fields - that preserves their transverse geometry. Associated to every singular foliation there is a holonomy groupoid, by the work of Androulidakis-Skandalis. We show that our notion of equivalence is compatible with this assignment, and as a consequence we obtain several invariants. Further, we show that it unifies some of the notions of transverse equivalence for regular foliations that appeared in the 1980's.
We observe that any regular Lie groupoid G over an manifold M fits into an extension $K \to G \to E$ of a foliation groupoid E by a bundle of connected Lie groups K. If $\FF$ is the foliation on M given by the orbits of E and T is a complete transversal to $\FF$, this extension restricts to T, as an extension $K_{T}\to G_{T}\to E_{T}$ of an étale groupoid $E_{T}$ by a bundle of connected groups $K_{T}$. We break up the classification into two parts. On the one hand, we classify the latter extensions of étale groupoids by (non-abelian) cohomology classes in a new Čech cohomology of étale groupo…
Given a foliation, there is a well-known notion of holonomy, which can be understood as an action that differentiates to the Bott connection on the normal bundle. We present an analogous notion for Lie subalgebroids, consisting of an effective action of the minimal integration of the Lie subalgebroid, and provide an explicit description in terms of conjugation by bisections. The construction is done in such a way that it easily extends to singular subalgebroids, which provide our main motivation.
In this paper we establish a one-to-one correspondence between $S^1$-gerbes with connections, on the one hand, and their holonomies, for simply connected manifolds, or their parallel transports, in the general case, on the other hand. This result is a higher-order analogue of the familiar equivalence between bundles with connections and their holonomies for connected manifolds. The holonomy of a gerbe with group $S^1$ on a simply connected manifold $M$ is a group morphism from the thin second homotopy group to $S^1$, satisfying a smoothness condition, where a homotopy between maps from $[0,1]^…
We extend the notion of connection in order to be able to study singular geometric structures, namely, we consider a notion of connection on a Lie algebroid which is a natural extension of the usual concept of connection. Using connections, we are able to define holonomy of the orbit foliation of a Lie algebroid and prove a stability theorem. We also introduce secondary or exotic characteristic classes that generalize the modular class of a Lie algebroid.
We define and study, under suitable assumptions, the fundamental class, the index class and the rho class of a spin Dirac operator on the regular part of a spin stratified pseudomanifold. More singular structures, such as singular foliations, are also treated. We employ groupoid techniques in a crucial way; however, an effort has been made in order to make this article accessible to readers with only a minimal knowledge of groupoids. Finally, whenever appropriate, a comparison between classical microlocal methods and groupoids methods has been provided.
