Let $F',F$ be any two closed orientable surfaces of genus $g'>g\ge 1$, and $f:F\to F$ be any pseudo-Anosov map. Then we can "extend" $f$ to be a pseudo-Anosov map $f':F'\to F'$ so that there is a fiber preserving degree one map $M(F',f')\to M(F,f)$ between the hyperbolic surface bundles. Moreover the extension $f'$ can be chosen so that the surface bundles $M(F',f')$ and $M(F,f)$ have the same first Betti numbers.
We show that a self orbit equivalence of a transitive Anosov flow on a $3$-manifold which is homotopic to identity has to either preserve every orbit or the Anosov flow is $\mathbb{R}$-covered and the orbit equivalence has to be of a specific type. This result shows that one can remove a relatively unnatural assumption in a result of Farrell and Gogolev about the topological rigidity of bundles supporting a fiberwise Anosov flow when the fiber is $3$-dimensional.

We propose a generalization of the concept of discretized Anosov flows that covers a wide class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms in 3-manifolds, and that we call collapsed Anosov flows. They are related with Anosov flows via a self orbit equivalence of the flow. We show that all the examples constructed in a paper by Bonatti, Gogolev, Hammerlindl and the third author belong to this class, and that it is an open and closed class among partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. We provide some equivalent definitions which may be more amenable to analysis and are useful in different situations.…
In this article we obtain a simple topological and dynamical systems condition which is necessary and sufficient for an arbitrary pseudo-Anosov flow in a closed, hyperbolic three manifold to be quasigeodesic. Quasigeodesic means that orbits are efficient in measuring length up to a bounded multiplicative distortion when lifted to the universal cover. We prove that such flows are quasigeodesic if and only if there is an upper bound, depending only on the flow, to the number of orbits which are freely homotopic to an arbitrary closed orbit of the flow. The main ingredient is a proof that under t…
The invariant measured foliations of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism induce a natural (singular) Sol structure on mapping tori of surfaces with pseudo-Anosov monodromy. We show that when the pseudo-Anosov $ϕ:S\rightarrow S$ has orientable foliations and does not have 1 as an eigenvalue of the induced cohomology action on the closed surface, then the Sol structure can be deformed to nearby cone hyperbolic structures, in the sense of projective structures. The cone angles can be chosen to be decreasing from multiples of $2π$.
We study the behavior of hyperbolic affine automorphisms of a translation surface which is infinite in area and genus that is obtained as a limit of surfaces built from regular polygons studied by Veech. We find that hyperbolic affine automorphisms are not recurrent and yet their action restricted to cylinders satisfies a mixing-type formula with polynomial decay. Then we consider the extent to which the action of these hyperbolic affine automorphisms satisfy Thurston's definition of a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism. In particular we study the action of these automorphisms on simple closed curves…
Anosov representations $ρ$ of a hyperbolic group $Γ$ into a semisimple Lie group $G$ are known to admit cocompact domains of discontinuity in flag varieties $G/Q$, endowing the compact quotient manifolds $M_ρ$ with a $(G,G/Q)$-structure. In general the topology of $M_ρ$ can be quite complicated. In this article, we consider the case when $Γ$ is the fundamental group of a closed (real or complex) hyperbolic manifold $N$ and $ρ$ is a deformation of a (twisted) lattice embedding $Γ\to \mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb H_\mathbb K) \to G$ through Anosov representations. We prove that, in this situation, $M_ρ$…
In this paper we study the minimum dilatation pseudo-Anosov mapping classes coming from fibrations over the circle of a single 3-manifold, the mapping torus for the "simplest pseudo-Anosov braid". The dilatations that arise include the minimum dilatations for orientable mapping classes for genus g=2,3,4,5,8 as well as Lanneau and Thiffeault's conjectural minima for orientable mapping classes, when g = 2,4 (mod 6). Our examples also show that the minimum dilatation for orientable mapping classes is strictly greater than the minimum dilatation for non-orientable ones when g = 4,6,8.
We consider a hyperbolic surface bundle over the circle with the smallest known volume among hyperbolic manifolds having 3 cusps, so called "the magic manifold". We compute the entropy function on the fiber face of the unit ball with respect to the Thurston norm, determine homology classes whose representatives are genus 0 fiber surfaces, and describe their monodromies by braids. Among such homology classes whose representatives have n punctures, we decide which one realizes the minimal entropy. It turns out that all the braids with smallest known entropy are derived from monodromies for such …
There are two objects naturally associated with a braid $β\in B_n$ of pseudo-Anosov type: a (relative) pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism $φ_β\colon S^2\to S^2$; and the finite volume complete hyperbolic structure on the 3-manifold $M_β$ obtained by excising the braid closure of $β$, together with its braid axis, from $S^3$. We show the disconnect between these objects, by exhibiting a family of braids $\{β_q:q\in{\mathbb{Q}}\cap(0,1/3]\}$ with the properties that: on the one hand, there is a fixed homeomorphism $φ_0\colon S^2\to S^2$ to which the (suitably normalized) homeomorphisms $φ_{β_{q}}$ conv…
Two flows are topologically almost commensurable if, up to removing finitely many periodic orbits and taking finite coverings, they are topologically equivalent. We prove that all suspensions of automorphisms of the 2-dimensional torus and all geodesic flows on unit tangent bundles to hyperbolic 2-orbifolds are pairwise almost commensurable.
