We present the first example of a polynomial defining a singular K3-surface whose Mahler measure is expressed in terms of the Mahler measure of the faces of its Newton polyhedron and the L-series of the K3-surface.
We present another example of a 3-variable polynomial defining a K3-hypersurface and having a logarithmic Mahler measure expressed in terms of a Dirichlet L-series.
We express the logarithmic Mahler measure of two families of polynomials defining K3 hypersurfaces of generic Picard number 19 in terms of Eisenstein-Kronecker series. For some singular K3 surfaces (i.e of Picard number 20) we write this measure as Hecke L-series of weight 3 with "Gr\" ossencharacters".
The difference Galois theory of Mahler equations is an active research area. The present paper aims at developing the analytic aspects of this theory. We first attach a pair of connection matrices to any regular singular Mahler equation. We then show that these connection matrices can be used to produce a Zariski-dense subgroup of the difference Galois group of any regular singular Mahler equation.
Let $α$ and $β$ be positive real numbers. Let $F(x) \in K[[x^Γ]]$ be a Hahn series. We prove that if $F(x)$ is both $α$-Mahler and $β$-Mahler then it must be a rational function, $F(x) \in K(x)$, assuming some non-degeneracy conditions on $α$ and $β$.
Here we characterise in a complete and explicit way the relations of algebraic dependence over $\QQ$ of complex values of Hecke-Mahler series taken at algebraic points of the multiplicative group $\GG_m^2(\CC)$. Our result contains previous theorems by Loxton and van der Poorten, Mahler, and Masser.
We study the Mahler measure of the three-variable Laurent polynomial x + 1/x + y + 1/y + z + 1/z - k where k is a parameter. The zeros of this polynomial define (after desingularization) a family of K3-surfaces. In favorable cases, the K3-surface has Picard number 20, and the Mahler measure is related to its L-function. This was first studied by Marie-Jose Bertin. In this work, we prove several new formulas, extending the earlier work of Bertin.
Let $q$ a prime power and ${\mathbb F}_q$ the finite field of $q$ elements. We study the analogues of Mahler's and Koksma's classifications of complex numbers for power series in ${\mathbb F}_q((T^{-1}))$. Among other results, we establish that both classifications coincide, thereby answering a question of Ooto.
Allouche and Shallit introduced the notion of a regular power series as a generalization of automatic sequences. Becker showed that all regular power series satisfy Mahler equations and conjectured equivalent conditions for the converse to be true. We prove a stronger form of Becker's conjecture for a subclass of Mahler power series.
This paper points at an intriguing inverse function relation between Eisenstein series connected with ``Modular Mahler Measures'' and instanton numbers for ``Non-Critical Strings''. In a companion paper Mahler measures are related to dimer models.

This is the first part of a work devoted to the study of linear Mahler systems in several variables from the perspective of transcendence and algebraic independence. We prove two main results concerning systems that are regular singular at the origin. Our interest in Mahler's method comes from the possible applications of these results to old problems involving automata theory and which concern the expansion of both natural numbers and real numbers in integer bases. In particular, problems which involve finite automata and base change. Such applications are studied in Part II of this work.
We prove the conjectural relations between Mahler measures and $L$-values of elliptic curves of conductors 20 and 24. We also present new hypergeometric expressions for $L$-values of CM elliptic curves of conductors 27 and 36. Furthermore, we prove a new functional equation for the Mahler measure of the polynomial family $(1+X)(1+Y)(X+Y)-αXY$, $α\in\mathbb R$.
This note reveals a mysterious link between the partition function of certain dimer models on 2-dimensional tori and the $L$-function of their spectral curves. It also relates the partition function in certain families of dimer models to Eisenstein series.
Let $f : [0,1)\rightarrow [0,1)$ be a $2$-interval piecewise affine increasing map which is injective but not surjective. Such a map $f$ has a rotation number and can be parametrized by three real numbers. We make fully explicit the dynamics of $f$ thanks to two specific functions $δ$ and $ϕ$ depending on these parameters whose definitions involve Hecke-Mahler series. As an application, we show that the rotation number of $f$ is rational, when the three parameters are algebraic numbers.
In this paper we prove that the Mahler measures of the Laurent polynomials $(x+x^{-1})(y+y^{-1})(z+z^{-1})+k$, $(x+x^{-1})^2(y+y^{-1})^2(1+z)^3z^{-2}-k$, and $x^4+y^4+z^4+1+k^{1/4}xyz$, for various values of $k$, are of the form $r_1 L'(f,0)+r_2 L'(χ,-1)$, where $r_1,r_2\in \mathbb{Q}$, $f$ is a CM newform of weight 3, and $χ$ is a quadratic character. Since it has been proved that these Maher measures can also be expressed in terms of logarithms and $_5F_4$-hypergeometric series, we obtain several new hypergeometric evaluations and transformations from these results.
