We prove a rigidity result for group actions on the line whose elements have what we call "hyperbolic-like" dynamics. Using this, we give a spectral rigidity theorem for $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows on 3-manifolds, characterizing orbit equivalent flows in terms of the elements of the fundamental group represented by periodic orbits. As consequences of this, we give an efficient criterion to determine the isotopy classes of self orbit equivalences of $\mathbb{R}$-covered Anosov flows, and prove finiteness of contact Anosov flows on any given manifold.
In the appendix with Jonathan Bowden, we prove that orbit equivalences of contact Anosov flows correspond exactly to isomorphisms of the associated contact structures. This gives a powerful tool to translate results on Anosov flows to contact geometry and vice versa. We illustrate its use by giving two new results in contact geometry: the existence of manifolds with arbitrarily many distinct Anosov contact structures, answering a question of Foulon--Hasselblatt--Vaugon, and a virtual description of the group of contact transformations of a contact Anosov structure, generalizing a result of Giroux and Massot.
A foliation is R-covered if the leaf space in the universal cover is homeomorphic to the real numbers. We show that, up to topological conjugacy, there are at most two pseudo-Anosov flows transverse to such a foliation. If there are two, then the foliation is weakly conjugate to the the stable foliation of an R-covered Anosov flow. The proof uses the universal circle to R-covered foliations.
In this paper, we show that any topologically transitive Anosov flow on a closed three-dimensional manifold with the orientable weak stable and unstable foliations turns into an R-covered one by a Goodman-Fried surgery along periodic points. When a Birkhoff section of the Anosov flow is given, we can choose the periodic points from the boundary of the Birkhoff section.
In this article, we study the knots realized by periodic orbits of R-covered Anosov flows in compact 3-manifolds. We show that if two orbits are freely homotopic then in fact they are isotopic. We show that lifts of periodic orbits to the universal cover are unknotted. When the manifold is atoroidal, we deduce some finer properties regarding the existence of embedded cylinders connecting two given homotopic orbits.
We produce infinitely many examples of Anosov flows in closed 3-manifolds where the set of periodic orbits is partitioned into two infinite subsets. In one subset every closed orbit is freely homotopic to infinitely other closed orbits of the flow. In the other subset every closed orbit is freely homotopic to only one other closed orbit. The examples are obtained by Dehn surgery on geodesic flows. The manifolds are toroidal and have Seifert fibered pieces and atoroidal pieces in their torus decompositions.
Let $F',F$ be any two closed orientable surfaces of genus $g'>g\ge 1$, and $f:F\to F$ be any pseudo-Anosov map. Then we can "extend" $f$ to be a pseudo-Anosov map $f':F'\to F'$ so that there is a fiber preserving degree one map $M(F',f')\to M(F,f)$ between the hyperbolic surface bundles. Moreover the extension $f'$ can be chosen so that the surface bundles $M(F',f')$ and $M(F,f)$ have the same first Betti numbers.
We study the transverse geometric behavior of 2-dimensional foliations in 3-manifolds. We show that an R-covered transversely orientable foliation with Gromov hyperbolic leaves in a closed 3-manifold admits a regulating, transverse pseudo-Anosov flow (in the appropriate sense) in each atoroidal piece of the manifold. The flow is a blow of a one prong pseudo-Anosov flow. In addition we show that there is a regulating flow for the whole foliation. We also determine how deck transformations act on the universal circle of the foliation.

We propose a generalization of the concept of discretized Anosov flows that covers a wide class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in 3-manifolds, and that we call collapsed Anosov flows. They are related with Anosov flows via a self orbit equivalence of the flow. We show that all the examples constructed in a paper by Bonatti, Gogolev, Hammerlindl and the third author belong to this class, and that it is an open and closed class among partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We provide some equivalent definitions which may be more amenable to analysis and are useful in different situations.…
We show that a strong partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of $\mathbb{T}^3$ isotopic to Anosov has a unique quasi-attractor. Moreover, we study the entropy of the diffeomorphism restricted to this quasi-attractor.
The purpose of this article is to obtain dynamically coherence of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in certain classes of Anosov diffeomorphisms on nilmanifolds, extending a result due to T. Fisher, R. Potrie and M. Sambarino [FPS] on the torus.
We show that a self orbit equivalence of a transitive Anosov flow on a $3$-manifold which is homotopic to identity has to either preserve every orbit or the Anosov flow is $\mathbb{R}$-covered and the orbit equivalence has to be of a specific type. This result shows that one can remove a relatively unnatural assumption in a result of Farrell and Gogolev about the topological rigidity of bundles supporting a fiberwise Anosov flow when the fiber is $3$-dimensional.
