To any Anosov flow X on a 3-manifold Fe1 associated a bi-foliated plane (a plane endowed with two transverse foliations Fs and Fu) which reflects the normal structure of the flow endowed with the center-stable and center unstable foliations. A flow is R-covered if Fs (or Fu) is trivial.
From one Anosov flow one can build infinitely many others by Dehn-Goodman-Fried surgeries. This paper investigates how these surgeries modify the bi-foliated plane.
We first noticed that surgeries along some specific periodic orbits do not modify the bi-foliated plane: for instance,
- surgeries on families of orbits corresponding to disjoint simple closed geodesics do not affect the bi-foliated plane associated to the geodesic flow of a hyperbolic surface (Theorem 1);
- Fe2 associates a (non-empty) finite family of periodic orbits, called pivots, to any non-R-covered Anosov flow. Surgeries on pivots do not affect the branching structure of the bi-foliated plane (Theorem 2)
We consider the set Surg(A) of Anosov flows obtained by Dehn-Goodman-Fried surgery from the suspension flows of Anosov automorphisms A in SL(2,Z) of the torus T2.
Every such surgery is associated to a finite set of couples (C,m(C)), where the C are periodic orbits and the m(C) integers. When all the m(C) have the same sign, Fenley proved that the induced Anosov flow is R-covered and twisted according to the sign of the surgery. We analyse here the case where the surgeries are positive on a finite set X and negative on another set Y.
Among other results, we show that given any flow X in Surg(A) :
- there exists e>0 such that for every e-dense periodic orbit C, every flow obtained from X by a non trivial surgery along C is R-covered (Theorem 4).
- there exist periodic orbits C+,C- such that every flow obtained from X by surgeries with distinct signs on C+ and C- is non-R-covered (Theorem 5).
We study the transverse geometric behavior of 2-dimensional foliations in 3-manifolds. We show that an R-covered transversely orientable foliation with Gromov hyperbolic leaves in a closed 3-manifold admits a regulating, transverse pseudo-Anosov flow (in the appropriate sense) in each atoroidal piece of the manifold. The flow is a blow of a one prong pseudo-Anosov flow. In addition we show that there is a regulating flow for the whole foliation. We also determine how deck transformations act on the universal circle of the foliation.
The purpose of this paper is to classify Anosov flows on the 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries on the figure-eight knot. This set of 3-manifolds is denoted by M(r) (r is a ratioanl number), which contains the first class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting Anosov flows in history, discovered by Goodman. Combining with the classification of Anosov flows on the sol-manifold M(0) due to Plante, we have: 1. if r is an integer, up to topological equivalence, M(r) exactly carries a unique Anosov flow, which is constructed by Goodman by doing a Dehn-Fried-Goodman surgery on a suspension Anosov f…
In this paper we focused our study on Derived From Anosov diffeomorphisms (DA diffeomorphisms ) of the torus $\mathbb{T}^3,$ it is, an absolute partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on $\mathbb{T}^3$ homotopic to an Anosov linear automorphism of the $\mathbb{T}^3.$ We can prove that if $f: \mathbb{T}^3 \rightarrow \mathbb{T}^3 $ is a volume preserving DA diffeomorphism homotopic to linear Anosov $A,$ such that the center Lyapunov exponent satisfies $λ^c_f(x) > λ^c_A > 0,$ with $x $ belongs to a positive volume set, then the center foliation of $f$ is non absolutely continuous. We construct a new…
In a non-compact setting, the notion of hyperbolicity, and the associated structure of stable and unstable manifolds (for unbounded orbits), is highly dependent on the choice of metric used to define it. We consider the simplest version of this, the analogue for the plane of Anosov diffeomorphisms, studied earlier by W. White and P. Mendes. The two known topological conjugacy classes of such diffeomorphisms are linear hyperbolic automorphisms and translations. We show that if the structure of stable and unstable manifolds is required to be preserved by these conjugacies, the number of distinct…
A foliation is R-covered if the leaf space in the universal cover is homeomorphic to the real numbers. We show that, up to topological conjugacy, there are at most two pseudo-Anosov flows transverse to such a foliation. If there are two, then the foliation is weakly conjugate to the the stable foliation of an R-covered Anosov flow. The proof uses the universal circle to R-covered foliations.