Let $θ$ and $ρ$ be real numbers with $0 \le θ, ρ< 1$ and $θ$ irrational. We show that the Hecke-Mahler series $$ F_{θ, ρ} (z_1, z_2) = \sum_{k_1 \ge 1} \, \sum_{k_2 = 1}^{\lfloor k_1 θ+ ρ\rfloor} \, z_1^{k_1} z_2^{k_2}, $$ where $\lfloor \cdot \rfloor$ denotes the integer part function, takes transcendental values at any algebraic point $(β, α)$ with $0 < |β|, |βα^θ| < 1$. This extends earlier results of Mahler (1929) and Loxton and van der Poorten (1977), who settled the case $ρ=0$. Furthermore, for positive integers $b$ and $a$, with $b \ge 2$ and $a$ congruent to $1$ modulo $b-1$, we give t…
Let X be a projective integral normal scheme over a number field F; let L be a ample line bundle on X together with a semi-positive adelic metric in the sense of Zhang. The main results of this article are 1) A formula which computes the height (relative to L) of a Cartier divisor D on X as generalized "Mahler measures", i.e. by integrating Green functions for D against measures attached to L. 2) a theorem of equidistribution of points of "small" height valid for functions with logarithmic singularities along a divisor D, provided the height of D is "minimal". In the context of algebraic dynam…
We prove a variety of explicit formulas relating special values of generalized hypergeometric functions to lattice sums with four indices of summation. These results are related to Boyd's conjectured identities between Mahler measures and special values of $L$-series of elliptic curves.
We prove a conjectured formula relating the Mahler measure of the Laurent polynomial $1+X+X^{-1}+Y+Y^{-1}$, to the $L$-series of a conductor 15 elliptic curve.
We prove several identities relating three-variable Mahler measures to integrals of inverse trigonometric functions. After deriving closed forms for most of these integrals, we obtain ten explicit formulas for three-variable Mahler measures. Several of these results generalize formulas due to Condon and Lalín. As a corollary, we also obtain three $q$-series expansions for the dilogarithm.
The Mahler measures of some n-variable polynomial families are given in terms of special values of the Riemann zeta function and a Dirichlet L-series, generalizing the results of \cite{L}. The technique introduced in this work also motivates certain identities among Bernoulli numbers and symmetric functions.
The metric Mahler measure was first studied by Dubickas and Smyth in 2001 as a means of phrasing Lehmer's conjecture in topological language. More recent work of the author examined a parametrized family of generalized metric Mahler measures that gives rise to a series of new, and apparently difficult, problems. We establish a connection between these metric Mahler measures and the theory of continued fractions in a certain class of special cases. Our results enable us to calculate metric Mahler measures in several new examples.
We present a proof of the formula, due to Mellit and Brunault, which evaluates an integral of the regulator of two modular units to the value of the $L$-series of a modular form of weight 2 at $s=2$. Applications of the formula to computing Mahler measures are discussed.
We express the Mahler measures of $23$ families of Laurent polynomials in terms of Eisenstein-Kronecker series. These Laurent polynomials arise as Landau-Ginzburg potentials on Fano $3$-folds, $16$ of which define $K3$ hypersurfaces of generic Picard rank $19$, and the rest are of generic Picard rank $< 19$. We relate the Mahler measure at each rational singular moduli to the value at $3$ of the $L$-function of some weight-$3$ newform. Moreover, we find $10$ exotic relations among the Mahler measures of these families.
We show that for almost every polynomial P(x,y) with complex coefficients, the difference of the logarithmic Mahler measures of P(x,y) and P(x,x^n) can be expanded in a type of formal series similar to an asymptotic power series expansion in powers of 1/n. This generalizes a result of Boyd. We also show that such an expansion is unique and provide a formula for its coefficients. When P has algebraic coefficients, the coefficients in the expansion are linear combinations of polylogarithms of algebraic numbers, with algebraic coefficients.
The aim of this paper is to prove a Mahler measure formula of a four-variable Laurent polynomial whose zero locus defines a Calabi-Yau threefold. We show that its Mahler measure is a rational linear combination of a special L-value of the normalized newform in S_4(Gamma_0(8)) and a Riemann zeta value. This is equivalent to a new formula for a 6F5-hypergeometric series evaluated at 1.