We show that partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of $d$-dimensional tori isotopic to an Anosov diffeomorphism, where the isotopy is contained in the set of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms, are dynamically coherent. Moreover, we show a \textit{global stability result}, i.e. every partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism as above is \textit{leaf-conjugate} to the linear one. As a consequence, we obtain intrinsic ergodicity and measure equivalence for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional center direction that are isotopic to Anosov diffeomorphisms through such a path.
We prove that every sectional-Anosov flow of a compact 3-manifold $M$ exhibits a finite collection of hyperbolic attractors and singularities whose basins form a dense subset of $M$. Applications to the dynamics of sectional-Anosov flows on compact 3-manifolds include a characterization of essential hyperbolicity, sensitivity to the initial conditions (improving \cite{ams}) and a relationship between the topology of the ambient manifold and the denseness of the basin of the singularities.
A long-standing conjecture asserts that any Anosov diffeomorphism of a closed manifold is finitely covered by a diffeomorphism which is topologically conjugate to a hyperbolic automorphism of a nilpotent manifold. In this paper, we show that any closed 4-manifold that carries a Thurston geometry and is not finitely covered by a product of two aspherical surfaces does not support (transitive) Anosov diffeomorphisms.
In this article we obtain a simple topological and dynamical systems condition which is necessary and sufficient for an arbitrary pseudo-Anosov flow in a closed, hyperbolic three manifold to be quasigeodesic. Quasigeodesic means that orbits are efficient in measuring length up to a bounded multiplicative distortion when lifted to the universal cover. We prove that such flows are quasigeodesic if and only if there is an upper bound, depending only on the flow, to the number of orbits which are freely homotopic to an arbitrary closed orbit of the flow. The main ingredient is a proof that under t…
The purpose of this paper is to classify Anosov flows on the 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries on the figure-eight knot. This set of 3-manifolds is denoted by M(r) (r is a ratioanl number), which contains the first class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting Anosov flows in history, discovered by Goodman. Combining with the classification of Anosov flows on the sol-manifold M(0) due to Plante, we have: 1. if r is an integer, up to topological equivalence, M(r) exactly carries a unique Anosov flow, which is constructed by Goodman by doing a Dehn-Fried-Goodman surgery on a suspension Anosov f…
We study the behavior of hyperbolic affine automorphisms of a translation surface which is infinite in area and genus that is obtained as a limit of surfaces built from regular polygons studied by Veech. We find that hyperbolic affine automorphisms are not recurrent and yet their action restricted to cylinders satisfies a mixing-type formula with polynomial decay. Then we consider the extent to which the action of these hyperbolic affine automorphisms satisfy Thurston's definition of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. In particular we study the action of these automorphisms on simple closed curves…
We prove that every sectional Anosov flow (or, equivalently, every sectional-hyperbolic attracting set of a flow) on a compact manifold has a periodic orbit. This extends the previous three-dimensional result obtained in [Existence of periodic orbits for singular-hyperbolic sets].
We consider a hyperbolic surface bundle over the circle with the smallest known volume among hyperbolic manifolds having 3 cusps, so called "the magic manifold". We compute the entropy function on the fiber face of the unit ball with respect to the Thurston norm, determine homology classes whose representatives are genus 0 fiber surfaces, and describe their monodromies by braids. Among such homology classes whose representatives have n punctures, we decide which one realizes the minimal entropy. It turns out that all the braids with smallest known entropy are derived from monodromies for such …
To any Anosov flow X on a 3-manifold Fe1 associated a bi-foliated plane (a plane endowed with two transverse foliations Fs and Fu) which reflects the normal structure of the flow endowed with the center-stable and center unstable foliations. A flow is R-covered if Fs (or Fu) is trivial. From one Anosov flow one can build infinitely many others by Dehn-Goodman-Fried surgeries. This paper investigates how these surgeries modify the bi-foliated plane. We first noticed that surgeries along some specific periodic orbits do not modify the bi-foliated plane: for instance, - surgeries on families of o…
A sectional-Anosov flow on a manifold M is a C^1 vector field inwardly transverse to the boundary for which the maximal invariant is sectional-hyperbolic. We prove that every attractor of every vector field C^1 close to a transitive sectional-Anosov flow with singularities on a compact manifold has a singularity. This extends the three-dimensional result obtained in [Morales, C.A., The explosion of singular-hyperbolic attractors].