A diffeomorphism $f:\mathbb{R}^2\to\mathbb{R}^2$ in the plane is Anosov if it has a hyperbolic splitting at every point of the plane. The two known topological conjugacy classes of such diffeomorphisms are linear hyperbolic automorphisms and translations (the existence of Anosov structures for plane translations was originally shown by W. White). P. Mendes conjectured that these are the only topological conjugacy classes for Anosov diffeomorphisms in the plane. We prove that this claim holds when the Anosov diffeomorphism is the time-one map of a flow, via a theorem about foliations invariant …
We prove that if the stable foliation and the unstable foliation of an Anosov diffeomorphism on a connected compact manifold are $C^3$, then the diffeomorphism has fixed points. This is a partial positive answer to a Smale conjecture for fixed points of Anosov diffeomorphisms.
Let F be a foliation in a closed 3-manifold with negatively curved fundamental group and suppose that F is almost transverse to a quasigeodesic pseudo-Anosov flow. We show that the leaves of the foliation in the universal cover extend continuously to the sphere at infinity, hence the limit sets are continuous images of the circle. One important corollary is that if F is a Reebless finite depth foliation in a hyperbolic manifold, then it has the continuous extension property. Such finite depth foliations exist whenever the second Betti number is non zero. The result also applies to other classe…
We briefly survey some of the recent results concerning the metric behavior of the invariant foliations for a partially hyperbolic on a three-dimensional manifold and propose a conjecture to characterize atomic behavior for conservative partially hyperbolic homotopic to Anosov (DA) on $\mathbb T^3$. On the other hand we prove that if one of the invariant foliations (stable, center or unstable) of a conservative DA on $\mathbb T^3$ is $C^1$ and transversely absolutely continuous with bounded Jacobians the Lyapunov exponent on this direction is defined everywhere and constant. If the center foli…
We consider smooth partially hyperbolic volume preserving Z^k actions on smooth manifolds, with uniformly compact center foliation. We show that under certain irreducibility condition on the action, bunching and uniform quasiconformality conditions, the action is a smooth fiber bundle extension of an Anosov action, or the center foliation is pathological. We obtain several corollaries of this result. For example, we prove a global dichotomy result that any smooth conservative circle extension over a maximal Cartan action is either essentially a product of an action by rotations and a linear An…
We show that time-one maps of transitive Anosov flows of compact manifolds are accumulated by diffeomorphisms robustly satisfying the following dichotomy: either all of the measures of maximal entropy are non-hyperbolic, or there are exactly two ergodic measures of maximal entropy, one with a positive central exponent and the other with a negative central exponent. We establish this dichotomy for certain partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms isotopic to the identity whenever both of their strong foliations are minimal. Our proof builds on the approach developed by Margulis for Anosov flows wher…
In this work we completely classify $C^\infty$ conjugacy for conservative partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms homotopic to a linear Anosov automorphism on the 3-torus by its center foliation behavior. We prove that the uniform version of absolute continuity for the center foliation is the natural hypothesis to obtain $C^\infty$ conjugacy to its linear Anosov automorphism. On a recent work Avila, Viana and Wilkinson proved that for a perturbation in the volume preserving case of the time-one map of an Anosov flow absolute continuity of the center foliation implies smooth rigidity. The absolute…
We consider Anosov diffeomorphisms on $\mathbb{T}^3$ such that the tangent bundle splits into three subbundles $E^s_f \oplus E^{wu}_f \oplus E^{su}_f.$ We show that if $f$ is $C^r, r \geq 2,$ volume preserving, then $f$ is $C^1$ conjugated with its linear part $A$ if and only if the center foliation $\mathcal{F}^{wu}_f$ is absolutely continuous and the equality $λ^{wu}_f(x) = λ^{wu}_A,$ between center Lyapunov exponents of $f$ and $A,$ holds for $m$ a.e. $x \in \mathbb{T}^3.$ We also conclude rigidity of derived from Anosov diffeomorphism, assuming an strong absolute continuity property (Unifo…
Given any smooth Anosov map we construct a Banach space on which the associated transfer operator is quasi-compact. The peculiarity of such a space is that in the case of expanding maps it reduces exactly to the usual space of functions of bounded variation which has proven particularly successful in studying the statistical properties of piecewise expanding maps. Our approach is based on a new method of studying the absolute continuity of foliations which provides new information that could prove useful in treating hyperbolic systems with singularities.