We consider a class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms introduced in [BFP] which is open and closed and contains all known examples. If in addition the diffeomorphism is non-wandering, then we show it is accessible unless it contains a su-torus. This implies that these systems are ergodic when they preserve volume, confirming a conjecture by Hertz-Hertz-Ures for this class of systems.
We establish a criterion for certain mapping classes of a surface homeomorphisms to be pseudo-Anosov in terms of the geometry of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and Gromov-hyperbolic surface group extensions. Specifically, any element of the fundamental group of a surface S gives rise to a mapping class on the punctured surface, and we show that such a class is pseudo-Anosov if its geodesic representative is "wide" in some hyperbolic 3-manifold homeomorphic to the trivial interval bundle over S.
We propose several common extensions of the classes of Anosov subgroups and geometrically finite Kleinian groups among discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. We relativize various dynamical and coarse geometric characterizations of Anosov subgroups given in our earlier work, extending the class from intrinsically hyperbolic to relatively hyperbolic subgroups. We prove implications and equivalences between the various relativizations.
The main result of this paper is a universal finiteness theorem for the set of all small dilatation pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms, ranging over all surfaces. More precisely, we consider pseudo-Anosovs F:S to S with |chi(S)| log(lambda(F)) bounded above by some constant, and we prove that, after puncturing the surfaces at the singular points of the stable foliations, the resulting set of mapping tori is finite. Said differently, there is a finite set of fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds so that all small dilatation pseudo-Anosovs occur as the monodromy of a Dehn filling on one of the 3-manifolds in…
We consider a billiard in the sphere S^2 with circular obstacles, and give a sufficient condition for its flow to be uniformly hyperbolic. We show that the billiard flow in this case is approximated by an Anosov geodesic flow on a surface in the ambiant space S^3. As an application, we show that every orientable surface of genus at least 11 admits an isometric embedding into S^3 (equipped with the standard metric) such that its geodesic flow is Anosov. Finally, we explain why this construction cannot provide examples of isometric embeddings of surfaces in the Euclidean R^3 with Anosov geodesic…
We show that a pseudo-Anosov map on a boundary component of an irreducible 3-manifold has a power that partially extends to the interior if and only if its (un)stable lamination is a projective limit of meridians. The proof is through 3-dimensional hyperbolic geometry, and involves an investigation of algebraic limits of convex cocompact compression bodies.
Let $Γ$ be a one-ended, torsion-free hyperbolic group and let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group with finite center. Using the canonical JSJ splitting due to Sela, we define amalgam Anosov representations of $Γ$ into $G$ and prove that they form a domain of discontinuity for the action of $\mathrm{Out}(Γ)$. In the appendix, we prove, using projective Anosov Schottky groups, that if the restriction of the representation to every Fuchsian or rigid vertex group of the JSJ splitting of $Γ$ is Anosov, with respect to a fixed pair of opposite parabolic subgroups, then $ρ$ is amalgam Anosov.
Given a pair of curves C_1 and C_2 on a hyperbolic surface F, when does there exist a pseudo-Anosov map sending one to another? More generally, one may ask the same question for C_i to be sets of disjoint simple closed curves. We will give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such maps.
A long-standing conjecture asserts that any Anosov diffeomorphism of a closed manifold is finitely covered by a diffeomorphism which is topologically conjugate to a hyperbolic automorphism of a nilpotent manifold. In this paper, we show that any closed 4-manifold that carries a Thurston geometry and is not finitely covered by a product of two aspherical surfaces does not support (transitive) Anosov diffeomorphisms.
Anosov representations of word hyperbolic groups into higher-rank semisimple Lie groups are representations with finite kernel and discrete image that have strong analogies with convex cocompact representations into rank-one Lie groups. However, the most naive analogy fails: generically, Anosov representations do not act properly and cocompactly on a convex set in the associated Riemannian symmetric space. We study representations into projective indefinite orthogonal groups PO(p,q) by considering their action on the associated pseudo-Riemannian hyperbolic space H^{p,q-1} in place of the Riema…
Let X be a hyperbolic surface and H the fundamental group of a hyperbolic 3-manifold that fibers over the circle with fiber X. Using the Birman exact sequence, H embeds in the mapping class group Mod(Y) of the surface Y obtained by removing a point from X. We prove that a subgroup G in H is convex cocompact in Mod(Y) if and only if G is finitely generated and purely pseudo-Anosov. We also prove a generalization of this theorem with H replaced by an arbitrary Gromov hyperbolic extension of the fundamental group of X, and an additional hypothesis of quasi-convexity of G in H. Along the way, we o…
We take a first step towards understanding the relationship between foliations and universally tight contact structures on hyperbolic 3-manifolds. If a surface bundle over a circle has pseudo-Anosov holonomy, we obtain a classification of "extremal" tight contact structures. Specifically, there is exactly one contact structure whose Euler class, when evaluated on the fiber, equals the Euler number of the fiber. This rigidity theorem is a consequence of properties of the action of pseudo-Anosov maps on the complex of curves of the fiber and a remarkable flexibility property of convex surfaces i…
This paper explores connections between Heegaard genus, minimal surfaces, and pseudo-Anosov monodromies. Fixing a pseudo-Anosov map phi and an integer n, let M_n be the 3-manifold fibered over S^1 with monodromy phi^n. JH Rubinstein showed that for a large enough n every minimal surface of genus at most h in M_n is homotopic into a fiber; as a consequence Rubinstein concludes that every Heegaard surface of genus at most h for M_n is standard, that is, obtained by tubing together two fibers. We prove this result and also discuss related results of Lackenby and Souto.
