Let $α$ and $β$ be positive real numbers. Let $F(x) \in K[[x^Γ]]$ be a Hahn series. We prove that if $F(x)$ is both $α$-Mahler and $β$-Mahler then it must be a rational function, $F(x) \in K(x)$, assuming some non-degeneracy conditions on $α$ and $β$.
Let $q$ a prime power and ${\mathbb F}_q$ the finite field of $q$ elements. We study the analogues of Mahler's and Koksma's classifications of complex numbers for power series in ${\mathbb F}_q((T^{-1}))$. Among other results, we establish that both classifications coincide, thereby answering a question of Ooto.

Allouche and Shallit introduced the notion of a regular power series as a generalization of automatic sequences. Becker showed that all regular power series satisfy Mahler equations and conjectured equivalent conditions for the converse to be true. We prove a stronger form of Becker's conjecture for a subclass of Mahler power series.
In this paper we prove that the Mahler measures of the Laurent polynomials $(x+x^{-1})(y+y^{-1})(z+z^{-1})+k$, $(x+x^{-1})^2(y+y^{-1})^2(1+z)^3z^{-2}-k$, and $x^4+y^4+z^4+1+k^{1/4}xyz$, for various values of $k$, are of the form $r_1 L'(f,0)+r_2 L'(χ,-1)$, where $r_1,r_2\in \mathbb{Q}$, $f$ is a CM newform of weight 3, and $χ$ is a quadratic character. Since it has been proved that these Maher measures can also be expressed in terms of logarithms and $_5F_4$-hypergeometric series, we obtain several new hypergeometric evaluations and transformations from these results.
Let $θ$ and $ρ$ be real numbers with $0 \le θ, ρ< 1$ and $θ$ irrational. We show that the Hecke-Mahler series $$ F_{θ, ρ} (z_1, z_2) = \sum_{k_1 \ge 1} \, \sum_{k_2 = 1}^{\lfloor k_1 θ+ ρ\rfloor} \, z_1^{k_1} z_2^{k_2}, $$ where $\lfloor \cdot \rfloor$ denotes the integer part function, takes transcendental values at any algebraic point $(β, α)$ with $0 < |β|, |βα^θ| < 1$. This extends earlier results of Mahler (1929) and Loxton and van der Poorten (1977), who settled the case $ρ=0$. Furthermore, for positive integers $b$ and $a$, with $b \ge 2$ and $a$ congruent to $1$ modulo $b-1$, we give t…
We prove a variety of explicit formulas relating special values of generalized hypergeometric functions to lattice sums with four indices of summation. These results are related to Boyd's conjectured identities between Mahler measures and special values of $L$-series of elliptic curves.
We prove the conjectural relations between Mahler measures and $L$-values of elliptic curves of conductors 20 and 24. We also present new hypergeometric expressions for $L$-values of CM elliptic curves of conductors 27 and 36. Furthermore, we prove a new functional equation for the Mahler measure of the polynomial family $(1+X)(1+Y)(X+Y)-αXY$, $α\in\mathbb R$.
We prove a conjectured formula relating the Mahler measure of the Laurent polynomial $1+X+X^{-1}+Y+Y^{-1}$, to the $L$-series of a conductor 15 elliptic curve.
Let $f : [0,1)\rightarrow [0,1)$ be a $2$-interval piecewise affine increasing map which is injective but not surjective. Such a map $f$ has a rotation number and can be parametrized by three real numbers. We make fully explicit the dynamics of $f$ thanks to two specific functions $δ$ and $ϕ$ depending on these parameters whose definitions involve Hecke-Mahler series. As an application, we show that the rotation number of $f$ is rational, when the three parameters are algebraic numbers.
We show that for almost every polynomial P(x,y) with complex coefficients, the difference of the logarithmic Mahler measures of P(x,y) and P(x,x^n) can be expanded in a type of formal series similar to an asymptotic power series expansion in powers of 1/n. This generalizes a result of Boyd. We also show that such an expansion is unique and provide a formula for its coefficients. When P has algebraic coefficients, the coefficients in the expansion are linear combinations of polylogarithms of algebraic numbers, with algebraic coefficients.