In this work we apply the techniques that were developed in [Lalin: An algebraic integration for Mahler measure] in order to study several examples of multivariable polynomials whose Mahler measure is expressed in terms of special values of the Riemann zeta function or Dirichlet L-series. The examples may be understood in terms of evaluations of regulators. Moreover, we apply the same techniques to the computation of generalized Mahler measures, in the sense of Gon and Oyanagi [Gon, Oyanagi: Generalized Mahler measures and multiple sine functions]
In Cogdell et al., \it LMS Lecture Notes Series \bf 459, \rm 393--427 (2020), \rm the authors proved an analogue of Kronecker's limit formula associated to any divisor $\mathcal D$ which is smooth in codimension one on any smooth Kähler manifold $X$. In the present article, we apply the aforementioned Kronecker limit formula in the case when $X$ is complex projective space $\CC\PP^n$ for $n \geq 2$ and $\mathcal D$ is a hyperplane, meaning the divisor of a linear form $P_D({z})$ for ${z} = (\mathcal{Z}_{j}) \in \CC\PP^n$. Our main result is an explicit evaluation of the Mahler measure of $P_{D…
We study the Mahler measures of certain families of Laurent polynomials in two and three variables. Each of the known Mahler measure formulas for these families involves $L$-values of at most one newform and/or at most one quadratic character. In this paper, we show, either rigorously or numerically, that the Mahler measures of some polynomials are related to $L$-values of multiple newforms and quadratic characters simultaneously. The results suggest that the number of modular $L$-values appearing in the formulas significantly depends on the shape of the algebraic value of the parameter chosen…
For $p \in \mathbb{Q}_+ \smallsetminus \{ 1 \}$ a positive rational number different from one, we say that the Puisseux series $f \in \mathbb{C}((t))^\text{alg}$ is $p$-Mahler of non-exceptional polynomial type if there is a polynomial $P \in \mathbb{C}(t)^\text{alg}[X]$ of degree at least two which is not conjugate to either a monomial or to plus or minus a Chebyshev polynomial for which the equation $f(t^p) = P(f(t))$ holds. We show that if $p$ and $q$ are multiplicatively independent and $f$ and $g$ are $p$-Mahler and $q$-Mahler, respectively, of non-exceptional polynomial type, then $f$ an…
In a recent paper the team of Cogdell, Jorgenson and Smajlović develop infinite series representations for the logarithmic Mahler measure of a complex linear form, with 4 or more variables. We establish the case of 3 variables, by bounding an integral with integrand involving the random walk probability density $a\displaystyle\int_0^\infty tJ_0(at) \displaystyle\prod_{m=0}^2 J_0(r_m t)dt$, where $J_0$ is the order zero Bessel function of the first kind, and $a$ and {$r_m$} are positive real numbers. To facilitate our proof we develop an alternative description of the integral's asymptotic beha…
In 1994, Becker conjectured that if $F(z)$ is a $k$-regular power series, then there exists a $k$-regular rational function $R(z)$ such that $F(z)/R(z)$ satisfies a Mahler-type functional equation with polynomial coefficients where the initial coefficient satisfies $a_0(z)=1$. In this paper, we prove Becker's conjecture in the best-possible form; we show that the rational function $R(z)$ can be taken to be a polynomial $z^γQ(z)$ for some explicit non-negative integer $γ$ and such that $1/Q(z)$ is $k$-regular.
This is the second paper in a series of two in which a global algebraic number theory of the reals is formulated with the purpose of providing a unified setting for algebraic and transcendental number theory. In this paper, to any real number $θ$ we associate its polynomial diophantine approximation ring: a tri-filtered subring of a nonstandard model of the ring $\mathbb{Z}[X]$. We characterize the filtration structure of the polynomial diophantine approximation ring according to the Mahler class and the Mahler type of $θ$. The arithmetic of polynomial diophantine approximation groups is intro…
We present a new method for algebraic independence results in the context of Mahler's method. In particular, our method uses the asymptotic behaviour of a Mahler function $f(z)$ as $z$ goes radially to a root of unity to deduce algebraic independence results about the values of $f(z)$ at algebraic numbers. We apply our method to the canonical example of a degree two Mahler function; that is, we apply it to $F(z)$, the power series solution to the functional equation $F(z)-(1+z+z^2)F(z^4)+z^4F(z^{16})=0$. Specifically, we prove that the functions $F(z)$, $F(z^4)$, $F'(z)$, and $F'(z^4)$ are alg…
The Mahler measure was introduced by Mahler in the study of number theory. It is known that the Mahler measure appears in different areas of mathematics and physics. On the other hand, we have been investigated a new class of zeta functions for various kinds of walks including quantum walks by a series of our previous work on "Zeta Correspondence". The quantum walk is a quantum counterpart of the random walk. In this paper, we present a new relation between the Mahler measure and our zeta function for quantum walks. Firstly we consider this relation in the case of one-dimensional quantum walks…
While Roth's theorem states that the irrationality measure of all the irrational algebraic numbers is 2, and the same holds true over function fields in characteristic zero, some counter-examples were found over function fields in positive characteristic. This was put forward first by Mahler in 1949, in his fundamental paper on Diophantine approximation \cite{M}. It seems that, except for particular elements, as power series with bounded partial quotients, Roth's theorem holds. Until now, only one element, with unbounded partial quotients, discovered by Mills and Robbins \cite{MR} in 1986, has…
If $α$ is a non-zero algebraic number, we let $m(α)$ denote the Mahler measure of the minimal polynomial of $α$ over $\mathbb Z$. A series of articles by Dubickas and Smyth, and later by the author, develop a modified version of the Mahler measure called the $t$-metric Mahler measure, denoted $m_t(α)$. For fixed $α\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$, the map $t\mapsto m_t(α)$ is continuous, and moreover, is infinitely differentiable at all but finitely many points, called {\it exceptional points} for $α$. It remains open to determine whether there is a sequence of elements $α_n\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$ such that …
Sums of the singular series constants that appear in the Hardy--Littlewood $k$-tuples conjectures have long been studied in connection to the distribution of primes. We study constrained sums of singular series, where the sum is taken over sets whose elements are specified modulo $r$ or weighted by smooth functions. We show that the value of the sum is governed by incidences modulo $r$ of elements of the set in the case of arithmetic progressions and by pairings of the smooth functions in the case of weights. These sums shed light on sums of singular series in other formats.