We construct infinite sequences of pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms without fixed points and leaving invariant a sequence of orientable measured foliations on the same topological surface and the same stratum of the space of abelian differentials. The existence of such sequences show that all pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms fixing orientable measured foliations cannot be obtained by the Rauzy-Veech induction strategy.
In this article, we develop a geometric framework to study the notion of semi-minimality for the generic type of a smooth autonomous differential equation $(X,v)$, based on the study of rational factors of $(X,v)$ and of algebraic foliations on $X$, invariant under the Lie-derivative of the vector field $v$. We then illustrate the effectiveness of these methods by showing that certain autonomous algebraic differential equation of order three defined over the field of real numbers --- more precisely, those associated to mixing, compact, Anosov flows of dimension three --- are generically disint…
Weprovethattheasymptoticsofergodicintegralsalonganinvariant foliation of a toral Anosov diffeomorphism, or of a pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism on a compact orientable surface of higher genus, are determined (up to a logarithmic error) by the action of the diffeomorphism on the cohomology of the surface. As a consequence of our argument and of the results of Giulietti and Liverani [GL] on horospherical averages, toral Anosov diffeomorphisms have no Ruelle resonances in the open interval $(1,e^{h_{top}} )$.
We establish exponential decay of correlations of all orders for locally $G$-accessible isometric extensions of transitive Anosov flows, under the assumption that the strong stable and strong unstable foliations of the base Anosov flow are jointly $C^1$. This is accomplished by translating accessibility properties of the extension into local non-integrability estimates measured by Dolgopyat's infinitesimal transitivity group, from which we obtain contraction properties for a class of 'twisted' symbolic transfer operators.
In this paper, we describe a new approach to the problem of classification of transitive Anosov flows on 3-manifolds up to orbital equivalence. More specifically, generalizing the notion of Markov partition, we introduce the notion of Markovian family of rectangles in the bifoliated plane of an Anosov flow. We show that any transitive Anosov flow admits infinitely many Markovian families, each one of which can be canonically associated to a finite collection of combinatorial objects, called geometric types. We prove that any such geometric type describes completely the flow up to Dehn-Goodman-…
In this article, we give a quasi-final classification of quasiconformal Anosov flows. We deduce a very interesting differentable rigidity result for the orbit foliations of hyperbolic manifold of dimension at least three.
We prove a result allowing to build (transitive or non-transitive) Anosov flows on 3-manifolds by gluing together filtrating neighborhoods of hyperbolic sets. We give several applications; for example: 1. we build a 3-manifold supporting both of a transitive Anosov vector field and a non-transitive Anosov vector field; 2. for any n, we build a 3-manifold M supporting at least n pairwise different Anosov vector fields; 3. we build transitive attractors with prescribed entrance foliation; in particular, we construct some incoherent transitive attractors; 4. we build a transitive Anosov vector fi…
An infinite family of generalized pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms of the sphere S is constructed, and their invariant foliations and singular orbits are described explicitly by means of generalized train tracks. The complex strucure induced by the invariant foliations is described, and is shown to make S into a complex sphere. The generalized pseudo-Anosovs thus become quasiconformal automorphisms of the Riemann sphere, providing a complexification of the unimodal family which differs from that of the Fatou/Julia theory.
We consider a smooth Anosov diffeomorphism with a smooth dynamical foliation. We show upper bounds on the essential spectral radius of its transfer operator acting on anisotropic Sobolev spaces. (Such bounds are related to the essential decorrelation rate for the SRB measure.) We compare our results to the estimates of Kitaev on the domain of holomorphy of dynamical Fredholm determinants for differentiable dynamics.