The aim of this paper is to prove a Mahler measure formula of a four-variable Laurent polynomial whose zero locus defines a Calabi-Yau threefold. We show that its Mahler measure is a rational linear combination of a special L-value of the normalized newform in S_4(Gamma_0(8)) and a Riemann zeta value. This is equivalent to a new formula for a 6F5-hypergeometric series evaluated at 1.
In Cogdell et al., \it LMS Lecture Notes Series \bf 459, \rm 393--427 (2020), \rm the authors proved an analogue of Kronecker's limit formula associated to any divisor $\mathcal D$ which is smooth in codimension one on any smooth Kähler manifold $X$. In the present article, we apply the aforementioned Kronecker limit formula in the case when $X$ is complex projective space $\CC\PP^n$ for $n \geq 2$ and $\mathcal D$ is a hyperplane, meaning the divisor of a linear form $P_D({z})$ for ${z} = (\mathcal{Z}_{j}) \in \CC\PP^n$. Our main result is an explicit evaluation of the Mahler measure of $P_{D…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero and $k$ and $l$ be two multiplicatively independent positive integers. We prove the following result that was conjectured by Loxton and van der Poorten during the Eighties: a power series $F(z)\in K[[z]]$ satisfies both a $k$- and a $l$-Mahler type functional equation if and only if it is a rational function.
This is the second paper in a series of two in which a global algebraic number theory of the reals is formulated with the purpose of providing a unified setting for algebraic and transcendental number theory. In this paper, to any real number $θ$ we associate its polynomial diophantine approximation ring: a tri-filtered subring of a nonstandard model of the ring $\mathbb{Z}[X]$. We characterize the filtration structure of the polynomial diophantine approximation ring according to the Mahler class and the Mahler type of $θ$. The arithmetic of polynomial diophantine approximation groups is intro…
We show how the theory of linear forms in two logarithms allows one to get effective irrationality measures for $n$-th roots of rational numbers ${a \over b}$, when $a$ is very close to $b$. We give a $p$-adic analogue of this result under the assumption that $a$ is $p$-adically very close to $b$, that is, that a large power of $p$ divides $a-b$. As an application, we solve completely certain families of Thue-Mahler equations. Our results illustrate, admittedly in a very special situation, the strength of the known estimates for linear forms in logarithms.
It is a classical result of Mahler that for any rational number $α$ > 1 which is not an integer and any real 0 < c < 1, the set of positive integers n such that $α$ n < c n is necessarily finite. Here for any real x, x denotes the distance from its nearest integer. The problem of classifying all real algebraic numbers greater than one exhibiting the above phenomenon was suggested by Mahler. This was solved by a beautiful work of Corvaja and Zannier. On the other hand, for non-zero real numbers $λ$ and $α$ with $α$ > 1, Hardy about a century ago asked ''In what circumstances can it be true that…
In a recent paper the team of Cogdell, Jorgenson and Smajlović develop infinite series representations for the logarithmic Mahler measure of a complex linear form, with 4 or more variables. We establish the case of 3 variables, by bounding an integral with integrand involving the random walk probability density $a\displaystyle\int_0^\infty tJ_0(at) \displaystyle\prod_{m=0}^2 J_0(r_m t)dt$, where $J_0$ is the order zero Bessel function of the first kind, and $a$ and {$r_m$} are positive real numbers. To facilitate our proof we develop an alternative description of the integral's asymptotic beha…
Let $M(α)$ denote the Mahler measure of the algebraic number $α$. In a recent paper, Dubickas and Smyth constructed a metric version of the Mahler measure on the multiplicative group of algebraic numbers. Later, Fili and the author used similar techniques to study a non-Archimedean version. We show how to generalize the above constructions in order to associate, to each point in $(0,\infty]$, a metric version $M_x$ of the Mahler measure, each having a triangle inequality of a different strength. We are able to compute $M_x(α)$ for sufficiently small $x$, identifying, in the process, a function…
In this work, we are dealing with some properties relating the zeros of a polynomial and its Mahler measure. We provide estimates on the number of real zeros of a polynomial, lower bounds on the distance between the zeros of a polynomial and non-zeros located on the unit circle and a lower bound on the number of zeros of a polynomial in the disk $\{\vert x-1\vert<1\}$.