We show that the error term in the asymptotic formula for the Ces{à}ro mean of the singular series in the Goldbach and the Hardy-Littlewood prime-pair conjectures cannot be too small and oscillates.
We compute the Fourier coefficients of analogues of Kohnen and Zagier's modular forms $f_{k,D}$ of weight $2$ and negative discriminant. These functions can also be written as twisted traces of certain weight $2$ Poincaré series with evaluations of Niebur-Poincaré series as Fourier coefficients. This allows us to study twisted traces of singular moduli in an integral weight setting. In particular, we recover explicit series expressions for twisted traces of singular moduli and extend algebraicity results by Bengoechea to the weight $2$ case. We also compute regularized inner products of these …
We show that the Riesz mean of the singular series in the Goldbach and the Hardy-Littlewood prime-pair conjectures has an asymptotic formula with an error term that can be expressed as an explicit formula that depends on the zeros of the Riemann zeta-function. Unconditionally this error term can be shown to oscillate, while conditionally it can be shown to oscillate between sharp bounds.
We discuss in some detail the general problem of computing averages of convergent Euler products, and apply this to examples arising from singular series for the $k$-tuple conjecture and more general problems of polynomial representation of primes. We show that the singular series for the $k$-tuple conjecture have a limiting distribution when taken over $k$-tuples with (distinct) entries of growing size, and observe that its moments have a curious symmetry property. We also give conditional arguments that would imply that the number of twin primes (or more general polynomial prime patterns) in…
Gross and Smith have put forward generalizations of Hardy - Littlewood twin prime conjectures for algebraic number fields. We estimate the behavior of sums of a singular series that arises in these conjectures, up to lower order terms. More exactly, we find asymptotic formulas for smoothed sums of the singular series minus one. Based upon Gross and Smith's conjectures, we use our result to suggest that for large enough 'short intervals' in an algebraic number field K, the variance of counts of prime elements in a random short interval deviates from a Cramer model prediction by a universal fact…
In the present work a new simple proof of the theorem of Gallagher about the average of the singular series in the Hardy-Littlewood prime k-tuple conjecture is proved (in an even stronger form) which is uniform with respect to k (if the length of the interval $H$ is sufficiently large as a function of $k$). This result of Gallagher played a key role in our original joint work with D. A. Goldston and C. Y. Yildirim, where we showed the existence of infinitely many small gaps between consecutive primes. In the present work some weaker variants of Gallagher`s result are also proved (in an even ea…
We prove that all mod $p^m$ singular forms of level $N$, degree $n+r$, and $p$-rank $r$ with $n\ge r$ are congruent mod $p^m$ to linear combinations of theta series of degree $r$ attached to quadratic forms of some level. Moreover, we prove that, the levels of theta series are of the form ``$p\mbox{-power}\times N$''. Additionally, in some cases of mod $p$ singular forms with smallest possible weight, we prove that the levels of theta series should be $p$.
We show that an elliptic modular form with integral Fourier coefficients in a number field $K$, for which all but finitely many coefficients are divisible by a prime ideal $\frak{p}$ of $K$, is a constant modulo $\frak{p}$. A similar property also holds for Siegel modular forms. Moreover, we define the notion of mod $\frak{p}$ singular modular forms and discuss some relations between their weights and the corresponding prime $p$. We discuss some examples of mod $\frak{p}$ singular modular forms arising from Eisenstein series and from theta series attached to lattices with automorphisms. Finall…