In this article we study the topological structure of the lifts to the universal of the stable and unstable foliations of $3$-dimensional Anosov flows. In particular we consider the case when these foliations do not have Hausdorff leaf space. We completely determine the structure of the set of non separated leaves from a given leaf in one of these foliations. As a consequence of this suspensions are characterized, up to topological conjugacy, as the only $3$-dimensional Anosov flows without freely homotopic closed orbits. Furthermore the structure of branching is related to the topology of the…
This paper deals with random perturbations of diffeomorphisms on n-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with distributions supported on k-dimensional disks, where k<n. First we demonstrate general but not very intuitive conditions which guarantee that all invariant measures for rank k random perturbations of $C^2$ diffeomorphisms are absolutely continuous with respect to the Riemannian measure on M. For two subclasses of Anosov diffeomorphisms: hyperbolic toral automorphisms and Anosov diffeomorphisms with codimension 1 stable manifolds, the above conditions are modified in order to relate k-dimen…

In several contexts the defining invariant structures of a hyperbolic dynamical system are smooth only in systems of algebraic origin (smooth rigidity), and we prove new results of this type for a class of flows. For a compact Riemannian manifold and a uniformly quasiconformal transversely symplectic Anosov flow we define the longitudinal KAM-cocycle and use it to prove a rigidity result: The joint stable/unstable subbundle is Zygmund-regular, and higher regularity implies vanishing of the longitudinal KAM-cocycle, which in turn implies that the subbundle is Lipschitz-continuous and indeed tha…
Given a general pseudo-Anosov flow in a three manifold, the orbit space of the lifted flow to the universal cover is homeomorphic to an open disk. We compactify this orbit space with an ideal circle boundary. If there are no perfect fits between stable and unstable leaves and the flow is not topologically conjugate to a suspension Anosov flow, we then show: The ideal circle of the orbit space has a natural quotient space which is a sphere and is a dynamical systems ideal boundary for a compactification of the universal cover of the manifold. The main result is that the fundamental group acts o…
This paper investigates certain foliations of three-manifolds that are hybrids of fibrations over the circle with foliated circle bundles over surfaces: a 3-manifold slithers around the circle when its universal cover fibers over the circle so that deck transformations are bundle automorphisms. Examples include hyperbolic 3-manifolds of every possible homological type. We show that all such foliations admit transverse pseudo-Anosov flows, and that in the universal cover of the hyperbolic cases, the leaves limit to sphere-filling Peano curves. The skew R-covered Anosov foliations of Sergio Fenl…
Let $M$ be a closed oriented surface endowed with a Riemannian metric $g$. We consider the flow $ϕ$ determined by the motion of a particle under the influence of a magnetic field $Ω$ and a thermostat with external field ${\bf e}$. We show that if $ϕ$ is Anosov, then it has weak stable and unstable foliations of class $C^{1,1}$ if and only if the external field ${\bf e}$ has a global potential $U$, $g_{1}:=e^{-2U}g$ has constant curvature and $e^{-U}Ω$ is a constant multiple of the area form of $g_1$. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for just one of the weak foliations to be of …
In this paper, we show that any topologically transitive Anosov flow on a closed three-dimensional manifold with the orientable weak stable and unstable foliations turns into an R-covered one by a Goodman-Fried surgery along periodic points. When a Birkhoff section of the Anosov flow is given, we can choose the periodic points from the boundary of the Birkhoff section.
Let $Γ$ be a surface group of higher genus. Let $ρ\_0: Γ\to {PGL}(V)$ be a discrete faithful representation with image contained in the natural embedding of ${SL}(2, {\mathbb R})$ in ${PGL}(3, {\mathbb R})$ as a group preserving a point and a disjoint projective line in the projective plane. We prove that such a representation is $(G,Y)$-Anosov (following the terminology of \cite{labourieanosov}), where $Y$ is the frame bundle. More generally, we prove that all the deformations $ρ: Γ\to {PGL}(3, {\mathbb R})$ studied in \cite{barflag} are $(G,Y)$-Anosov. As a corollary, we obtain all the main …