We study Laurent polynomials in any number of variables that are sums of at most $k$ monomials. We first show that the Mahler measure of such a polynomial is at least $h/2^{k-2}$, where $h$ is the height of the polynomial. Next, restricting to such polynomials having integer coefficients, we show that the set of logarithmic Mahler measures of the elements of this restricted set is a closed subset of the nonnegative real line, with $0$ being an isolated point of the set. In the final section, we discuss the extent to which such an integer polynomial of Mahler measure $1$ is determined by its $k…
We present a new method for algebraic independence results in the context of Mahler's method. In particular, our method uses the asymptotic behaviour of a Mahler function $f(z)$ as $z$ goes radially to a root of unity to deduce algebraic independence results about the values of $f(z)$ at algebraic numbers. We apply our method to the canonical example of a degree two Mahler function; that is, we apply it to $F(z)$, the power series solution to the functional equation $F(z)-(1+z+z^2)F(z^4)+z^4F(z^{16})=0$. Specifically, we prove that the functions $F(z)$, $F(z^4)$, $F'(z)$, and $F'(z^4)$ are alg…
If $α$ is a non-zero algebraic number, we let $m(α)$ denote the Mahler measure of the minimal polynomial of $α$ over $\mathbb Z$. A series of articles by Dubickas and Smyth, and later by the author, develop a modified version of the Mahler measure called the $t$-metric Mahler measure, denoted $m_t(α)$. For fixed $α\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$, the map $t\mapsto m_t(α)$ is continuous, and moreover, is infinitely differentiable at all but finitely many points, called {\it exceptional points} for $α$. It remains open to determine whether there is a sequence of elements $α_n\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$ such that …
This is the first part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. We prove two main results concerning systems that are regular singular at the origin. Our interest in Mahler's method comes from the possible applications of these results to old problems involving automata theory and which concern the expansion of both natural numbers and real numbers in integer bases. In particular, problems which involve finite automata and base change. Such applications are studied in Part II of this work.
We consider the roots of uniformly chosen complex and real reciprocal polynomials of degree $N$ whose Mahler measure is bounded by a constant. After a change of variables this reduces to a generalization of Ginibre's complex and real ensembles of random matrices where the weight function (on the eigenvalues of the matrices) is replaced by the exponentiated equilibrium potential of the interval $[-2,2]$ on the real axis in the complex plane. In the complex (real) case the random roots form a determinantal (Pfaffian) point process, and in both cases the empirical measure on roots converges weakl…
Using the theory of o-minimality we show that the $p$-adic method of Skolem-Mahler-Lech-Chabauty may be adapted to prove instances of the dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture for some real analytic dynamical systems. For example, we show that if $f_1,...,f_n$ is a finite sequence of real analytic functions $f_i:(-1,1) \to (-1,1)$ for which $f_i(0) = 0$ and $|f_i'(0)| \leq 1$ (possibly zero), $a = (a_1,...,a_n)$ is an $n$-tuple of real numbers close enough to the origin and $H(x_1,...,x_n)$ is a real analytic function of $n$ variables, then the set $\{m \in {\mathbb N} : H (f_1^{\circ m} (a_1),...…
We develop a theory of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence, which also includes the possibility of dealing with several systems associated with sufficiently independent matrix transformations. Our main results go far beyond the existing literature, also surpassing those of two unpublished preprints the authors made available on the arXiv in 2018. The main new feature is that they apply now without any restriction on the matrices defining the corresponding Mahler systems. As a consequence, we settle several problems concern…
As an analogue of Mahler's classification for real numbers, Bundschuh introduced a classification for Laurent series over a finite field, divided into $A,S,T,U$-numbers.It is known that each of $A,S,U$-numbers is nonempty. On the other hand, the existence of $T$-numbers is open.In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to the problem.