Two flows are topologically almost commensurable if, up to removing finitely many periodic orbits and taking finite coverings, they are topologically equivalent. We prove that all suspensions of automorphisms of the 2-dimensional torus and all geodesic flows on unit tangent bundles to hyperbolic 2-orbifolds are pairwise almost commensurable.
We consider a class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [BFP] which is open and closed and contains all known examples. If in addition the diffeomorphism is non-wandering, then we show it is accessible unless it contains a su-torus. This implies that these systems are ergodic when they preserve volume, confirming a conjecture by Hertz-Hertz-Ures for this class of systems.
We answer a question of Burns and Wilkinson, showing that there are open families of volume-preserving partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms which are accessible and center bunched and neither dynamically coherent nor Anosov. We also show in the volume-preserving setting that any diffeomorphism which is partially hyperbolic and Anosov may be isotoped to a diffeomorphism which is partially hyperbolic and not Anosov.
We obtain limit theorems (Stable Laws and Central Limit Theorems, both Gaussian and non-Gaussian) and thermodynamic properties for a class of non-uniformly hyperbolic flows: almost Anosov flows, constructed here. The proofs of the limit theorems for these flows are applications of corresponding theorems in an abstract functional analytic framework, which may be applicable to other classes of non-uniformly hyperbolic flows.
If a $C^{1 + a}$, $a >0$, volume-preserving diffeomorphism on a compact manifold has a hyperbolic invariant set with positive volume, then the map is Anosov. We also give a direct proof of ergodicity of volume-preserving $CC^{1+a}$, $a>0$, Anosov diffeomorphism without the usual Hopf argument.
In hyperbolic dynamics, a well-known result is that every hyperbolic attracting set, have a finite pseudo-orbit tracing property (FPOTP). It's natural to wonder if this result is maintained in the sectional-hyperbolic dynamics; Komuro in [Lorenz attractors do not have the pseudo-orbit tracing property], provides a negative answer for this question, by proving that the geometric Lorenz Attractor doesn't have a FPOTP. In this paper, we generalized the result of Komuro, we prove that every codimension one sectional-hyperbolic attractor set with a unique singularity Lorenz-like, which is of bounda…
We prove a structure theorem for pseudo-Anosov flows restricted to Seifert fibered pieces of three manifolds. The piece is called periodic if there is a Seifert fibration so that a regular fiber is freely homotopic, up to powers, to a closed orbit of the flow. A non periodic Seifert fibered piece is called free. In a previous paper [Ba-Fe1] we described the structure of a pseudo-Anosov flow restricted to a periodic piece up to isotopy along the flow. In the present paper we consider free Seifert pieces. We show that, in a carefully defined neighborhood of the free piece, the pseudo-Anosov flow…
Anosov families are non-stationary dynamical systems with hyperbolic behavior. Non-trivial examples of Anosov families will be given in this paper. We show the existence of invariant manifolds, the structrural stability and a characterization for a certain class of Anosov families.
Perturbations of time-one maps of transitive Anosov flows are studied. We show that most perturbations have no intermingled basins of hyperbolic physical measures.
The main result of this paper is a universal finiteness theorem for the set of all small dilatation pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, ranging over all surfaces. More precisely, we consider pseudo-Anosovs F:S to S with |chi(S)| log(lambda(F)) bounded above by some constant, and we prove that, after puncturing the surfaces at the singular points of the stable foliations, the resulting set of mapping tori is finite. Said differently, there is a finite set of fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds so that all small dilatation pseudo-Anosovs occur as the monodromy of a Dehn filling on one of the 3-manifolds in…
We study partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms satisfying a trapping property which makes them look as if they were Anosov at large scale. We show that, as expected, they share several properties with Anosov diffeomorphisms. We construct an expansive quotient of the dynamics and study some dynamical consequences related to this quotient.
We prove transitivity for volume preserving $C^{1+}$ diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^3$ which are isotopic to a linear Anosov automorphism along a path of weakly partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
The main result of this article is that if a $3$-manifold $M$ supports an Anosov flow, then the number of conjugacy classes in the fundamental group of $M$ grows exponentially fast with the length of the shortest orbit representative, hereby answering a question raised by Plante and Thurston in 1972. In fact we show that, when the flow is transitive, the exponential growth rate is exactly the topological entropy of the flow. We also show that taking only the shortest orbit representatives in each conjugacy classes still yields Bowen's version of the measure of maximal entropy. These results ar…