The Mahler measure of a polynomial is a measure of complexity formed by taking the modulus of the leading coefficient times the modulus of the product of its roots outside the unit circle. The roots of a real degree $N$ polynomial chosen uniformly from the set of polynomials of Mahler measure at most 1 yields a Pfaffian point process on the complex plane. When $N$ is large, with probability tending to 1, the roots tend to the unit circle, and we investigate the asymptotics of the scaled kernel in a neighborhood of a point on the unit circle. When this point is away from the real axis (on which…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $f(t_1,...,t_d)$ be a power series in $d$ variables with coefficients in $K$ that is algebraic over the field of multivariate rational functions $K(t_1,...,t_d)$. We prove a generalization of both Derksen's recent analogue of the Skolem-Mahler-Lech theorem in positive characteristic and a classical theorem of Christol, by showing that the set of indices $(n_1,...,n_d)\in \mathbb{N}^d$ for which the coefficient of $t_1^{n_1}...t_d^{n_d}$ in $f(t_1,...,t_d)$ is zero is a $p$-automatic set. Applying this result to multivariate rational functions …
We show that Mahler's classification of real numbers $ζ$ with respect to the growth of the sequence $(w_{n}(ζ))_{n\geq 1}$ is equivalently induced by certain natural assumptions on the decay of the sequence $(λ_{n}(ζ))_{n\geq 1}$ concerning simultaneous rational approximation. Thereby we obtain a much clearer picture on simultaneous approximation to successive powers of a real number in general. Another variant of the Mahler classification concerning uniform approximation by algebraic numbers is shown as well. Our method has several applications to classic exponents of Diophantine approximatio…
Let $F_1=1,F_2=1,\ldots$ be the Fibonacci sequence. Motivated by the identity $\displaystyle\sum_{k=0}^{\infty}\frac{1}{F_{2^k}}=\frac{7-\sqrt{5}}{2}$, Erdös and Graham asked whether $\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{F_{n_k}}$ is irrational for any sequence of positive integers $n_1,n_2,\ldots$ with $\frac{n_{k+1}}{n_k}\geq c>1$. We resolve the transcendence counterpart of their question: as a special case of our main theorem, we have that $\displaystyle\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{F_{n_k}}$ is transcendental when $\frac{n_{k+1}}{n_k}\geq c>2$. The bound $c>2$ is best possible thanks to…
Let $0<λ<1$. We consider the one-parameter family of circle $λ$-affine contractions $f_δ:x \in [0,1) \mapsto λx + δ\; {\rm mod}\,1 $, where $0 \le δ<1$. Let $ρ$ be the rotation number of the map $f_δ$. We will give some numerical relations between the values of $λ,δ$ and $ρ$, essentially using Hecke-Mahler series and a tree structure. When both parameters $λ$ and $δ$ are algebraic numbers, we show that $ρ$ is a rational number. Moreover, in the case $λ$ and $δ$ are rational, we give an explicit upper bound for the height of $ρ$ under an assumption on $λ$.
The Conjecture of Lehmer is proved to be true. The proof mainly relies upon: (i) the properties of the Parry Upper functions $f_{\houseα}(z)$ associated with the dynamical zeta functions $ζ_{\houseα}(z)$ of the Rényi--Parry arithmetical dynamical systems ($β$-shift), for $α$ a reciprocal algebraic integer of house $\houseα$ greater than 1, (ii) the discovery of lenticuli of poles of $ζ_{\houseα}(z)$ which uniformly equidistribute at the limit on a limit "lenticular" arc of the unit circle, when $\houseα$ tends to $1^+$, giving rise to a continuous lenticular minorant ${\rm M}_{r}(\houseα)$ of …
